Add something about other online communites to the profile page.
It would be nice if the question Are there any other community weblogs where you regularly participate? could be added to the standard welcome questionnaire ("What's the deal with your nickname? When did you first start using the Internet?" etc.) [More inside.]
Generational issues
Old farts; hippies; soixante-huitards; baby boomers - there are a few of us on MetaFilter who are over 40, aren't there? To what extent is a lot of internal conflict here attributable to simple generational differences that are commonplace - though no less violent and, I should add, inevitable and ultimately unimportant - in our everyday lives?
Is it really true that older MetaFilterians are leaving in droves?
Reality Check Time: Is it really true that older MetaFilterians are leaving in droves? Apart from Evanizer [Is there anything we can to do get him back? Like compiling our favourite Evanizer moments?], my own perception is that they're not. At least one valued member (y6y6y6) has returned. Although it's increasingly repeated, here and elsewhere (and in danger of becoming a blotter-meme for every random drop of dissatisfaction leaked by users everywhere), how many older members have actually upped and gone since the recent influx of newbies, as the proto-meme pretends? And, if some have indeed left, does anyone know in which green pastures they now roam?
Just how international are we?
Just how international are we?
It seems to me all the other well-known and popular American and European community weblogs and websites are far more parochial and North America-centred than MetaFilter. Not so with us. This makes, I think, all the difference. We have (off the top of my head and as far as I know) members from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Holland, india, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, The Philippines, Portugal, Scotland, Wales, Spain...and who knows what other countries?
So just how widely cast is the MetaFilter users' web?[Lurkers: Please break your vow of silence, just this once, if you possibly can!] Me, I suspect it spans the whole beautiful Planet...

I don't want to post as my spouse
Hi! I'm MiguelCardoso's wife. My name is Maria João. I use the same computer as my husband does and have just registered under the name Schweppes Girl; using a well-known roundabout way. My username shows up fine on MetaFilter but, when I came to MetaTalk to comment, I find my username is automatically - and annoyingly - changed to MiguelCardoso.
Although I agree with what he says most of the time, I'd like, as do Catch/Holloway and the Acheson couple, to make comments of my own. Why is this? Or should I just order Miguel( ;) to take dictation?
I should add that I don't really mind; but I read MetaFilter and MetaTalk regularly and feel that women are severely under-represented. Does this mean I can be myself on MetaFilter(Schweppes Girl shows up as my login)but must bow to my husband on the perhaps more important MetaTalk? I guess it's just a bug. Am I right? Could it be fixed?

How come new admissions are frozen but the number of members keeps creeping up?
How come new admissions are frozen but the number of members(12322 when last I checked)keeps creeping up? Asylum seekers? Sleight of hand on the part of undesirable aliens? I think we should be told...
