March 2011 Archives (all archives)
Our 60th podcast starts off with some amazing calls from MeFites in Japan. It ends on a slightly heavy note and we didn't have the calls recorded before we recorded our podcast, so you'll have to excuse the mods for not commenting on the calls (because they were an unknown at the time) and generally being jokey just after some Heavy Shit. Anyhoo, this contains recaps from SXSW and the best parts of the site during the month of March. It runs 1hr 15min long or so [more inside]
Join Team MetaFilter for the April Game over at Health Month! Why should you join? A) It's fun. 2) You might actually improve your health. iii) Because mefites have accomplished some pretty great changes. (previously, previouslier) [more inside]
Collaborative music video. [more inside]
Wanted: 4 writers, a couple of editors and a designer/artist or two to finish up a collaborative zombie love story novel. Let's have some creative fun. [more inside]
You have reached you posting limit for this thread at 15% of all comments, why not have a donut instead?
Pony Request: A limit to the number of comments one user can make in a thread. [more inside]
"a few comments removed - Mayor Curley, if you are not trolling, please make it seem like you are not trolling, thanks." [more inside]
what happened to Rory Marinich? I don't want to open any wounds or cause any trouble but he was one of my favorite users. I can't see anything in his post history that indicates why he's not longer here. Just wondering what happened.
So is this a place where no one types 'first' comments, or do you guys just delete them with a vengeance before anyone sees them?
Anyone else found that subscribing to the Mefi Music RSS feed as an iTunes podcast stopped working a few days ago? [more inside]
Dear mods, I posted an askme question on the blue. So sorry! Please delete with prejudice
I would like to request that theological/religious threads (such as this this one) be allowed to be a discussion on a specific religious topic (in this case, hell and the afterlife) and not be turned into a referendum on the nature of belief. [more inside]
Just a reminder I'm sure we've had before, but I guess we need a refresher. Whether you like the show or not, have some consideration for others & don't give out spoilers like candy. I gave up on this thread after reading two comments containing the same spoiler.
The feature alerting us to new replies in AskMefi is awesome. Is it possible to have one that also alerts us to deletions? [more inside]
"Another single-link FPP? WTF." I am here to testify to you, my brothers and sisters, that the good lord smiles just as brightly on front page posts with a single link as he does on those with many! Hallelujah!" [more inside]
MeFites in Japan, we want to hear from you on the next podcast! After the devastating earthquake just a couple weeks ago, we've all worried about our members in Japan and it was great to see check-ins that things were mostly ok. We'd like to hear from mefites in Japan for the next podcast: call my new Skype Japanese number at (050) 5806-3941 and leave us up to a 90 second message letting everyone know what the quake was like, what the aftermath was like, and how the rebuilding it going. I know 90sec is short, so if you'd like to leave a longer story/message, you can always record a mp3 at home and just send us a link to download it on the contact form. Thanks! [more inside]
In-page youtube videos only will play the first one I watched. Refreshing or returning lets me play other videos, but after that, it still only lets me play the first one of that session. I'm using google chrome. (Previously)
I love AskMefi for all that it is, but I often get bogged down in things that don't interest me. I'm in Engineering by trade and often times I run into very specific areas of knowledge that either I know or someone else is an expert in. I'd like to make a list of these. [more inside]
The 'fantastic' flag: I know it's been called "outdated", and people have asked for it to be removed. Who cares about that! I would really like to know how many people use it, how it is used, and how the mods react to it being used. [more inside]
I love Metafilter and the site continues to get more awesome, especially with the addition of the feature that shows the number of recent new and as yet invisible comments. I love Metafilter even when mods occasionally reject my questions as inappropriate. Thanks to all the admins; you're doing a great job. That is all.
So did butterstick and cortex et al ever get around to giving us their Dark Horse Aliens comic book summaries, as promised in this thread and specifically here, here, here, here and here? [more inside]
I'm beginning to wonder if MetaFilter is becoming like local television news, in that it's painting a distorted picture of how bad things really are. [more inside]
Is something wrong with Metafilter's DNS, or is it my ISP? I'm able to access the subdomains of MeFi at the moment, but going to www.metafilter.com gives me a DNS error.
Anyone want to do a fantasy baseball team on yahoo.com? [more inside]
Do you like to get mail (that's not a bill)? Do you like postcards? Do you like weird/funny/interesting/unusual postcards from another country? [more inside]
This thread has just become awesome, not just because of the insight of the commenters, but the depth of its characters. See what I did there? Thanks, Mefi.
Postcard followup [more inside]
The Daily Beast has a great piece out on the saga of two Russian immigrants caught up in the sex trade and the work of a handful of brave MeFites who saved them. Cheers!
Can i use Metafilter Projects to post websites and projects by my siblings? I know they'd count as self-links on the Blue, but I was wondering if they'd be okay on projects.
Which Flash game was this? [more inside]
So the new show-new-comments feature is awesome! Except... when I load new comments and then hit the back button, it goes back to the post without the new comments, instead of back to (for example) the main page that I navigated from. [more inside]
Just featured on All Things Considered it's mefi's own: jedicus and valkyryn and their blog: The Law and the Multiverse. Previously discussed here and here. And this all started over here at mefi projects. [more inside]
Any MeFites here from Budapest? [more inside]
This "what's the matter with those people" question is especially hateful chatfilter. Since a mod has chosen to answer it, I assume it will not be deleted. Why not?
[comments removed - that's **IT** This thread is not a referendum of one crabby person's opinions about abortion. Go to MetaTalk, don't say "screw you" to people. Act like someone who wants to be here. Thank you Well, you said take it to MetaTalk. So I have. I don't think my opinions on abortion should be considered invalid, simply because I am male. I don't think I should get the ole delete hammer, because I am considered "crabby." I was accused of calling women sluts, which I certainly did not do. One person inferred it, a couple others jumped on the proverbial bandwagon, and I got saddled with something I didn't do. Yes, I said "Screw you." I think that IS acting like I want to be here, know how the joint works, and don't much feel like getting piled on for something I didn't do in the first place. I'm sure there a lot of reasons to not like me, but if you are going to pick one and broadcast it, at least make sure it is true.
None of the threads that I visit get remembered, so I constantly see X new posts, even if I've just gone to the thread and come back. [more inside]
This was mentioned in the comments section of a metatalk thread about Listening Room, but our very own Narwhal Bacon has released the source for a (far superior, imo) clone of it called Collaborative Jukebox. There is a room open right now for mefites at MixParty.org [more inside]
Just highlighting the community support provided in this AskMeFi question. It was mentioned on The Hathor Legacy yesterday. [more inside]
I accidentally disabled the Metafilter mobile stylesheet. How can I get it back?
Can anyone copy and email me the user manual for a Chef's Choice model 110 knife sharpner? PLEASE lost mine years ago.
Question about retention/administering MeFi Jobs postings. [more inside]
What is MeFi's policy on posting the text of WikiLeaks cables? Posts like these effectively ban anyone who works for a US government agency, defense contractor and who knows who else from even viewing the thread while at work. Couldn't people just post links instead and leave it up to the viewer to click on them? After all, it's generally accepted courtesy elsewhere on MeFi to label NSFW links as such before posting them.
Hey guys, remember this post? I'd love to update it, mostly because I've updated my desk! Anyone else want to post their desk pictures?
About the (fabulous) 'X new comments, show' function: I can't say enough good things about this, as it makes following long threads so easy compared to the old system of having to reload. But why not take it just a small step further - instead of making us click to load them, why not just have the script go ahead and load the new comments when they are detected? (Maybe a user preference?)
I like reddit, and I have an account it, but do single link reddit FPP belong on the blue? [more inside]
yourcelf's snazzy new GraphFi bookmarklet makes catching up with long threads a breeze. [more inside]

What are the guidelines for posting medical advice that could easily be administrated improperly? [more inside]
Feature request: would it be possible to add an option to display the time of posts in 24 hour notation instead of the default 12 hour? It's not hugely important but it would be so nice for us Unamericans.
Was People of Walmart ever posted here? Did the thread last? [more inside]
Japan nuclear disaster thread too long of tooth? Things rapidly deteriorating. Latest news. [more inside]
What is the etiquette for offering one's services as an answer to an AskMe seeking said services? [more inside]
I have a new computer, and I am reinstalling all my special bells and whistles. What's that handy little app that puts an arrow on the left-hand margin of MeFi posts, scrolling you down to wherever you last were in the thread? And how can I get it? [more inside]
David McCandless, who writes Information is Beautiful used an AskMeFi thread as part of his data for a cloud of books everyone should read. [more inside]
My FPP this morning supported legitimate outrage against a clearly terrible list of movies. This deletion is totally unwarranted and should be reversed.
Could we please add tumblr to the list of social app links that we can display on our profiles? tia
Atlantis post vanished from the Blue? I'm running the Deleted Posts script, and I can see other deleted posts, but this one seems to have just disappeared. [more inside]
As the aftermath of a tsunami leaves Japan shell-shocked, MetaFilter has opened a new thread for those who wish to exploit the tsunami to talk about the dangers of nuclear power. [more inside]
Where do I find the YouTube in-post code? [more inside]

What is the correct style/convention for hyperlinks and punctuation? [more inside]
So why do you participate here on MetaFilter? Is it because you "have a serious and unhealthy addiction to the internet, perhaps due to issues of procrastination and life avoidance, and ... metafilter is like a group of enablers in encouraging that kind of psychodynamic?" Or, perchance, do you visit frequently for some other reason(s)?
I posted this question on the green not too long ago about the best cat in the world. My little fellow didn't make it through his surgery but I feel confident those who responded helped make the right decision. Thank you for your support.
What is a "pull quote" in Mefispeak and why is it bad form? [more inside]
Is there anyway we can add Rotten Tomatoes to the list of social apps on our profiles?
How Do MeFites Do It?, or Maybe I'm Not Spending Enough Time on the Computer Perhaps? I'm here to inquire about the phenomenon of responding to FPPs. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get around to reading or viewing all of the linked articles/sites/videos on a post. By that time, it's too late to participate in the exchange of responses or even be meaningful saying anything at all on the blue so long after the fact. [more inside]
Pony Request: the ability to send MeMail to more than one person simultaneously. [more inside]
can't post anything. paid my tab, but..............
Pony Request: Can we have a category for real estate and housing questions? [more inside]
Congratulations to metafilter's own changeling, whose debut young adult novel, Like Mandarin, was released today! [more inside]
OCD pony request: minus sign instead of hyphen to un-favorite a comment? [more inside]
The thread on "You are Listening to Los Angeles" was linked by the daily wh.at yesterday. If you haven't seen the site, it's by mefi's own idontlikewords. [more inside]
Replayed 4chanfilter like this just does't seem like the best of the web.
Is the only appropriate response to coddle people's sense of victimhood? [more inside]
This FPP about stalking isn't going too well. Can we at least sort of refrain from reflexively blaming the victim?
Low-priority pony: mobile stylesheet for profile pages? [more inside]
"A 5-minute framework for fostering better conversations in comments sections." NPR's Matt Thompson interviews Jessamyn about why a thread about the assault on reporter Lara Logan turned so ugly on NPR's site, but didn't on the blue.
What are the all-time longest and shortest post titles? Broken down by subsite, if possible.
Problems with entering cities/suburbs with using the Google Maps plugin in IRL. [more inside]

Pony Request: Adding Health Month to the external profiles one can add to their profile. [more inside]
A pony request to fix a 3rd party's crappy website... [more inside]
I was afraid from the start that this post would get out of hand. Unfortunately it seems I was right. If we have to rage, let's do it here instead. And while we're at it, maybe we can discuss whether & how a different framing could have prevented or minimized the train wreck we see before us.
Has anyone ever looked at which posts/comments have been most favorited by men, and which by women? [more inside]
Qwiki on MetaFilter: Known as 'me fie' to its members… MetaFilter was founded by Matthew 'Honkey' in 1999.
This might be a longshot, but are there any mefites that would be interested in an unofficial oekaki drawing board, or some other kind of drawing/art/Muro/doodle/paintchat board/community? [more inside]
The Listening Room -- which drew a lot of interest from Mefites on its initial appearance back in late January -- is back up. [more inside]
This article about NPR fans' insufferable carping about NPR reminded me of a website I know. [more inside]
PonyFilter: Can we filter our favorites by topic? [more inside]
Please help me avoid repeating a question! Anyone remember this task/todo request recently on the green? For a reverse countdown, a la "18 days since you went to the gym." Searching hasn't helped. [more inside]
So that new 'more questions' thing on the ask.metafilter front page? How do I turn it off? I don't want to load an ever growing mega page with everything all at once and apparently neither does my computer. Downloading small chunks was easier for the computer's processer and works way better for my skimming, and I want to go back. [more inside]
Have you ever read Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye? Come discuss it! All you need to do is check out Professor Amy Hungerford's lecture about the book, sign up for Metachat if you haven't already, and then check out the Metachat discussion thread about the book on March 7. [more inside]
Are you a geek? Do charts and graphs help you accomplish things? Do you have personal goals that might could use some group encouragement? Join Team Metafilter for the March game over at Health Month! [more inside]
Request for new feature. [more inside]
Just thought it worth mentioning that one of the guys behind the new Pruitt-Igoe doc linked on the front page is a MeFite who showed up in the thread last night to thank MeFi (or Memepool) for turning him on to the subject of his first film, Jandek on Corwood, back in 2002.
So somehow a (reform? cultural but not religious?) Jewish comedienne who wears a t-shirt marked "I love Jew Cock" is relevant to a post about the pain of middle-aged shomer negiah. [more inside]
