Probably another stupid question: I have a lengthy "more inside" for the front page post I am working on and I can't seem to get paragraph breaks to work. The "more inside" comes out as one long block of text and I want to break it up. I have searched the FAQ and tried my limited HTML magic. What code do I use to break paragraphs up around here? Sorry for the n00b question.

Mathowie hates late people! ;-)
Is it possible to have the AskMe front page show the last 12 hours of questions instead of whatever it currently does (a number? a lesser time?)? As of now, questions asked in the morning appear to get many more replies than ones asked at night, which scroll off the bottom as the morning-risers repeatedly ask where they can get a tattoo or a decent meal in New York. ;-)

Is Projects only for 100% (or close to 100%) web-based projects? I ask, because I'm producing a play that's opening in NYC (where there are many MeFites). I would like to announce it, but it's not a website. (My theatre company HAS a website, and I could link to the play's page, but that seems like a fudge to me. Yes, there's a website, but the real project is in meatspace, not cyberspace.)

Quick question - this is something I haven't been able to figure out. How do I post an FPP where the first words are not a link, such as

Am I just missing something? Forgive me if this is a hopelessly stupid question.

Considering the recent events in Lebanon, can we perhaps consider a bit of extra judiciousness with postings like
this one,and commenting therein if they stay up? I don't think anyone questions the gravity of the situation there, but most posts dealing with it are basically Newsfilter situations that devolve into extremely impassioned flamewars and insoluble arguments about the validity of a number of Big Issues.

A FPP rant was recently deleted after I began to compose my response. Hence, by the time I was ready to post, the thread was closed to new comments... and I lost several good paragraphs that I would have been content to post elsewhere. In a handful of comments,
kjc managed to casually explain us that
Anne Frank's diary is a postwar forgery and Elie Wiesel (whom he calls "Weasel") is a liar. The user seems to have a problem with the Jews, you know, the
"indifferent" ..."tribe" that the first time around
didn't accept Jesus as the Savior and won't accept him when he comes back, the ones who "holocausted" "tens of millions of Russians" and, why not, there's time to enlighten us on the Jewish Bankers who did many bad things using "
the Rothschilds International Crime Syndicate". Now, none of my friends belong to the Klan or to neonazi groups so in a way I might be guilty of discriminating against nazis, but really, revisionist lies and antisemitism are hardly part of that elusive Best of the Web (especially when they're stink bombs planted in great FPP's like madamjujujive's). Also, keep in mind that around here people get banned for saying "fuck you" to other users or for making vitriolic fun of the overweight and their eating habits, so speech seems to have some limits here already after all. Curious: is it just me or has the number of votes cast in Projects dropped significantly over the last month or so? It seems like in the heady formative days you couldn't walk more than two feet without bumping into a project with 25+ votes. I'm fairly new to MetaFilter, and really only ever read the Ask section. I know - and respect - that I'm not supposed to post a self-link anywhere. But in a question I read yesterday, I saw that a lot of people object to websites that play sounds (as do I). I've found a program that lets me mute the whole browser window, and would like to put that info somewhere as I think a lot of people would like it. But I do run a site that gives discounts on software, and will have one on that program next week.
So I guess I have 2 questions - can I politely post a link to the program at all? It's not news, just something it sounds like people want. And second, can I post that my site will be discounting it next week?
Thanks,

Couple questions:
1) If I go to the AskMeFi "New Question" page, I do not see buttons for bold, italics, link and spell check. It appears that only plain text is allowed (or html, which I don't know). However, if I go to someone else's question, the comment area has all of the above. Does my browser/setup have a problem? I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.4, I've got various extensions (NoScript, Mouse Gestures, FoxClocks, ScrapBook, del.icio.us and ScreenGrab).
2) What is the easiest way to include a picture in the question? Posting it to flickr (or equivalent) and linking to it?
I've read the FAQ and performed searches on both topics, but could not find answers.
Thanks!

The latter is both more readable, and in keeping with (albeit unwritten) internet convention. The former uses a symbol whose meaning is already defined, and does not have anything to do with "read more about the preceeding word here."

It was a philosophical question that could have produced some genuinely interesting ideas/commentary. Not every question on AskMeFi needs to have a immediately definable solution to be considered a good question. Moreover, despite it reading like a term paper question, it hasn't been addressed by most, if any, publications and answers to these types of questions can lead to greater understanding of political and social phenomena. Quit trying to make AskMeFi so damn practical as to eliminate thought.

Dear AskMe: There is a prince in Nigeria who desperately needs my help. What is the best way to transfer $50K to an overseas bank account?

I did not answer
this question with the punchline from the "You no worry! Wait two weeks. Dick fall off by itself!" joke. I'd like it to be known it took enormous will.
You're welcome

Would it be a good idea to display Music playlists on profile pages along with posts, comments, and faves?

This has to have been covered before, but why one question per subscriber per week on AskMeFi, but no discernable limit (or is there) on postings to MetaFilter?
Referrals to previous threads on this subject welcomed. I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything obvious.

This is a bad post. I don't dislike single FPPs, but a single link that points to a single product for sale on the internet, with no extra information or interesting stuff...is not in any way showing the best of the internet. There are hundreds of these for sale from all sorts of companies, and they've been around for a long, long time.
To top it all off, I question that and my post (containing one word: "Spamfilter?") was apparently removed. I can deal with that, but the issue at heart still exists.

Are MeFi favorites a permanent part of your profile, or do they change when the mood strikes you? I've been wondering about people marking favorites lately and my biggest question is, "How many of you use the system to bookmark things for a permanent reminder and how many use the system as a temporary way to keep track of a certain thread or comment?" In addition, do you find yourself using the system and your past favorites a couple months down the road, or is it a once and done thing that you never pay attention to after a couple of days?

I run a
Greasemonkey script that highlights "heavy links" - links such a Youtube or .mov that might take a while to download.
Should this script action be incorporated into the meta universe?
Proper etiquitte is to flag such heavy links but if you Firefox users install this script and say look at
posts tagged with video, you will see many examples of posters who bother to tag their posts but don't flag their links. Then there are many who don’t tag or flag.
Even if you don't support such highlighting at the site (It will just make people lazy), how are my filters? What else do I need to include? [jeez, trying to get the below to display properly was very trying]
HeavyExtensions = ['swf', 'ram', 'rm', 'wmv', 'asx', 'mov', 'pdf', 'mp3', 'mpg', 'mpeg', 'wav'];
HeavyURLs = [
/youtube.com\/.*\?v=/,
/video.google.com\/videoplay/,
/video.google.com\/googleplayer.swf/,
/collegehumor.com\/movies\/.*\//,
]

MeFi Music rev 2 feature blowout!!! Things added today:
-
New Charts showing top favorites/playlists added in just the last three days (for new, awesome stuff you might have missed) and favorites/playlists from your contacts (what your friends like, you probably like too).
-
playlists have podcast feeds, so you can just add it to iTunes and download the songs directly. When you add new songs to your playlist, iTunes can recheck and pull down those new ones as well.
-
tag pages have podcast feeds and an embedded player. Want to hear everything tagged with hiphop in iTunes? Now you can.
- songs/comment history has been added to user pages, including a podcast feed for each and every user so if you want a copy of every song ever done by say,
cortex, you can. Also added the embedded player to song history pages.
- more fixes coming later today, but I wanted to get the word out on the new features.

Quick question - when I'm playing something in me-fi music and switch windows, I lose the sound. This seems unusual - normally I can hear background sound in any open Firefox window. What am I doing wrong?

This Ask Metafilter is devolving into this question rather than how the situation should be handled.

Doesn't make sense unless MetaFilter is coming from the South Pacific.

Question regarding the new Music section: Current guidelines run along the lines of "Music you have written and/or recorded". I have an album which I helped produce, but did not write/record. I was very much involved in the creation of this album and would like to post an example or two. [MI]

Seems to me that
this question on AskMe is asking for advice on how to break the law, specifically how to break immigration law restricting the scope of the poster's employment. In order to get around the immigration laws, the income couldn't be reported to IRS, so he's asking how to break tax laws too.
I don't really care, but it seems to me that if "How can I break this law," violates the askme guidelines, then this post needs to be yanked.

Any chance we can get a +fave link on the front page for each item, especially on the green? (I'm thinking Digg-style, AJAX based would be very pretty, though potentially too Web 2.0 for the likes of some Mefites...)

I'm concerned about AskMe, particularly with regard to relationship questions, becoming a forum for members to moralize and reinforce the most conservative expectations of behavior.
Like in this thread, for instance. I don't think it's in anyone's interest, and particularly so if we want a diverse and enlightening dialogue, for threads like this to become a pile-on of abstract moralizing about committed relationships in general.

Is it just me or are the tags on

Wondering if it's just me, or a bug: go to
my answers on AskMeFi. Scroll down to the first answer, "comment posted at 11:35 AM CST on May-21-06", that is beneath the question, "I believe that another tenant has place an air "freshener" in the hallway out side of our apartments in violation of their lease. I want it removed. What should I do?".
When I click on this, my copy of Firefox goes a little bugshit. I can click on the tabs, but the actual display in the screen doesn't change at all, and a lot of the interface elements become unresponsive. I have to quit (not force quit, the menus are still accessible). I'm using Firefox v1.5.0.4 for Mac OS X, using the Whitehart-NC theme.

I noticed that the download icon in Mefi Music vanished when I logged out. Is this intentional (to cut down bandwidth demands)?
The dl links go to a straightforward .mp3 files, though, so I'm assuming that you could link to one of those (on your blog, say) and a non-member could download a song by clicking on the link. But would that be wrong?

For the big pile of stuff: How about a wikipedia-style "Mefi posts that link to this post" box on the side of each thread (that has been linked back to)? So when someone links back to a post, that old post now links forward to the new thread. Especially useful if you search and find an older thread, and would like also to read the subsequent threads which say "previously discussed on MetaFilter..." Ideally, it would pick up on comments as well as posts that link to a specific thread (not to a specific comment in the thread, though).

It would be useful if one could add tags to another person's Ask Metafilter post—it could clarify the content where the original poster has neglected tagging altogether, or where the poster's tags are vague. The user-added tags could be marked as such, and kept separate from the poster's tags. Is this possible? Or would we be afraid of abuse?

I too have been taken with MuFi Madness™. I excitedly went to showcase my band's work, and- Oh! the horror! I was presented with an error on upload:
The MIME type of the uploaded file "audio/x-mpeg" was not accepted by the server.
I use Audacity for my mp3 encoding, and am at my wits' end. Is there a way to rebrand a file's MIME type, or convert it? I'm quite eager to get in on the action, but need your help. Thanks, fellow citizens.
