Let's trade Nintendo 3DS friend codes! [more inside]
Can we have a "follow thread" button? [more inside]
MetaTalk posts will be queued this weekend starting this evening and ending late Monday. [more inside]
Another Fantasy Football league for MeFites [more inside]
Why don't we have in-line video for non-members? I typically avoid sending posts with great videos in them to (like this) to non-members because they will just see a wall of text without being able to play videos in-line. Would it be possible to add the in-line video player for everyone who visits metafilter?
We've been using Fanscribed to make transcripts of the Metafilter Podcast, and it's been working out well! We've just finished the most recent three - #69,* #70, and #71! Episode #68 is now ready to go. now. Join in! [more inside]
Metafilter's own Avery Edison on our (hypothetical) thread with Obama: Thread is immediately deleted for being too similar to a recent post (“The Wire and the White House: Grantland asks ‘Is Obama All In The Game’?”) [more inside]
Thank you so much for showing the love on the sidebar. Beyond deep appreciation, I would also like to offer this token of gratitude. [more inside]
Some time on Tuesday, ask.metafilter.com mobile version stopped scrolling on my Motorola Droid I running Android 2.2.3. Still no worky. [more inside]
Looking for an askme post that I am unable to locate. [more inside]
MetaFilter is not a betting site. [more inside]
So. The folks at NBCNews seem to be fans of this great site. It's Lebowski everywhere!
Can we just once have a thread about apple, that isn't Blazecock Pileon versus the world? [more inside]
Need help finding post about high schools student suspended/expelled? for writing (nasty) reviews about other students [more inside]
I just wanted to highlight 1) how cool it is that the schizophrenic programmer of Losethos has chosen to contribute to the thread about his operating system, and 2) that in response (almost all) the members of this site treat him with an admirable level of respect and genuine curiosity.
Super minor pony request: the option to add a This Is My Jam updating widget to profiles? [more inside]
PONY: (# New) links in Recent Activity [more inside]
Hurricane Isaac roll call. How are Gulf Coast MeFites holding up? [more inside]
I like the MeFi Podcast! The last one was posted June 12 so if I am not mistaken we are in the longest between-podcasts interval since they got started in 2007. That was a 20-podcast year. We've had four so far this year, good lengthy ones, to be sure. What has changed? Are people not so interested anymore, or are the mods just too busy?
I would very much appreciate some help finding a particular comment from the Blue. [more inside]
Do unexplained YouTube links annoy you? I don't mean FPs with a pattern of clearly identified YT links, or someone making a topical and fairly obvious post like "I like this version better"; but just an inline link with zero context. [more inside]
There are a bunch of comments suggesting there was originally a misspelling in The Whelk's Foul Bachelor Goons FPP, including one by restless_nomad saying he'd never seen a word butchered so horrifically by accident. Now I'm really curious what the original spelling was. Does anyone remember?
MeFi is the best! Thank you for restoring a piece of my childhood. [more inside]
Trying to find an AskMe answer about what to do if you're swamped by the press/paparazzi. [more inside]
I am sure this is covered somewhere, but I'm not finding it. How do I use the mobile site on my android phone while logged in? [more inside]
Is the percentage of MetaFilter visitors using OS X or iOS higher, lower, or equivalent to the 9.5% of computer users in general?
Not a call out of anyone specifically, and certainly "be the change you want to see" but the front page today is comprised entirely of one-liners, mostly SYTL. Maybe it's decompression from the August Best Post Contest, but typically MetaFilter is known for it's "essay-like" posts and it feels like reddit today. [more inside]
Quick one; how can I answer an AskMeFi anonymously?
There must already be Ask questions about how to increase business/get more clients as a freelancer, but I'm not hitting the right search terms or something. Can anyone point me? Thanks!
Can we favorite a deletion reason?
I'm rather new, but I feel there's a disturbing anti-psychiatric trend to Metafilter [more inside]
Hi MeFites! This is the discussion thread for the 2012 MetaFilter Pronunciation Survey, available for 5 days to all logged-in site users. Even if you already took the 2010 survey, it'd be valuable to have you do it again. Additionally, this time around all survey participants will have the option to have a word frequency table of their MetaFilter posting history generated and emailed to them. If you would like to take the 2012 survey, I would ask that you please do so BEFORE you read or participate in the discussion here (as well as before you view the previous MetaTalk thread about the 2010 survey). This is to help ensure that your responses to these survey questions are entirely your own decisions and are not influenced by the opinions of those participating in this thread. If you have already taken the 2012 survey or are not interested in taking the survey but would like to discuss it, please go ahead and do so here. [more inside]
Does Mefi take respect seriously? Because it sure doesn't seem that way to me [more inside]
Inspired by samsara's and deezil's helpful malware removal guides on their profile pages, I've written a short and practical beginner's guide recommending domain name registrars, web hosting, content management systems and e-mail services. I hope the guide is of some use to people who want to host their own stuff, as opposed using hosted platforms like Tumblr or Blogger, using solid and hassle-free tech. [more inside]
This month's Wired Magazine features an article about teh intarwebz fascination with cats, and the first entry in its "Invasion of the teh Kittehs" timeline credits MeFi! [more inside]
2012 Metafilter Football Smackdown! [more inside]
AskMe gets a lot of questions about which software to use to clean a Windows PC. Anyone have a particularly good one bookmarked? [more inside]
We should have a best comment contest. I don't know how it would be decided exactly, but presumably the mods have come up with some criteria for the best post contest, so perhaps they could be applied to comments.
I notice that a few posts have been deleted already today (and yesterday there were seven!), so I was wondering if the mods have any stories about days where they had to delete an extreme number of posts from the blue? [more inside]
Is there a way to make MeFi more readable on my iPad? [more inside]
Posts about finding work you can do from home? [more inside]
Can someone point me to a post (in ask.me I think) that featured examples of good science-fiction in non-Western Europe settings? [more inside]
What's the best way to use your favorites? How do you make the most of them? Looking for tips, tricks, hacks, organization methods, the works. [more inside]
Perhaps the AskMetafilter question form should point out that the title of the post does not appear on the front page? [more inside]
Don't just get a lawyer, get a shark. [more inside]
loquacious seems to need some help. Is there anyone in Seattle/King County who could lend him a hand? [more inside]
Clarification about Projects (not on the FAQ): do projects need an external URL? [more inside]
Village, village, village, village, village... buy a village. Done. I'm sure that this post is both good quality and made in good faith. I am however wondering where we stand on Pepsi Blue stuff these days, even that it's extolling a Rio Grande commercial card set and video game. [more inside]
Weirdness in the color of just-clicked links on an iPad. [more inside]
Ten years. Thank you. [more inside]
What a difference a year makes. [more inside]
Minor display bug in mobile style sheet on the blue only: menu at the bottom is bold, inside posts. [more inside]
From time to time, people who are the topic of a thread register and participate in the conversation. I was looking for some kind of list in the Wiki and didn't find anything. So I searched through tags and found these: newmember, mefisown, metafiltersown. Anywhere else?
The site search sometimes highlights words as hits which are not hits. [more inside]
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAZ!!!!!!
This long and discursive post has a huge amount of editorialising in it and would really be a better fit on someone's personal blog.
Is Metafilter compatible with the iPhone Reader function? Is there some step I need to take to make a post's comments readable in Safari's Reader? [more inside]
Grantland again? [more inside]
Is it bad form to post a third (and possibly fourth) travel question that is quite similar in content to two I've already posted? [more inside]
Is there a 'triggering' etiquette here? If so what is it, because I can't find any reference to tagging posts as 'triggering' on the FAQ. [more inside]
I remember a blog post somewhere advocating for strong moderation, with the theme 'users are the problem.' But now I can't find it. [more inside]
Just wanted to respond to concerns here, rather than creating a derail in this thread. Replying here because if the anon OP has seen the comment I am responding to, it might be more helpful than taking it private to Memail with the commenter. [more inside]
So, as a newbie (on here; rather older in real life) and as (currently) an Englishman, is "Metafiltered" an acceptable verb? e.g. "Spotted this great little news story so I Metafiltered it", or, like, are people going to start getting all OED on me if I do that?
If you've never visited MefightClub, or maybe you drifted away because of the server capacity issues we were having for a while a while back, the site's had a big round of updates, and right this very minute is a great time to come play games and hang out with us! [more inside]
Facebook has finished its roll-out of an edit feature for comments on wall posts/comments. If you have a Facebook account, I'd ask you to take a look at it. I think it works and would like to discuss why it could work on MetaFilter. [more inside]
At first I thought someone had hit "post" twice, but no, it was just that that Fight or Flight and Zoomorphic entered the Metafilter Singularity at 1:01 PM.
Another neat new member: Hugo-winning author Tim Pratt just joined up to comment in a thread about the wonderful Israeli adaptation of one of his short stories, "Impossible Dreams."
One of the subjects of the KittyCam research project has appeared in the KittyCam thread and is answering questions! Hooray! [more inside]
FAQ: "There is an upper limit of 100 favorites per day". What's a day? [more inside]
How strong is your MetaFilter password? [more inside]
Searching for a (possibly) Canadian female pop singer who was mentioned on here sometime in the past few years. [more inside]
It's that time once again--the London Mefite contingent is going to do battle tonight with Reddit in an epic pub quiz. It's a smaller crowd this time, with only nine of us confirmed, but it's still enough to do two teams. Come by and cheer us on, or do so here. As usual, one of us will be posting updates at the halfway mark and afterward.
Can we get a frequency count for users following / tracking tags? [more inside]
Hey, how about some way to re-order the songs in playlists on MeFi Music? [more inside]
Looking for a comment describing a Chinese or Chinese ancestry persons description of a family arguing about who would pay the bill at a restaurant. [more inside]
Hey, could we have another run of shirts printed out? I'd like to buy one.
Is there a way to sort my favorites by author, or to get a tabulation of quantity by author? [more inside]
Isn’t coming into this thread to say "Photorealism sucks" and this one to say "I’m not into fashion, who cares what your jeans look like, quit being so shallow" pretty much the same as coming into a baseball post and saying you hate baseball? [more inside]
Looking for a comment thread that I believe may have originated at Reddit and was linked here: stories from men talking about how they (often painfully) missed clues from women who were interested in them, and the agony and regret when they realized what was actually happening at a later date. Thanks!
There was a blog (tumblr, maybe?) posted a while back that had screenshots of cartoon frames that compensated for the lack of motion blur by multiplying the image onto itself. The only one I can recall was Spongebob with three or four faces. Anyone remember what it was?
Back on June 8, the Metafilter Music Challenge announcement was made: cover an assigned track from Radiohead's OK Computer. Lotsa folks signed on. Now it's August 1st, deadline is passed. Check out the 46 submissions that came in!
