Will stats for AskMe be available on the profile page?

Are we adding stats for AskMe to a user's info page? That is how I mostly keep track of threads in which I am usually only marginally involved. If this has been covered before I openly apologize.

Posting links directly to download sites

Etiquette question. I posted this AM about a small software application. After posting it occurred to me that the link was directly to the download site version tracker and not to the software author site. I felt this may have been bad etiquette on my part and I followed up with a comment redirecting to the author site.

My question, Is it bad etiquette to post an interest link to a download site (such as version tracker)? Presumably because many Metafiler viewers will click through to the download site just to "look" or follow the link and thus adding unnecessary traffic to this site.

On a side note, it would be useful to edit a post after posting it , any plans to implement this functionality?

It used to be frowned upon to post links from other link agregators/filters. Has it changed?

When I used to read MeFi regularly, it was generally accepted that you didn't post anything from "the usual suspects" such as memepool, boing boing, b3ta, etc. because they themselves are weblogs about interesting, offbeat links and most readers read them as well as MeFi. Seeing as this "LSD art" story has been the top item on memepool for a week, I guess this policy has changed. (This is really not meant to sound rude or snide, apologies if it's taken that way)

I posted this thread yesterday and someone hated it....

I posted this thread yesterday, in which every word was a link to a different site, something I find fun to do (I do provide alt text for each link). A user commented, however, that this practice should be banned, initially because it is 'lame' but later clarified her position. Is this linking style collectively annoying enough to be banned or flameworthy or is really just a matter of individual preference?

MeFi Film Fest?

If one were to put together a Metafilter film festival, including undistributed short films that have been linked on the blue, which films would make the cut? Off the top of my head I can think of both A Shoggoth on the Roof and 80s Ending. Any others?

How do I modify the nice titles javascript?

How are the blue pop-ups (as in y2karl's posts) made?
I'd like to borrow the idea for a web page. I found the nice title web site, but I'd like to change a few things and I don't know how. The java script looks intimidating. I don't want the URL to be displayed, no transparency, and I'd like rounded corners as seen on MeFi.

Link redux: MeFi gets too common-linky?

Without getting specific, I regularly see links on metafilter these days to items which not only have previously been posted to every site on the intarweb and my grandmothers mailing list, but which have usually appeared on my television set some twelve to twenty four hours before they show up here. I fully realise that the intentions of the participants re-shape the intentions of communities over time, and that if I don't like it here I'm free to leave.

However, I first got interested in this site because it was the best filter on the web, not the wittiest discussion forum, so I'll poke my head over the parapet one more time to ask the question: what is the purpose of this site any more as opposed to, say, blogdex? Do we still fulfill a useful function, or as Matt obliquely eludes elsewhere, are human filters wearing the orange safety reflectors of the web these days, compared to the robots? And if not, how can we raise the bar?

Bring back the via!

Whatever happened to good old via? Lately attributions on MetaFilter have become rarer and rarer. Have we all suddenly started finding our own links the hard way or has the habit sadly declined?

Did I see this link here?

was I dreaming?

I thought I saw a link here a few days ago, about a bookmark that would quickly let you know, using amazon's database, whether a specific cd was put out by a member of the riaa. but when I searched for this link here, it was gone. And I didn't see it on lofi, when I looked there. Normally, I wouldn't care too much about a deleted thread, but I can't seem to find the link in question via google either. can anyone help me out?

Browser woes with big posts

When I shift click on one of Y2Karl's opuses. The magic blue link info box gets left open and doesn't close when I mouse over another link. Doing the shift-clicking alt-tab shuffle leaves a whole string of them open.

Links do improve and furnish a comment

Links do improve and furnish a comment: When people do a little research before they comment and include a helpful or amusing link (and some users, like sheauga and madamjujujive put in almost as much work as they do in their posts), threads gain a new life and go off in all sorts of interesting directions. Sometimes deliciously and all at once. Some more threadbare posts, like the Libeskind one, are actually repaired and rehabilitated by the ensuing links. For some, linky comments may be a pain - do many actually click on them, given that a few don't even read the main links? - but I, for one, think they're dandy and would like to see more of them.

New posting page confusion

You are posting a link without a description, or a description without a link, please correct this The links are included, with brackets and tags, in the description as usual since I joined 2-ish years ago. What are we fishing for here?

You forgot to include a title, please correct this Did no such thing, included the text string "poo969" in the Link title: field. What are we fishing for here? Have we been studying bondage-and-discipline languages with Bucky Wirth? Just askin'.

PS, Search Metatalk "please correct this" Nothing was found with that search criteria, try searching again.

I changed the way new/same window targetting is done

I changed the way new/same window targetting is done, so if you have your preferences set to "open links in a new window" and links internal to metafilter are spawning new windows, let me know and I'll fix them. Only links within posts, comments and on the front page should lead to new windows, everything else should stay the same.

Kablam: were you not content with comments like this last time?

I find it doubtful that there is anything on this website that is not a lie...You know, being linked to by MeFi is going to make this nazi's guy's day...It's not out of line to expect some sort of warning, if the post has a link of questionable nature...Crap link=Crap Post...we don't want to give these assholes hits..."Various posters

help me with posting a link in a thread

I'm new to this so I was wondering if someone could help me with posting a link in a thread. When the prompt comes up for the url, I copy and paste it. But when I preview it, it doesn't come out as a link but the whole thing with the brackets and all. (I don't know what you call that) I figured it would come out ok as the link when it was posted, but it didn't. Could someone please tell me with what I'm doing wrong?

Listing links on user profile pages

To avoid cluttering up the front page, is it OK for those of us who come across a lot of interesting links to use our user pages to list some of those we'd like to share but probably won't merit much discussion? I'm worried about using up bandwidth and the old accusation of using MetaFilter as one's personal blog.

If it's OK, what's the acceptable limit? Would five or six links be acceptable? Or should the opportunity be used (as some, like Zachsmind, have done) to list some of our favourite MetaFilter threads, for example? Please advise.

Airing dirty linen in public

Given that MeTa is mostly used for private discussions about what goes on in MeFi, should there be links to it on the front page of MeFi for all to see? Would it be more appropriate for it to be discreetly linked from somewhere else or, to take it to the extreme, only available to logged-in users?

Airing dirty linen in public is not usually considered the "done thing" and hiding it from public scrutiny may allow more open and honest discussions.

Post construction advice wanted

Assuming one has identified 1 interesting front page "lead" post and 3 "supporting" posts that may add value to a discussion. What is the better : a) Include all 4 posts on the front page and be done with it. b)have 1 lead post in the front page and 3 supporting posts in the first comment. c) sprinkle 3 supporting posts one by one as discussion develops. Realize every situation is unique but some general guidance would be very helpful.

Is Deep Linking Good Linking?

Is Deep Linking Good Linking? Jakob Nielsen says websites should encourage deep links as they enhance usability. He suggests three general guidelines. Nutcote(please scroll down)raises the question of etiquette: "Maintaining a links-based weblog, this is an important issue. I can see good points on both sides; to some extent it depends on the kind of site being linked to. When linking to a personal site, deep linking might not be good manners (depending on the site); but this is not the case when linking to an article on a major news site. It is a worldwide _web_ after all.".

Since this is an issue which affects a lot of us, I'd like to know what other bloggers think. Specially as I suspect the decision whether or not to deep-link(as opposed to just linking to an irrelevant main page as well as to the intended page) is not as simple as Nielsen makes it sound. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Commenters Try to Fix Broken Link in FPP

This is interesting. Postroad's post had a bad link and other members went searching for an appropriate link. And finally they did find one which seems to fit perfectly(Good work, Tubes and Real9!)
I had a link too, but hesitated, as I didn't know whether this would be intruding on Postroad's post. How could I tell it was my link he was thinking of? Is it ethical or just Darwinian to provide a FPP's missing link?
So - is it right to "find a link" by proxy, based on a post's wording? (FWIW, I think it's acceptable, but strange).
We all know people who post to the FP should check that their links work. But shouldn't they also hang around for an hour or so to see if any there are any solvable problems?
