Twisties Blue?
So I bought a pack of "Twist of Fate" Twisties here in Melbourne AU - and the packaging tells you to "open the Meta Filter". [more inside]
How do we feel in 2024 about single-link FPP food/recipe posts?
What is your opinion about FPPs about recipes? Is a single-link FPP where the single link is a recipe too thin? (Discussion of the same question in February 2013.) Does the much-lamented rise of the "recipe" that's actually a 1,000-2,000 word essay wrapped around a recipe change the calculus for you? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Aid and Comfort
Happy Metatalktail Hour, chat fans! This week I'd like to ask you about your comfort food(s): what are they, and why are they comforting? Something from your childhood, or just a taste / texture that is somehow soothing or reassuring? Are there rules for comfort foods? Only certain colors? Is crunch allowed? Required? Do you ever acquire *new* comfort food, or is it The One True Nosh forever? [more inside]
Food Blogs!
There is an FPP going on that is hot and heavy with impassioned opinions on what a cooking blog/food blog/recipe site should look like.
In the FPP, there are many amazing links to apps, blogs, sites, etc. that work for that particular person.
What are some online tools that work best for you for the best cooking experience?
(I've done my best to add the links from the FPP to the "read more" area. Apologies if I missed any.) [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Everybody needs a π²
You've traded in your magic (overthinking) beans, or you've managed to free a grateful food genie, or your foodie godmother has wielded her magic wand, or you've stumbled upon a hungry dragon's unguarded treasure ... anyway, the tl/dr is that now you have a fabulous enchanted plate that once a day will fill up with whatever dish you summon forth. So what will you be eating from your magical plate today? Oh, but just one more thing... [more inside]
US Thanksgiving
It's US Thanksgiving and a lot of us aren't celebrating the way we would've liked. But here's a thread for community and chat; I'm thankful you're here, Mefites. [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: I could really go for...
It's the weekend, Mefites! It's cold where I am, and I could really go for a hot homemade cinnamon roll. Not that I'm going to make one or anything... Do you have a food daydream? [more inside]
Tasty and/or lovely things
Recently I discovered a recipe for so-called one-ingredient watermelon sorbet. It's basically frozen, seeded watermelon chunks that you freeze, then break up in a blender, then refreeze. It was unexpectedly tasty. Also, on a podcast today I heard Colin Hay and his song "Come Tumblin' Down" for the first time, which was fun. What tasty and/or lovely things are helping you cope during these sad, hard times?
Metatalktail Hour: What's Cooking?
Happy Weekend, MetaFilter! This week, because I am sick to death of literally everything I cook due to non-stop quarantine cooking, I want to know what you're cooking lately that's really good! [more inside]
What's for dinner?
We're eating breakfast for dinner. Egg in a basket, or as I grew up calling it "egg-bread". How about you? What are you eating tonight? Feel free to share recipes. Be kind & stay safe.
MetaPeanutButter
Peanut butter: crunchy or smooth? There can only be one. Choose.
What's eatin', you?
You know what's weird right now? Besides, like, everything? Food. Lots of routines are disrupted, lots of supply lines and food-sourcing habits have gotten all sideways.
So: what's going on with your fooding? How's the whole eating thing? Any happy discoveries or rediscoveries? Any weird surprises? Any big shortage headaches? Any horrible cooking failures? Snacking surprises? Foodly frustrations? Can you buy literally any yeast? Get it out, let's talk all kinds of food stuff, let's do a whole roundup of where everybody's at.
π Cake? or π₯§ Pie?
As the Highlander always says: βThere can be only one.β Are you team cake or team pie? Discuss. [more inside]
Metafilter, can you help me find homes in the SF Bay Area for yeast?
I kept getting yeast orders cancelled, so I stomped off and ordered a case of SAF Instant Red yeast from a wholesaler, figuring that if it actually came I could redistribute it. And it did come, and so I have 15+ 1lb packages that I would like to deliver to people. I don't mind driving around to do it, I'm already going from San Jose to San Francisco to deliver some to a friend so I can make a circuit of the bay within reason. My only ask would be that if you can afford it, you make a small donation to Second Harvest.
MetaEggnog π₯π₯π
End of another long week, let's talk about something other than politics. Many of us are coming up on winter holiday celebrations. One of the more traditional drinks consumed here in N. America is eggnog. Let's talk nog. Love it? Hate it? Do you make it yourself? Do you have a special family recipe? Do you buy the store-bought kind? Is there a particular brand or flavor you prefer? Do you add alochol to yours? Do you have any amusing/horrific stories related to eggnog? Did you know that eggnog once sparked a military riot (known as the 'Grog Mutiny') at West Point! Feel free to talk about any other holiday drinks you consume around this time of year. Or what you're currently drinking in this moment. It's an open thread. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
π§ MetaGarlic
We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about garlic.
βGarlic is divine. Few food items can taste so many distinct ways, handled correctly. Misuse of garlic is a crime...Please, treat your garlic with respect...Avoid at all costs that vile spew you see rotting in oil in screwtop jars. Too lazy to peel fresh? You don't deserve to eat garlic.β β Anthony Bourdain, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary UnderbellyLove it? Hate it? Any garlic-related stories or adventures? Do you grow it at home yourself? Do you have any special recipes that are garlic-specific? Feel free to share them here with us. Is there a particular varietal that you seek out? Did you know that Les Blank made a documentary all about garlic - 'Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers (1980)'. Here is the trailer. Let's talk about all things related to garlic. Remember to be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
π₯π³π₯ MetaBreakfast π₯π₯£π©
End of another week, let's talk about something not related to politics. Let's chat about breakfast. What is your favorite type of breakfast food? Are you a fan of cereal? If so, what kind? Or maybe you're more into oatmeal. Are you an eggs, bacon/sausage, toast kind of person? Do you like maple syrup on your pancakes? Bagels? How about breakfast for dinner? Or maybe you do not conform to these types of predictable conventions and just eat whatever you want? What about pizza? Or steak? Or noodles? If you hate breakfast and generally skip it, feel free to talk about that too. Love it or hate it, let's talk about breakfast. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
Metatalktail Hour: FOOOOOOOD

Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. What are you having for dinner? Feel free to share a recipe or photos. Are you eating out? Leftovers? Cooking something easy and fast? Or fancy and complicated? Or maybe you're changing it up and trying something new? What's for dinner, I want to know. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about fruit. What is your favorite fruit to eat? Do you cut it a certain way? Do you grill it? Do you chill it? Do you add anything to your fruit to make it taste better? Are there certain fruits you avoid or dislike? Let's get fruity. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.
Metatalktail Hour: Warm Weather Food
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, it's finally warming up in Chicago, so I want to know what you like to cook and eat when it's warm outside! (Because by a month into summer I am bored of all my warm-weather recipes so clearly I need more of them!) [more inside]
βWaiter, there's a Meta in my soup.β
End of another week, let's lighten the mood and talk about something that is not politics. Here in Canada it's bitterly cold and I could do with some warmth, some happy in my tummy. I'm thinking about soup. Tomato, chicken-noodle, broccoli-cheddar, roasted squash, whatever it is, share your recipes with MetaFilter. Feel free to also talk about your favorite store-bought ready made soup. Or maybe it's a memory of a really good soup a loved one made for you. Whether it's a broth, bisque, consomme, or chowder, I want to talk about soup. Also,a gentle remember to be kind to each other and take care of yourself.

Metatalktail Hour: Local Food
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, theora55 wants to know "what foods people love that are local. For instance, Columbus, Ohio, has sauerkraut balls, which are hella tasty, also, the jokes write themselves, albeit badly." [more inside]
MetaThanksgiving
It's Thanksgiving in America, a day to give thanks, spend time with family, friends, & loved ones and share a warm meal. 2018 has not always been the most easy of years to live through, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share thanks, to acknowledge that we made it another year on this planet, that we did it together. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, my partner, and all of you. I'm thankful that MetaFilter exists. Cheers.
Metatalktails: Seasonal Treats
Wordshore wants to know, as temperatures drop and nights lengthen in the Northern Hemisphere, with the opposite happening in the Southern half, what treats (not just food) of the season are you most looking forward to, or enjoying now? [more inside]
Mefi Cookbook available!
I've gotten enough recipes to make this doc worth sharing. It can be found directly on Google Docs as well as through the wiki. Please let me know if any changes, additions, or corrections need to be made!
MetaSnackFilter
Let's lighten the mood. It's the end of the week and I want to hear about something fun and not about politics. Tell me about a really awesome snack/food you just ate. What you eating?
The 'Can I Eat This?' Cookbook
There have been several posts over the past few years of folks wanting to create a Mefi cookbook. In the spirit of building community I thought I would start actually collecting recipes that people had posted with the intention of sharing for the book. [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Hot-Weather Recipes
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! I'm a little slow to post this week because MY AIR CONDITIONING DIED so there was all the drama of working over a hot computer in 90 degree heat while waiting for the repair guy. ANYWAY, not that my house is cooling back off, I desperately want to know your favorite hot-weather recipes -- things that taste good in the heat, or things that you don't need to turn on the stove for, or things that just taste like summer. Go!

MeFi cookbookfilter redux
In the middle of a year-end personal accounting, I came across this MeTa post and wondered: Has there been any progress toward a community cookbook?
I am happy to contribute to, or even help organize, such an enterprise. Anyone else?
The more you know, the more you can create.
There's no end to imagination in the kitchen. Given that the cookbook thread petered out over a week ago and the caramel sugar thread is currently making me wish I was in my kitchen, describe the best thing you have ever made. In pornographic detail. If you wish to add the recipe here, those that are working on "Can I Eat This?" can start up the book.

Threads about weekly menus
I'm looking for threads on creating, purchasing for, cooking weekly menus. I know there are a ton of them on ask.mefi, but I can't seem to come up with the right terms to find them. Can anyone point me to some? I accept that I am a searchtard.

Try putting an entire plate of Beans on that Sandwich
Odd callout: Are people really uncreative that they can't figure out what to add to their grilled cheese sandwich? Its chatfilter. Its beyond chatfilter... Its asking if we can write every itteration of cheese+bread+some special ingredient down. Plus, this has been covered before. Seriously, do we need to overthink a plate of cheese, bread, and butter a second time because someone can't search?
Peanut butter and WHAT?
A while back there was a post on Metafilter, though it could have been on Ask, about the idea/theory/game where you can name any three foods, and two of the three possible pairings taste good together, but the third just doesn't work. I think there was a bit of a side argument about whether pickles tasted good on peanut butter sandwiches. I've exhausted my Google-fu. Does anyone remember this/can someone point me to it, or was I imagining it?

An empty seat at the Table.
Some of you might remember this post about Talula's Table, the restaurant in Chester County, PA, that has a one-year wait for reservations. Earlier this year, Aimee Olexy and Brian Sikora, the husband and wife team behind Talula's, filed for divorce. Philly food critic Craig LaBan has a bittersweet article about the end of their marriage, and how Aimee and the staff at Talula's are soldiering on.
