I can't log-in to MetaFilter

I can't log-in to MetaFilter. I am sure of my username and password, but they aren't working. I've tried deleting cookies. I probably haven't helped matters by obfuscating the email address in my profile so I can't have my password emailed to me. Assuming I haven't been banned, please help!

I am TOO logged in. The thread has been taken out.

When viewing a deleted thread (While logged in) I see a bit at the bottom that says "You are not currently logged in. Log in or create a new account."

I can confrim that this is happening in every thread that is currently missing off of the front page.

How are metafilter .org and .com different?

Is there some significance or explanation to the finding that metafilter.org looks like mf.com, except for the fact that I can't log in to .com and I can to .org?

Part of the reason I asked is that for two months, since joining, I have tried in vain to log in to Metafilter.org, which was what my bookmark pointed to, and I accidentally went to the .com site and had no problem. I admit I'm not always very savvy with these things.

MetaTalk for the logged in only?

This is probably an annoying pony to add, but is there any way we can get a flag added to MetaTalk posts so that they'll only be visible to a user who is logged in?

Metafilter login doesn't work for me on Firefox.

Metafilter login doesn't work for me on Firefox. Just sends me back to the homepage without logging me in. It does work on IE. Metatalk and Ask Metafilter seem fine on both browsers. I've deleted all cookies, etc, and still no luck. Can anyone suggest a solution other than "use IE" or "don't post to Metafilter"?

Logging onto MeFi via a Sidekick is currently impossible.

Logging onto MeFi via a Sidekick is currently impossible. Is there any quick fix to this? The Sidekick browser times out when trying to access the Login_action.cfm page. Matt has said this probably won't get fixed. But is there something in the coldfusion code that can be slightly tweaked to allow logging in? I know of at least a handful users that would love to be able to access their mefi account on their Sidekick.

Mefi coldfusion error

When I try to get onto mefi or any of its subsidiaries I get this coldfusion error.

This only happens in Firefox. I'm posting this with IE.

are you going to log in? huh huh huh?

I'm using Firefox on Windows XP, and I just tried to go to MeFi and then here to MeTa, and it kept pestering me to login. When did THAT happen? Or, as I'm guessing, is this a bug?

Proxy Cookies

Bug report: MeFi has suddenly started relying on IP addresses to identify users. A coworker just emailed me with a screenshot which showed that he had my session (he has no account but was identified by my username). Loading the blue just a second ago, I myself was identified as a certain milnak whom I do not know (but that person is located very close to me geographically). The unifying thread seems to be that we work for a certain large software company and thus all access MeFi through the same outgoing HTTP proxy.

And yes, I know, I should get back to work instead of reading the blue, etc, etc.

Side note: metatalk still identifies me correctly as blindcarboncopy.

no login no blue

this happened once before - the blue won't load up unless i'm logged in (both IE and Moz) grey and green are fine logged in or not. I can login via ask. or metatalk. then the blue appears.

No more NYT posts, please!

After the nth post to a new york times (nytimes.com) site that requires a subscription, which was easily circumvented via searching google news for 3 of the words in the quoted article text from the post, I'm wondering if we can do anything programmatically to solve this. Perhaps search through the posted links, and if nytimes comes up without a partner section of the link, put a small note in red on the preview screen. Or at least add this and the comments we've previously made about posting to low bandwidth sites to the posting guidelines.

Forced login - what?

I just got forced to login when loading either MetaFilter or MetaTalk, with a statement that only logged-in folks can post. What's that about?

Is MetaTalk visible to non members?

Are people who are not logged on, or who do not have accounts, allowed to see MetaTalk threads? I just sent my husband, who is a recording engineer and he got a message saying he didn't have permission to view it.

Weird DoubleFelix error.

What's DoubleFelix, and why do I get prompted to log in to it? Matteo directed us all to look at someone's posting record, but when I did, I was prompted to log in...? Did I miss a memo?

Login and return to where we started?

This is a very small and unimportant request, but maybe it would be easy to implement. When we login, could we then return to the page we logged in from rather than jump to the main index? Or perhaps get a choice of the two? I only login at work when I want to post; maybe I'm in the minority here.

Highlighting User Posts

How about highlighting the threads on the front page that the logged-in user has posted in? Going to your user info to see all your recent comments is a bit cumbersome. Something like making the "n new" in "N comments (n new)" a different color and pointing that link to your most recent comment in the thread.

They're onto us, and our random logins!

I don't know about you but it looks like the New York Times got wise to the NYT Random Login Generator which mr_crash_davis hipped us all to back in April. All of a sudden I got a log in prompt when I clicked on an article and all I'm getting now is an error message when I try to log on with it. And you?.

Be careful what you wish for

Bug: If you set your prefs to show 99 days of posts, the front page shows 99 days of posts, thereby taking forever and making the server pretty unhappy, I bet. There should be some max built in there.

Suggestion: Set login cookie domains to ".metafilter.com" (note the two periods), so logins will work at metafilter.com, www.metafilter.com, and metatalk.metafilter.com.

Login redirect back to where I logged in from pls

Often, I will be reading MeFi on a work or other computer and am not logged in. When I see a thread that I'd like to contribute to, I log in from the "Login" link on that thread...which dumps me back out on the front page. Is there any way to have the Login link on a comments page dump back to that particular page after you've logged in?

Login weirdness with Opera 6.04: After I enter username/passwrd and hit 'login' the page stalls: just a white screen. If I open up another window and load mefi I'm logged in correctly, but the original window stays blank and has to be closed. Problem doesn't happen in metatalk login.

Clicking the metatalk link on the front page gave me the metatalk banner and the message below. I was finally able to log in to metatalk via the "category list" button in the banner. No doubt this is Godzilla-related.

Cookie problem

This morning, for some reason, the MeFi "cookie" starting expecting USER_NAME instead of USER_ID as it had done for the previous months. This caused an ugly blowup in the code and lots of juicy error stuff on the screen.

I deleted my MeFi cookie (thanx Mozilla) and proceeded to log in again. Now I have both USER_ID (numeric) and USER_NAME (anser) in my cookie. If the change was because they don't trust the numeric ID not to change, then there's not much point including it at all, seems to me.

I don't want to post as my spouse

Hi! I'm MiguelCardoso's wife. My name is Maria João. I use the same computer as my husband does and have just registered under the name Schweppes Girl; using a well-known roundabout way. My username shows up fine on MetaFilter but, when I came to MetaTalk to comment, I find my username is automatically - and annoyingly - changed to MiguelCardoso.

Although I agree with what he says most of the time, I'd like, as do Catch/Holloway and the Acheson couple, to make comments of my own. Why is this? Or should I just order Miguel( ;) to take dictation?
I should add that I don't really mind; but I read MetaFilter and MetaTalk regularly and feel that women are severely under-represented. Does this mean I can be myself on MetaFilter(Schweppes Girl shows up as my login)but must bow to my husband on the perhaps more important MetaTalk? I guess it's just a bug. Am I right? Could it be fixed?

However, if i select a thread, when i enter that thread on the http://metatalk.metafilter.com/thread.cfm? page, i am still logged in. i do not believe it is a cache issue.

MetaTalk login logout bug report

More logging-into-MetaTalk pain and dismay...

I'm at a new job as of this week and so am using a new computer, and I can't log in completely (it seems) to MetaTalk... I can log in and show up as logged in on the front page of MT or on a category main page, but when I click through to a thread there's no logged-in indicator and no posting form.

Similar/related to a problem where I can't seem to log *out* of (some pages on) MetaTalk, from home.

Matt, I emailed you about the latter a month or two ago, not sure if you got it though... if you did & are aware of the problem, please disregard this bug report and just work on getting me that pony.
