February 2008 Archives (all archives)
I saw an AskMe post once about activities in LA, and one of the answers mentioned some group that does cool stuff like refurbishing wheelchairs in LA, and now I can't find it. [more inside]
An idea about favorites. [more inside]
How do we talk about religion and morals while respecting all beliefs? [more inside]
Did anyone else hear LanguageHat on PRI's The World? [more inside]
Alas poor hermitosis! We knew him, Mefites: Twas a fellow of infinite jest, of moste excellent fancy...oh, yeah, and he was a total favorites whore.
The founder explains why he allows great freedom to the members. HerfDerfGuardianReader
So we're letting this stay? It's been there a few hours - I'm just wondering if something changed with policies here. [more inside]
MeFi Fantasy Baseball 2008! We're back again for our 3rd year as a free 5x5 Roto league on Yahoo. We've got 9 managers currently, and I'm looking to get 12-14. [more inside]
MeFiTri: Are you a female MeFite planning on doing a Danskin Triathlon? Would you like to try it (you can do it!) Are there other triathletes on MeFi? I'm wondering about the potential for a training group similar to the running and cycling gangs. [more inside]
Here's a little quoting bookmarklet for Metafilter threads that I thought folks might find useful. Highlight a text snippit you'd like to quote and click the bookmarklet. It'll format the snippit as a quote and paste it into the comment box for you. [more inside]
Surely-previously-requested Favorites pony: Any reason the little plus signs on the main pages don't change to minus signs for favorited posts? [more inside]
Okay, so it looks like it's time for another Crissy Field meetup so that my puppy can attend and run circles around all of you. [more inside]
The comment count on the MeTa "Recent Comments" tab doesn't account for deleted comments. [more inside]
A different kind of call out: MeFi has a brand new pony. [more inside]
Just a quick note on what's going on with the backtagging project and some "go go go!" momentum for a final push to the finish. [more inside]
You know what? I'm travelling, I lost my pin and have no way of pulling cash. Of course I tried to use paper to discover my pin. My last resort is Ask Mefi, I'm getting some good help, and then my post gets deleted. Well, I'm deleting my account, I'm tired of this. [more inside]
So it's cool to post racist and stereotypical trolls to ask.me now? When did the rules change?
Wasn't there a new podcast in the works as recently as a few weeks back? If you're still in need of questions & commentary from semi-reliable users, that I'd like to suggest acting now. I am readily contactable in this crazy future age. There will be no difficulty tracking me down, so that to you This Moment in Time is as close as ANYONE can get to the absolute perfect combinations of words, sighs, jokes, and groans that make up the whole of a "Classic Podcast. My ASSISTANCE FOR OTHER MATTERS, whomever OF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE MINIMAL aspects AND i UNDERSTAND.
I have the good fortune to be planning a visit to Copenhagen on Sunday, March 9. Inspired by previous success, I'd love the opportunity to hang out with some local Mefites. Meetup? [more inside]
Can't get the mefi music player to work, even though I just reinstalled flash (it's flash-based, right?). It works on my laptop though, not sure why. [more inside]
Is it possible to jump to posts based on a specific date? [more inside]
We need a meetup in Canberra. [more inside]
What happened to put quotes in italics?
I would like to read books by more MeFi writers. I have therefore made a list of who they are and their books. [more inside]
I think metatalk might have a problem with repeated entries.
is there a way to search for every MeFiter who has posted to Music, but from a particular city? Seems like if the search terms are not in the post or tagged by the poster, the MeFi search engine doesn't include the user info... [more inside]
To what extent should teachers incorporate their own biases into their teaching of youngish children? To what extent does using goofy picture of people do so? [more inside]
I tried to gift a membership to a minor internet celebrity, but I got the message "It appears your friend already has an account, as this email address is in use". Really? That's cool -- now who is it? Can there be a way of entering in an address and getting a username back, so I can add that account to my contacts?
election08.metafilter.com ? [more inside]
Is it "legal" to post something to the blue that includes a link to a site I work for? [more inside]
Wellington needs a meetup. [more inside]
Another scottish meetup ? [more inside]
I'd be interested in seeing where MeFites stand on certain things without all the requisite explanations, caveats, and general schtuff that goes along with the responses to an actual post. That all said, can we have polls? [more inside]
Although I'm not going to South by Southwest, maybe the SXSW visitors and the Austin natives could have a meetup? SXSW is March 7 -16 this year.
Is there a standard way to embed bugmenot passwords in posts, because I like how Baphomet put it in the link title today and back in November. [more inside]
all-time favorite flamewars in the blue? [more inside]
Can we bump the number of posts on MeTa up to 20 or 30? Please and thanks.
Earlier today, there was a posting about geographical knowledge, with links to an online series of tests. The posting seems to have disappeared. I can't find it in the archives or through a site search. Can someone point me to the link or the site with the tests? I'm having no luck finding the one I want through Google. Thanks.
In case anyone wondered what happened with the College Admissions Official From Hell (thread here), an update! Thank you to the good people of AskMe. [more inside]
Belgrade meetup? Har.Har and I are in. How's this weekend sound?
Simple proposition, but perhaps not a simple implementation. Or perhaps loathsome to the majority. Some sort of marker (and even the ability to disable it) to show where you left a thread after returning several hours, or even days, later. When it starts rapidly closing in on, say, 200, it's not so easy to find where you last were. [more inside]
Pony request: More best answers in my activity sidebar! [more inside]
My heartfelt thanks to loving MeFites: Brandon Blatcher, hadjiboy, Grammar Moses, madamjujujive, vronsky, hortense, It's Raining Florence Henderson, rtha and Hildegarde. [more inside]
I assume this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it. So maybe not. So maybe I'll ask: For those of us who might like to get the cream of the comments without spending so much time digging through them -- such as on posts with hundreds of 'em -- could we have a "view only favorited comments" button or something? [more inside]
Why do we not want most popular comments from all time available, the way it is for posts? [more inside]
When clicking on Older Posts when in an AskMeFi tags page I get records 6-55 of 55 rather than 51 - 55 as the heading suggests.
User activity search is available on profile pages. [more inside]
Inspired by this AskMeFi, it might be a good idea that we mail each other some hometown-inspired packages of our own. yes/no?
Well, I have been onsite five or ten minutes and already flagged two posts...can I say I am sick and tired of seeing gratuitous and profane rants against God and Christianity in general-especially since I know for a fact that kind of speech is not tolerated for other groups here? [more inside]
If you were showing the MetaFilter Universe (including the main page, Ask, Talk, Projects, Music, everything) to someone for the first time, what threads would you choose as examples of MeFi at its best and at its worst?
I saw the best minds of mefi generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, clicking themselves through the blue pages at dawn looking for an angry fix....
I think it's deleting this link twice shows that Metafilter mods don't have a sense of humour about themselves.
note: Ask MetaFilter is as useful as you make it. Please limit comments to answers or help in finding an answer. Wisecracks don't help people find answers. Thanks.
Also, I think that the definition of "noise" needs to be extended to encompass posts that are just people giving their opinions without providing anything new to the discussion. posted by 1 at 2:08 PM on February 12 [more inside]
How about a Craigslist-type subsite for MeFi members? [more inside]
Oh please please can I have a pony and can he be a clone of the FAVORITES Pony, only this time we call him REMEMBER THIS and he's just for MEEEEEEE? [more inside]
Do overwritten Comment Previews exist beyond the Post refresh? [more inside]
In a large and steadily-growing community, and possibly because I'm getting old and stuff, I find myself having trouble sometimes remembering who said what, especially when it's a newer user. So, a possibly small and easy-to-implement feature request. [more inside]
The Metafilter Short Fiction Anthology: P/Virse Edition deadline is approaching! There's just over two weeks remaining, so if you have yet to start clacking away, now is the time! I'm sure I'm not the only one eager to see what folks have come up with! [more inside]
What exactly happens when you flag a post? I know what the general response is, but how does it alert management? Does the post get highlighted, like what us plebes see when something on ask.mefi gets tagged "correct answer"?
What happened to koeselitz? Come back! I always appreciate your intelligent, thoughtful, learned comments. [more inside]
So I see on the meet up side bar that there are two meet ups on the 29th, and there were three on the 9th. [more inside]
I need help finding an old askme about hanging out with one's S.O.... [more inside]
I'm starting to think that this thread on the Detroit monorail is weird joke/hoax, and it best is just a poor FPP since it's mostly just a collection of wikipedia links with no actually recent news stories or government/corporate press releases. Can it please go away before the Detroiters get home from work and go into a tizzy?
So I was poking around MeFi's recent photo list instead of working and I stumbled across dhammond's for today. I didn't figure it was quite worthy of a fpp, but thought some other MeFites might get a chuckle out of the pics he posted. [more inside]
New search is not my favorite [more inside]
I'm looking for a post I read here — at least I think I did — concerning the natural evolution of online communities. The conclusion talked about population growth leading to divisive groups that clash with each other leading to the decline of the community... or something along those lines. [more inside]
So I missed the deadline to call in my question. That would have been fun, but life has been crushing, it happens. Since I can not wait until the next time - Matt, Jess, Cortex, JB, others?: we have MeFi Music, which is really so much fun, but so many MeFites have other talents. Can we expand MeFi Music, or add another category, to include other arts? I would really love to see short stories, poems, paintings, photos, etc. [more inside]
"Chatfilter" is not one of the reasons included in the drop-down flagging menu on ask.me and I think it should be.
Listing posts by a specific user with a specific tag fails for some older posts, probably because they've been retrospectively tagged. [more inside]
Don't forget that until 10 PM today, Tuesday February 12, you can get a free short stack of IHOP pancakes. It's National Pancake Day!
Can we work harder at having mature and respectful discussions? Do we need to do so? [more inside]
Apologies if this has been asked.... I sometimes see new AskMe postings appear that I *know* I've seen before. [more inside]
Pointless And Maybe Drunken Pony Request: Can you please change the boxes in the contact section which allows us to describe our relationship to the contact so they say whatever term we choose, like the gender one does? [more inside]
I apologise if this has been covered before, but is there a way to search within a given users comments? I want to find a link I posted ages ago, but my search terms are way too general for a regular MeFi search.
What's the company line on excerpting stuff from MeFi on other websites? [more inside]
Any way we can get an input box on the 'add as contact' page so that we can enter something that only we can see (on our own profile page) as to why we're adding someone as a contact? I find the provided options useless and I'd like to leave myself a note as to why I've added someone. Often, I'd even like to "link" them to a specific comment/post.
My user profile page shows I have one favourite, yet when I click to see what it is, I see a page that tells me I have no favourites (which is correct, as I don't use that feature). What's the dealio? Anyone else seeing an incorrect count on their profile page?
Shamelessly self-promote your best lesser-known work...to me? [more inside]
WTF? How come you quit opening all MeFi links in a new page? And what are those goddam photos on the right side all about? Jeezus! I just figure out these damn digital parking meters and somebody comes up with something new.
I'd like to make a semi-newsworthy FPP, but worry it might be a tricky subject. [more inside]
So, is there any reason why the tag view (example) has no comment count?
hermitosis, you are an attention whore. [more inside]
It's podcast call-in time again. Leave your messages and questions at +1 (503) 487-0014. We'll be recording the show on Wednesday. [more inside]

Hail San Franciscans. I will be landing on your shores bringing you a message of goodwill from the Rhine delta people. Let's engage in the ancient ritual of raising glasses of beer to signal the friendly relations between our nations. Or to put it differently: I'll be in SF soon and I'd like to buy you a beer. And I'm sure you have plenty to catch up with each other too. [more inside]
Telling anonymous to wait to test when they have specifically requested pre-birth paternity testing methods does not "help in finding an answer". [more inside]
Time for another Tokyo meetup? [more inside]
This just in: Metafilter endorses Obama. [more inside]
Yes, my job does suck. How can I get you to stop reminding me of that unpleasant fact?
MetaFilter: over 2,000,000 served. [more inside]
One-link, one-or-two-word MeFi posts bugging you? We've had a few lately. Maybe it would help to display the tags on the front page. [more inside]
Not sure why, but my first post was deleted. It was about the News Corp discussions with Microsoft. Definitely not spam, so I'm not sure what happened.
Anyone up for a Dallas meetup on February 16th at Texas Caribbean Food? (google map). Afterwards, if anyone that attends is interested, MeFite item is DJing at Night of the Loving Dead at Absinthe Lounge, right next door to TxCbbnFd. [more inside]
