Gorgik would like to know, what are your personal associations with music. What are some songs that are personally meaningful to you, and if you feel like sharing, what are those associations/what’s meaningful about them. Is it a person(s)? An event? A place? A time in your life? Or just what have you been listening to right now? Links welcome. [more inside]
Life can be difficult, time are tough; it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. That being said, I'm curious about what you are reading, watching, listening, and playing to get through these turbulent times. I'm also interested in knowing if your consumption of media has changed over the last couple of months. Are you seeking out things that are light and easy to consume? Or maybe you seek comfort in something heavier and darker. Or maybe you've withdrawn from screens altogether and are finding pleasure in a more analog and tactile space. Share with the community if you feel up to it. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
The first version of the digital-only music swap 2020 is up for comments / testing. [more inside]
Do you have an instrument at home? Or a voice? And a camera or a microphone? Willing to upload to Youtube or Facebook or Vimeo or Soundcloud or your provider of choice and link to it here? Better to be at home sharing music than to be at home not sharing music!
Good Saturday ... some time, MetaFilter! This week, share some of your favorite movies, shows, books, and music for when you need something soothing to enjoy! So we can all have many more options for sinking into a cloud of escapist comfort! [more inside]
What are the best live music events you've seen during your lifetime, and why? [more inside]
Is there any place on FanFare for albums or music discussions? [more inside]
Looking for a FPP that I think was from NPR. It was a series of articles where the writer paired a brunch recipe with an album. I've tried searching on here to no avail. Halp?
As the end of another [insert your applicable adjective here] week grows nigh, let’s talk about having music on the brain. Is there always a soundtrack playing in your noggin? Or is everything quiet and that’s a bizarre question? On what occasions has your brain cued up a song with lyrics that fit the situation perfectly, or offered insights, comfort or humor that you needed? Ever find yourself thinking of a tune that would be utterly inappropriate in that moment should you accidentally start singing it? Can you “play” entire albums or symphonies in your head? Can you imagine familiar music differently, perhaps switching up the instrumentation, the meter or even the genre? Do you make up new lyrics to songs as a way to amuse yourself and others or remember things? And no conversation about music on the brain would be complete without a discussion of earworms… when does it happens to you, and do you have a trick for getting rid of them? Chime in! [more inside]
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, gryphonlover wants to know your favorite concert! Ones you watched, ones you performed, ones you heard about from your dad; rock, jazz, classical, anything! Let's hear about the live music you love. [more inside]
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about your favorite musical(s). Broadway, Off-Broadway, live-action adaptation, film adaptations of stage musicals, etc. Who are your favorite singers/performers/entertainers? Do you have any specific songs that you like to put on repeat? Have you memorized the soundtrack? Do you sing them in your car or shower? Let's talk about a few of our favorite things. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.
What's that old song you just heard and now like so much? You've discovered (or re-discovered) it, now play this tune whenever you can; can't get it out of your head? [more inside]
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about some "thing" that you've experienced over and over and over again. Maybe it's a book you keep re-reading, or a movie you've seen 100+ times, or a video game you play constantly, or an album or song you have on repeat. What piece of media are you constantly re-enaging with? Some thing that feels like the back of your hand, that you are familiar and comfortable with, that you know all the way through. Some thing you keep on coming back to because you just love it so much. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
It’s time for the very first all-digital MetaFilter Music Mixtape Swap! Signups are open from now until April 14. Then it’s time to make a mix of your favourite tracks, create a cover, upload it to the internet and get five awesome mixes from fellow MeFites. [more inside]
I was looking at the wiki and I noticed that the last mixtape swap was in 2014. I think it could be fun to have another one, maybe through making playlists on a streaming music service like Spotify. I have never run a swap before though. [more inside]
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about music. What are you listening to? How do you listen? On your phone on the bus? In the car on your way to work? At home with some high-end audio equipment? Are you strictly listening digital? Analog? Do you stream your music? Do you only listen to records? Are you a collector? Is there a certain genre you hate or avoid? Do you pirate your music or pay for it legally? Is there a single or an album that you've been listening to on repeat? Is there something you're looking forward to being released later this year? Let's turn the volume up. Stay safe and be kind to each other.
AFIK, this band has never had a FPP. And at the same time pretty much everyone here (ok, maybe 10%) would love the hell out of them. And yet there is no recent "news" to hook an FPP on. So, as someone who has suddenly found this question, um, urgent... How do I make this (first! FPP worthy? Or is that not a thing? [more inside]
Until midnight tonight Pacific time, bandcamp is donating their share of all purchases to the Voting Rights Project. Everyone I know is using this as an excuse to buy all those albums that were on their wishlist, and to recommend all their favorite bandcamp music for everyone else to buy. Can we do that here? I wish I'd thought of this earlier, but there's still almost seven hours left in the sale...
Given all the great AskMefi questions about playlist suggestions, would there be an interest in an official Metafilter Spotify account with playlists made based on each question? [more inside]
In the spirit of drawing attention to all the great stuff on this site, I thought I'd remind people of the amazingly talented people who hang out on MeFi Music. (Yes it's a place!) I thought that it might be an idea for people to link to playlists they're created or songs they've favourited, and we can have a whole thread of all the great tunes people have created and shared FREE OF CHARGE ARE YOU KIDDING ME with all of us. Never been to MeFi Music? Never created a playlist? Now's your chance! Let us celebrate the coolest of all subsites - here's to The Black. [more inside]
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I want to know what you've been reading, watching, listening to, or otherwise enjoying and want to recommend to everyone else who's looking for something new to enjoy! [more inside]
I'm trying to find an old music post (not within the past year, but not more than a few years old) featuring a Youtube video of a solo female singer playing a sort of folky song on an acoustic guitar on her porch. Modern (not some old forgotten artist). For some reason I think she was in Texas. I think she had short hair. I think it was an original song. Other than I that I'm drawing blanks...
Can we have a 'Delete' button for posts on Music? More so than other subsites, it seems that we might want, and reasonably be allowed, to manage what works we keep available there. [more inside]
I'm looking for a music post from the Blue that appeared about a month ago. It was about an elementary school class in California who had written a song that Warner Brothers eventually released as a single (with an industrial film by Francis Ford Coppola). I've searched for this but haven't found anything--does anyone remember this?
Did someone say Great Music? MeFiMusic Avengers assemble, in the latest MeFiMusic Podcast, available now on Soundcloud! [more inside]
- Go to music.metafilter.com
- Check sidebars
- One will list "Most Favorited Tracks from your contacts"
- Some of these songs won't be Jingle Rock Bell (but luckily some will)
- Punch 'Em In The Dick!
- (Er, by which I mean "please comment, favourite or just enjoy listening to the best of MeFi Music")
- Cheers MetaFilter!
While bemoaning the fact that there's not an Amazon playlist or station that scratches my itch for eclectic music, it dawned on me that Mefi Music hits that particular sweet spot for me. Which led me to wonder about the feasibility of integrating Alexa with Mefi music. It seems it's been done for iPhone using the RSS feed, so I'm assuming doing something for Alexa is not totally out of the question. I'm curious as to what people think of the idea in general, and also any thoughts on technical implementation. [more inside]
Following hot on the heels of The MetaFilter Podcast, I give you its scruffy, grumpy, band t-shirt wearing younger sibling, The MeFiMusic Podcast (episode 4), available now on Soundcloud! [more inside]
Inspired by this post on the blue about Barack Obama's summer reading list, I thought it would be interesting if mefites posted lists of what they plan to or have read, listened to, or watched this summer. I don't want to leave out people in the Southern Hemisphere, though, so feel free to post seasonal lists for whatever the season you may be experiencing!
MeFiMusic Podcast 3 is ready, featuring some July By Women challenge songs! Check it out on Soundcloud. [more inside]
The new Avalanches album is live-streaming, but the thread has closed. While a new post would be reasonable, I’m feeling spurred to ask: any chance of getting albums added to fanfare someday? musicbrainz and discogs would both be candidate sites for metadata.
Bassist extraordinaire, author/translator, lover of France, China, Oz, literature and cinema (with a PhD to boot), beloved father, husband, friend, and "big cat of cat family" (to a fluffy black cat), Wolof has passed away. [more inside]
Because I'm tired of having this come up in EVERY SINGLE politics thread: If you were a professional wrestler, what would be your entrance music be? More granularly: what would it be if you were A) a Face, and B) a Heel? Which would you prefer to be? Which do you think you'd be more likely to be? Let's hash this out right now.
Back by moderately popular demand, it's the MetaFilterMusic podcast! Check out episode 2 on Soundcloud! [more inside]
There's been a lot of music I've only learned about because of Front Page Posts to the blue, so I would like to suggest a little Mefi Music Challenge! Please record a cover of a song that you only know about because it was in a post on metafilter. [more inside]
Following a recent MeTa on which interest was expressed in the idea of a MetaFilter Music Podcast, I decided that hell yes and made one - check it out on Soundcloud! [more inside]
So, I tried to share the MetaFilter Radio app with someone recently and found it was no longer in the App store. And I tried to run my MetaFilter Radio app and it was an utter failure. Are there plans to update this and continue to make it useful and fun, or was it a one-off project and is now dead?
I would love the ability to post extraordinary metafilter music to the front page in the same way that we can post projects to the front page! What do people think? [more inside]
This recent AskMe, the sad demise of This Is My Jam, and some recent music posts on the Blue have got me thinking. How feasible is it to set up some kind of venue for members to share music playlists independent of the Mefi Swap? I'm thinking Spotify playlists in particular, and wondering if there's any scope for adding this as an additional feature to Mefi Music. [more inside]
The article I'm trying to recall was a very well written reflection on what the purpose of criticism is. I think the author was mainly concerned about music criticism. There was a central thread through out the story of a particular album (from the late 60s or 70s) that a friend of the author interpreted as being a nihilistic tribute to love. It was moving and I wish I had bookmarked it.
Sad news: long-time Metafilter community member edgeways, Edgewood Smith, passed away last week. [more inside]
If you buy music on Bandcamp and have made your fan page public, what is it? (Mine is Mister Meows, but lives at runciblejones because such things can't be changed.) The MetaFilter CD swaps have demonstrated that many MeFites are into music that's up my ally, and it'd be cool to see what folks are grooving to on a more regular basis.
I could not find anything specific concerning this in the FAQ. However, since field recordings of nature/city soundscapes may not meet the traditional definition of a "music composition", I wanted to get some clarification. [more inside]
Music-lovers of Metafilter, we would like to extend an invitation to you all to join us over at MeFiMusic for the latest challenge: record a song about a city. [more inside]
We have a one-stop button for posting MeFi Projects to Metafilter. Could we also get a one-stop button for posting MeFi Music to Metafilter?
Over the last year or so, I have absolutely loved every spotify album made by mefis. It is always a high quality compilation. [more inside]
I was listening to a piece of music on MeFi Music and posted a comment. It was great that it asked me first if I really wanted to leave the page, but it occurs to me that you could also set it up so that the comment is posted by Ajax instead so you never leave the page. Last time we had this brought up was Nov 2012 and in the context of long threads rather than threads where posting actively interrupts a listening experience. [more inside]

Just a brief heads-up to get more attention: Over at MeFi Music I've launched a project to cover They Might Be Giants' Flood in its entirety to celebrate the album's upcoming 25th anniversary. Three tracks are already spoken for, so hop on over if you want to get in on this! (Thanks to taz for approving this MetaTalk thread.)
