More and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that
The pancakes are getting incredibly stale, people.
Metafilter used to be an addiction for me, but lately with more and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that, can we really say we are the best of the Web anymore? Final straw was the posting of that Bush daughter photo.
Is this really what we want this place to be?

Too stupid for askme?
How do you decide if you askmefi question is too stupid? [more inside]
Threadratings for Metafilter?
With all the huff and puff about quality, how about a facility in the blue for viewers of threads to rate them? This would have the benefits of indicating examples of quality (to newbies, oldbies with bad memories, etc..) and perhaps the possibility of searching for only threads rated over 7.0 or something. Whaddayasay?
Awesome thread.
Great thread, people. Keep it coming.
a place for intellectual inbreeding?
Is Metafilter, as a community, in the process of degenerating from a gathering of the web's most interesting minds to a place for intellectual inbreeding? [more]
Posts with no context at all.
Quick and lazy newsfilter posts.
I think it should be deleted. Am I wrong?
One of the worst posts I've seen in a long time. No focus or point of discussion, just a jumble of links. I think it should be deleted. Am I wrong?
pppppplllllllease i know it sucks but...!
Three-paragraph post plus pre-emptive plea from author for forgiveness equals a thread filled with crap.
Link redux: MeFi gets too common-linky?
Without getting specific, I regularly see links on metafilter these days to items which not only have previously been posted to every site on the intarweb and my grandmothers mailing list, but which have usually appeared on my television set some twelve to twenty four hours before they show up here. I fully realise that the intentions of the participants re-shape the intentions of communities over time, and that if I don't like it here I'm free to leave.
However, I first got interested in this site because it was the best filter on the web, not the wittiest discussion forum, so I'll poke my head over the parapet one more time to ask the question: what is the purpose of this site any more as opposed to, say, blogdex? Do we still fulfill a useful function, or as Matt obliquely eludes elsewhere, are human filters wearing the orange safety reflectors of the web these days, compared to the robots? And if not, how can we raise the bar?

What can we do to encourage people to pad out their NewsFilter posts?
What can we do to encourage people to pad out their NewsFilter posts? Yes it is an interesting piece of news, and yes I am sure some interesting comments may follow but surely some extra links to relevant elements of the story is not too difficult? C'mon folks, off your fat asses.
It's not asshat, it's felchwit
That know-nothing neo-jazz-fusion asshat Pretty_Generic made a shitty first post, thereby crudding up a pristine, postless front page.
a really, really, good day for Metafilter
sub quality journalistic demagogues
So, Newsmax before Newsweek? I tend to find Newsmax, CommonDreams, YellowTimes, BushWatch all sub quality journalistic demagogues. A question of policy.
How could I have made my post better?
I realize that the 'ethnic cleansing' was inappropriate as it was. I'm wondering though if anyone who saw it for the five minutes or so it was up could give any suggestions as to how to post it differently, other than a disclaimer on the front page rather than inside. Or was it inappropriate altogether, warning or not? (Yes, I've read posting guidelines.)
I want to break a rule here and propose a shoutout
I want to break a rule here and propose a shoutout - a cheerleader post, if you will indulge me. I note a immense upward jump in the quality of both MeFi and MeTa posts and comments, with a corresponding downward jump in noise, trolling and trash. I note comments by Matt have a more relaxed tone than in the past few weeks. I see discussions kept to a mostly civil if not downright respectful tone. I observe efforts running the gamut from herculean to humorous by members like frykitty, y6y6y6, waxy, riffola, adrianhon, et al, to help make this wondrous place ever more enjoyable and user friendly. I want to say thank you, to everyone. [*Cue Dorothy, who taps heels of ruby slippers 3 times, chants "There's no place like Metafilter, there's no place like Metafilter, there's no place like Metafilter...*]
Can I post links that I found on Fark first?
I visit several sites and it is interesting to note where a story appears first. More than once I've seen an article on Fark a day or two before it shows up here. I'm not complaining, I know not everyone reads Fark, but is there any sort of policy on this? I mean, I've considered posting articles found on Fark but never have simply because there are 50k Fark members, so anything there will show up on many Blogs, and is thus not likely to be new to a majority of MeFians. Am I wrong? I will only post a on the front page if I can find something that I think will be interesting and new. However that may be an impossible task. Yet it can be done.
This is what MetaFilter should be like.
a truly outstanding thread. reminiscent of whatever 'metafilter golden age' era for which you pine. nearly all the discussion posts were well thought out, offered interesting perspectives gained through personal experience or outside reading; and many viewpoints were supported by unique and interesting off-site links. whether or not this topic grabbed your interest, this is the type of discussion we should always be striving towards. what can we do to encourage such behavior?
recent posts not best of web
I declare jihad.
I declare jihad. There have been 'imminent demise of Metafilter' threads posted with clockwork regularity since about two weeks after Matt started the site, I think, and this is not one of them. But the lengthy MeFi essay I blurted out on my weblog recently has got me riled up, and I think it's time for me, at least to declare myself. [Please join me inside, won't you?]
Chatfilter posts are bad posts.
Snark will be the end of MeFi
It's not the petty insults, it's the rank, disrespectful and pretentious sarcasm that's ruining discussions on MeFi. This thread is only the latest example. As discussions go, its useless. The topic, however, merits a reasoned dialogue. I could cite a few examples in which I've crossed the line. I feel comfortable that I've held my worst instincts in check most often; others have not.
It gets worse all the time. It's now customary among the hawkish set to lead off every comment with a sarcastic jibe, instead of an honest reaction. > >

Good link and good discussion
Good link vs good discussion: Which is more important? And why is it so difficult to find both in a FPP lately?
Enough with the pornolizer!

Can't we do any better?
A troubling thread. Insulting in tone, shallow in content, this thread is an extreme example of a type of behavior that seems to be growing here. More inside.
screening big sites from FPP
What if the URL field on the MetaFilter Post a Link page were screened so it would be impossible or at least difficult to link to the home page of CNN, The Onion, etc.? People could see a message reiterating the guidelines to post to something specific, and it would keep them from annoying people who are annoyed by these kinds of links.
Was today just one big puke-a-rama?

I'm sorry, this is not a tourist site.
Good Morning. Two front page posts, both "Best of City" sites. One with an ulitmatum. The other saying that Oklahoma City needs a front page post just as much as New York.
No backsies
Can we just call a "do-over"or something today?
Nothing's worthy of the front page anymore.
NOT THE FRONT PAGE!!! How come there's never anything worthy of Metafilter's FRONT page anymore? Clipart links, VH1 and Sports Illustrated stories... Rabbits with stuff on their heads!!! It offends me that I must be subject to these unworthy posts!! All of it should be moved to the SECOND PAGE, and leave the front for the REALLY Good stuff.
So - who wants to form the Star Chamber, stop all this 'not worthy of the FRONT PAGE!!!' whining, and replace it with the benevolent dictatorship so many pine for? Or maybe someone would like to put up a link to the SECOND page of Metafilter, where all of the lesser beings can put their contributions..?

Post quality improving.
Am I the only one (and I am a longtime reader, albeit not poster - almost 2 years) who thinks the quality here has gotten BETTER? I've gotten so used to the complaints in MetaTalk about posting that recent content (with some exceptions) has been a nice surprise.
The demise of Mefi
Metafilter is making me sad. (more)
July 19 was goshdarnitall a GOOD day
Now introducing : a 'Metafilter is getting better thread'! Is it just me and my interests-tunnelvision, or were the posts on July 19 just goshdarnitall more high-quality than has been the case sometimes of late? A little heavy on the flash and alcohol (two great tastes that go great together), but nary a single post of the 'Big Brother/Survivor' variety to be seen!
MetaFilter quality declines while stupidity is on the rise
Point CounterPoint - When I first came here, there was some serious discourse on topics. In the last year, this has simply decended into stupid banter (right-vs-left, SUV-vs-environment).
OK, the arguments are fine. However, the nature of the arguer has changed here on MeFi. No longer do we have people with a view. Now we get the reply post that goes after the poster and not the idea.
OK, I am tired. Been a long day and I can't really articulate this fully. In a short sentence: Mefi, despite the intelligence of its users, is looking pretty damn stupid these days.
Argue the point, not the person (or ideolgy)
(drawing concentric circles on my chest)
[Ok, I have only recently registered with MeFi. However, I have been online since the mid 80s, so cut me a little slack.]

There should be an automatic ban on anyone using the phrase "lol"
Fuck, I can't even post a decent link without morons taking over.
When is something "worth" posting?
I am wary of posting things from the new york times. I guess since many of the things in the times are discussion-worthy, it has to have some personal significance or other spin to be worth a link. also, it needs to be from the last week, even if it hasn't been posted before. that's my impression right now. any comments?
also what about posting this ted rall cartoon? it isn't the type of thing that would garner dozens of comments, i don't think. so i guess i can think about it logically and decide whether it's worth posting. at the same time, i would like to spark talk about ted rall's stuff. my personal website isn't really set up for that sort of thing and doesn't get enough visitors to get an actual discussion going. so what do i do?

MeFi Posting Frequency
The posting debate has been thrown open. I've posted my response as a comment here, and would love to here other's comments about how frequently people should be posting and what constitutes quality.

Does a link being posted elsewhere really mean it's bad for MetaFilter?
Memepool is nothing like Slashdot. I don't read memepool. I am glad that I did not miss this post because of my surfing habits. MetaFilter can't make my experience better by expecting me to read another web site, can it?
we should limit posts!
I'm pretty new around here, and for the most part, I think metafilter is great, but the signal to noise ratio is lower than it might be. I have an idea...
Lots of comments, lots of links, lots of love
Hey is it just me or has MeFi been especially good lately? Lots of comments, lots of links, lots of love... or maybe I'm just drunk...
new tagline for Metafilter
I just thought we should have an open thread on Jason Krannke's new tagline for Metafilter: "your source for political news, stories stolen from Slashdot, weblogger gossip, and links to major news stories that everyone already knows about".
So? If MeFi can save me the trouble of visiting Slashdot, Drudge and CNN.com (plus providing comments on the various topics I can steal to sound smarter in RW conversations), I think it provides a very important service. Maybe not the service mathowie originally intended...
