Better search, fewer doubles
I improved the search "previously found" feedback. Here is what you see if you search for something that was posted less than 5 times in the database, and here is what you see if you post a URL that is in there more than that. Hopefully this will cut down on double-posts.
Search users function?
How useful would a "Search Users" function be? You could search for a particular username, or location, or whatever. There have been times where I wondered how many people were from a particular city (or at least owned up to it in their user profile). How difficult and/or useful would something like this be?
(BTW, Matt, the copyright at the bottom of MeTa still says 2000.)

Doublepost prevention limited by search keywords
the plague of double-posts should be preventable through a reasonable search of the site, yes? i mean, if you can find the topic you are about to post, then you would realize there was no need.
but the search is limited by our own keywording. i have spent about half an hour trying to track down the URL of this link i saw a few weeks ago. anyone else remember the spooky (yet hilarious) flash-powered site with the old photograph of the little kid singing "american pie" and "black dog?"
so if i can't find a link that i remember from mefi, how is someone else going to find a link they don't know?

Search Timeouts
It seems that both myself and Qubit are wondering about the search timing out. I did a MeFi Google search to see if anyone had recently linked e-sheep, and it looked safe. Little did I know. As per Qubit, why does the Metafilter specific search engine time out consistently, letting dumbasses like myself double post?
Exporting older posts to another DB?
Would exporting a set of older posts out to another DB help the search engine? I find that the search engine is timing out a lot, and the google cache isn't always current enough to help prevent double posts. Plus, the old posts quite often lead to 404 pages.
More Granular Searching
A lot of times when I do a search here, I'm generally looking for a specific thread, not a specific comment. I'd like to be able so specify if I want to search only threads, only comments, or both. I imagine that this would help reduce the server load as well as making is a little easier to narrow down your results.
Places to check before posting
Not sure if something's been covered by the media? Don't want to look silly by writing, "Why isn't anyone reporting this?" when it's in every newspaper but the ones you're reading? Are you finding that the AP wire doesn't have enough information to satisfy you anymore? Here's where to look.
Searching Before Posting
Haven't been here long, but I've noticed double posts occur on nearly every thread, usually followed by a "shit ... I double posted" post %}
How difficult would it be to add a quick search through the previous posts in a thread such that if the same post had already been made it wouldn't post it again?
Or would that just crunch the overtaxed server too much?

search metafilter from the header of metatalk?
search metafilter from the header of metatalk? just for convenience when posting an example.
Search Timeouts
The search facility is basically dead on its feet: I get timeouts 9 times out of 10. Understandable, given the size of the DB, but might it be worth outsourcing (ie, a Googlified site:www.metafilter.com link)?
What are people searching for on MetaFilter?
Since we get to see the search queries that bring people to MeFi, would it also be possible to track and post which search queries are the most popular within MeFi? The results may not be that interesting, but some of us would probably get a kick out of it.
Bug in the search results.
Is it just me, or are the "Go to the detail view for this result" links on search results not scrolling to the anchor points?
I'd love an advanced search.
I'd love an advanced search. Parameters in addition to content would be:
* Username
* Date range
* Boolean or "Google like" (see below) search
The biggest bang for the buck in my opinion is the content plus usernames... There are a ton of useful applications of this search.
Note: "Google-like" refers to that quality of always being able to find what you're looking for. Okay, only kidding. Actually I'm thinking of quoted phrases & exclusions.

Search Comments by User?
Comment Search. A friend of mine just started reading metafilter and she wanted to read where I've made comments in the past. (Not sure why, but..) Is it possible to search for comments made by other people and I just don't realize? Is it unwise due to bandwidth considerations? Just curious.
Finding a specific post by post number without knowing thread?
Is there a way to find a specific post by post number without knowing which thread it's in? (Other than binary searching by hand through all of MeFi?)
Searching and Bandwidth
Regarding the bandwidth concerns: Which uses less bandwidth?
—The occasional double post? And the obligatory flames? And the use of the search function to justify thse flames?
—Or using the search function prior to posting at all?
Please check.

Is there a French version of MeFi?
Does anybody know of any French Web logs? Not Metafiltre--there's only one!
Ooo, thanks for Search Metatalk.

More specific searching?
Matt, I've been using the search function lately to try to dig up older threads, but now that MetaFilter's been getting bigger with more threads posted each day, it's making searching for the relevant posting quite hard to do. I was thinking maybe you could have a drop-down menu where you could choose to search "only postings" or "only comments" or "both postings and comments".. and if it's not too much work, maybe provide a way to search between certain dates to narrow the search criteria down. Keep up the good work!
"My comments" year not included
If I use the 'My Comments' option on the front page, it has started showing my comments posted this time last year, I guess there's no year included in the search.
Search by username
While I'm at it, I'd love to see a users page that would include the list from the members link on the 'powered by' bar, the 'search by user name' think Matt put together recently, and also a seach by username. What other ideas can y'all add.
Could preview also search for references to the same link?
I know this will start a paradox of "I saw this before," but I think that it would be neat to have the preview option also do a search of the site to see if the link is referenced elsewhere. Now the question is, was this feature request made before?
Metatalk search feature and bad tag closure requests.
1. A search feature for MetaTalk ... I’m too lazy to see if any of my requests have been posted before.
2. When I’m on the feature requests page & click on Post a new thread, it would be cool if the default category was feature requests. I almost posted this to bugs, actually. I don’t mean because I thought it was a bug ... I mean I almost posted my requests to the bugs section because it’s the default category.
3. Something that automatically closes italic and bold tags (or links, &c.) for forgetful authors. It could get rid of things like http://http:// at the beginning of a link. I don’t know if this has ever been a problem. You could issue the author a warning if he tries posting a malformed link; e.g., http:// all by itself or something.

dates on search results pony
Here's an easy win: dates on search results.
More posts requires better search engine
Since the number of postings is growing by leaps and bounds, it would be nice to see a better search engine...(more inside)
Search feature to sort links/comments by username?
Is it possible to add a search feature that would allow someone to sort links/comments made by username?
Can we search for links?
We can search for specific text, but is it possible to expand the search capability to include sites linked to? (Search for any links to www.whatadeal.org/foo/ for example.) This would help in determining if something is a repeated link or not.
"The URL you are about to post was found in 1 other post(s)." (2000)
I'd like it if, when you're previewing a topic you're about to post, metafilter says something like:
The URL you are about to post was found in 1 other post(s).
lorem ipsum sit amet..
Go to the detail view for this result
please check the thread(s) above to make sure you're not duplicating a previous post.
