Metatalktail Hour: What The Deuce Is This?! edition
Happy weekend, friends. For this week's MetaTalktail Hour, I'd like to know what the deuce the ghost in the (search) machine is surprising you with today. Earlier I started typing "the" into the address line of Duck Duck Go, and this happened ... [more inside]
Let's play a MetaFilter search game
The rules are simple:
1. Think of something—a notable person, tech product, cultural phenomenon, et cetera—that has attained fame, achieved prominence within the zeitgeist, and/or become a normal, everyday part of our lives at some point over the course of the past 20 some-odd years.
2. Plug your word or phrase into an All Sites search (sorted by date) and scroll down to find the earliest on-site mention of that concept—via comment or post.
3. Post any interesting results to this thread. [more inside]

Seeking a Metafilter thread on finding old friends
Hello, there's a thread somewhere in the Ask section (possibly the blue) that entails methods for finding old friends. [more inside]
Post tags and deadnames
I posted Daniel Mallory Ortberg’s latest instalment of his ongoing serial fic. When tagging the post, I was conflicted about tagging it with his deadname (which is “Mallory Ortberg”. Two questions:
1) on a technical level, will tagging with his full name link up with older posts tagged with his deadname, since the latter is included in the former? He’s the same author, and that continuity of work seems valuable.
2) on a trans-etiquette level, is this shitty and equivalent to deadnaming? (I’m more interested in hearing what trans folks have to say on this one.)
I ended up tagging the post with his name and his deadname but I’m questioning that.
Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.
I'd always thought MeFi site searches were pretty much comprehensive, but last night I came across several search terms that were clearly missing content. Has anyone else noticed this behavior in the past, or could this be a new bug? [more inside]
Looking for an image linked in a comment on the blue
Several years ago someone posted a link on the blue of a table that took prolife arguments and explained how to was or wasn't consistent with simply punishing women for daring to have sex. It covered abortion, birth control, and the hpv vaccine. [more inside]
Timestamps for search (pony?)
Unless I'm missing something, there is currently no way to see how old a search result is on the site other than clicking on the post in question to see when it was made. Are search results ordered in chronological order, or relevancy? [more inside]
A tag-searhc Pony
Sometimes people misspell their tags on posts. An example: this old post of mine which I tagged with bobbygentry instead of bobbiegentry. (I’ve since fixed this.) Right now, when you search by tag you get back a list of matching tags and tags that contain your search as a substring. I think it would be helpful if we also returned a list of results that have similar spellings in case the post you’re trying to find has a tag typo.
"Things People Do Differently" -- I can't find it!
Somewhere on Metafilter, there was a massive compilation of all the "I do X and my friend does Y, which one of us is correct?" posts, like about which way toilet paper rolls go, and sock-sock-shoe-shoe or sock-shoe-sock-shoe, or wiping while standing vs sitting. My search skills are failing me. Where on earth was this?
Known issue: logged-out search not working right now
Quick heads up since a number of folks have noted/asked about this: yes, the search function for logged-out readers is currently not working. It throws up a complaint that is unhelpful but also not dangerous: "Unauthorized access to internal API. Please refer to...". We'll have it fixed soon, but just a heads up that (a) it is indeed a thing and (b) it's not something to worry about. Sorry about the annoyance!
Themed Metafilter Posts
Inspired by Fizz's recent run of excellent gaming-related posts and Wordshore's similarly awesome food posts, I'm looking for further examples of mefites posting series of front page posts with a common theme. [more inside]
ISO short story in recipe blog format
Some time ago a story in recipe blog format where some kind of natural disaster/apocalypse was happening and the blog's author was taking in other children + trying to keep her own family afloat was posted to the blue, I think in a post that aggregated multiple noteworthy stories, possibly for being nominated for something. Have been trying unsuccessfully to find it. [more inside]
Best way to search archives?
After excellent success using ask.me to get a gift idea, I don't want to spam metafilter with questions about all my friends and relations- but how best to search the archives? [more inside]
Looking for a webcomic
I've been unsuccessfully trying to search for a webcomic posted in the comments (maybe a couple/few years ago?) about a nerd 'Rip Van Winkle' illustrating the difference between the promise of 'nerds then' -- perhaps around 30 years back -- to the comparative letdown of 'nerds now'. Ring any bells? I thought it might have been SMBC, but looking through the archives, I'm pretty sure it's not. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)
Looking for a post about an awesome judge
I am looking for a post I saw a while ago- maybe last summer? Maybe before? In the last five years, probably the last two years. It was about an American judge, an older white man, who was fairly conservative, absolutely demolishing the arguments of a lawyer against.. gay marriage? Some form of gay rights? This judge is known for doing this sort of thing. I think he's a fairly high placed judge somewhere in the middle of America.
Thanks!
Should searching a sub-site make all search boxes go to the subsite?
Here's how I inevitably search Ask Metafilter:
- Click on "AskMeFi".
- Type a search in the search box.
- Realize I want to search for something else.
- Type a search in the top right (original) search box.
- Realize I've searched MetaFilter because I used the wrong box.
How do you track and curate your favorite threads for future reference?
I've marked a ton of threads on the blue and green as favorites for later reference (recipe questions, fitness recs, etc). When I want to find something later I either do a Google boolean search (ugh) or poke around and scroll through my favorites list, but both these options are a drag. [more inside]
Custome search doesn't search fanfare?
Has anyone else run into a problem pulling up fanfare threads through site search or am I an idiot? [more inside]
Can I search within a search? Show me please.
Is there a "search within a search" function that I haven't figured out? What I mean is: Can I do a first search, then search within those first results to narrow down the list? This is about my search skills specific to the site rather than site lack. [more inside]
Looking for a comment on Metafilter and search is failing me.
Some time in the relatively recent past there was a discussion on one of Metafilter's sites wherein a user posted a snarky line something like "Hey Jimmy, don't get raped" in a discussion of an anti-rape or abuse meme/campaign that was current on Facebook at the time. Search is failing me.
How do you search AskMe?
How do you search through old askmes? I find tags pretty useless because I doubt they catch everything I'd want to find on a given subject. Google search limited by "site:ask.metafilter.com" is my main go-to, but on a broad topic, it is pretty useless as well, also it doesn't seem to always find everything. When I have a question, I'd rather see if it's been covered before rather than ask it again, but trying to find those old threads and sort through them is often overwhelming. [more inside]
Like Google but Better: The Chrome-Ask-Mefi link
It may be that I am the last person to have figured this out, and if so, then I apologize, but I just discovered the lovely customized search engine feature of google chrome to automatically delve through askmefi troves for pearls of wisdom.
Basically, in Chrome's preferences pages, in the manage custom search engines area, I plugged in this URL: https://www.google.ca/#q=site:ask.metafilter.com+%s
and set up "ask" as the keyword.
Now, in the address bar, I can just type "ask", then Tab, and then whatever keyword, and I get a lovely list of the relevant askmefi pages (see here).
In so many cases, its better than Google!

Looking for a comment about persimmons
It's persimmon season, and for the last few years I've been trying to remember a rhyme I read on metafilter that helped you remember how you should eat the two different kinds. It starts with "if it's shaped like a disk, eat it crisp; if it's shaped like a torpedo..."-- I don't remember the rest. [more inside]
Pony: Don't send focus to search box when search results page loads

Post about photos of sullen teens?
Please help me find a recent post about teens' sullen expressions in photographs! I think the post linked to someone who had coined an expression about the "oh my god, why are you making me do this thing" face that some teens make in photos.
Method for tracking interesting slow-burn threads?
Most posts in the blue or green seem to be active for a day or two before contributions trail off. However some continue to grow over a much longer period (or are resurrected by a new flurry of activity). I am thinking of this Edward Snowden thread which is still going strong after a month, for example. Those who have posted to such threads can normally maintain awareness of them via "Recent Activity". Is there any way of doing so for the rest of us? If not then could this be considered as a feature? [more inside]
Please Help Me Find an AskMe Answer I Posted
About 3 years ago, I posted an AskMe comment in a thread that I *thought* started off, "I grew up in Hell." It got a lot of favorites, even recently, which freaks me out a bit because the description of my childhood was so raw. Weird to see people are still reading that thread!
I wanted to reference it for this current question, but I could not find it.
Can anyone find it?
The original thread was really long, and was an AskMe from a man that was engaged to a woman with deep emotional problems.
Thanks for your help!
When was the last time a FPP neared 700 comments?
http://www.metafilter.com/128626/Matt-Smith-is-leaving-Doctor-Who - Is there a way to search, sort, organized based on what's generated the most discussion?
We have images! ... In search results?
I used the search field while logged out tonight, and saw this: thumbnails next to search results. Is this some left-over from MetaFiltrest, or have thumbnails been part of non-user searches for a while? [more inside]
You're my favorite.
If favorites are bookmarks, and I'm not saying that they are, it would be nice to be able to search them by username. [more inside]
Look, you're really cute, but I can't understand what you're saying...
"Looks like you're searching for an exact phrase. The local search doesn't do that so well. Be sure to try your search for "_____" at Google if you don't find what you're looking for here." Perhaps it's just my colorblind eyes, but I can't see anything other than the "deep space nine" link in the notice above my search results. Is there any chance the Big Dark Bar of Highlighting could be changed to a different color so the text stands out more effectively? Thank you!
Searching for doubles
I've noticed that the search function doesn't catch YouTube doubles if the URL isn't exact. Here's a tip: grab the alphanumeric ID of the video from its URL and search mefi using only that. For example, searching for 9Iq5yCoHp4o pulls up this post, but a search for http://youtu.be/9Iq5yCoHp4o and http://www.youtube.com/embed/9Iq5yCoHp4o fail, even though they all point to the same video.
EVERYBODY GETS A PONY!
Pony Request: a search function for MeMail. We're able to search our activity and favorites, and I'd love to be able to do the same for MeMail. I know MeMail isn't meant to replicate the features of services like Gmail, but I think this particular function would be really useful.
The Heat Is On
So thanks to this MeTa I found (and "Liked", of course) the MetaFilter Facebook page. Upon reading said page, however, one of the terms from the "Related Searches" section stood out: "metafilter convection oven". I am very curious to find out now why this is apparently a popular enough search to show up on the Facebook page. Is this merely a glitch on Facebook's end or is there something about ovens that I really should know and y'all can tell me about? What am I missing out on here?
Tags with weird characters
When tags with non-ASCII characters appear in the tag search results, the links are broken (while tags with non-Latin-1 characters are simply not accessible by any means). Tags with percent signs make the server grumpy. Underscores also seem to be treated somewhat inconsistently (or at least counterintuitively) by the tag search. [more inside]

You know, just in case I want to write something for the Fringe Festival...
I'm looking for a comment that I just can't find and want to read again. It detailed a version of Sex In The City as performed as a Beckett-like Black Box stage production. The women wailed a chorus of " THE SHOES" someone said " I fear I am not fecund". I have tried every permutation I could think of with no success. I'm 99% sure I read it here.

Where My (MetaFilter) Homies Is At?
Is there a search-for-contacts, find-your-friends feature buried somewhere in MetaFilter? I'd love to see if any other folks that I know are MeFites, and would gladly grant the site temporary access to my GMail address book to find out... if ONLY there were a WAY to DO it!
