Questionable use of Ellen Feiss' likeness in this ad
While the fad still exists, does anyone else have an issue with the textad for the Ellen Feiss parody? (scroll to nearly the end of the page) I'm not crazy about promoting profit from the theft of someone's likeness without their permission, but then again, this isn't my site. Should the bylaws of the textads merely weed out offensive material, or should they extend to intellectual property issues as well? While they may be two different things, a recent story on NPR highlighted that cafepress is deleting "Ellen Feiss" related stores as fast as they are created.
Can I post links that I found on Fark first?
I visit several sites and it is interesting to note where a story appears first. More than once I've seen an article on Fark a day or two before it shows up here. I'm not complaining, I know not everyone reads Fark, but is there any sort of policy on this? I mean, I've considered posting articles found on Fark but never have simply because there are 50k Fark members, so anything there will show up on many Blogs, and is thus not likely to be new to a majority of MeFians. Am I wrong? I will only post a on the front page if I can find something that I think will be interesting and new. However that may be an impossible task. Yet it can be done.
Spelling Errors on Front Page Look Bad
The front page represents us to the world. If we're going to take the trouble to post to it, can we doublecheck our spelling?
It's really old; is it still a double?
Front Page Posts. Is there a time limit before a topic is reposted? If something was posted a year ago, and you've got something new, or want to explore a different angle, how long should you wait? Or will any repost elicit a thread composed of "repost" and "how about some pancakes?"
Why is it not ok to post repeats of old posts?
Why is it necessary to point out to an author, that something that they posted and is being discussed, may have been talked about a year ago? I see this at least 4 - 5 times a week. Point in case today. I personally think this very rude, and falls under the "If you don't have anything productive to say, don't say anything at all" rule. Am I then only one who feels this way?

Are links to paysite articles okay?
Are links like this akin to saying "Harper's, page 27"? I did some metatalk searching and all I could find was a post discussing copy-and-pasting of whole pay site articles, it seems like this would have been discussed before, but I guess not.

There we go, a day's worth of Slashdot stories for you.

At what point did the "Spread the Dot" thing get added to Metafilter? It's a googlebomb attempt.

non-users posting by proxy: kosher?
I'd like to discuss the appropriateness of allowing non-users to post by proxy, in relation to a conflict here between Medley and myself. [more inside]
Can we stop talking about Israel and Palestine?
People say that I/P Filter turns them off, but this link got 78 comments in two hours in the middle of a "slow, yet golden period". As usual, it quickly degenerated into a brawl. Has a whole topic ever been banned from MetaFilter?
How about a little meat to go with that book?
Can we call out the comment without calling out the commenter?
Have we at last completely abandoned any hope of civility and reasonable discourse on Metafilter? There's disagreement, and then there's constant, consistent patterns of personal attacks on anyone who disagrees with one in the slightest. Is there no line to be drawn, or is Matt on vacation? Internet community or "flame the newbie"?
ReadMe link
ReadMe is your standard warning regarding the do's and don'ts of how readers should respond to blog output. Granted, MetaFilter promotes discussion, sometimes quite heated, but perhaps these are good rules of conduct for MeFites?
Why was my post to badassbuddy.com deleted?
I posted a link on MeFi today to www.badassbuddy.com. It is a website that features tons of buddy icons for AOL IM. Matt took it down and I can't figure out why. Any ideas?
Guidelines for MeFi vs Sportsfilter
With World Cup fanaticism one week away (for some of us ever present), what are guidelines for Metafilter posts (eg vs Sportsfilter posts) ? Thanks.
Trolling: secret agreement, or an excuse to beat a dead horse?
See now, here is my question, with all sincerity, does MeFi continue to allow such troll posting because MeFi (semi-secretly) agrees with the poster, or just because MeFi wants another excuse to beat a dead horse?
Chatfilter posts are bad posts.
I hear your words but they don't link what you think they link
Posts that don't actually point to their topic? The item itself is kind of interesting, but the links don't provide anything in terms of supporting the issue.

Posts without any links.
Sean Meade posts a FPP without any links, but summarizes an article he read. The reaction is less than enthusiastic. Sean Meade takes offense. Can I post a summary of a conversation I had the other day?
Too many newsfilter FPPs don't make for a good front page
I’m really confused. This happens often so do try to help me out. The guidelines describe a good post as a web page that most people haven’t seen which contains interesting content and might warrant discussion. Does a story that ran in a few national newspapers and recieved play on several news networks fit that criteria? Remote Rats, The Clinton Show, Powell Peace Conference, the missing Florida girl and two Massaoui stories can't seem to be defined — according to the guidelines — as a good post. So why are there so many?
is there a vaccine for your favorite X?
We seem to be in the midst of another "what's your favorite X" mini-epidemic: a link which varies from interesting to trivial, followed by an invitation to opine. This time it's sandwiches, beverages, newspapers, snacks, arcade games, amusing childhood beliefs. I won't bother to criticize--we've covered that ground many times here already. But I think it's interesting how when these things happen, it only takes one precipitating post to generate several others, seemingly on a "yeah! And hey, what about this?" principle. What's your favorite favorite-X question?
Cookies
I have been reading about cookies, persistent logins, and session management lately and was curious how the MeFi code handles this. (Specifically, persistence of user information across sessions.) I couldn't find a description of this in any old MeTa threads.... [more inside]
How many comments is too many in one thread?
Would commenting Fifteen times in one thread be considered breaking the 'chat threshold'? This question was asked before and Matt weighed in three times. Just wondering.
Why recent comments on old threads don't show up on front page
Maybe it's just that the server didn't refresh or something else, but I just posted a message to an old thread (February 22, 2002), with some updated information, and it doesn't seem to have made it to the front page. Is there a limit to how far back the "Recent comments (on 20 threads)" looks?
One word posts are annoying.
One word posts on the MeFi front page are in my opinion more annoying than those that are over 100 words long. I'd rather have too much information about what I'm about to click on rather than not enough. Discuss? Which do you prefer? Are there ever times when one word posts are acceptable?
Pony: commenters must read links
File this one under something for the far flung future, but how about a "you have to have read a link to post a comment" feature.
Is there some sort of official policy regarding deleting posts?
Is there some sort of official policy regarding deleting posts? I didn't even know it was done until mine was deleted yesterday.
How do you credit a link you found elsewhere?
What is the current approach to credit the source of a link?
I've posted a link today and credited the place where I actually found the link, in this case a personal weblog. Inside the thread, someone mentioned that it could be credited to Reuters and I was puzzled by that.
So, when I come across an interesting link and decide to post it, should I credit the place where I found it or should I credit the original source? I didn't want to raise this question in the original thread to avoid sidetracking...

New info: How long to wait before starting a new post rather than commenting on a recent post?
First off, I'm not trying to be snarky or imply that anyone did anything wrong here. I just want clarification from the community on something I'm unsure about. This thread updates a previous thread with new information. However, the previous thread in question was started the day before, and already had this information added, 40 minutes before the new thread was started. Is there a decent period of grace before one can consider it worth posting an update thread rather than adding to the existing one, or is this always ok now?
Is this a violation of privacy?
How do we feel about the real or imagined privacy violations involved in signing up for the google PageRank toolbar system? I find an old discussion here but the privacy issue really isn't discussed in detail. I seek the opinions of the learned.

What goes in MetaTalk? What goes in MetaFilter?

Do we have a general consensus on multiple-topic posts? While there is a relation in that Beast was mentioned in the Casciano essay, I really wonder if one or the other should have have been linked, as the space for discussion ends up too open.

A felicitous one-off or an example to be followed?
Norton DC's "marker" post is simple and to the point. It only links to a photograph but the way it's worded suggests the picture is representative of a wider subject: careless parenting, "kids will be kids", toy safety and possibly the redundance of "creative" presents such as crayons or markers for toddlers, etc. So is it a felicitous one-off or an example to be followed? eBay has been especially zany lately
what is with the recent spate of threads about 'zany' ebay auctions? it's not like there's a shortage of other, more appropriate venues. can/should something be done to curtail this practice before it becomes a daily occurrence?
