MeFi Meetup Update: Vegas Meetup suffers from lack of attendance. I'd say that what happens in vegas stays in vegas, but in this case it seems nothing happened.

Michigan MeFi Camping Trip. I know there's only six or seven of us, but I was wonderin' if there was any interest. I got some great land in
Mancelona (4 1/2 hrs from detroit, 3 from G.R.), we could drink beer and shoot some guns and catch some fish.
more fun than hanging out at some fruity sushi bar and showin' off our fancy pants leather jackets.

Having never been to a Metafilter meetup, I have a question.
Do people gravitate together in chat groups in the same way they do online? Do the snarky posters just wander over and interject something trollish?
I know people personally that fit many personalities found here, and just wondered how much MeTa spills over into real life, by those who have met them.
posted by Balisong to MetaFilter-Related at 11:55 PM PST - 70 comments
so, are there differences between the posting limits (once per week) on ask.mefi and metafilter proper? In other words, once you've posted anywhere on the Mefi network, do you have to wait a week to post elsewhere, or is the posting limit unique to each area?
Also, it would be cool if "best answers" were tallied for each user, and posting frequency tied to it somehow. Or not. Please don't hurt me.

Matt, can you please add Wikipedia to the list of places to check on the AskMe

A number of times, I've noticed perfectly cromulent answers were in there. In fact, I bet Mefites can suggest at least a couple other "check here first" sources.

What are the economics of metafilter? I assume that everyone gets some enjoyment out of posting things of interest (in economics terms, intrinsic motivation), but what sort of extrinsic payoff motivates posters in terms of posts -- number of replies? controversy? "this is good" statements? [more]

As a consumer, I've had a few very good and very bad experiences with service providers, recently. It'd be great if MetaFilter had a subsection to share these experiences to help the community share the joy and avoid the pain. Reviewing products and services where more people will see them is great way to improve services for everyone, and would have the potential for greater effect than discussing these things on our own weblogs. Perhaps this would be another way to harness the community positively in the way Ask MetaFilter has. How about it?

I like
this post, and I like similar posts. But based on recent history, if it was from any other poster, it would result in a lot of people complaining in the thread and calling for its deletion. I just want the over-zealous self police enforcers around here to consider that, and step back a little to consider how they have contributed to the site recently. Please help make MetaFilter a more relaxed and friendly place, with in-thread bickering especially kept to a minimum.

Good idea: Playing with kittens. Bad idea:
posting the address and phone number of someone tangentially involved in a news story, who didn't do anything wrong, can't do anything about the situation, and actually tried to help in the only way he could. Oh yeah, and who may not even be the actual person referred to in the story.

I am not a fan of "why did you delete my comment"? posts, but, er, feel compelled to ask... Why delete the three comments in the NYT thread which linked to other online papers? Maybe they should have been more verbose, but I think the point they were making is clear - there's a whole variety of fish in that online paper sea, why get so het up about the NYT?

My bad:
this post is probably worded a bit awkwardly; should probably be something more like "commerce clause grants congress the exclusive power to regulate interstate commerce" or something like that. Point being that other bodies (e.g. state legislatures) aren't allowed. If clear enough, let it sit. Thanks.

Why do anonymous posts seem to come in bursts on AskMeFi? It seems that more often than not, 3 or 4 anonymous questions pop up in a row (for instance: today

3) Do anonymous questions sit in an approval queue before being posted to the main site, or is this phenomena purely coincidental?

Can I just make a frustration-vent post? These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly, several times a day, and to be honest... I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready to move on to another spot. The problem is that, for me, my main community site is like comfort food; it's a place that I can always pop into to see posts and comments from the people I know, and I can always fill in a time gap or soothe my real-life-related nerves by browsing there. But one of the things about comfort food is that it has to be easy and accessible, and lately, MeFi... isn't. So I have some questions...

Is it no longer acceptable to leave a comment with simply a period - "

I still see it happen in the blue but don't see it often in the green, and it now seems one of my comments like that was just deleted in the green... I don't want to piss on anyone here about that, just trying to figure out if it is cool to do it or not.

Now that I think about it since I'm on Fedora Core 3 instead of Windows or a Mac, I'll probably just have to live with it.

"And that clot is blocking your wife's cervix."
First, bait emotionally susceptible people with some easy trollery.
Second, after you've drawn out some victims, call them "shallow hags" and tell them to "take [their] self-absorbed neuroses to an appropriate forum."
Third, deliver the knockout blow: attack them with their own medical conditions!

Why do people keep
asking medical questions on AskMe when the reply is ALWAYS going to be "See a doctor?" Should we have a message like they have on doctors phone lines that says, "If you think you have a medical problem, don't ask us, GO SEE A DOCTOR." in the AxMe posting page?
As a broader question, is community decision making and the internet replacing common sense?

This post has a link that points to the homepage of some site with the article everyone wants to blather on about. But, the posted link is not a
permalink --
this is, the other is not.
It's hard enough linking to sites that might disappear in a year or so, making the archives redundant, but to link in this slipshod way will probably make this post defunct within a week, month? Perhaps a little tiny wee blurb on the posting page would help?

Obviously features hardly ever get implemented, but here's an easy one: Including new posts without comments in the 'Recent Comments' sort view. This would resemble the sorting that is done on nearly all forum systems, and I think it would be goddamned nifty.
