October 2010 Archives (all archives)
I'm genuinely curious to know if others find the use of the word "unpleasant", when directed at a female member, to be sexist? Ouisch dropped this comment and when asked to elaborate she attributed it to a "silly theory" she has which she explains here. I don't see it, but I'd be interested in further explanation.
I worked for a couple of days on a post on Chrontendo, the project of a guy to play every Famicom and NES game, and in chronological order to boot. (It reminds me a bit of Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, but no matter.) When I finished it and tried to post it I found out that it had already been posted. (In fact, I myself had commented on it, which was odd.) However, the work I had done in constructing the post, which links to every video's description page and notes which ones contain particularly interesting games, shouldn't go to waste I think. The original thread is long closed, so I'm going to paste my links in the More Inside of this post for people to peruse and enjoy. [more inside]
Brain.. hurting.. in a recent(!?) political outrage filter, some brilliant individual made a wonderfully astute comment where he/she/it postulated that reforming government and all it entailed was a wildly complex set of problems, and the issue with the standard tea party(?) mindset was simply wiping it all away and that isn't a reasonable way to fix it. Can't. Find. It. Can you point me to it?
I'm having a dickens of a time finding a post or comment (and possibly an AskMe spawned by the post) about a judge who was famous for his stylish and funny decisions, and even had an extensive fan website dedicated to him. Someone also linked to a blog that collected well-written or notable legal opinions. Can anyone help me find this post?
For Halloween, which character actor or actress would you be? [more inside]
Question about racist comments [more inside]
deezil has an excellent spyware removal/virus removal guide in his profile. Are there other members with similarly useful content?
Improper grammar on the Ask MeFi New Question page when you've already posted a question? You may ask another question in: 1 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes, 57 seconds. I think so. It would be nice if this could be fixed.
MeFiMu pony inquiry: probably too hard to do but how feasible would it be to add functionality to replace the MP3 in a particular song post? [more inside]
A few usability ponies for MoFi, please? I'd offer to code but I'm only so so and reluctant to stir unknown code. Alternatively, anyone have mobile navigation tips or app advice? A short phone-limited lazy SL previously ..... [more inside]
On linking to copyright-infringing downloads. [more inside]
My Pony would like to meet other Ponies. [more inside]
Criticizing a question is not the same as insulting the asker. It's also not necessarily derailing. [more inside]
Help me find this horrible cartoon featured on MeFi years ago. [more inside]
"It's an awful scene and I know it's making the poliblog rounds, but it's also basically "here is an awful thing that happened" without any meat to it and folks who are paying any attention to this election cycle are pretty likely to see it themselves at TPM or elsewhere." This seemed like a reasonable deletion reason to me. So, I'm confused as to why the second Rand Paul Curb-Stomping post is less deleteworthy than the first, considering that they're basically identical links to a story on left-wing blog? [more inside]
Would it be possible (or desirable) for comments in recent activity to show up in reverse chronological order? I am forever scrolling past the stuff I have already read down to the one new comment, then blowing past it and scrolling back up. If there's already a Greasemonkey fix for this, I would love to install it.
As a relative newbie, when did certain phrases become cliche on ask metafilter? Specifically I refer to "What are some best practices for x?", referring to aforementioned "best practices" as "hacks" and "help me hivemind!!!". I'm curious as I work in an environment where catchphrases and buzzwords are similarly bandied about.
Questions about cooking food in bulk portions? [more inside]
In light of the constant debate about who is American and who is Usonian (or whatever favorite adjective you have). How do you identify yourself? [more inside]
Could there be a Project Help sub-sub-site? I envision something akin to Music Talk where folks can post their Kickstarter campaigns, requests for collaboration, brainstorm sessions, etc. [more inside]
This post was sadly deleted before we could determine the correct solution to an age old conundrum - what is the best way for Mefites to make tea? Clearly such matters must be thrashed out in depth!
Back in 2007, cortex put together a list of the taglines created on the blue and the grey. They're ripe with phrases that could be adapted for use on signs at the Sanity/Fear rally this weekend. Can these lists be updated so we can see the more current taglines?
Green or blue post with comments about amazing Flickr search tools? [more inside]
That post about baking a cake with yogurt, using the yogurt container as a measure? [more inside]
Anyone up for NaNoWriMo? National Novel Writing Month begins in just a week: participants devote the month of November to a 50,000 word blitz. Here's a thread where MeFites can share past experiences and future intentions. [more inside]
i love you all [more inside]
I wrote a bookmarklet to help sort posts by 'Best Answer' and number of 'Favorites'--wanna test it out for me? See external directions here [more inside]
Some people don't like it when certain things are discussed. [more inside]

Slight issue with IRL: what if the location isn't easily findable on Google Maps? [more inside]
Douchebag retro-sexism: not cool [more inside]
Mefites, what do you like about Metafilter? What do you love? What's the best thing that's happened to you here? What's the most amazing thing you've seen? What's so vert about online communities anyway? What makes you come back? What has Metafilter done for you?
Between Miller, O'Donnell, Aqua Buddah, and Ginny Thomas it seems like a politics filter orgy. Much like Sarah Palin, if we pick up every gossip item we could fpp each hour on this. Perhaps we can agree to take a break. [more inside]
Looking for the ask me question that said, basically: "Where is the evidence that the middle class is shrinking?" I've been unable to google it up, and it appeared in the past week or so. Sorry, and thank you.
MeTa thread to move the discussion and repetitive noise in this AskMe question about whether or not the anonymous poster either the woman mentioned in this post, or actually the same user posing as his would-be fiance. [more inside]
A happy ending for a MeFite in trouble (and her brother). Faraday Cage, who has been through a lot, should win the Profile in Courage award for the year. Huzzah!
Is anyone else having trouble accessing The Blue? Kaspersky is telling me that it's infected with Virus.BAT.Tnse. [more inside]
I call shenanigans on this post about how hating muslims is logical. "American Thinker" is one of the loonier wingnut/Teabagger rags out there. [more inside]
How about a MetaFilter Dungeons and Dragons (and other RPGs, of course) club/forum? [more inside]
Can we try to admonish people less often about "overthinking?" [more inside]
Was there an AskMe about an old neighborhood safety program in which one would put a sign in one's window if it was ok for neighborhood kids to take refuge from bullies there? I SWEAR that's where I heard about this. Any ideas? Search is not helping me.
How did using italics for quoting become house style? If it didn't just evolve, who pushed it and why?
Any chance of having a notification when my user name is mentioned in a thread? [more inside]
I've been trying for months now to find a metafilter post from a year or two back. It was MLYT, to someone who made short video pieces - as I recall, a lot of them were of carefully assembled stacks of things falling over. [more inside]
I have been puzzled by the deletion of this post all day. I want to know the story and couldn't find any answers searching around Metafilter. Anyone know what cortex is referring to? [more inside]
I'd like to call Rhaomi out for his habit of making exhaustingly comprehensive, well-written posts. I don't know how he has the patience to both find such interesting content and to document it so thoroughly, but I'm glad he has it. Cheers to you!
So its against MF policy now to point out that the the Internet is available outside the USA? - If you remove all the meta commentary who does the OP learn? [more inside]
Login Error / Broken Link. Tried to log in. Was told to use a captcha. Didn't. Clicked log in and got a page which said: "Go back and use the captcha to log in." Clicked the "Go Back" link and got this page: https://login.metafilter.com/login/ which doesn't exist. [more inside]
Back in November of 2007 I came across jonson’s fpp about Geoff Manaugh’s blog post on a photographer named Shaun O’Boyle. I really liked the photographs, and sometimes my job allows me to develop a book. So I did. Kind of about that link. I asked Geoff Manaugh to write the intro to the book, and he said yes, and then he surprisingly cited an unrelated Metafilter comment in the essay he submitted. [more inside]
How do I add white space between items in bulleted lists on Metafilter? [more inside]
I've been hunting without success for a post about a collector of old "ethnic" records. There's one song in particular that I'd love to hear again... [more inside]
I've gotten to the age that I've lost my Google-fu. In some M. Night Shyamalan thread, there was a link to a comic that showed a progression from "who?" to "this guy is great" to "this guy sucks". Where.
As a followup to not_on_display's requesting a way to download all of the Metafilter Music songs last month: a torrent is now available. [more inside]
Is there a tried and true method of posting links to journal articles that are only accessible with an id/password from an academic institution? [more inside]
Perhaps sidebarable, Bwithh's comment on the Simpsons Banksy thread offers a fascinating look into animation in both Koreas, with several great links on N. Korea's relationship with the industry. [more inside]
I can't believe what he's trying to pull... [more inside]
Has there ever been a relationships thread on Ask Metafilter where the overwhelming response from the crowd WASN'T to DTMFA? [more inside]
What are the sources in the MetaFilter community network where if its not an FPP, doesn't fit into any other category and I don't really feel like framing it as an AskMe, can I vent, chat with friends&Mefites, and deal with something on my mind, in general?
Is there anything comparable to AskMeFi for general questions, career-related questions or apartment-hunting questions? Or is there any way around the 1 AskMeFi question per week? [more inside]
Update: to the MSI month at the Museum Contest (previously) mefi's very own avoision was not selected from the five finalists! [more inside]
Question : Once I've posted a meetup to the IRL page, why does it need to be posted a second time to appear in "Upcoming Meetups?" Shouldn't this be automatic or something?
A six year old MeFi thread (one comment in particular) was mentioned in a Failbook entry. I think that was the last place I'd expected to see a MeFi reference.
Update to this post on Tim Langdell, Mobigames and the Edge trademark: EA Victorious as Court Denies Injunction Against Publisher for 'Edge' Trademark The court has denied Edge Games’ motion for injunction, citing that it believes that Langdell made fraudulent statements to the US Patent and Trademark Office and strongly believes that Langdell is “suspect,” and has been “trolling” the game industry for licensing opportunities. His actions could possibly warrant “criminal penalties.”
Episode 55 of the MetaFilter podcast features the best of September 2010. It runs about an hour and 20 minutes long and was recorded on September 29, 2010. [more inside]
"call with google voice" [more inside]
This post is in response to two related things: 1) micawber's personal attacks in several threads (now deleted) and 2) cortex's public lumping of the two of us together in terms of bad behavior. [more inside]
Racking my brains here looking for a semi-recent (this year? 2009?) Ask Metafilter question: Someone's wife was documenting every perceived slight and argument, I believe by printing out chats and emails. Please tell me I'm not imagining this post, as it had some thoughtful answers that would be useful to show to a friend to whom this is now happening!
Gimme an E! Gimme an R! Gimme an I! Gimme a C! Gimme a B! What's that spell? I can't hear you -- what's that spell?
I'm calling out ericb... for his awesome work in keeping appropriate news article links flowing into threads, sometimes even long after the activity has died down. [more inside]
if anyone lost a comment they're particularly proud of the deleting mod pretty much invited you to re-post it to the open thread here. Apparently not. As one who simply doesn't have the time to monitor every thread that comes by, but who would still like to comment, may I ask what the problem is in keeping the post open? Closing any MeTa thread seems antithetical to the very concept of MetaTalk, and Cortex's reason is insubstantial.
reddit is a great site and a great community - and it provides a ton of FPP content to metafilter - which is also a great site with a great community. When we create an fpp sourced from reddit can we acknowledge the source as in [via]? Sure, if the post was created independently of reddit, then no issue, but if you did grab the slyt from reddit then it would be nice if you attributed accordingly.
I'd probably want to sweep this booger-string of a deleted thread under the rug too if it was my site. But it's sort of sad to lose such a gold star collection of mefi members practicing the non-bigotry they preach, so if anyone lost a comment they're particularly proud of the deleting mod pretty much invited you to re-post it to the open thread here.
Quick reminder that MeTa Book Club discussion of Frannie and Zooey, and of the Yale Prof. Amy Hungerford lecture about the book, goes up October 18 on MetaChat. All the information you need is here in the MeCha wiki page for the MeTa Book Club. Discussion of what book to read after F&Z will be in a subsequent Oct. 25 MetaChat thread.
