just wondered how much MeTa spills over into real life

Having never been to a Metafilter meetup, I have a question.
Do people gravitate together in chat groups in the same way they do online? Do the snarky posters just wander over and interject something trollish?
I know people personally that fit many personalities found here, and just wondered how much MeTa spills over into real life, by those who have met them.

Posting limits?

so, are there differences between the posting limits (once per week) on ask.mefi and metafilter proper? In other words, once you've posted anywhere on the Mefi network, do you have to wait a week to post elsewhere, or is the posting limit unique to each area?

Also, it would be cool if "best answers" were tallied for each user, and posting frequency tied to it somehow. Or not. Please don't hurt me.

Product review subsection

As a consumer, I've had a few very good and very bad experiences with service providers, recently. It'd be great if MetaFilter had a subsection to share these experiences to help the community share the joy and avoid the pain. Reviewing products and services where more people will see them is great way to improve services for everyone, and would have the potential for greater effect than discussing these things on our own weblogs. Perhaps this would be another way to harness the community positively in the way Ask MetaFilter has. How about it?

Too much snarking in Tim Burton thread

The signal to snark ratio on Metafilter is at an all-time low, as evidenced by this thread.

Metafilter's always been snarky, but I just thought the vicious personal attacks in the thread were completely out of hand and ruined it completely, starting with kjh's "that's what you get for dressing like an idiot" and spiraling downward to keswick's various "clever" remarks. (The irony of the image near the bottom of the page just kills me, though.)

lulz okay for thee but not for me?

I like this post, and I like similar posts. But based on recent history, if it was from any other poster, it would result in a lot of people complaining in the thread and calling for its deletion. I just want the over-zealous self police enforcers around here to consider that, and step back a little to consider how they have contributed to the site recently. Please help make MetaFilter a more relaxed and friendly place, with in-thread bickering especially kept to a minimum.

Good idea: Playing with kittens. Bad idea: posting the address and phone number of someone tangentially involved in a news story, who didn't do anything wrong, can't do anything about the situation, and actually tried to help in the only way he could. Why do anonymous posts seem to come in bursts on AskMeFi? It seems that more often than not, 3 or 4 anonymous questions pop up in a row (for instance: today 1, 2, 3) Do anonymous questions sit in an approval queue before being posted to the main site, or is this phenomena purely coincidental?

These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly

Can I just make a frustration-vent post? These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly, several times a day, and to be honest... I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready to move on to another spot. The problem is that, for me, my main community site is like comfort food; it's a place that I can always pop into to see posts and comments from the people I know, and I can always fill in a time gap or soothe my real-life-related nerves by browsing there. But one of the things about comfort food is that it has to be easy and accessible, and lately, MeFi... isn't. So I have some questions...

This post has a link that points to the homepage of some site with the article everyone wants to blather on about. But, the posted link is not a permalink -- this is, the other is not.

It's hard enough linking to sites that might disappear in a year or so, making the archives redundant, but to link in this slipshod way will probably make this post defunct within a week, month? Perhaps a little tiny wee blurb on the posting page would help?

So say I find a product on the web...I buy said product, and it is revolutionary for its purpose (using your is a combo of mouse pad/teflon feet/teflon wax from the same company), would it be wrong/shameless to link said product on MetaFilter? (I am in no way related to this company other than I bought the products and I find them to be truly amazing). I simply want to share the love with any gamers/designers that could benefit from its use.

Great coverage of UK general election

I've really enjoyed reading and participating in the coverage the UK general election has received at MetaFilter, particularly the follow-up threads (which, in one case, might otherwise have been dismissed as news filter). Contrasting points of view expressed intelligently and with measure. Well done.

Why does MetaFilter occasionally just wink out of existence?

I'm fairly new around these parts, so forgive me if this is stupid question, but why does MetaFilter occasionally just wink out of existence? This doesn't seem to happen to most of my other favorite sites.

Editorial posts and how to make them better

What does peacay's comment mean on this thread I just posted to MetaFilter. I'm relatively new and naive to MeFi and would appreciate an explanation. Also, I used HTML formatting in the latter linked post. Why was it stripped from my thread?

Misdirecting link?

Misdirecting link? in this askme thread, there are "Older" and "Newer" links at the bottom. However, the "Older" link goes to a question from May 1, though the thread index is, indeed, one lower than the original. It appears that the thread indexes are not chronologically assigned. Is this intentional?

a thread about women's issues without any useless "yuck!" comments from the XY crowd

I just wanted to say that it's somewhat refreshing to see a thread about women's issues without any useless "yuck!" comments from the XY crowd. Thought it'd be good to say something nice for a change.

I almost posted this in the thread, which would have been deliciously ironic.

Outage, whoops

Sorry about that, but for the first time since I started hosting mefi at server matrix, there was an outage:

D2 OUTAGE: Last Updated: 05/04/2005 19:05:17 Details: This server did not come back online after reboot. We will investigate shortly.

(bwalker-05/04/2005 19:05:17): This server would not power on. We have swapped the chassis and this machine is now powered up and responding to ping and RDC.

But all should be good now.

Portland Meetup

Sorry for the short-notice reminder, it snuck up. Portland, Oregon MeFi Meetup, May 7th, 5:30, Lucky Lab Brewpub in Hawthorne. Same time, same place, same cast and crew, and hopefully some new faces. We'll be meeting out back by the parking lot in the covered area so that those that want can bring their pooches. See you then!

Pam Anderson/KFC thread needs a NSFW tag

Slutfilter: I hate to sound like a prude, but the Pam Anderson/Kentucky Fried Cruelty ad isn't really SFW. I work in a tutoring lab and have had two students ask me what I'm lookin' at...

Tired old argument

This thread should be fun.

Really? I hate to spoil the ending for you, but this thread has already been fun over and over and over and over. It always goes the same way. Thanks for summarizing it for us, but is there some purpose in posting the results of a Google news search for "smoking" other than to rehash the same old tired argument yet again?

Thanks, Mods!

I'm not completely sure who is babysitting Metafilter while Matt has way more important things going on, but I just wanted to say "Thanks" to whomever is keeping an eye on things and also "Thanks" to the community for (apparently) keeping the chaos to a minimum while he's away.

Suggesting comments on drunk posting are emailed vs. made in thread

If you suspect another user has been PWI (Posting While Intoxicated) why not send him an email instead of ridiculing it in the thread? See related alarmist post here

The early days of MeFi

Looking back in the archives, almost every post (except for 4) in August of '99 was submitted by #1. I wonder if those first few months of MeFi's life was frustrating.

OK, I was a little bit of a jerk, but the reply was worse!

I grant that my first comment in this thread was a little troll-ish, and I'm sorry about that. I probably contributed a pretty bad atmosphere to the discussion there. But was this really warranted?
