OLPC unboxing photos and reviews in The Blue okay?
There has been some interest expressed in hearing directly from MetaFilter members as they receive their OLPC laptops. Would a front page post be the appropriate forum? I'm concerned it would be viewed as self-linking. [more inside]
'Very Short Introductions' very short life
I'm kinda bumed this post on the 'Very Short Introductions' series was deleted, but understand why. Any suggestions how to get the book series in the blue, besides pushing illegal copies? The FPP had 4 favorites in its brief life and had some useful discussion starting about the best books in the series.
Finally!
It's not *that* bad, but....
Sometimes I want a flag along the lines of "this whole thread needs special attention." What should I do when this happens? [more inside]
MeFi book deals?!
Jessica Hagy, author of Indexed, the Venn Diagrams-on-cards blog, on how she went from unknown blog to bookdeal in just a few months: "About a week after I posted the first batch last August, somebody linked the blog to Metafilter. Whoever you are, thank you! That's how my agent (it's still strange to me that I have an honest-to-god agent) found me, and from there, it just sort of took off." Crazy.
Favorites in Recent Activity
Mini-pony: When I favorite a thread, I want it to show up in my Recent Activity. [more inside]
How close is "close"?
This thread was deleted for being a link to the poster's friend's site. The FAQ includes material produced by "close friends" in the self-link category. Does this mean we can't post anything made by people we know? [more inside]
Overmoderation.
Hi there, mods. Yes, you. Mathowie, jessamyn and cortex. Please stop closing MeTa threads so early and so often. I think you're forgetting the "community" part. [more inside]
How many flags do I have?
Can we find out how many flags our posts get? [more inside]
If we let this go past the fifth anniversary, it'll never go away.
Is this the end ?
It's been 19 hours and no posts to the front page today - have we reached the end of the internet ? [more inside]
Why can't one favorite deleted threads?
Why can't one favorite deleted threads? There are a few methods of viewing deleted threads, and one can work around the issue by favoriting a comment in a deleted thread; however I think it would be nifty if we could favorite a deleted thread itself.
Draft Posts?
Saved drafts of posts for the blue - crazy idea?
Talk about PoliticsFilter!
Why is this thread on "penalties for abortion" still here? And the FPP is a Youtube one-link yet.
MeFi Omnia Vincit
For Oklahoma's centennial, I was thinking the Okie Mefites (resident and expatriate) could contribute a set of FPP posts on the state leading up to Statehood Day (November 16). Non-Okies invited, too.
Linking to Deleted Posts?
Something about the most recent Alberto Gonzales post really irks me: people linking to their deleted posts in comments. It seems to me that this (a) just fundamentally defeats the point of the deletion, (b) lowers the incentive to make a good post in the first place -- since you can always link to it if it gets canned, and (c) is contrary to at least the tacit reasons underlying the no-double-post policy. (Obviously, there's a separate PoliticsFilter issue here, and the problems are related, but I would like to focus on the linking-to-deleted-posts issue and get a clarification on it.)
Adding link to post.
So I am a new member. I am having a hard time getting the link option to work. I click on the blue "Link" link, enter the link, then preview it and I get the full html in the preview. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!!
I'm overwhelmed
I loves me some Metafilter and AskMe - but I can't keep up!
I use Google Reader to keep things nice and condensed, but if I go more than a full work day without checking in on the Blue and the Green posts seems to easily creep over the 100+ mark. The deluge is kind of diluting the whole Metafilter experience for me 'cause it's starting to feel like there's too much to keep up with.
Anybody out there use any tricks or methodologies to keep their required Meta-reading under control?
I'm glad I'm not an admin!
disclaimer - this is not one of those 'please limit the posts' posts, as I'm all for them. I'm just looking for a way to keep things more manageable.
Feeling a little dizzy
OMG! It works! I gotta buy a sweater!
RSS Feeds for Posts?
Hi Mighty Admins (and MeFites).
Just wondering if there are RSS feeds for posts? I've just recently discovered netvibes and it would be great if I could use RSS to keep track of posts.
Of course, even better would be if I can get an RSS feed of my posts with an indication of how many comments are there. That way, I could quickly see if any new comments had been made, without having to add all these new RSS feeds everytime I make a post!
Is this all pie in the sky, or is it do-able?
Hymenplasty?
Anyone know what happened to the Hymenplasty thread? Wondering why it might have been deleted?
Edit Posting?
Just posted this
http://ask.metafilter.com/58158/Rats-in-the-car
And the preview looked fine, but the final posting is one paragraph and hard to read. How can I correct it and did I do something wrong?
VideoFilter Debate: Take 42
VideoFilter Debate: Take 42 - I like Tom Waits. A lot. But YouTube and a link to Wikipedia? Hardly the best of the web.
wtf is the point of this FPP?
Seriously, wtf is the point of this FPP? The site's not in english so it seems to me to be a thread that has no other purpose than to comment on the attractiveness of the women who are featured. How is this appropriate for Metafilter?
I'm sorry about my post

Help me find an FPP about swarms of birds that darken the sky
A while back (more than 2 months, less than a year) I remember an FPP that linked to a few short films of birds swarming in the sky in giant flocks that nearly darkened the sky. Might have been somewhere in the Netherlands but I recall it being an annual event. The swarming activity made for amazing patterns in the sky. I don't think this was just in my dreams but can't find it through any searches of the site. Can anyone help?
Four questions about deleted posts
Having suffered the ignominy of my first ever (undoubtedly deserved) deleted post, I have four questions:
1. What's the record for deleted posts from one user?
2. How many users have themselves ever been deleted / indefinitely suspended?
3. Is it possible to delete your own account in protest, and has anyone ever done it?
4. Do mathowie and jessamyn have the power to delete each others' posts?

Can't find comic strip post
I can't find the post that linked to an online tool to make comic strip, with a variety of artists, even though I posted at least one strip in that thread and looked through all the posts tagged with 'comic'. Either I'm blind, insane, or stupid. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Is no problem. Is now thread with greatest number of comments. Needs metafilterhistory tag, please.
There's been an awful lot of Obits lately.
when did posts with incredibly little content become acceptable on Metafilter?
Ok, when did posts with incredibly little content become acceptable on Metafilter? How is this an acceptable post? Why not just link to the image on the front page so we don't have to bother clicking a link to see one image?
Likewise, likewise, likewise. I get enough crap like this emailed to me from my dad. Ok, I don't mean to be so frank and rude, but I fear for the future of Metafilter. Posts like these are not the best of the web.

Odd, violent mythology post about angels, demons and Latino children?
Does anyone recall a post about an odd, violent mythology that had supposedly sprouted up amongst under-privilaged latino children in florida? The mythology involved angels and demons and how they affected gang violence and the like. I believe it was posted two years or so ago but I can't find it for the life of me.
Mefi-CBC Radio crossover
I have noticed lately that the topics of many of the FPP's that I read on Metafilter end up being features on CBC Radio a day or two later. Just wondering if we had a member using MeFi as a tool for providing content for their radio show on a regular basis. Is it you Sook-Yin?
Do comments make good posts?
Is it OK to construct a FPP from links and comments within another FPP?
Is this Best Posts link for August supposed to be there?
Does the Best Posts for August 2006 page still deserve a link in the navigation atop every blue page?
Which posts are you most - and least - proud of?
Of all the FPP posts on the blue that you've ever posted, which one are you most proud of? And which one do you wish you'd never, ever posted?
What happened to the Dawkins/Atheist post?
Forgive my ignorance, but what happened to the Dawkins/Atheist post? I was enjoying the article over lunch and when I popped back to the front page, it was gone. Was it a double?
Argument over NSFW
sgt.serenity seems a bit...hostile.
Undeleted double post.
Repeated posts in RSS
I've been seeing something strange on metafilter, for quite some time now. Posts from certain people appear over and over again in my RSS feed (about once an hour). I would think this was a flaw in my RSS reader (which is intraVnews, btw), but it is always the posts of the same small set of users. It seems to not be an effect on all posts, or on a random selection of posts, but on all posts from a very few posters (whose names I'll withhold as not to sound accusatory).
So, is this a spamming effort being effected by some users? For instance, if one were to periodically edit ones own posts, could one achieve the effect of getting into the RSS feed over and over? Or perhaps there's some other trick. I've corresponded with jessamyn on this, and probably been a pain (sorry). She recommended I contact mathowie (who I imagine reads this) and metatalk.

what's the protocol, if any, for a situation like this?

Semen-eating monkeys aren't welcome on MetaFilter.
You knew it was coming, and here it is! Is this really what Metafilter is about? Matt almost got run out of town by a howling mob for allowing ads for a popular site with scantily clad women, but videos of monkeys eating their own semen is A-OK and best of the web?
Is it proper etiquette to request topics for FFPs?
Is it proper ettiquete to request topics for FFPs? I would like one on Ettore Majorana and also one on Federico GarcĂa Lorca, the opera Ainadamar, deep song...
Use more inside more
I know you're eager to win the $30 for best post of the day, but please limit your linkstraganza to one paragraph on the front page. Paragraph breaks give the appearance of multiple posts on the front page and can cause confusion. Recent examples include this post and this post. If you absolutely must have more than one paragraph in your post, put the first on the front page, and the remainder in the first comment. Thanks in advance.
Best posts of the day
So, about this best post of the day thing.. are you announcing it on MeTa every day?
I think it would be kind of cool if you also highlighted it on Metafilter, ala AskMe favorited comments. That way, scrolling back a day or two on the front page I'll be able to tell the winning posts at a glance.

Post is messed up
Orthogonality's FPP is ferkocked. Looks like an extra " somewhere in a URL.
Since warez/piracy answers are removed, why aren't illegal drug posts removed?
This may be a dumb question. If I remember correctly people have had their posts removed for suggesting warez/piracy/etc. as an answer to a AskMe post. If that's so, why are posts suggesting that the user take illegal drugs allowed? This is not to say I am antipersonaldrugchoice, but I want to know why the discrepancy.
I am having trouble finding a post
I am having trouble finding a post to a cool web tool (java, maybe?) where you chose a parameter or some colors, then dragged your mouse around to make spline-y funky patterns. It seems it would have been especially useful to make cool mathy looking web backgrounds. I haven't the foggiest idea what search terms to even start with, and those I've tried have come up empty. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
