Would that FPP have been kosher?

Yesterday Scotty McClellen was the whipping boy in one of the funniest press conferences I've ever seen. The left-leaning political blog Crooks and Liars hosted a video of the best 6 minutes.

I was considering posting it, since I thought it was defintately the best thing I had seen on the web yesterday, but I didn't want to hear all the nannies scream "newsfilter" all day.

So what's the deal? Would that FPP have been kosher? And if not, what would have been the best way to share the link with the community who, if they hadn't seen it, would have probably also loved it?

This Greenlighters post looks like a hoax.

This Greenlighters post looks like a hoax. The domain name was registered the same day it was posted, and as far as I can tell, all 555 users and all 4089 posts materialised yesterday. Google doesn't turn up anything on them, and it's a single-link post.
Maybe Maxor just happened upon it the same day it came up, but it looks like he hoaxed it up.

Looking for another source for a broken link

Trying to find a copy of the video of the insecure/incompetent (student) weatherman from this thread. It's dead (and I searched thru many pages of compfused). Anyone got a copy/link?

new posters big posts

ericbop, RockCorpse, you guys are both new but three paragraphs (389 words) / five paragraphs is a little large for a post.

Two unsafe posts need warnings

Two FPP's on the front page need a warning for loud music and auto-download. Stupidsexyflanders' Expressionless Girl has incredibly loud and irritating embedded music and indices Widget of mass destruction, the first link downloads a widget to your computer without warning.

Both should have had a warning about the links.

Watch your fucking language

Please leave the NSFW words [note: link NSFW... duh] inside a thread... and mark the thread NSFW. The F-word does not belong on the front page of MeFi.

RSS feeds for comments and tags? Maybe per user?

I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.

How to deal with partisan posts on MeFi.

Metafilter is not Wikipedia. There's no expectation of neutrality here. So instead of telling the poster to get his own blog, why not read the links, then add more links and observations from your own perspective. That's why they call them comments.

Can we have a 'via' field on the posting page?

Minor feature request: a via field on the blue's posting page. As part of the redesign, I'd love to see an optional field for including a "via" link. Two reasons: (1) it would encourage posters to acknowledge the source of the link, if applicable; and (2) it would allow some interesting statistics to be generated from the aggregation of via data.

Where's my newsfilter

The silence on the blue is deafening. Do you suppose if MeFi had existed when Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic solo, or man landed on the moon there would have been such fear about being accused of NewsFilter with a FPP? Even No. 1 posts in the grey about it. Is this how it must be?

Discussion of y2karl's posting style (Feb. 2005)

Discussion of y2karl's small quote posting style in this thread got me thinking. I wonder what a pie chart or Venn diagram showing a breakdown of his contributions to MeFi into quotes, small quotes, alt-text quotes, his own words, etc. would look like.

These aren't really good posts.

Old threads link usernames to posts, not users

Bug: old threads have the poster username linking to the thread with the same number as their usernumber. Example (working). Example (nonworking). Only in the post; the username links in comments are fine.

subscribe to the comment threads

So, I'm addicted to Ask, aka the green.

What I really want to do is subscribe to the comment threads - when a new post occurs, I want someone to run into my office (my home, my bedroom, whatever) and shout up and down the answer is here. Or there was a followup question. (6 new) just doesn't help - especially if a thread a scrolled off page.

Or it could be a little link on the homepage (customized for me for threads I'm watching/participating in.)

It's another idea for rating threads/users!

It's another idea for rating threads/users!

Dig this. On Everything2, they have the concept of cools. If you're very good, you can get a cool, which you can then assign to a post.

Rather than rating all threads, users, etc. Maybe everyone could get 1 gold star to spend every month (week, year, lifetime). And gold-starred posts could get a special billing?

Click meter?

You know what would be cool? A click count or popularity meter indicator on each FP thread, showing how many people took a look at it. [MI]

FPPs as unordered lists in html

Matt, could you make the FPPs be unordered lists in the HTML? I want to be able to use the site with elinks in graphical mode. Just about everything else is kickass, and it loads lightning fast, but all the FPPs end up scrunched together and are very difficult to eyeball-parse. I think this would be a Good Thing, not just for links users, but for general browser cross-compatibility.

more than five minutes and a couple visits to the dictionary

The onology of mumbo jumbo FPPs
You know, if it takes more than five minutes and a couple visits to the dictionary to figure out what a post is about, it's not a very effective post. Am I just an idiot? I'd say one in ten posts lately is either so esoteric or so cryptically phrased as to exclude most mefi readers from it's hidden delights.

I ask because a certain recent thread which got some attention webwide remains on the www.metafiler.com page.

No votes to remove posts from Metafilter?

I don't know if it has been proposed before (I don't generally read MetaTalk), but THIS LINK makes me yearn for some kind of "no" vote system where if a post gets a certain number or percentage of "no" it gets taken off the front page. It wouldn't be necessarily easy to implement or tune, but it would help. It would also help remove FPP's that TURN OUT TO BE TOTAL BUNK.
