Guidelines for MeFi vs Sportsfilter

With World Cup fanaticism one week away (for some of us ever present), what are guidelines for Metafilter posts (eg vs Sportsfilter posts) ? Thanks.

It's hard to avoid double posts when you're travelling

Trip Observation #3 : I don't know if others share this problem, but I have now learned the hard way to think twice before posting to Mefi while traveling (now being 2 for 2 on deleted double posts during the past 4 days, even after searching prior to posting.) So much happens on Mefi in short time periods that searching is not enough, I need to also carefully read any posts and comments I have missed, and also search, before posting from the road. So apologies for the inconvenience to Matt , to the private emailer kindly alerting me, to commenters publicly noting it, to readers re-reading old stuff, to anyone else I have forgotten.

Mefi inserts itself into daily life

Trip Note #2 - Metafilter has inserted a new "mental discipline" into offline activities. On this trip to Europe, every time I speak with someone, read the foreign press, watch TV, etc, I often ask myself : how relevant would subject be in Metafilter's context, what would commentary thread look like. It certainly sharpens conversations. (I think Max Weber called it "unintended consequences of routinized social action") Weird symptom, or do others experience the same?

Do you also skip the posts?

I'm traveling far from home for first time since 9-11, and when I visit Metafilter, I find myself every time going straight to read member's comments, without first (in some cases ever) visiting the posted link. Is this shallow of me, or a simple craving for community spirit? Have others experienced this?
