I had the idea, inspired by the username of none other than one of our new mods, who seems to have their hands full spearheading new anti-racism initiatives on the site, for a seed/plant swap. What say you all? [more inside]
Happy weekend Mefites! This weekend I'm curious to hear your little observations -- maybe about the weather, or new things you've noticed in your living space, or your pet's personal habits, or minor mysteries unfolding outside your windows. [more inside]
There's a venting thread, but maybe you want to share a surprising good thing that has happened despite the terrible situation in the world right now. [more inside]
Happy weekend, Mefites! This weekend jessamyn says: What's growing? Your garden? Your kids? Your hair? Your aggravation at your friends and neighbors? Your "What I'm gonna do when this is over" list? Your dream journal. Let's talk about growth! [more inside]
You know what's weird right now? Besides, like, everything? Food. Lots of routines are disrupted, lots of supply lines and food-sourcing habits have gotten all sideways. So: what's going on with your fooding? How's the whole eating thing? Any happy discoveries or rediscoveries? Any weird surprises? Any big shortage headaches? Any horrible cooking failures? Snacking surprises? Foodly frustrations? Can you buy literally any yeast? Get it out, let's talk all kinds of food stuff, let's do a whole roundup of where everybody's at.
Happy weekend, Mefites! I'm in search of some nice things to idly think about that aren't in my immediate view. I'd like to see a wikipedia page you like, of something that isn't in your home. [more inside]
It is March 39th and time for the latest check-in thread. As previously () this is for actual news, updates, personal experiences, and more mutual support from and to people dealing with this virus in their daily lives. All hail the mods for continuing to provide this sanctuary for us, and good health to readers and commenters alike. How is one doing?
As the Highlander always says: “There can be only one.” Are you team cake or team pie? Discuss. [more inside]
Lately I've seen many a fine recipe, sewing pattern and/or general quarantine project idea gracing various COVID threads on the blue, green, and grey. I thought it would be nice to have someplace central to store and chat about that sort of thing. So, are you doing something amazing or hilarious or at least vaguely interesting with your home-bound time? Building something new, cooking or baking something awesome (or at least awesomely terrible?) Reading or watching something that makes you happy? Whatever you're doing with yourself to make your lockdown time a little less stressful, share it here.
Trying to run with a regular April Fools gag feels super weird this year, so...let's just have an indoor scavenger hunt! Can you find THE ROUNDEST THING in your home? Find a thing that needs finding, post a picture and/or description of it in the thread, suggest something else for folks to look for! [more inside]
Regarding the recent one-man Godzilla film that was posted over on the blue, MCMikeNamara commented:
If this was the sole artifact left to explain humanity, it would be impossible to truly explain without the cultural context, but I honestly don't care and would happily nominate it to be the sole artifact to explain humanity.<>>Has me thinking what the rest of the community would choose, so let's open it up to debate. What would you choose as the sole artifact left to explain humanity? I'm thinking that MCMikeNamara is on the right track with this one-man Godzilla film. Stay safe everyone.
Do you have an instrument at home? Or a voice? And a camera or a microphone? Willing to upload to Youtube or Facebook or Vimeo or Soundcloud or your provider of choice and link to it here? Better to be at home sharing music than to be at home not sharing music!
I'm finding art is a really useful thing for putting my brain somewhere other than *waves hands around floridly* for a while. And I know a lot of folks on MetaFilter make art, or have made art, or would like to make art. So, hey: let's make some art! Good art, bad art, first-timer art. Let's make stuff, and talk about stuff you'd like to make, and share what you're making, and share resources and guides and inspiration and so on. [more inside]
The Covid Card Swap (previously discussed here)is a go! If you want to send cards/postcards/notes of encouragement and connection to other Mefites, follow the simple instructions inside. [more inside]
Many local organizations are developing mutual aid organizations of neighbors helping neighbors get their basic needs met (grocery shopping, phone calls for wellness/connection, etc.). I'm working locally in my physical neighborhood, but I consider metafilter my neighborhood as well. Would others be interested in sharing their needs and seeing if anyone in the community can meet them? For example: I have toilet paper to share (as long as you don't mind the recycled eucalyptus sort) and can do grocery shopping for vulnerable mefites in the L.A. area. If you're very low on tp I can mail you some and also toss in some local fruit from our backyard tree. I could use: if you're making fabric masks, I could really use them for my aunt (ICU nurse). She's running low and I'm working extra hours at work (I know, I'm lucky to be working) so I don't have time to sew myself.
I'm playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game was just released and it's available on the Nintendo Switch. It seems like everyone is playing these days. Let's talk about our islands/towns. What fruit did you end up getting? There are five possibilities (not counting coconuts): apples, cherries, peaches, pears, and oranges. If you're up for it, let's share our Nintendo Switch Friend codes so we can visit each other's islands/towns. This is a super chill game and it makes me happy. If you have the opportunity, consider picking it up. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Happy crafting, farming, shopping, & exploring friendos.
One of the Card Club members suggested a Covid-19 card swap event. I think this is a good idea, and wanted to bring it to the larger Mefi community to see what the interest level is. This would be like the winter holiday or Valentine's Day card swaps, where people are assigned to small groups, and you send a card to the people within that group. As far as I know, there are no covid-specific greeting cards, so these would be pretty free-form -- postcards, "hang in there" cards, short messages of connection and encouragement, wishes for good health, etc. Thoughts/opinions?
I can already tell I'm going to get hungry for more human interaction. Inspired by stuff like the "Quarantine Cooking" article by mefi's own beijingbrown and the article about Japanese "drinking online" and Chinese "cloud raves," I'm wondering if we could do some fun social stuff as a group that would make things less lonely. [more inside]
Do you cope with your anxiety by playing phone games? I totally cope with my anxiety by playing phone games. Tell me your favorite phone games, ideally for Android (my system) but I'm down with iPhone and I'm also down with desktop/console games! [more inside]
Feel free to share something good. Something happy. This is a space for positive vibes. Reminder to be kind to others and yourself. Love and good thoughts being sent your way. Stay calm, be careful, and remember to practice good hygiene. :-)
Happy weekend, Mefites! This weekend, Bella Donna says: I experienced an unexpected moment of grace while visiting my father in Colorado in his nursing home. Actually, I experienced two now that I think of it. I would like to suggest [...] Saturday MetaTalk kick off topic be about moments of grace, unexpected or otherwise. [more inside]
For today's Metatalktail Hour topic, we want to know what's the secret in your secret sauce? Do you have a special dish with a top-secret ingredient that puts it over the top? Tell, tell, tell! [more inside]
Happy weekend, Mefites! This weekend, jacquilynne wondered what games people are enjoying on Android phones lately. I'm also wondering what other kinds of games you've all been into -- boardgames, cardgames, rpg's, console or pc games. Even physical games you play with your actual body, if that's how you roll. [more inside]
This weekend, Tehhund wants to hear about mixups and cases of mistaken identity. Has anyone ever mistaken you for someone else, or vice versa? Or maybe your email address or username got confused with someone else's so you got messages intended for them? What happened? [more inside]
Hello weekend Mefites! This week for Metatalktails, I'm thinking about plants. Plants are pretty great. Do you have any recent plants in your life, or memorable plant facts/stories? [more inside]
This weekend, I'm thinking about little ways that technology is cool. Yes there are lots of negatives about technology and we talk about that a lot on this site... but alongside that, there are a lot of cool things. Is there any tech thing we have that strikes you that way, where you just think, hey that's pretty amazing? [more inside]
Hey folks, time for a quarterly update on how the site's doing financially, and a reminder that the direct financial support of MetaFilter's membership and readers is fundamental to keeping this place operational. Your help supporting this community is vital, and appreciated. [more inside]
Hello weekend! Tonight I’m wondering, do you feel the magic of the office supply aisle at the store? Is there a particular stationery item that speaks to you? Do you covet fancy pens or have a rubber band ball? Let’s hear it. [more inside]

Happy weekend Mefites! Come in and tell us how things are with you. Also wondering, what are your favorite cold weather or hot weather or special occasion beverages?
This is a big week of logistics in my household; a lot of stuff needs to get done, moved, cleaned, put away, taken out, packed, wrapped, boxed, swept, etc. Minor headaches but also sort of enjoyable getting things done like that. Are there household chores you secretly enjoy or have a secret talent for? [more inside]
It seems to me that the change has been a positive good for Metafilter. Change being the doing away with the Megathreads. Even the sidebar has stopped moving. What are your thoughts?
Like many people, ninazer0 has had a tough time lately, and requests fellow Mefites to please share their "silliest, most pants-wetting, side-splitting moments" for Metatalktails this week. Come on in with your silly or funny stories or just to say hi. [more inside]
This week, for Metatalktails, signal suggests: name one or more things that you love and none or few other people know about or appreciate. Basically, a little thing you hold close to your heart. [more inside]
I'm increasingly concerned about the effects of insistently negative comments on MetaFilter. [more inside]
For some Mefites it's Thanksgiving today, which can mean travel and family etc (or not). For everyone else it's just midweek. So here's an open chit-chat thread where we can celebrate what we're thankful for, or take refuge and gripe about traffic and family, or alternatively, celebrate its not being a holiday and gripe about regular midweek nonholiday stuff. I really like the word "blustery", do you have a word you like?
This weekend's topic is from J.K. Seazer: What art or other self-expression did you do as a kid? Angsty poetry? Steamy slash fiction? Garage bands? Cartoons? Minecraft servers? Tell us all about it!
Good weekend, Mefites! For Metatalktails this week I'm wondering, have you gone back to basics in something lately? That is, something you'd been doing in the newfangled high tech way, but stopped, and went back to the old way of doing it? [more inside]
This week for Metatalktails, I want to hear about some little triumphs. Like when you finally got to use that thing you'd set up for just this occasion. What are your stories of a time when preparation really paid off, or a plan came together in a satisfying way? [more inside]
Who is up for sending more cards for the holidays? The link for the 2019 MeFi Holiday Card Exchange is within! [more inside]

Fizz suggests: let's have a thread where we can share our Halloween pumpkin carving photos! [more inside]
My dearest mefites: back in August, I asked for the favor of encouragement from the community to get through a difficult exam. I’m so pleased to report that I PASSED STEP 2 CS! I get to graduate from medical school this December! [more inside]
Here's a first quarterly update on where we're at with site revenue and expenses. We've made some progress from where we were this summer; your help in funding the site is a fundamental part of that. [more inside]
We're updating some site documents today to better reflect contemporary MetaFilter. Today's updates include the New User pages that potential new community members move through when signing up, the site's core guidelines page, and a new document discussing common microaggressions and being mindful about the impact of dominant-culture dynamics on a diverse membership. I'll talk in more detail about all that below the fold. [more inside]
Can I just say that the Blue has been amazing lately and I've been having a lot of fun with the diversity of posts. And by diversity, I can't even begin to describe, but if you've been watching the Blue you know what I mean. Thank you, all of you, for your posts! I'm sure I'm not the only member who has felt delighted by something unexpected... So yay!
It's a little over a month since the State of the Site post where I talked about our current revenue shortfall, and as part of a goal of moving toward more regular financial updates I wanted to give a quick snapshot of where we are now. [more inside]
Hello, mefites. I could use a favor: messages of encouragement. Details inside. [more inside]
