Why can't you love your fellow man and be selfless, without needing to believe in a giant invisible wizard in the sky? This statement was attacked, defended, reconnected with the topic at hand, and was further clarified and apologized for by its author. But as of a few minutes ago, it no longer exists. This, my friends, is Chewbacca, and Chewbacca does not make sense.

'All' tags on AskMetafilter

A couple of days back, I saw a page that listed 'all' tags ever used on Ask.MetaFilter. Clicking the tags didn't take me anywhere (they weren't linked, I think) but the page did exist. Is it still available and will the tags be linked anytime soon ?

Post to AskMefi on my behalf?

Post to AskMefi on my behalf? I just asked a non-urgent question about tipping, but I should have asked a question about oil heat. I'm scheduled to sign a lease tomorrow, and I would really like some answers about heat before I take responsibility for buying a season's worth of oil. I'm brand new to MeFi and slipped up with the 1/week restriction; next time I'll make sure to post my urgent question first. Thanks to anyone willing to help. (My email is in my profile)

Request: a way to mark our questions as resolved.

I'd love to see a "conclusion" feature to many of the askme questions. For instance, even if it's months later, I could go into a question I asked and mark it "concluded" and give a quick summary of what happened when I followed the advice.

Once someone marks something "concluded" it would go to its own "conclusions" RSS feed, which we could subscribe to if we want to know "the rest of the story" on many of the questions asked.

Too much information and not enough privacy? Where does one draw the line?

To etiquette/policy: How bad is it to have posted a full name with some work history while asking AskMe for help in finding that person?

this may seem trivial, but could you update dns records for metafilter.org to include ask.metafilter.org--->ask.metafilter.com

Previous and Next Pony

Pony: when browsing the archives of ask.me the navigation for pages says next page and previous page. Could it be changed to older posts and newer posts? Also the color of links in "best answers" is the same as the answer.

Pony: Title guidelines on the 'Post a New Question' page

Why not explain on the AskMe "Post a New Question" page that the Headline/Title will *not* show up on the main page? I have seen lots of questions in the past where the Headline/Title contains the question and the question text lacks context and looks odd on its own. Example. I think a few clarifying words about how visitors will not see the Headline/Title when browsing AskMe's main pages will help people word their questions more appropriately.

Pony request: Highlight best answers and original questioner

I would love to see a feature on AskMeFi that similar to the way best answers become highlighted, so does the person who asked the questions subsequent comments. Maybe highlighted in a different color? This would be helpful because I often find myself looking for the posters subsequent comments on whether they want to refine what their question was and so on.

AskMe Followup

Can we get some closure on this "mystery nautical apparatus" AskMe thread? I'm dying to know what this thing is. Did any of the commenters get an answer from their emails to the Galway port people?

is this the best we can do?

I took a wee break from AskMefi because whilst I enjoyed asking and answering questions, I thought it such a bore that some users took advantage of the forum just to voice their half-baked, belligerent opinions that really did nothing to answer the question in hand.
So then I come back, ask a perfectly reasonable question, and five fresh fish implies I'm an "asshat red light running asswipe." Wah, wah, wah - for sure. But is this the best we can do?

Is the site over-moderated?

Good thread -- but be careful....it might get pulled.

When people are scared that AskMe threads they like might just be disappeared, perhaps it might be time to consider whether the site is being over-moderated?

Sock-puppet alert

Sock-puppet alert. joshuak asks a question and then logs in as alter-ego fearandloathing to ask another question. However, he forgot to change his identity back when he went back into the first thread to bitch that no one was telling him how to get a $40/hour job across the street from his house.

Ask Metafilter's FAQs in a sidebar

Just an observation: the question which DSLR to buy comes around so often on the green, with the same answers usually (understandably, but predictably) given, that I'm beginning to think there ought to be a sidebar of such frequently asked questions (or maybe mathowie ought to sign up for an Adorama affiliate program).

Green card question becomes a morality referendum

I read this as question for help on legal matters (I know...thats a separate topic) but people seem to be interpreting it as a morality question with statements such as "Why do you think a person with such low ethical standards would make for a positive contributor to the US " - and its starting to derail the thread.

Followup etiquette on closed AskMe posts

Don't get me wrong -- I want to know how stuff on AskMe turns out. I don't think MeTa is the ideal place for that, though. What about allowing askers to post a followup in their own threads, even if they'd been closed & archived, which would put that thread on a new page, like the "fantastic posts" page we have now, which could be called "resolutions" or "how'd it turn out" or some such.

we bought a 1999 Subaru Forester

Back in December I asked for vehicle recommendations, and I just wanted to follow up: we bought a 1999 Subaru Forester, based on the words here and of a friend of our who owns an Outback. What it all came down to was good value, great safety, and even though I paid more than I wanted to I'm happy with this step up instead of a step sideways into a RAV4 or a junkier, older vehicle. Thanks!

Answerers jumping the gun

While it's very nice to, for once, see an answer-poster own up to
"Crap. I posted my brilliant secret before reading the whole post. Really sorry.
I guess I got caught up a, "Holy crap I can contribute trip". Really, really sorry, and I have nothing useful to say.
Dammit."
there are another 106 times that I've seen answerers who never realized that the [mi] should have forestalled their answers.
Any ideas? Perhaps, including a "Did you read the [more inside] at the top of the page?" reminder?

When is it ok to pile on a poster?

Regarding this question. What's the rule of thumb here? Is it ok to pile on a poster and not answer his question if he's a minor? If his parents are possibly rich? If he lives in LA? If you don't like his attitude? If you're mad because you had a shitty car when you were 16, or even -- GASP -- no car at all, and this kid totally doesn't even deserve one, much less a NEW one?

Anonymous Replies for AskMe For Several Hours?

Anonymous posting: time-limited cookies to enable anonymous to reply to their own threads for N hours? Perhaps tied to logins? It seems like the "anonymous" nom de plume really only needs to be a setting that is applied when a thread is marked as such and the original poster is replying. Since most of these questions are for personal, medical, or other advice that usually need more input (perhaps to triangulate its position), it seems useful.

Sometimes I need more then one question a week

Sometimes I need more then one question a week...

I'm thinking a feature would be nice where you could ask "4 questions a month" in stead of once a week.. or have unused questions (say you odnt ask a question on MeFi for a month) that would be "banked"?

alternately, I was thinking of "donate a question" or "extra questions dispensed" based on being selected as best answer?

AskMe causes problems when posting code

Problems Posting Code To Ask yet again.

I really wish AskMeFi handled code better. As in, handled HTML, JavaScript, Perl, whatever, with linebreaks and indenting preserved. Some people are smart enough to use the PRE tag, but they still need to escape the HTML brackets, and their code gets extra linebreaks added.

When I need to post code I pre-process it with a script now but the average person isn't that obsessive.

The "regular expressions are overkill" guy has a problem in his code, please note, as does the "screw the dom" guy.
