the real helpful folks

On our inividual profile pages, it says how many times we've posted to MetaFilter and MetaTalk, but it doesn't yet mention AskMeta. That way we know who the real helpful folks are.

Please answer the actual question, not what you think should have been the question

AskMe policy proposal: "Please answer the actual question, not what you think should have been the question".

For instance here, crunchland seems to think the question is "what's a good approach to picking colors", whereas namespan is saying "fireworks used to have a feature, now it doesn't, what can I do". This happens all the time. People ask how to fix something on a computer running System A, and the answer is switch to System B. People ask about Anti-virus apps, and are told not to use them and just practice safe-computing. It's a small peeve, but the added noise is not appreciated, especially when you actually care about the answers.

I can't post a comment to Ask MetaFilter

I can't post a comment to Ask MetaFilter. When I hit preview it shows nothing under Comment Preview. I'm using Mozilla 1.3.1.

Is it illegal to post information here that would enable someone else to do something illegal?

Matt doesn't want it but it seems a bit harmless to me. Is it illegal to post information here that would enable someone else to do something illegal? Bearing in mind that any possible crime in this case would take place in Portugal. What could happen to Matt+MeFi if we put up enabling information here? Any lawyers?

Ask the damn question on the front page

Ask the damn question on the front page, already! A few recent examples of a growing Ask MetaFilter trend that's starting to annoy me. I'd move for a few guidelines: 1. Ask a question on the front page. 2. Make some effort in striking a balance between salience and brevity on the front page.

Weird Character Entity Behavior

If you include a character entity in text for preview then it is displayed correctly and appears (as the appropriate character) in the edit area. However, when you click post, the character is converted to "?" (ie. posting character entities is OK, but if they're previewed then they're converted to the equivalent extended character, which is not accepted by "post").

Do we need AskMeTalk?

Shouldn't MetaTalk, recently flooded (and, imho, diluted) by AskMe queries, be about MetaFilter alone and AskMe have a reflective sidekick of its own? [More inside.]

Indexing AskMe

Is anyone already thinking ahead to indexing AskMe so that all the dog questions or MP3 player questions or digital camera questions can be seen together, both as an aid and as a way to keep down too many duplicative posts?

I am far too lazy to do it myself, of course, but figure one of you spiffy computer-geek types might be thinking along these lines already and have something for us.

AskMe preview confusion

When getting ready to submit a Q to AskMe, the far right button says "Preview Link", which might prove to be slightly misleading to newbies as AskMe is not required de jure or de facto to have any links. Recommend the button be changed to "Preview Questions."

Also, when looking at my most previous posts, I can find my MeTa and MeFi posts but no direct link to my AskMe posts in my profile (hey don't act like you don't do it). Might be good if we make the posts more accessable via user page.

Gun control debate in AskMe

Why are people debating gun control in this thread? It seems as if it was a simple request. It did not seem like there was an invitation or even suggestion for a gun control debate.

Askme comment callout

BlueStone, what an unfriendly (to put it mildly) response! So tell me, do you ever go to the doctor or take prescription drugs? Seems like you ought to be the captain of your own ship and just let your body strengthen its own defenses instead of using such a crutch.

RSS for AskMe

The MeFi RSS feed works great. While I can envision the reason(s) for ommitting this feature for metaTalk, wouldn't it make sense to have on for AskMeFi ?

just trying to understand the distinction

Since botching policy on a recent post (asking about why people smoke) and being promptly deleted, I'm left scratching my head about why this post went unquestioned. I'm not complaining, and I don't think the thread should be deleted, I'm just trying to understand the distinction so I don't get my own posts deleted again in the future.

Link to AskMe

Ask MetaFilter is currently only available to those of us who come to MetaTalk. Since it's probably the best thing on MeFi since the sliced-bread thread, wouldn't it be an elementary courtesy to extend the service (and information) to the blue-only crowd? Is it really so marvellous that it deserves to be kept for us aficionados alone? Fwiw, I think we could use the extra minds and souls. Why not include a link (plus sidebar mention) on the main page? Or is it meant to be an insiders' secret? This, imho, is just wrong!

We have been good so far

I nominate this thread as the point in AskMe's development cycle where we start giving in to to one-liners, boy-zone silliness, and the usual MetaFilter noise. We've been very good in Ask MetaFilter so far. - On topic. Helpful rather than chatty. Signal rather than noise. Do we want to allow this sort of thing? If so, how can we put limits on it? The question asked sort of invites grade school antics. Do we blame the poster, or the users who gave in to temptation?

If AskMe goes the way of MetaFilter, there isn't much point in having two sites.

How about allowing anonymous questions on AskMe?

Posting something in Blue or here should have a definite link to a persona set up here. But a question? There are some questions we want asked but not have anyone know we asked them. What about an anonymous possibility?

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi?

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi? Is it because it's new, or is it something else? Don't get me wrong, I like a measure of snark & biting wit. But everyone here is so damn nice (which is why it was a great holiday present to us, Matt) that I think I have entered George Costanza's opposite day. Will there be any spillover?

AskMe Front Page

Given that Ask Metafilter had 40 questions posted yesterday (more than the number of posts to Metafilter proper, in fact), would it be possible to see more than 25 questions on the front page at a time? It seems kind of silly to have to go to the archives for questions posted earlier during the same day. Adjunct question: how's the server holding up under the onslaught of posts?

Making MeFi Experts

Perhaps we should make Ask MetaFilter a Clydesdale instead of a pony: if user profiles included a means of categorizing one's expertise, we'd be able to have Ask MetaFilter automatically email appropriate questions to the experts; we'd be able to hunt down an expert for 1:1 communication; we'd be able to create some sort of synergy.

meta points to askme

Ask Metafilter is Born

Ask MetaFilter is born. Feel free to pose a question to other members here. Obviously those of a technical nature are going to meet with the most success, but questions outside of that realm are also good too.

I'll delete dumb questions or those that prove to be nothing but flamewars and/or goof-off fests, and if this section takes off I'll be adding more features to it (like rating what the best answer was) and move it into its own area.

Site linked in askme is 404, and I can't find the askme!

Ok, maybe I'm just an idiot...or my google fu is way off...but does anyone remember a post in the last couple of weeks that went to a satire site for a sensual surrogate love lump thing? It was a silly site, and I was going to use it in a column, but the site is now totally 404 and I'm wondering if anyone has a picture of the lump in their cache that you could send me? I would ask in the thread...but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

spawn-of-metafilter advice site

How about a spawn-of-metafilter advice site? A site where mefites can go to give and get advice and suggestions regarding life's conundrums - technical, personal, financial, etc.? Most of us know a thing or two about something or the other, and most of us need a hand (or a shoulder, or other assorted body parts) on occasion. Who you gonna call?

Do any of you "philter" people have the inclination and bandwidth for an idea like this (Wendell? Metalifter?)? Would any of the rest of you participate? And... did I just commit metacide?

I think AskMetaFilter would really be a great site, said Jessamyn

Perhaps there should be a sub-site of metafilter where one could post topics without links when they need advice. There have been countless times I would have greatly valued the opinions of metafilter users when it comes to buying technology products, and advice with work and relationships. Sure you can always find some related link to throw in to make the question legitimate by mefi rules... but that's cheating.

Threads Have Titles Now?

Hey - if this isn't a new feature, or if I missed a memo, please tell me, but does each thread have it's own title now? I only ask because when I just thought better of posting to the "pancakes" thread and saw "Prattling On About Pancakes" up in the title bar, it startled me a wee bit, and now I see that each thread is similarly titled. New thing?

'what kind of music do you like'

snarkiness aside, we've got 1, 2, 3, 4 'what kind of music do you like' threads popping up in the past three days. sure these threads get lots of comments, but they're not what this site is about. and when they propogate like this, it scares me. does one such post beget others? and can we, as a community, do anything about it? do we want to do anything about it... or do we love these threads too much to let go?

is there a vaccine for your favorite X?

We seem to be in the midst of another "what's your favorite X" mini-epidemic: a link which varies from interesting to trivial, followed by an invitation to opine. This time it's sandwiches, beverages, newspapers, snacks, arcade games, amusing childhood beliefs. I won't bother to criticize--we've covered that ground many times here already. But I think it's interesting how when these things happen, it only takes one precipitating post to generate several others, seemingly on a "yeah! And hey, what about this?" principle. What's your favorite favorite-X question?

Web Hosting Question

Not really happy with Burlee, so I'm looking for a new web host. I've read the Web Hosting Talk forums - a bit too much "noise" there. (And yes, I've read this posting on Metatalk.)

Specially, I'm looking for a UNIX based host that will allow me to host several domains (including my weblog) with one account. (Separate domains/urls, no URL redirects, sub-domain forwarding, or other database tricks.) Not necessarily looking for a cheapie "unlimited bandwidth" type of host, just reliable and up-front (unlike Burlee).

So anyone care to offer another round of web hosting recommendations (or warnings)?

Ask MetaFilter.

Ask MetaFilter.

There have been more than a few times when I wanted to one of those "Does anyone know...?" type of questions to the community, and I couldn't think of an appropriate place for it. Asking a question on the front page seemed like a dumb idea (and one that would open me to ridicule), and I couldn't think of a proper place to put it on MetaTalk. So how 'bout a link on the front page that sez Ask MetaFilter. Click on it, you can ask a question ("Does anyone know...?"), and generate a discussion.

Granted, it could be abused by smartasses and idiots, but I think the community on the whole would swiftly punish actions like that.

There are a bunch of smart people here with very different backgrounds and educations, and I think something like this could be very cool and simple to implement.

What does a programmer/web designer needs to succeed in the current market?

even before i knew about matt's having been
laid off, i was planning on posting this to metatalk; it now has added applicability, though.

i need a job, but i have no experience in all of this crap i see postings about: websphere, sybase, etc. so here's my question: what do you guys all think that a programmer / web designer needs to succeed in the current market? any good pointers on where to learn or what to read about the junk?
