Go on, spill it.
Everyone is most likely familiar with the Profile page's "About" section explanatory text:
"What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say 'wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?' Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.'
I am curious if anybody's user name actually WAS inspired by an email from a long-lost friend. [more inside]
Hiring a new tech person, revisiting expectations
I mentioned yesterday in the post about pb moving on that we are, in turn, hiring a new tech person. We're looking both within and outside the MetaFilter membership, so please put the job listing out there! But this is also a big transition for the site, so I want to talk a bit about my, and your, expectations as we go through this process. [more inside]

After nine years of fixing bugs and granting pony requests, pb is taking his leave as MetaFilter's technical wizard. Come inside and wish him well! [more inside]

Amazon referral links in FPPs
So, today I posted about the upcoming new Santana album. It's amazing. It comes out next week. It is available for preorder on Amazon and I have preordered it. Also was a Carly Rae Jepsen link about a single off her new album. It was amazing. I preordered it. Should we, when we compose posts like these, include a link to an Amazon order page so MeFites who want to also purchase these things can give MetaFilter a bit of a kickback? Or is that too commercial?
115: Boaty McBoatface, with barchan
Coasting in fashionably late, it's Ep #115 of Best Of The Web, wherein jessamyn and I chat with the geologirrific barchan about dunes, oil rigs, industrial accidents, her dog who also makes a couple cameos, and all kinds of MetaFiltery stuff. This show covers March 3 through April 7 and runs for just under two hours. [more inside]
Our Belgian mefites need a hug
Yesterday I received confirmation of my hotel booking in Brussels for a conference to be held soon. This morning we wake to discover that already there have been 2 explosions at the airport and a further one at the metro station near the European institutions. Now, we're on hold.
Starting this thread to ask all mefites in the vicinity are ok.
Should Debates (and other unique events) be diverted to Fanfare?
Currently things like political debates (and similar unique events, such as Apple announcements) tend to play out in related threads on the Blue. Since that just adds to (usually) already-long threads, wouldn't it make sense to require that dedicated posts be made on the Purple? (I'm not alone in thinking so.)

114: I Say It's Spinach, And To Hell With It
Josh and Jessamyn pull another solo-bolo and talk about MetaFilter, caffiene sources, having a relaxed attitude toward life, and having to put on pants sometimes. This episode cover Feb 3rd through March 3rd and runs a little under two hours. [more inside]
Antivirus won't let me connect with Blue or Green
This is the only way my ESET NOD32 Antivirus program will let me communicate with MF right now. Whenever I try to open something on MeFi or AskMeFi -- or the Contact a Moderator page -- I get a notice that the connection has been terminated because of a JS/ScrInject.B trojan.
I was doing fine reading the past 24 hours of MeFi until just before posting this. Can anyone confirm there's a problem, or has my antivirus program gotten out of hand?

113: It's Been A Deluge, with griphus
This month, me and Jess are kibitzing with the charming griphus, who is almost certainly the first podcast guest ever to not have his account active at the time, but don't worry: he's just resting up for a late entry into the US presidential race. We chatter for about an hour and forty five minutes, covering everything from January 5th to February 2nd. [more inside]

This post ruled
I would like to call attention to this post, which links to a single comment in a youtube video thread, about one person's experience watching a teenage sword-wielder doing "moves" to a Sabbath song in 1979. I think it's a stellar post. [more inside]
112: FUCK ALL THE REST OF THE LETTERS
For the first time in either the history of the Best of the Web podcast or maybe just the year 2016, we're going all out with four people on the podcast! Four J's, even: joining me and Jessamyn are long-time MeFites not_on_display (Jim!) and churl (Jesse!), as we talk about the month in MeFi, the Best Post contest, and the dark Jungian substrate that lies beneath the fragile shared fiction we call "reality". Also some bathroom stuff. With all this personality bopping around, we're ringing in the new year with a hefty 2 hours of show this time, covering December 1st through January 4th. [more inside]
Happy New Year, Metafilter
Happy New Year to you all, may it be better than this one in each and every way, and may you all continue to make the awesome posts and comments that make this place what it is!
You asked for miracles - I give you The Washington. Post.
"Quonsmas organizers — this year there are three: julen, a participant since 2007 and volunteer since 2009, articseal and phunniemee — keep Quonsmas running through spreadsheets and hard work. They ensure it’s an egalitarian swap, of gifts between $10-20 made between two people regardless of how long they’ve been Metafilter members or how often they post (though Metafilter membership is a requirement for joining)." Nice writeup in The Washington Post's blog, The Intersect. [more inside]

Hiring a part-time MetaFilter moderator
Happy news: we're hiring. Specifically, a part-time, mostly-weekends US daytime moderator to help add a little wiggle room to the current daytime schedule. Take a look at the Jobs post, and drop us an application if it sounds like a good fit. [more inside]
Metafilter gets a mention in The Guardian

Dead MetaFilter Radio
So, I tried to share the MetaFilter Radio app with someone recently and found it was no longer in the App store. And I tried to run my MetaFilter Radio app and it was an utter failure.
Are there plans to update this and continue to make it useful and fun, or was it a one-off project and is now dead?
110: Stealin' Lincoln, with Eyebrows McGee
It's a short podcast! By our standards, which is to say only an hour and twenty minutes or so. Jessamyn and I are joined by the midwest's own Eyebrows McGee as we chatter semi-hurriedly about a bunch of stuff from Metafilter and also Abe Lincoln's corpse. We cover October 8th-ish through November 2. [more inside]
109: Rhymes With Picard, feat. Greg Nog
For this episode, Jessamyn and I are joined by none other than Greg Nog, who chats about cats and puppets and moving from one city with "louis" in the name to another, plus lots of great MetaFilter stuff. We cover September 9th through October 8th, all in a shockingly lean hour and three quarters. [more inside]
On Sept. 11, 2001, there was no Facebook, no Twitter, not even a MySpace
…but there was a MetaFilter. Will Oremus gave us a shout-out five days ago in a short blog post for Slate.
Out of the Blue, episode #2: On emotional labor, with Jess Zimmerman
On July 13th, the writer Jess Zimmerman posted “Where’s My Cut?”: On Unpaid Emotional Labor on The Toast, an essay about how and why emotional work is often undervalued and treated as "women's work". Or, more to the point, not even work: just something women are inherently supposed to do. It's a good piece, and what it spawned was even more interesting: a huge, revelatory MetaFilter thread in which site members, women in particular, talked about all the ways this asymmetry and devaluation of emotional labor has affected their lives and their relationships. Planning a MetaFilter survey
Inspired by this post about the XKCD Survey and this comment by The Underwear Monster, I thought it might be fun to do a Big MeFi Survey along the same lines - mostly goofy questions that we can sic our local datawranglers on and see what fun, weird, fascinating things drop out. [more inside]

Posting to the front page of Metafilter can seem daunting, mysterious, and/or fraught with with uncertain outcomes. (Spoiler: It is easier than it might look.) If you have never or rarely posted a FPP but would like to, we’re here to help. Stretch your wings in September! [more inside]

Mentioned in comments, Dutch comedian who parodies language class
I've been searching on MetaFilter and just can't find it: there was a comment a few years ago that linked to the YouTube channel of a Dutch comedian who parodies I think ESL class aimed at Dutch immigrants. So it's this weird but highly amusing hybrid of Dutch and English with plenty of caustic puns (in Dutch). Anyone recall who or what I am talking about?
Let’s Encourage and Help Folks Make Their First Posts

Out of the Blue, episode #1: The Snail That Wouldn’t Die
In 1846, a dead snail was glued to a specimen card in the British Museum. In 1850, somebody realized that the snail…wasn’t so dead after all, kicking off a curious story of molluskular stoicism that charmed the mid 19th C. science-and-nature circuit. But what went on in the ensuing 150 years? Site user "nicebookrack" wanted to know, and posted question to Ask MetaFilter asking, well, whatever happened to the snail that wouldn’t die? [more inside]
We're adding a soft warning for long above-the-fold text on the blue
We’re adding a heads-up note to the posting process on the front page when previewing a long-above-the-fold post, to help provide folks with preemptive feedback about post length. It’s not enforced—your post won’t be truncated by the posting process or anything like that—but we’re hoping it’ll help folks think about how they’re framing stuff in terms of how much vertical space it might occupy. 106: I Cleaned Out The Bathroom Closet
It's episode 106 of the Metafilter podcast, with me and jessamyn and mathowie. We talk about interesting stuff on the site from June 3 through June 30, and chatter a bit about my summer in Huntsville, the problem of putting doing anything off because you don't want to think about doing everything, and why Matt's always turning into a goddam robot. This episode runs just under a couple hours. [more inside]
#loveWins #mefi
In light of the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling and the explosion of marriages, proposals, officiating proposals, I'm excited to hear about any mefites who are getting married or officiating! I've seen pictures all over twitter, but I'd love to share in the happiness this brings to our own little corner of the internet.
Looking for a comment
There was a longish comment by a person who does design/UX work for Wikipedia about what a huge pain in the ass it was, getting everything AOK across hundreds of different language sites and all the rest. This was offered as a plausible explanation for why the site does not change its looks very often. I liked this comment and I think we mentioned it on a podcast. My Googling, it does nothing. Do you remember? [more inside]
State of Metafilter, and funding update
It’s been a busy year on Metafilter, with some big changes over the last twelve months. Some of the hardest changes were the result of the financial difficulties that came to a head last May with significant staffing cuts. And the best thing to happen for the site was the tremendous outpouring of generosity from Metafilter’s members in response to that financial crisis, through voluntary funding of Metafilter.
I want to thank all of you again for your support, and give you an update on where site finances are now, how funding has helped, and how we’re trying to make it easier to support the site in a way that works well for you—including a new alternative to PayPal. [more inside]
