What happened to Winter Wishes? A's and Q's from the most recent host.
And what should happen with Winter Wishes?
For those who don't know, Winter Wishes is a program by New York Cares where kids, teens, and elders write letters with their gift hopes during the holiday season. For 11 years, MetaFilter, as "MeFi Cares," gave to those in less fortunate circumstances. And not just monetarily. And eventually, we expanded our reach to other giving. Please see my MetaTalk post history for complete info on the last several years we participated, including photos, though I'll summarize below.
I'm writing this right now because we seem to have more engagement on MeTa given new, hopeful developments, and because... well, 'tis the season. Please pardon me for the length of this, but I want to be as detailed and informative and honest as possible. [more inside]
MeFites for the Holidays
During the first Trump administration, we had MetaTalk threads to connect MeFites who had space at their holiday table with other MeFites who may not feel welcome at their family table or who had nowhere special to go. Given the recent election results, we should revive that tradition. [more inside]

The Continuing Ongoing Modern Pen Pal Project
Since the beginning of 2020, I've been doing a project where I write a handwritten letter a week to friends, acquaintances, and family members on a topic of their choosing and have sent out over 150 letters since starting. I last posted for correspondence about 18 months ago here in MetaTalk, asking for participants -- and you folks delivered! From your participation, I've started some lovely longer-term correspondences, and have sent out one-time thoughts on everything from video games to the history of my area to books to new interests. My list has dwindled and I could use some new participants! [more inside]

healthcare more like HELLthcare am I right
Hi (US only) friends! It's health insurance decision season for most of us and we live in a grim dystopia where everything is expensive and nothing makes sense. Employer-sponsored benefits are something I know enough to be helpful about (I hope!) and I'm here volunteering my ability to speak the language, if you need it. [more inside]

Book club for MeFi
I suggested a book club in the "How will we care for our elderly" post on the blue and want to follow up and make this happen. Mods, should I put this book club in Projects? Meetups? Chat? All three? It will be virtual of course, and probably mostly asynchronous, but I imagine adding in an every other month or every three months Zoom chat. [more inside]
MetaFilter: Nazi bar problem.
I want to discuss how the MetaFilter community addresses comments and users who support or defend Nazi/fascist ideology. A user over in this thread, which discusses Canada's House speaker praising a Nazi veteran, had their comment removed and was given a moderator's note regarding this decision. But I don't find this acceptable. Why would we allow additional comments from this user to be made in that thread? An instant ban would be appropriate for anyone who wants to defend Nazis in this community, otherwise MetaFilter is just setting ourselves up for a Nazi bar problem. I'd like both the moderator team and the community to weigh in on this.

Metatalktail Hour: Updates, Conclusions and To-Be-Continueds
The locked safe from this prior metatalktails has been opened, just a little too late to put the resolution in that post. (Local news link - archive link if you can't access original)
What's a story you'd like a update or resolution to? Can be a real life event, a series that you yearn for more of, or a problem you'd like a solution to. [more inside]

Hi everybody, happy weekend! Since we haven't had one of these in a while I figured I'd give it a shot. My question: have these balmy summer months (or boredom, or some other agent, or pure chaotic chance) induced you to pick back up a hobby or undertaking that you used to be into, but dropped at some point in the past? What caused you to drop it? What made you decide to get back into it? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Local Mysteries
This week, the worker owned bookstore in my city revealed that there is a mysterious old safe on the newly opened second floor of their new permanent location. (Alternate archive link if the soft paywall blocks you ). Any one who can pick the lock during their business hours can keep half the contents, or all of the contents if they turn out to be "gross or cursed." What do you think is in the safe? What do you wish is in the safe? Or what minor unsolved mysteries reside in your home/town/mind palace? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Christmas (movies) in July

Metatalktail Hour: Weird work shifts
Hello all!
At my current job, I am on call this week which they define as "work 40, plus any pages that come in after hours." It's actually not as bad as it sounds. But, since it has me up late at night for no good reason, what's your story about a weird/long/exhausting work schedule? Or the best work schedule you have had that would seem odd to someone who is used to a regular 9-5? Or... whatever! [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Mama Said
It's Mothers Day weekend in some places. What's something your mother told you that sticks with you? (Or a mother figure told you: TV mom, teacher, friend with strong maternal energy...) Advice, jokes, songs, shaggy dog stories, facts, aphorisms, etc. [more inside]

Happy April 1, friends. In honor of the day, maybe you'd like to share some of the best and worst pranks (April Fool's or otherwise) that you have experienced or perpetrated, and while we're at it, we can also keep track of what shenanigans people are finding online or out in the world today. Metatalktail Hour: Well, obviously
Hello, everyone, happy weekend! And speaking of weekends (graceful segue), reading a recent paper NYT Style Magazine (international edition), I ran into the jauntily confident statement, "The 1970s were, of course, a golden age of lounging." Which I did not know. Not only did I not know there was a golden age of lounging, I don't even know what hallmarks would signify a golden age of lounging. I wonder what other golden ages I might be missing? Or just generally, apparently obvious things. [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: the clouds and the stars to read
Happy weekend, friends. This week I'm dreaming and remembering about ... sleeping. Dreaming of this berth and this pull down blind, rocking away in a sleeping car, or in a cabin on the sea, rolled by the swell of waves and the water's lullaby. So for today's metatalktails, we have this bottle of German wine to drink and I have to ask you: Better sleeping on a train, or sleeping on a ship / boat? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Fine Print
Happy weekend everyone, I hope you are well! For this metalktail hour topic, I'd like to ask what you are reading, or what you last read, or what you are looking forward to reading ... and also, actually, um, are you reading? Or has the combination of the always-on instant news cycle, ballooning world crises, and overbearing social media interrupted, slowed, or stymied your flow? Or intensified it? [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: 🍪
Hello, everyone, and happy weekend! Today I'm going to need you to tell me about the cookies. Not the tracking ones, the girl scouts / girl guides ones. It's that season, and in the US, a new flavor will be released this week. It's called Raspberry Rally, it will only be available online (why?), and apparently it was inspired by Thin Mints. I'm so curious! Early tasters must report back! [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: The cheapest, but the best
Happy weekend, friends, I hope you are warm, or cool, as the case may be, and feeling rested! This week I'd like to ask you about your beloved items that you can't do without, but which are also quite inexpensive ... and just work better than the pricier varieties. [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Super strix kicks
Happy Superb Owl weekend everyone! 🦉 What fun activities do you have planned? Any burrowing, hooting, screeching, flapping or gliding in the offing? What tasty tidbits will you be hunting down and devouring? Will you be with your parliament homies, or flying solo? Whooo doesn't love this holiday?! <3
What have you done this decade that you're proud of?
I was reading through old favorites tonight and found this post and it's mooshy-happy.
I still haven't hit the daily limit for favorites. Is there one?

Metatalktail Hour: Unsolicited advice, please
Happy weekend, everyone! If you're a Mefite, you've probably found a lot of valuable tips on the site, especially in Ask Metafilter, but those threads are usually focusing on a specific problem or situation. Today I'd like to ask you to share your random tips and tricks about anything at all (that's fit to print!). If it's something you've found handy or helpful, if it makes life easier, faster, neater, nicer, or just more fun, please share! [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Dear me ...
Hello, friends, and happy weekend! Today turned out to be kind of nippy and / or rainy. In a rush to leave the house, you accidentally grabbed an old coat or jacket ... one you haven't worn for at least five years, maybe longer. Putting your hand in the pocket you find a scrap of paper with a note — a note to yourself that you wrote, but no longer remember writing. What does the note say? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Saturday & Sundae
Happy weekend, friends! Now that we are allowed to do it legally, let's all scream about ice cream! For today's metatalktail chat, I'd like to know your thoughts on the cold sweet stuff. What's your favorite flavor, brand, dessert, concoction? Do you have a sweet ice cream memory or experience to share? What goes on your Sundae? Are you an ice cream maximalist or an ice cream minimalist? Do you ever whip your own concupiscent curds? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Can I eat this ... word?
Happy Weekend, friends! For today's metatalktail party, I'd like to ask about your experience of synesthesia, if any. Obviously all of us are not synesthetes, but I think most of us have distinct sensory reactions to at least some words, for example. Do you hear, taste, smell, see, or feel certain words? Tell us about it! [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Easy as 123?
Happy weekend, everyone, and happy 2023! For today's metatalktail topic, I was thinking that as a system of characters representing phonemes, I believe we can all agree that the Alphabet has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more ... so maybe we can do an alphabet checklist for Metafilter? I think we have "M" safely covered, and "A" is surely for "Ask Me," but what about "B"? Best Of? Brand New Day? "C"? ... [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: How auld is your lang syne?
Happy weekend, dear friends, and happy brand new year! 🎉 As we put our old acquaintance, 2022, in the rear view mirror (with perhaps some measure of relief), I'd like to ask about your traditions for celebrating the new year holiday, whenever you celebrate it. Any special foods, games, customs, rituals? What will you be doing, if anything special, to mark the transition? [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: I can call you Betty
Happy weekend and happy holidays, friends! For this week's Metatalktail hour, theora55 says, "The dog name post makes me want to know MeFite's nicknames for pets, pet names for friends and SOs, kids, monikers of nemeses, etc." [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Intruders Detected

Metatalktail Hour: wad some power the giftie gie us ...

Metatalktail Hour: It's what's inside that counts
Hello and welcome to your weekend, mefites! Since it's been a while, today I'd like to ask you, "what's in your bag?" Metatalktail Hour: Just Curious 💤 😢
