MeFiSwap: Best of 2007 Edition. [more inside]
Let's have a massive Metafilter Music collaboration. [more inside]
I would like to start a thread wherein copious "big ups" are given to other users. [more inside]
MeFi's own TF2/gaming server? [more inside]
O glorious snark gods! My writing has improved tenfold, my salary has doubled, my sex-life is perky*, and I have YOU to thank for it! *May or may not be true. [more inside]
Yes it is a double, but it is also good example of how one or two cranky farts can totally change the tone of a thread. [more inside]
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 come out tomorrow. Now's your chance to join the MetaFilter Steam group, play games with people who think that "more inside" jokes are funny, and then set them on fire. [more inside]
Hey gang, what are your Twitter usernames? I want to follow more people but can't figure out how to find people who are interesting, funny and/or would link cool things. I know you would. Who are you? I'll post mine as soon as this thread doesn't get closer or deleted.
Attention Halo-ites: Please update the wiki with your GamerTag. I tire of being clubbed to death by mouth-breathing 12 year olds. [more inside]
pb, MetaFilter fixer-upper and generally awesome dude, welcomed a new addition to his family. congratulations! [more inside]
What do you guys think about instituting "personality points" towards users? You know, something along the lines of: 15 members think user x talks out of his ass too much. 6 members think user y suffers from a holier than thou complex. 24 members have been helped by user z. etc. Really, it's all about helping create context, especially for new and less frequent users. I would love an option where I could scroll my mouse over a name when I read advice in an AskMe thread and see something like, "173 users recommend against this user's advice." It could be all spelled out in a user's profile next to the "this user links to" category.
Ain't we a whole bunch of sweet romantics, eh?
Only 3 days left in the August cycling challenge. Wolfdog still leads JeffL, but an 85 mile lead isn't very big the way those guys are riding.
I'm bored and ignorant. So are you. Let's learn something. There's a plethora of free open "courseware", books, and audio lectures on the internet. And IRC channels where we could "meet". And surplus of smart people here. Let's set up a "course" and take it together.
Anyone want to do some intellectual cinematic cross-pollination and make MeFi Netflix Friends?
SWIMMERS UNITE? I was looking over at the side and see that MeTrain is one sport short of a triathalon. We wouldn't really want to start till September to make it a full month, most likely, but is there any interest?
How to Share Your Obituary With Your Online Friends. When your journey is over, you are probably going to want your online friends, who may live all over the world, to know why your postings have suddenly stopped. Here's a good checklist for anyone who is an active part of an internet community.
I’m MetaFilter user 250, which makes me officially oldschool, but: I very rarely post on any branch; all my old posts are terrible (I checked); my recent posts on the blue are extremely conservative to avoid being terrible like the old ones (many are obituaries); and I pretty much live for AskMe. I write a ton of things on my own sites, but I never really manage to write very much of use on the various Metas. This at least is my feeling. I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence by asking “Is it really OK just to read MetaFilter?” Of course it is. I am just wondering how many other early members really, truth be told, never got the hang of front-page posts and other high-profile “content.” I’m saying this after reading through the archived contributions from some new people (with userIDs 40 times higher than mine), who are way the hell better at it. “We can’t all good at everything”? Or what? What is the right way to react to this?
9 months ago I mentioned my Black Book Art Circle Project, and sent out a whack of books to MeFites. So far, none have come back. I did move in the meantime, but paid for mail forwarding to my current location, just so there would be no lost art. That service is about to expire. Does anyone know the status of the books they received?
A MeFi bicycling challenge was mentioned here and if it was mentioned in other places as well, I apologize-- I couldn't find it. So, who is up for a bicycling challenge similar to what those wacky runners have going on? I am pretty sure we can use a website such as We Endure or similar to start a group and track our progress. Any takers?
We're near the end of the month which means Metafilter run 5.0 for mefites with the nike+ kit is almost over. I'll post the final July standings in this thread in a couple of days. As always, if you want to take part in the next mefi running challenge, post your nike+ screenname in this thread, and I'll send you an invite. (FAQ : yes, it only works with the ipod nano; no, you don't need nike shoes) - (Previous challenges : 1.0.,2.0.,3.0.,3.1.,4.0.) However, we're a little bit in a existential crisis. Some fine mefites joined the running challenge, but proved to be formidable long-distance walkers, crushing all the other running competitors distance-wise. How do we keep it interesting for everybody? Separate MetaWalk challenge?
The subject of rewriting the guidelines is something that comes up from time to time. As MetaFilter evolves as a community, it is good to rewrite the guidelines to reflect evolving standards. I have been thinking about how to write new guidelines on and off for the last week and here's my proposal. [more inside]
Any mahjong playing MeFites in Brooklyn/NYC? [more inside]
Mefi knitters! Do you guys want to start a group on Ravelry? The site's still in beta, hopefully going public soon, but if anyone was fortunate enough to get an account already you can find me under the username "mimsie". I also posted this topic in the Remnants forum if you'd like to respond there.
The current MeFi running challenge is in its final days. I'll post the final results in a couple of days. I don't want to jinx it, but I might actually win this one...(Previous challenges : 1.0., 2.0.,3.0.,3.1.) We're already gearing up for the July distance challenge. I've sent a new invite to the current participants. If you've got the nike+ sports kit for the ipod nano and want to measure yourself against the dreaded metathletes, post your nike+ screenname in this thread, and I'll send you an invite to the challenge.
WiiFi: Friend Code Time Round 2
With AskMe getting lots of press (as in here) as a unit seperate from Metafilter (meaning, blue, grey, white, mauve, etc.), there should really be a message on ask letting the droves of new users know that it is a part of a larger community, with other features, a resource for post discussion and discourse, and a user base not completely dedicated to the green. People who enter through Angel Island should know New York exists. /metaphor)
As a follow up to this post about livejournal's recent suspension of several hundred user accounts, in his latest update on the situation SixApart CEO Barak Berkowitz name checked metafilter citing us as a good example of community policing.
We know we can learn a lot from other communities that use a combination of reputation software and human judgment to gauge community opinion, and we are now actively exploring how we can let the community "vote" on what is acceptable content in order to create greater consistency.
This is the cutest AskMe question and final answer in a while. Or, it's the saddest. I can't decide. Or maybe it's the result of split personality.
MetaFilter Runs v.3.1 is nearly finished, and it looks like ajr is going to take out the speed title. Congratulations, ajr! There seems to be a consensus that the distance challenges are more motivating though (especially for those of us who are decidedly more tortoise than hare), so pj_rivera has proposed an ongoing series of monthly distance contests. The June one is just starting, so please list your Nike+ username if you haven't been issued an invitation yet.
So, um, who sent out the mysterious "PLEASE ENJOY" MefiSwap CDs?
Is Metafilter too labyrinthine, for a new comer at least? I’ve been here for a couple of months now, and I’ve gotten to know a few people, but I still don’t feel as if I’ve become a part of the community yet? Not sure if that’s my fault, may be I should post more often, or comment more in other peoples’ threads, or post better FPPs, but the question’s been on my mind for some time now. It just feels like a tough nut to crack. I am still trying though.
mathowie: Some Community Tips for 2007. Metameta, yeah, but I thought it was worth linking for those who haven't seen it, for some insight into how Matt tries to run the place.
Seriously... you guys rock. Just sayin' thanks.
I have an idea for a songwriting competition, and I think the musicians here are talented enough (and have the know-how / equipment) to pull it off. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, someone (the winner of the last round) could post a challenge (ex: an old-school country waltz about flowers), then everyone who wants to compete could post their songs and the MeFites could vote. Opinions?
Never mind "best of the web," this thread is surely the best of MetaFilter.
Since people are always posting about their GuFfs, BuFfs, and SO's, some of which are also MeFi users, I was wondering if there were parent-son/daughter or sibling users as well (that don't care if we know). Might make for some fun reading.
Metafilter now has a group at LibraryThing. Inspired by the reaction to this thread, jbickers has set up a group with the name "Metafilter" at LibraryThing. Please join if you care to swap reading lists, see what books fellow MeFis own, etc. For maximum coolishness, sign up with the same screen name you use here.
So, it's been done and it's been done again. Is anyone up for doing a third one? I just got an ipod nano for my birthday and picked up the nike kit. I'll have the shoepouch shortly. Anyone want to do a May competition? I haven't created a formal one yet, but I think I can figure it out. I also figure I will be more likely to actually run if I am competing against someone. Is anyone interested? It seems to have been successful the last two times...
So, the deadline for this rounds MefiSwap was last Saturday, time to mail them out you slowpokes.
Is there a list of famous MeFites? I know Adam Savage is here. Just curious who else is around. Not looking to out anyone who prefers anonymity.
Has any more thought been given to a MetaSpace for creative writing? As in a help-me-improve-this zone? Not a Penguin-type wiki by any means--simply an impromptu writers' workshop. I'm assuming AskMe is absolutely inappropriate for that sort of thing, and that it's out of scope for MeFi Projects. MeFi is a nice demographic for this kind of thing, BTW, as it seems to consist mostly of snarky articulate bastards. Thanks.
MeFi Fantasy Baseball '07 needs YOU!
So hey... that singing audition I was preparing for a few weeks ago? Well, it seems I got the gig. Sooo it looks like I'm going back to being a working professional jazz singer & I'll be doing at least a few Sunday nights at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley this year (starting in June or July). And with that, I'll probably get off my rear & start playing other places in the Bay area too (I'm finally starting on a new press kit & music website. Yay!). You lovely Mefites have been very supportive of my music (& my desire to return to making it); it's been ultra appreciated. Moral of the story: if any of you are in the Bay area & interested in hearing me belt out some jazz in person someday, let me know & I can put you on my mailing list for upcoming gigs. Kinda like a mini meetup where I shall serenade you! It's the least I can do. :)
I went and created a Metafilter social group on Ning. I imagine it as a convenient place to put photos and videos (and maybe tools, like greasemonkey scripts etc.) all in one more or less neat little pile. If that doesn't catch on, at least it won't be used for anything evil.
Wow, two threads, one on finding an e-mail address and one on a Quicken password and no one jumps on the poster, calling them a stalker or questioning their motives. I commend you, Mefites!
Pretty cool resource: MeFi User Sites.
MeFi Fantasy Baseball 2007!!!: It's back! We had a great time last year with 14 teams, and I'd like to run the same deal again- 5X5 Roto, daily lineups. A few changes I'd like to incorporate: - Fewer pitching slots. - $5 fee, to cover Yahoo Fantasy Plus (sorry folks, the free service is just lame) and 2 prizes: League Winner, and Most Improved (in points as of the All-Star break) If you're interested, please drop me a line via my profile. I'd like to cut it off at 15 teams, with preference given to teams who played last year. I'm also open to (reasonable) rule change requests once we've gotten all the managers.
