MuFi Madness

I too have been taken with MuFi Madness™. I excitedly went to showcase my band's work, and- Oh! the horror! I was presented with an error on upload:
The MIME type of the uploaded file "audio/x-mpeg" was not accepted by the server.
I use Audacity for my mp3 encoding, and am at my wits' end. Is there a way to rebrand a file's MIME type, or convert it? I'm quite eager to get in on the action, but need your help. Thanks, fellow citizens.

MuFi mini-mistakes

MuFi mini-mistakes: "Be patient, it will take a few minutes to upload most song." and the title tag on this page is "Post a New Question". That is all.

Announcing MeFi Music!

Now in alpha beta gamma whatever: MeFi Music. Built in 12 hours with help from pb, it's still got some rough edges and features to come, but for now you can upload a song you've written and recorded (this isn't for file sharing), stream it from the front page or from its own page (where you can also leave comments). You can add things to playlists and stream those too. And the RSS feed is a podcast you can drag into iTunes to suck down every mp3 that gets posted. I'm sure there are bugs and the color scheme was slapped together in five minutes, but expect to see things ironed out in the next couple weeks and I'll add it to the global nav for all sites when it feels complete. If you have any comments or questions, drop them here.

Can I Post an MP3?

I have an mp3 I'd like identified. I could crop it down to a few relevant seconds and post it to askme for help. How much, if any, of an ill-gotten mp3 can I host and post before the RIAA puts a hit out on me? The end goal truly is to purchase the music, I just need to know who made it. Also, if this is a just a really bad idea in general, feel free to let me know.

Opinions on MefiSwap (music)?

Voice your opinion on the future of the MeFiSwap. Or at least the MeFiSwap as I've got a hand in it. If you've been a part in the past, if you want to be a part in the future, if you've just got a thought you want to share, here's an opportunity.

cortex records matthewchen is spamming

This is a litle weird, maybe, but so cool I wouldn't want anyone to miss it before it drops off the MeTa front page. adamrice said 'matthewchen is spamming', so I said 'there's a jangly, wistful guitarpop song somewhere in the phrase 'mathewchen is spamming'....' and cortex agreed and went ahead and recorded the song. How cool is that? I love this place sometimes.

Is there a sequel to Jingle Bell Rock?

The holidays are here (more or less) and as Christmas music fills the air, I find myself reminded of last year's MeFi masterpiece... Jingle Bell Rock, vocalized by Pink Stainless Tail. It became a favorite of mine, my to the chagrin of all my friends, and I was wondering - nay, hoping - will we be similarly blessed this year? Does anyone hope to follow in his mighty footsteps?

Bugs in Music

Questions/comments about MetaFilter Music. I can't download anything...are the files being moved? Do people still send MP3s for it? Does anyone still use it? It looks so neglected...

Also, starkeffect's page has some errors on it.

Subsites?

Any or all of the following additional sections would be most welcome: MetaFilm, MetaLit, MetaDesign, MetaMusic. They could be discussions on current trends/reviews in the chosen fields and/or critiques on Mefi members ventures in these areas. I know this is more like a herd of ponies and most likely not forseeable in the immediate future but I thought we could at least talk about it.

Music swaps that aren't MeFi related

Swap substitute: A friend of mine is really interested in the concept of the MeFi Swap, but of course he can't participate as he's not a member. I pointed him towards the MonkeyFilter Swap (which I admittedly have very little knowledge of), but are there any other websites out there that work on the same model?

MetaFilter: Grand Royal experiment

What if everyone ponied up, say, five bucks to a PayPal account? That's $70K. We make that our max bid, and if we lose, we either get it back or make a donation to a music charity.

While the MetaFilter: Grand Royal experiment sounds noble, it would likely have to be conducted "off-site, yet in spirit". (Unless Matt's anxious for another burgeoning project to worry over...)

So how do we bell this cat, and how many brave mice want to participate?

Did I see this link here?

was I dreaming?

I thought I saw a link here a few days ago, about a bookmark that would quickly let you know, using amazon's database, whether a specific cd was put out by a member of the riaa. but when I searched for this link here, it was gone. And I didn't see it on lofi, when I looked there. Normally, I wouldn't care too much about a deleted thread, but I can't seem to find the link in question via google either. can anyone help me out?

More updates and info on updates in Music

A question and a related request: I see on our music site that Matt is behind in adding songs, but should be caught up by April 27th. The question: Matt, did you get all the new songs posted?

And the request: is there a way to include posted-on or updated-on dates with each musician's folder, beyond the "new today/new yesterday" labels?

Music entering blogs

i think there is a i-make-music meme slowly injecting itself into the normal DNA of blogs, spreading out from Here. Ken Layne and Derek have both recently posted old old songs as mp3's. Anyone else notice this? And is everyone recording new stuff to post? i hope so.

Is there any music composition software you'd recommend or avoid?

In light of the new resident musician showcase, I'd like to ask the professionals: Is there any music composition software (or hardware) that you couldn't live without, adore, and would recommend, or, conversely, would rather warn others to avoid?

Making the most of MeFi Music

We've all seen the extensive how-tos of home recording that abound on the internet, but their suggestions can seem unreachable to someone with limited time, knowledge, income, or resources. How do we go from catchy riff to digitally mixing hit Metafilter-Music? Will a free version of Pro-Tools let us easily track up a house band? Should we shell out major dollars for a major software package like Cakewalk, PowerTracks, Cool Edit Pro, et cetera? Or, can the same sounds be achieved with free/share-ware like N-Track Studio or Goldwave & Multi-quence? Surely someone out there can offer some sage advice [...more inside...]

Metafilter Music makes its debut.

It's here! MetaFilter Music.

I've uploaded most of the files people have sent me (I'll be adding more all day today). Lots of great stuff already. Electronica, rock, folk, it's all there. It uses the Andromeda streaming/download server which lets you download songs, stream folders/songs, and lets you make playlists on the fly.

Oh, I also added a new MetaTalk category to discuss music.metafilter.com-related stuff here.

How would you like to have MeFi Music?

The MetaFilter Music channel. I've got another server setup with loads of bandwidth, so I was thinking of this as a new project/feature at MetaFilter: A place to download and stream music created by MetaFilter members. Would anyone be interested in taking part? Do that many MetaFilter members create music?

Looking for a winamp plugin that gives recommendations

Sorry no link. In a discussion a couple of months ago there was mention of a winamp plugin that would recommend music based on the tracks that you were listening to. I can't find the thread that mentioned this or anything on google. Does anyone remember this? Can anyone post a link?

New dublab CD

Once upon a time, dublab was lamented on metafilter. Cry no more: they have released a CD (which may have been announced way back when). In my URB magazine, they say: "Freeways is an easy, abstract-leaning release to have handy while traversing the 405, the 110, the 10 freeways...or down any side roads that ultimately lead to more halcyon places." (URB issue 87, sept 2001, page 158 - emphasis theirs.)
