Would this link be against self-link etiquette or policy?
I wanted to create an FPP for this ten second film festival, which I think would be of interest to many MeFites, but I've run into a couple of ethical and logistical conundrums: 1) The festival is being run by a friend of mine, so I suppose I might be a little biased as to this being The Best of The Web. 2) You really have to be in the Twin Cities area to see the screening and win a prize, even though submissions are accepted from anywhere. Any thoughts about this being FPP worthy?
If it is wrong, why is it possible?
Stupid question: If posting in image on the blue is so wrong, why is it possible?
Try the Schiavo tag
The sideblog says:
>If you're looking for info on the Schiavo case, try the Schiavo tag. It's been talked about quite a bit, so please direct comments there instead of new posts.
Then there's this post. It's already spawning a fair few comments, so I guess it'll be stuck there. Is this a violation? How strict is the policy?

Newsfilter posts to well-trafficked can be good (with an example)
OK, I'm going to start a flamewar. This is why one-link Newsfilter FPPs from well-trafficked websites aren't evil. (The via doesn't count as part of the post for me.) The poster added context and teased the story. Bravo.
Should banned users' profiles reflect the reason for their status?
If a user is banned for blatantly violating the no-self-link rule, would it be a good idea to either a) note the banning on that person's user page or b) delete the user page entirely? Seems strange to keep a user page from someone who took a dump on the community.

What happened to my MeFi question?
Earlier today I posted a question about MeFi (how to turn off background color) in the main Ask MeFi area, which appeared for a few minutes then vanished. Did it likely get moved somewhere else, or just censored? for being in the wrong place? for expressing (in mild terms) dislike of a Mefi feature (I can't see text on colored background). Or did it just vanish into the ether?
What amounts to self-linking?
Is it considered self-linking when a tech professional makes an announcement on MeFi? I suppose Anil Dash is the best example (only an example; I'm not accusing him of this).
Dash seems to be the highest-profile MeFi commenter. Have there been others in the past?

reason for deletion?
I don't think deleting Metatalk threads asking to clarify the deletions of Ask Metafilter threads is good for the community. [+]
Can we close bad AskMe threads that take off?
I can recall a few times in recent history where a thread that failed to meet the guidelines of AskMetafilter stayed around for a while because no one happened to be around to nip it in the bud -- and then the thread accumulated so many interesting answers that people had gotten attached to it and Matt was reluctant to delete it. I sympathize with this reluctance but also feel that appropriate deletions are good for preventing the mission of AskMe from drifting too far afield. Would the ability to close AskMe threads be a good compromise solution for these cases?
It's the best of the web - and it is not in English
Posting links to websites in languages other than English: previously discussed, but without clear guidelines. There's a great link I could post -- but even if the images are a key part of what makes that site's interesting, it's not in English. More inside.
I already saw this stuff on Engadget, Memepool, etc.
Via, via, via -- Engadget, Memepool, and Boing Boing, respectively. These are not minor blogs. Boing Boing got 3 million hits yesterday. I already saw this stuff on the blogs and on delicious; can we stick to fresh stuff on MeFi unless we have something insightful to add?
Can we continue posts about to be archived?
The post regarding Gannongate, started on February 14th, now has close to 600 comments. I appreciate how it has been kept current by faithful posters, but I'm afraid it's going to fall off the edge of Metafilter into the Archive. What's the proper thing to do with a thread that continues to attract posts two weeks after its initial appearance?
How long do I have to comment in order to post?
How many roads must a man walk down before they call him a man? I tried to post a link to the front page but was told that I haven't commented enough to earn that right yet -- but nowhere can I find stated how many comments I have to make first. I did a MeTa search but either I was unable to refine my search terms properly or the question has never been posed. Does anyone know, or do I have to take this upstairs? It's a damn fine link, too.

Expiration date for news-related posts?
Hypothetical question (brought to mind by a recent post) : Is there an expiration date for news-related posts? Is something that was published last weekend still front-page worthy today?
Can I add a second question since my first one is answered?
meta-meta-question -
I nearly hit "post" a few minutes ago here, but I stopped myself because I was asking follow up questions, only slightly off-topic. Good ones I think (and the simple thread is nearly worn out). I can't post another question for another 6.5 days. Shouldn't I just ask the questions in the thread while it's a fresh topic instead of posting a new question in a week? Or should I just suck it up and wait?

Plea for editorial discretion when deleting AskMe comments
YA plea for editorial discretion/benevolent neglect. [greater within]
What constitutes a double-post?
Question: what constitutes a double-post? This is easy to answer for websites, but it seems to be harder for NewsFilter posts. One person recently argued that a second NewsFilter post on a previously discussed topic isn't a double if it offers a different perspective. However, I'm not sure that argument can be made for the topic of this post, which has already been discussed twice. So is every news article on a topic fair game for its own post? Early returns indicate that the discussion isn't going to be much different from the first two go-rounds, so what's the point? (yes, I know this is a double post).
A single link to Amazon's front page? Really?
Yes, we all await the new Hitchhiker's Guide movie with equal parts fear and excitement. But an FPP linking to Amazon's home page to show the trailer for a new movie is bad form.
There should be some room for frivolity and banter
Boo. There were a lot of fairly well-thought out and witty references to MetaFilter history, past and present, in that thread before it was closed to further comments and had its middle taken out.
Not every thread here should be a linear progression from a problem to a solution. There should be some room for frivolity and banter. Without it, we lose our sense of community and shared experience.
Discuss.

Is using "best answer" on subjective questions appropriate?
The best answer feature used in this AskMeFi question seems a little disconcerting to me. For a question that's so subjective, is it really appropriate? I find it off putting.
It's okay to link to zip (or exe or...) files?
Genuine question here - and not meant to be a "call out".
When exploring the Text Adventures post I noticed that the Photopia hyperlink was to a .zip file.
I am cautious about clicking on any .zip and .exe files online. Is there any protocol about linking to such on an FPP? At the very least shouldn't one note that the hyperlink is to a .zip by indicating so (i.e. Phototopia [note: .zip file])?

OK to compliment AskMe response?
Is it befitting to compliment a response in Ask Metafilter?
Self link and then purchased ads? Wha?
I hit the blue page the other day and saw a JUST POSTED story that was nothing more than a link to a page where you can buy a t-shirt with a design/slogan on it. (I'm not mentioning/linking-to which one it was because that isn't the purpose of this post). The FPP was deleted within minutes (from when I noticed it). However, today I see that it is listed in the Blogads on the front page. All is as it should be - I'm not complaining - I just think it is interesting that self-linkers apparently (sometimes?) get the opportunity to purchase an ad that they were trying to get for free.
Is it ok to post followups in threads?
new MetaTalk post limit
This will be my last MetaTalk post for the next seven days, because MetaTalk is now subject to the same time limits as Ask MetaFilter.
Where to put Askme Followups
Matt, should we use MetaTalk to follow-up our AskMe questions? Or should we use AskMe? Or neither?
Why was this question anonymous?
I'm not sure I understand why a question about driving with earphones in, was posted anonymously...
Can you delete follow-up comments when the original comment is deleted?
When you're pruning the site and deleting comments, do you mind deleting followups that only make sense with the original comment?

Is there a guide for how racy a post can be? I posted a fairly racy (but funny, or at least I thought so) thing eariler and it was taken off. Did I step over the line?

Overly graphic post: where did it go?
I read a post the other day (maybe two?) that included a link to gruesome pics of Iraqis killed in the Fallujah siege and ensuing massacre. I added a comment to the post, asking whether anyone with any forensic expertise might be able to reveal how the dead had been killed, because it looked as though they were not victims of conventional firepower (could it have been gas?). When I went back to see if anyone had responded to the original post had been deleted alongwith its accompanying commentary. Does anyone here know why the post was removed and based on what policy? Thanks in advance.
Why was my comment deleted
Did I forget to hit "post" or was my comment deleted from this topic and if so, why?
Too graphic for the front page?

What is the policy on giving away usernames?
What is the policy on giving away usernames? I purchased a spare during the Great November Influx and now its just sitting there, rotting on Matt's server. I really have no use for it. It was an impulse buy and I'd like to give it away.
Deleted comment cipher?
In this post a number of comments that (at least in my opinion) were legitimately funny but a little tasteless were removed without notice. Two questions - (1) would it make sense to have a "comment deleted" notice so that meta-comments make a little more sense, and (2) why were they deleted if none of the guidelines were violated?
Policy on posting links found on Fark/Slashdot/Boingboing?
What's the policy on posting links you found on Fark, Slashdot or BoingBoing? I read through each of these daily, and constantly find links on MeFi that were posted earlier on one of those other three sites. I've refrained from posting info that I found on those other sites because it seems to easy. If you get the info from one of those other sites, shouldn't you do a "via xxx?"

Self-link detected.
They're clamoring for it, and here it is. This post contains a nakedly aggressive self-link. For shame, doc.
Multi-questioned AskMe post.
Multi-questioned AskMe post. It's a particularly (IMHO) obnoxious kind of transgression, in that there's no way to claim it's anything other than an attempt to circumvent policy that's in place for good reason. Can the post page make the "one question per post" point more clearly?
Thank you, Matt
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Matt for deleting the Invisibility/Flight thread in Ask.Me
Where's the line on product-related content?
MetaShillter: there's never been a deficit of accusations regarding the use of MeFi to push product. Many legitimate Best o' the Web posts contain product-related content. While it's clearly contra-Matt if you profit from a post, where's the fine line?

Why is there an AskMe limit?
I just skimmed the past two months of MeTalk looking for this thread and didn't find it, so excuse me if it's a DP, but: When I went to post an AskMe question today, I got this: You've asked a question in the past week. There is a limit of one question per week, which you've used up. Make them count, because you'll only get one a week. [+]
Please ban people for crummy answers.
There's been a lot of hand-wringing in re: askme lately, so, have we considered the idea of the temporary ban? I submit for your consideration this post. In my mind, that warrants, say, a 2-week ban from askme. Second offense is a 4-week ban and third offense is a permant ban. All from askme, mind you, I'm not talking about a mefi-wide ban.
Of course, this is all more administrative overhead for Matt and god knows I wouldn't bother were I in his shoes. It just sort of seems like a definitive "this sort of uselessness is not desired here" response would be nice.
