Comment editing: Is it a pony in the works for some day or will it never ever happen? [more inside]
I know this is an incredible longshot, and I'm putting up my snark shield already, but is there any support for having a NewsFilter subsite? People who hate newsfilter FPPs could totally avoid them, and people like me would know what the hell's going on outside without ever having to leave the site. [more inside]
I'd like to introduce Big Big Question, an experimental home for hypothetical chatfilter and other "big discussion" questions. [more inside]
MusicFilter: a possible solution for the flash player problems at MetaFilter Music. [more inside]
The Whistler trip is now two weeks away. In case anyone is still on the fence about coming, check out the wiki for pics of the latest conditions, and for a link to some great deals on lift tickets and accomodations. Scroll down for a little taste of what's in store.
Team Fortress 2 Weekend Match (and info for new players): Saturday December 1st. [more inside]
Back in April you guys posted and commented on a cartoon I did called "Internet Argument." Matt's allowed me to mention here as a follow-up that I am now auctioning off the original cartoon with all proceeds going to charity. [more inside]
We've finally finished a several month long project today by reworking the back end of Metafilter to bring site security practices up to date. The new login system we were testing yesterday is now live for everyone. And you can even change your password now, after 8 years of everyone asking! [more inside]
Asperger's shouldn't be thrown out as an explanation or excuse for any behavior unless one has been clinically diagnosed with it.
AskMe thread on chilling Coke, specifically this answer, makes Lifehacker's list of Top 10 Food and Drink Hacks. Comments contain doubt as to the real identity of Mefi's own asavage.
It's nice that we have popular favorites for ask.me for the last 7 days and the last thirty days, but can we get all time favorites as well? (also links to the 7 days and 30 days on the popular questions page.)
We're working on a new login system for MetaFilter and we're looking for a few brave souls to try it out. [more inside]
ND¢, generally I really like you, but it's clear that you are being a dick for the sake of being a dick, notwithstanding your attempts at justifying that as your real and valid opinion. All you had to say was "yeah, maybe my joke was a little offside" and no one here would have busted your balls over it. Just be a decent human being with a little respect and understanding and things don't have to turn into a shitpile.
How afraid should we be of publicizing that Metafilter Music has some great covers? [more inside]
I miss the old metafilter. [more inside]
Cool, when did the "remove from activity" thing get implemented?
Please, for the love of humanity, erase this MeFi user from my brain. [more inside]
"If you absolutely must post another link within 24 hrs, email me the post for approval." [more inside]
Very short question. Why does it say 'X new links' when most posts here don't have links? Shouldn't it say 'X new posts or X new flameouts/hugesexismthreads/podcasts'?
Podcast call-in! For the next 48 hours, call +1 (503) 487-0014 to leave a message for this week's podcast (try to keep it to less than a minute long). We'll pick 5-10 of the best ones, play them on the show and answer any questions.
I think everyone's read the "note" about relevance and respect at the bottom of the posting window in the blue. But it seems that very few people actually take that message to heart. [more inside]
Toronto meetup over the holidays? [more inside]
Tagging posse: 2 questions. [more inside]
Travel doesn't seem to get much traffic. The post yesterday was the first in almost a month. Can we get a link to it at the top, along with the links to the other subsites?
I've often heard/read the anecdotes that "Only the die-hard Mefites look at MeTa" and "Most of the AskMe regulars don't venture into MeFi." Is this validated by actual user data and/or site hits? (I don't know if that's the right terminology to use). When I first came across Metafilter (2-3 years before I actually became a member) I immediately clicked on the other links at the top (AskMe and MetaTalk were the ones I remember being there when I first found the site). Do some users really only stick with one subsite or is that just a myth?
Pony/suggestion - beef the Jobs subsection up with more job-related resources. [more inside]
As part of my final paper for a grad class, I wanted to ask the hivemind a few questions. It's just 20 quick questions about MetaFilter and AskMetaFilter, since those are the two most active parts of this community. I had to break it up into two parts since I'm a poor grad student and don't want to drop $20 for one survey: Part One Part Two It's also limited to the first 100 responses, but if even get close to 100 responses I'll be extremely happy. Thanks in advance! [more inside]
Bug with recent activity? [more inside]
Tis the season...to shop Mefi? In this post, MadamJuJuJive posits an idea for us to have a Shop Mefi page for the holidays. I like the idea a lot, and not just because she pimped out my soap company. I would love to buy some of the art, music, photography and other goodies that fellow Mefites are making. So, how hard would it be to make a MeFi Mall?
So what makes a good meetup? [more inside]
Pony request: For years, Thinkblank ran their great Secret Santa, where people would put in their wish list of <$20 gifts from a website and then a computer would randomly couple participants together and they would accordingly send gifts but wouldn't know who the giver was until six months later. But, sadly, Thinkblank is defunct. Possible to do a secret santa on Metafilter?
Any chance of the "title" attribute for links, please? In the UI, I mean. [more inside]
If I could have just one little bitty present from Santa this year, it would be to see the well deserved (and hopefully painful) death of the use of:
originalnew object inserted
"fixed that for you"
I wanna pony: Could the Recent Activity page include a link to the new activity in a thread? [more inside]
Policy regarding political fundraising, campaigning or other support sites for Ron Paul? [more inside]
I see that this AskMe post gratuitously compares a beautiful woman's face to a diseased rectum, distended with constipated feces. [more inside]
Which guideline did the BoC post violate? [more inside]
I'm kinda bumed this post on the 'Very Short Introductions' series was deleted, but understand why. Any suggestions how to get the book series in the blue, besides pushing illegal copies? The FPP had 4 favorites in its brief life and had some useful discussion starting about the best books in the series.
How many other people took 2-3 years to notice that "odinstream"'s screen name is, in fact, odinsdream? [more inside]
In August, mefite birdlips suffered one of the most horrifying and tragic losses imaginable. Then yesterday, a lifelong friend of his was killed on the spot in a car accident. How about a little love from the hive thrown his way?
Feature request: an automatic Coral Content Distribution Network function for front page posts. [more inside]
Recently, as in the past day or so, the flag for "offensive" was changed to "offensive/sexism/racism". This was done at the request of several female members who believe Metafilter has become or has been hostile to women and who wished to have some means of highlighting these instances. Several other changes are being considered, such as an addition to the FAQ/guidelines, although nothing concrete has been hammered out. If you would like to add suggestions or have constructive criticism, please do so in this thread. If you you would like to read the full story of how this came to be, check out this previous Metatalk thread. It's a bit long, but worth reading for a full understanding of how this issue came about.
This account is disabled. What? When? Why?
Just curious if anyone's ever had a MeFi meetup in their house. Either drinks or potluck or whatever. Yes, no? How'd it go? Stupid idea or dumb idea?
Any Died Pretty &/or Ed Keupper fans out there? [more inside]
MeFi Mail Pony Request -- I often miss that I have new messages because the icon's so goshed darned tiny and doesn't call attention to itself in any way. Since I *rarely* get MeFiMails (no one likes me), can we get something like, say, a blink tag or a .wav that says "You've got Mail!" or something up there when we have new mail? [more inside]
Happy after Thanksgiving, Atlanta! Let's eat some more on December 1. [more inside]
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. Here's wishing you and your families peace of mind, peace of heart, and generosity of spirit.
"Unchecked growth will kill us all" on the blue, "what's the best quality 42" plasma screen" on the green. [more inside]
Podcast question - higher quality recording. [more inside]
I'll be the first to admit that it was a weak post and an unknown double. However, I'm unclear as to what 'basic site guideline' I violated.
A couple folks sounded up for another go-round of the Boxing Day Blood Drive. Shout out and coordinate within if you're interested in donating blood 'round then. [more inside]
We've still got the CSS rounded tab corners in MetaTalk, so I assume they're not breaking anything - can we have them in the blue and green now? They're purty. Thanks. [more inside]
Deleted questions are showing up in intermittent fashion, and that is shaking me to my core. Won't you help?
Dumb, probably-asked-before question about deleted questions. [more inside]
This user had a post deleted yesterday for self linking and four out of her five comments have been self links. Why is her account still active? [more inside]
It think it's been asked before, but I'm asking again: may we please have a mechanism for dropping a thread from our recent activity page? One comment, and you can be stuck with a thread for-seemingly-ever. And the longest-lived are often the ones you least want hanging around. [more inside]
How about a meet-up in Timonium, MD? As far as I know, it's the only unincorporated area of America to power starships! [more inside]
My blackberry will no longer display the "Recent Activity" page for about the past month. [more inside]
So this and this were posted this morning, and, being that I loathe YouTube only posts in the first place, it got me thinking...Why isn't there a policy against YouTube-only Posts? [more inside]
Anyone fancy a Glasgow Meet-Up before the year is out? [more inside]
A few small suggestions concerning the Links menu. [more inside]
I think it'd be cool if when posting as anonymous on AskMe, you had the option to provide a separate password which would let you log in as anonymous just for the thread you're creating and post comments. The main benefit is that it would allow responders to ask for more information. The main risk I see is that someone could out themselves by accident if they forgot to log in as anonymous before commenting...
MusicFilter: interviewing the MefiMusicians. [more inside]
Wolof has seven Nearby users. Of the seven, two (naturesgreatestmiracle and twirlypen) have error! instead of Nearby users. [more inside]
Can I just say that, despite the gravity of the post itself (I thought it was interesting, anyway), I do find it absolutely brilliantly hysterical that a post about four starving tigers eating a fifth is deleted because... the post was "pretty thin". Heh.
mathowie and allkindsoftime will be in San Francisco December 15-16. Meetup? [more inside]
Some time ago I recall reading a really good AskMe about college alumni interviews. Now I can't find it for the life of me. Help? [more inside]
Someone is begging for the banhammer.
Metafilter looks a little funny today. Blue, grey, green, everything is showing up like this under firefox. Safari shows things like this.
Happy birthday Generation Y MeFites! [more inside]
Is there a way to reset favorites? [more inside]
Dallas (and anyone else that feels like making the drive in) Meetup! Sunday December 16th at 7 PM. We're thinking that starting at The Meridian Room in Exposition Park for appetizers (and dinner for those that want it) and then seeing where the night takes us from there is a grand idea. [more inside]
I really like the last 7 days highly favourited list - I get to see things I would have otherwise missed. Is there some way I can see the most favourited posts of all time (eg mushroom one. I've read the FAQ - It's a little difficult searching successfully on "favorite/s".) in both Metafilter and AskMe?
Seeing this recent MeTa thread at 378 comments made me wonder what the longest pan-MetaFilter thread was. I came up with this from August 24, 2001 at a whopping 1729 comments (apparently some kind of record), but they're context-less (for me, at least) because the link to the "metafilter parody" that the post refers to is gone. Can anyone slake my thirst for MetaFilter history and supply the parody that inspired such prolific commenting?
So, apparently AskMe is not the place for this question. Where should it have gone instead?
Can we have Markdown? It's so neat. I subconsciously compose everything in it and it's now a slight pain writing actual HTML tags. For instance, you can do a quote by starting the first line of a paragraph "> " instead of having to wrap it in blockquote/close blockquote tags. It's way easier to do useful things.
Show #19 of the podcast features an interview with mothershock (Andi Buchanan) and recaps from MetaFilter sites. It was recorded on November 16, 2007 and runs about 50 minutes long. [more inside]
The addition of the user-pics page has prompted me to wonder: is there a handy list of all the interesting MeFi links somewhere? I'm sure there's more stuff like that that I don't know about.
Can we please have an extra hour added to the server offset options in our profiles to give +21? Now that all the time changes have shaken out for the summer I'm an hour off. [more inside]
The Whistler ski trip is less than a month away now. Yesterday, not content to wait until Saturday for the lifts to open, I put on my skins and took a trip up Blackcomb. It looked pretty good up there. [more inside]
Mefi members on eMusic? Inspired by the thread at Mecha, if you're an eMusic user what's your nickname?
A post about how women experience street harassment has been deleted. The one about how the psychology of exhibitionist men remains. The grounds: This post was deleted for the following reason: one exhibitionism post per day is enough. This is linked in the thread just below this. Please don't use MetaFilter to forward your point from metatalk. -- jessamyn My point was to continue a discussion some people thought valuable from a previous thread deleted apparently because that post was poor. Just can't get the hang of this thing. Hey ho.
Sometimes I want a flag along the lines of "this whole thread needs special attention." What should I do when this happens? [more inside]
These comments are really making me think, actually... I really wish people could post comments as anonymous sometimes. Because by percentages alone, YOU KNOW that there are people reading this thread who are, indeed, serial flashers or public masterbators. There HAVE to be. You know, I can take a bit of sexism, but this is really overboard.
Isn't is awfully rude to make a big deal out of non-anonymity in an AskMe thread? It's implying someone should be ashamed, isn't it?
Goleta and Santa Barbara Mefites, let's do lunch. [more inside]
I DUNNO. ASK METAFILTER. A shoutout (in the company of some rather big web-names) from big-time webcomicker (and dead tree comicker), MetaFilter's Own clango.
Podcast feeds from music playlists seem not to be working.. at least it isn't on this one. [more inside]
Short notice Portland, ME meetup? [more inside]
Recent Activity feature request. [more inside]
Chicago Meetup? I just moved to the Windy City and was wondering if anyone might want to get together in December [more inside]
The MeFi Writer's Group has been resurrected yet again... [more inside]
Portland, OR MeFites: Far from home this Thanksgiving? Us too. Please attend our Orphan's Thanksgiving dinner/short film festival! [more inside]
I would like an opt-out of viewing profile pictures. I use the plain template at work, and the images, while usually SFW, are really, um, attention-grabbing. [more inside]
Can we harness our collective buying power? [more inside]
Lawrence, KS meetup on November 19th. Time? Place? Preferred drink special?
Just wanted to call attention to an AskMe that really takes you on a roller-coaster ride -- opening with sadness, stopping off at beauty, providing lots of warm fuzzies throughout, stopping off for a surprising dollop of disgust on the way to inexplicable hilarity (ymmv), and ending up being a great reference point for anybody in a relationship.
I really enjoyed last night's San Francisco meet-up! [more inside]
Anyone think we could have a meetup in Scotland again ? [more inside]
I added some quick hacky iCal support to the upcoming meetups sidebar here on MetaTalk. Hit the "iCal" link to get a properly formatted calendar file you can subscribe to and see all the upcoming meetups in your calendar of choice. Here's what it looks like in iCal.
How are people putting their main question in the title box in AskMe so often? Is something wrong with the form? [more inside]
The Projects section seems more geared towards web/internet projects. Would posting my show info in Projects be appropriate?
I think that we need to ban a certain MeFite from attending any gatherings. [more inside]
MetaFilter Music: The Podcast [more inside]
Jimbob said "Yeah, keep this thread running. May it serve as an example to all the American politics nuts who insist on starting a new post every time Hillary takes a shit." And so that's just what we did. In an example of how I think Metafilter can do politics well, the Australian Politics thread, which started on October 14 (the date the election was called, which is not the first day of the campaign), ran for 30 days straight and (at time of writing) had amassed almost 600 comments. But as is the norm for an FPP after 30 days on the Blue, it's about to be closed so discussion has moved over to Thread #2, by wilful, to get us through to election day. An index of the first thread is inside, as well as kudos for those involved (because I think they deserve it). [more inside]
A follow up on this post. I saw there were a few members that had sailed on SS France / SS Norway / SS Blue Lady and thought they might want to grab a souvenir. [more inside]
Phoenix/East Valley Meetup, por favor? [more inside]
This is too weak for the blue (and many will say for the grey as well), and I'm too close to him for it not to be a "self-link," but I thought that some MeMu users may be interested in Sufjan Stevens' Xmas Song Swap. [more inside]
Mefi Mail request: Any chance we could get a couple of minor features regarding the status of our sent and received messages? [more inside]
This is a metatalk thread for those who wish to discuss issues of health and obesity rather than derailing the thread about Leonard Nimoy's new photography book.
A couple of times this week I've run across links that had significant new information on stories that made the Blue recently enough to still be active. By themselves they don't feel meaty enough to merit a new FPP, but if I just tack them at the end of the old FPP it feels like wasted effort that nobody's likely to see. [more inside]
Team Fortress 2 Match Today 2:00 PM EST! [more inside]
Blah blah Sydney meet-up photos blah blah lots of weddings yadda yadda good times had by all blah blah look there's tutu's... [more inside]
Today has been the best day in terms of FPPs in living memory. The sort of day that will keep me coming back for years to come. Can Fridays always be dedicated to the very best of the web? And statistically - what day has provided the most favourites?
"Get your own blog" is a stupid thing to say to a member of a site whose masthead reads "Community weblog." [more inside]
The new login procedure is annoying. [more inside]
There was a list in the last few weeks of a bunch of weird places to get christmas gifts. One was the american science supply and the author commented that a similar list was put up last year. Searching metafilter and ask metafilter has proven fruitless. Can someone get me back to the post? thanks.
Can we get an update?
How about an RSS feed for the Recent Activity From My Contacts page? It would make
stalking others following my contacts a lot easier. [more inside]
We've already had several, and we don't need any more links to Keith Olbermann ranting. By now we're all well aware of Keith Olbermann and his editorial opinions, and links to his most recent outraged rant don't belong on MetaFilter just like editorial rants by Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, or Andy Rooney don't belong here.
San Francisco Bay oil spill meet-up? Does anyone have any info or suggestions for volunteering?
Blackberry browsing on AskMe [more inside]
First of all, thank you to #1, pb, et al. for all of the new toys, it's not even Christmas! I'm wondering now, if it's worth the effort (or possible) to include the "Bold", "Italics" and "links" buttons to MeFiMail and much more importantly, to AskMe. [more inside]
I'd rather not clutter up nickyskye's Mango post with this question, but I've noticed that the FSI Language Course site Vacapinta mentioned in the thread (here, previously) is inaccessible. Does anyone know if the site is down for good? [more inside]
I'm trying to participate... [more inside]
Any MeFites in San Juan, PR or St. Vincent/Grenadines? [more inside]
Turkey Day round-up in the East Bay? [more inside]
I know the new social networking trends around here are stirring controversy, but I think there's room at metafilter for one more! I'd like to see a place to announce a less-than-meet-up and ask who's-going-to-be-at-local-event? [more inside]
Oh come on, people. Bad jokes are being deleted now? None of my posts are going to be left by the time you're done. [more inside]
A quick formatting request for the contacts lists: "links to" and "linked by" as vertical lists side by side rather than as blocks of inline text. Also, a little icon to indicate mutual contacts, and a little plus sign to add new non-mutual contacts from the "linked by" list. I have the del.icio.us contacts list in mind.
This AskMe seems to be raising a kerfuffle, understandably. It's a very polarized subject; perhaps worth bringing to the attention of those who don't frequent AskMe? languagehat made a quite worthwhile comment.
Reminder: the deadline for the Metafilter Music Collaboration is this Friday. So if you want to contribute, now is the time. [more inside]
A few little functionality improvements with Recent Activity and some favorites action. [more inside]
Show #18 of the podcast features recaps from all sections of the site and some talk about new and upcoming features. It was recorded on November 2, 2007 and runs about 70 minutes long. [more inside]

Is the MeFi Writer's Group still operational on Vox? [more inside]
Wow. I've never before posted to the Green and gotten a big fat goose egg in response. [more inside]
pj_rivera normally does this but is evidently out of pocket right now, and nobody's picked this up, so I take it upon myself to post the monthly reminder and get more people joining up: It's time for the November Metafilter Runs Distance Challenge, and we need more people to sign up, so come join. [more inside]

"Recent Activity" bugginess: older posts showing up after my more recent post in the Tut thread. The timestamps are all messed up on that page, but seem OK and are in order in the post itself. [more inside]

Reindeer filter: when giving someone a gift MetaFilter account, could it be possible to write a few lines to this person, like explaining what is Mefi, or why you give it now (best wishes, joining the fray, season's greetings, etc.)? It would help for performing "Santa's magical dance". Thanks.
I fucking hate this "LOLcat" shit. I want to LOLkick whoever started it in the groin. [more inside]
We just launched contacts activity (looks like this, also on the sidebar of the front page showing the most recent 10 things). More explanation inside. [more inside]

followup to this post about Layer Tennis - just a reminder that the next match starts in half an hour [more inside]
So like reddit sends me an email when someone responds to my postings. Is it possible to engineer the system here in a similar fashion to email me when someone posts an answer to my Ask Metafilter question? I think it could make it a more valuable service. Literally a golden cow. Like Baal.
I asked for the headspace post on the writer's strike to be posted to the sidebar. BUT I DIDN'T ASK FOR IT TO BE POSTED TWICE GODDAMNIT!!!

It's that time of year again... time for Santa's magical dance to dispel the swarm of would-be gift-givers descending on AskMe! [more inside]
