Univac: a callout

univac doesn't like SEIU president Andy Stern. Fine. But he's pedaling too close to the turfgrass line for my tastes, and the latest article is pretty shaky.

How to directly answer a question based on flawed assumptions?

"I think it's pretty clear that I'm not asking for your opinion on the idea's viability." Sorry, this question (and response from the asker) is crap.

Gospel God-Damned Truth!

I just wanted to call myself out. As Mark Twain said there are Liars and Damned Liars. And then there is me. Some where in between. I just wanted everybody to not go after Granted for calling me out. Granted it's ok. It was only a matter of time. But I want to assure you, and he, that the "essence" of my stories are indeed true and where they are not "truth" let that not interfere with your enjoyment of them. Even IF said enjoyment is directly proportional to mocking me. Which I not only deserve but enjoy. The question is is THIS the right venue for these sotries? Perhaps we need a "Stories" section. Robocop is Bleeding would have a much deserved creative outlet. And there would be place for my Damnable Lies. Wouldn't THAT be awesome! Anyway. Those of you that wish verification from here on out I will try to create some mechanism for that where I can. Where it won't ruin the point of the story. But I warn you... if, like me, your high is derived from being cynical you may be disappointed in the dull sobriety of the exercise.

Why are multiple links to the Astronomy Picture of the Day OK?

Why isn't this APOD post considered to be a double, triple or quadruple? [MI]

APOD doesn't seem to be an aggregator like BBC or CNN, all they do is post invariably awesome pictures of space everyday. Is it going to be acceptable to post to the front page every time something interesting is posted there (ala the proliferation of youtube links)?

Most sexist lyrics pissing match most unexpected

A thread that reads like a piss-contest between participants who can quote the most sexist lyrics they can think of is not what I'd expect from AskMefi.

Maybe I am mistaken, but from the tag "who goes the hardest on these boards?" I don't think the post is anything but "entertainment" at the expense of women.

A helpful, open place where the emphasis is on sniping

Since it seems the moderators are not reading the thread below, in which the community decided it was perfectly acceptable to launch personal attacks against a person whose only transgression was using the site as it's supposed to be used, I'm bringing it up as its own topic here. Nasty comments that serve no function in helping the poster find a solution are not allowed in AskMe. Allowing them in MeTa -- again, not because the poster has made some transgression or broken some site rule, but simply because he's fat or lonely or makes too much money or whatever else the community has deemed unacceptable today -- seems a completely shitty way of getting around the rules in AskMe, and seems to completely undermine what we as a community are trying to create there: A helpful, open place where the emphasis is on solving problems, not sniping.

MeFi Callout

I don't usually call out bad posts in MeTa, but a Single Link Op Ed (to the WSJ OpJournal, no less) by the author of the classic racist screed "The Bell Curve" (though I Foody may disagree) which is a classic of "stating the obvious" ("Half of all children are below average... except in Lake Wobegon") is NOT the Best of the Web. It's not even worthy of me making a smart ass comment in the thread. Delete with extreme prejudice, mattamyn.

Movie spoiler in AskMe thread

Jessamyn, this comment needs to be deleted. I had flagged it earlier and was surprised that, instead of being deleted, a SPOILER warning had been placed in the thread title. There is no reason for spoilers to be in the thread. The OP is not asking about the movie - they are asking about places to discuss movies.

Hiroshima thread callout

Cleanup on Aisle 57279! What was a really awesome discussion about Hiroshima has now turned to feces-flinging . (This comment being the tipping point, as far as I can see. It's downhill from here.) As someone who was legitimately enjoying the thought provoking comments on the ethics of it all, can we at least move the personal in-fighting over here?

a paragraph break callout

I know that it's Christmas, and filmgeek seems like a great guy, and this is indeed a great post. But are the paragraph breaks really necessary? It seems like they don't really add anything to the post, and they don't make the link any more clear or insightful. I don't really see why they have to be there, and they kind of throw off the eye when browsing the blue.

Sorry if this is the Worst Callout Ever. I realize that the topic of line breaks has been touched on before, but as far as I can tell, we haven't gotten into the paragraph breaks too much. What is the policy on this? (To be clear, I don't intend this as a filmgeek callout, just a paragraph break callout).

His comment was followed up by yet another person mentioning Marathon Man. Meanwhile, in this thread, I was making a bet with myself to see how many comments until we got Nixon and Elvis. The answer is 15. I'm trying to understand why this happens. Is the poster not being clear enough?

What on earth is the point of the Cat on LSD fpp in the blue from Meatbomb?

Surely we don't need telling that administering recreational drugs to animals is wrong, especially in a way that basically just encourages people to gawp. If people have a need to ogle animal cruelty there are plenty of sites to cater to their despicable tastes. Mefi, isn't one of them and I'd like to see Meatbomb's post deleted.

Aiding and abetting in AskMe.

"Help me get this stolen property fixed. Given how I describe receiving it, and given that I'm asking how to get it fixed without getting in trouble, I clearly know it to be stolen property. Don't help the rightful owners get compensated for their losses, but please do help me get their laptops working for my benefit, mm'kay? Because I can't afford to buy a legit laptop, and apparently I can't afford a conscience either."

MeFi link goes to bad stuff

The FPP on Kancept links to a blog which allows scripts in the comments, some of which launch nastiness. When I clicked it in Windows running Firefox 2.0 (having forgotten to update the "noscript" extension) the page tried to launch telnet, make a skype call, launch Outlook Express, and god knows what else before I killed the browser. The comments also display some very, very NSFW animated gifs. I'll be sad to see it go, because the site looks cool, but this is unsafe. I warned people in the thread as well and another MeFite (the astute developer Civil_Disobedient) concurs with my findings. Maybe someone should warn the site admin as well that his blog is being used to launch exploits.
