I will be studying MetaFilter this semester for an e-communities class project

I am a graduate student at the University of Michigan School of Information studying human-computer interaction. I am posting this thread to let you know that I will be studying MetaFilter this semester for an e-communities class project. My term paper will describe MetaFilter’s purpose, the technologies used, roles, identifiers and identities, intergroup relations, norms of behavior, and governance mechanisms. For more information about the course, see http://www.si.umich.edu/~presnick/courses/winter03/684/

I will make my findings available at http://www.noor.bz/ecommunities. Feedback would be welcome any time. I have also included information there about how your privacy will be protected.

If you have any concerns about how I am conducting this study, you may contact me by email at nooraz at umich dot edu.

Thank you!

MeFiMentor: If you're one of the bazillion new folks here and have a question or two that maybe seems too dorky for MetaTalk and too 'Filter related for AskMe, or maybe you just want to run a front page post by someone, feel free to IM someone who's been around the block a bit. MeFi interferring with real life?

How many of you (if any) have had issues with MeFi interferring with real life? I use a pseudonym because way back in the dark ages of BBS's, I regularly indulged in flamewars and I ended up getting prankcalls at all hours and such. Now, I try not to get sucked into flamewars, but I have a feeling I'm still kind of a dick online, so I hang on to a pseudonym. How about you?

full moon and MeFi craziness

Does anyone else feel that there may be a correlation between Metafilter craziness / testiness and the full moon (not to mention the eclipse)? Do any budding statisticians feel like analysing Metatalk posting frequency against lunar phase? Is Miguel a werewolf?

Viewropa community weblog on IRC

European (and EuroLovin') MeFites: IRC (irc.turlyming.com:6667, channel #euro) chat tonight at 9:30 GMT about "Vewropa" new community Euroblog in the making. If you haven't seen it yet, the AskMe question that kicked it off is here. The Wiki that will get you up to date is here. Have a look around, and show up tonight to share your opinions.

the wry wit of fellow MeFites

I come for the FPPs, but I stay for the comments. Articles and whatnot are dandy, but nothing compares to the wry wit of fellow MeFites. What are some of the gems you've come across that have shone so brightly you couldn't help but archive (or even bookmark) something so poignant that a fellow MeFite has shared?

MeFi food swap?

MeFi swap for food? Zpousman asked about it in the moving thread from the gentleman in NYC whose lovely wife misses her home. I am sending a modest care package to the South and have been offered something southern in return - and I don't even know what's down there, let alone crave anything from there. Does someone terribly miss something that can be obtained in Florida? Grumblebee? Are Mrs Grumble's GooGoo Cluster needs met? In my fantasy, someone in upstate NY is dying for something Southern and then turns around and sends me cookies from the Ithaca Bakery.

Dragon Go players?

Since I started this AskMe thread about the game of go a couple of weeks ago, I've taught myself the basics, and I've just opened an account on the Dragon Go Server. Are there any other MeFites around that want to join along with me? Now's the time--if you're an absolute beginner then you'll be certain to have at least one other total newbie to play against, and if you know something about go, then you can start schooling me. (My ID over there is Prospero--same as here.)

Community-building posts just for the fun of it.

Does anyone else think that we need to have a little more fun together on a regular basis? Opportunities to be creative, silly, funny, loony, just for the hell of it, can really disperse tension, and might help us vent negative energy. Certain FPPs come along with a game everyone can play in the comments. People love those, but they're rare. I thought this was a pretty enjoyable spontaneous outpouring of randy energy, but, again, rare. Other sites have Photoshop contests, or other games/challenges. Those seem a bit puerile for us. Getting drunk at meetups is fine, but not practical for all of us. Suggestions? Is this a totally lame line of thought?

taxonomy organization volunteers

As I understand them, Matt's plans for AskMe include some organization of the archives by topic. (I may be wrong about this; if so, stop reading here.) As the archive grows, it becomes a bigger and bigger job going through the individual posts and tagging them with the appropriate (sub)category. So my questions are, first, has any kind of organizing taxonomy been proposed for AskMe, and second, once that's done, would it make sense to organize an effort at distributing the tagging process across willing MeFi volunteers? If so, I volunteer.

That was nice of you, but... (don't post my stuff to mefi)

Er-
I certainly appreciate the thought, and the enthusiasm, but when the time comes I'll buy a text ad like anyone else. I don't think of Metafilter as my personal billboard.
Matt, please kill the thread, or move it back here to "metafilter-related", as that's about as close to relevant to this site as my book is.

How do you find your MeFi time?

I can usually manage enough spare time to read and comment on a few threads a few times per week.
It occurred to me (while reading this MetaTalk thread) that other members must spend a much larger portion of their time here. Just out of curiosity are these folks unemployed or retired or are they spending a big chunk of their work-day here?
I'd also like to add a broader question: how many threads do other people tend to follow during whatever period they spend on MetaFilter?

Opinions, not agenda

I humbly and publicly request a moratorium on referring to opinions as agendas. The linked thread is full of this. Not only does it stifle any sort of honest discussion, debate, or genuine and warranted insulting, it also seems slightly fascistic, Fox News-ish, and embarrassing.

One asshole ruining it for everyone

Yesterday I said jokingly "I'm not a big fan of gatherings -- it seems when you get enough people together in one place, the chances of one asshole ruining it for everyone goes up exponentially." and someone went and proved it. This is why letting new users can be problematic.

strange relationship between posts and the posters' usernames

We know that nofundy usually posts about "Fundies", hama7 has posted Hama-Net, and Vidiot's first post was about TV newscasts, but hasn't the relationship between posts and the posters' usernames gotten a little strange lately?

First, I saw Keyser Soze's AskMe about "my friend getting busted by the cops" and its MetaTalk follow-up. But then I noticed posts from PenDevil about rewriting the Chinese Constitution, Dome-O-Rama about an Act of Congress, psychotic venom about these depressing times, loquacious about Rumsfeld's words, ferociouskitty about howwasshe.com, and four panels about China's Building Blitz.

And AskMe has a problem with the French from staggernation and a mouse in a messy room from Slimemonster.

Am I just going overboard when I see the connections between a car insurance site and mr crash davis, Jay-Z and soundofsuburbia, or Sudden Oak Death and barkle (oops, that should be bargle) ? If so, just say "adjust your meds, Wendell", and we'll leave it at that. If not, I'll be back tonight with a post about Wendell Willkie.

MetaFilter: Grand Royal experiment

What if everyone ponied up, say, five bucks to a PayPal account? That's $70K. We make that our max bid, and if we lose, we either get it back or make a donation to a music charity.

While the MetaFilter: Grand Royal experiment sounds noble, it would likely have to be conducted "off-site, yet in spirit". (Unless Matt's anxious for another burgeoning project to worry over...)

So how do we bell this cat, and how many brave mice want to participate?

MeFi Numerology Time!

It's do-it-yourself MeFi Numerology Time! 17171, MetaFilter's most recent member has a very good number. So do Rich, who is 123; Eirixon, who is 11111 and, of course, Matt who is number 1 in more ways than one. Now that membership is opening again, good numbers, like primes, become increasingly rare. How long will 17171 remain the coolest? And are there any even cooler numbers attributed to non-posters, like the beastly Hafif, who is 666? [Please delete if this is too silly for words.]

Evolution of writers at MeFi

I'm sorry if this is a stupid, self-indulgent post (so no problems if it's deleted forthwith) but it's based on over two years of reading MetaFilter almost completely. It certainly seems interesting to me - but I may be wrong. See? I've noticed several users becoming ever more adept at expressing themselves: from more drawn-out to pithier; from abstruser to clearer; from all-over-the-place to more-to-the-point. Does anyone else find, by merely participating here and being exposed to MeFi's notoriously severe critique, that they're writing better than when they first joined? Specially foreigners (or non-Americans) like me? To what an extent is MeFi interaction good practice for writers?

I discovered TRIBE.net a couple of weeks ago, and I'm smitten. This little anti-FRIENDSTER/nuevo-FIREFLY is currently in beta, but seems to be making the rounds... and there's not better time to make your mark, than during beta.

So why bring it up, here? Well, cuz there's a Metafilter tribe (a sub-set of the social network, not unlike a USENET group)... and I want y'all to come and play!

Shirky on Internet Groups

Shirky on Internet Groups: All groups of any integrity have a constitution. The constitution is always partly formal and partly informal. At the very least, the formal part is what's substantiated in code -- "the software works this way."

There are so many interesting relationships here. I would enjoy a search function that queried two users and parsed them for shared threads.
