Dangers of group mentality?

Does anybody remember a link posted that referenced the dangers of group mentality? I've been looking for days now and its making me crazy that I can't find it. Thanks

An interesting article about building an online community and the choices the Author made . It also talks about other online communities and why he avoided certain features popular on other sites.

Choosing to remain anonymous, then being an ass

If you can't beat em, join em, eh? I have finally reached my tolerance threshold for people who choose—and are allowed—to be anonymous on this community site. If folks can remain anonymous and hurl invectives toward my wife (who is not even a MeFi member) then the time has come where I too must become anonymous.

I know it has been discussed before, but anonymity has no place in a community such as this. If people can't stand behind their own words then perhaps it is best if they hold their tongues?

political predispositions out in the open just this once

Hey all. Yesterday the user aeschenkarnos provided a cool link for a political compass. I thought it might be somewhat worthwhile, and possibly entertaining, if just this one time, for the sake of posterity, we could all put our political predispositions out in the open. We might even be able to better answer that age-old FAQ question: Are we guilty of lefty groupthink?

Demographics of planet MeFi

Not so much a feature as a one-time feature. The thread on tort reform (quite entertaining and refreshingly civil, given the number of comments it spawned) left me surprised that so many MeFites are attorneys. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
But I often wonder about the demographics of planet MeFi.
Isn't there a simple way we could have a town census (a/s/l occupation etc. It would be mildly fascinating to have such info in our profiles as well, but maybe thats raising the veil too high.

Fat through Short: Metafilterists as Common Populace

Fat or short , it seems like Metafilter is the internet's answer to the island of misfit nerds. As a short guy (we prefer the term "diminutive"), I'm curious about how many of the 16000 of us would be condidered "average" people. Can the members of MetaFilter be considered a fair cross-section of the population?

What do we think about kuro5hin?

What's the relationship between kuro5hin and MetaFilter?

Searching MeFi for discussion about kuro5hin.org didn't answer my question. The site founder, Rusty Foster, does have a MeFi account, but his comments don't help much, either.

It's been said at both sites that the readership overlaps, and both sites seem to be compatriots in the community blogosphere, but I was somewhat surprised that K5 readers (well two, at least :-) didn't buy buying my assertion that K5 didn't have to link to a certain story because MeFi already had done so. Then I realized that MeFi readers would probably say the feeling's mutual.

I'm relatively new to MeFi, but I think I'm a quick study. It seems to me that because of that site's structure, K5 is more suited to long, developed, original stories. Its sophisticated mojo system (comment ratings, etc.) and nested comments allow more thorough discussions. But MeFi feels much more like a traditional blog -- updated several times a day with brief links and comments. K5 favors technology and culture stories, while MeFi is much more eclectic.

I hope other, more experienced MeFi members who also hang out at kuro5hin.org will elaborate.

Anyone want to see my vacation slides?

On initial inspection, this post by y2karl appears to me more suited to his own weblog. For me it just doesn't seem to belong on the front page. It's long winded, with lots of "this" for the links. Yet it seems to work as well..? It seems to highlight a desire for the 'community' to exchange not only ideas and opinions but also experiences and holiday destinations....
Perhaps it's a 'bridge' of a post that signifies a new direction for MeFi?

I'm going to draw attention to this thread

At the risk (feh, who am I kidding?) of pouring salt in the proverbial wound, I'm going to draw attention to this thread. These two users were apparently engaged in some buffoonery, and perhaps the community was a little harsh, but their reactions really made me mad. Do I, or we, or MeFi in general, really need these guys maliciously baiting other users?

imminent death of Metafilter

Posited : that the 'imminent death of Metafilter' that has been so long and often predicted is finally beginning to happen. Exhibit A : A tiny truncated little MeTa flatpage. Exhibit B : An average of about 12 comments each for the limp and lackadaisical posts in the blue in the last 24 hours... Is the Fat Lady singing? Is that a croco-tear in my eye?

Dreamhost Shut Down My Sites. Help?

Yesterday I was accused of spamming by my host. Today 10+ websites and my email service has been shut down.
(cockybastard.com, Globalgasm.com, etc.)
I am *hoping* I can resolve this asap. But what if they refuse to listen to me.
I'm struck by how helpless I am. Has this ever happened to anyone here? I am close to actually driving to the Dreamhost offices in person.

webloggers should cluster themselves into like-minded groups

SDB suggests that webloggers cluster themselves into like-minded groups, and cross-link accordingly. Disagreements (including here) are what he calls "religious" in nature: "A-list" vs. warblogger, "E/N" vs. "A-list", etc. Does Steve's structuralist argument hold up? Are his characterizations fair or accurate? Do you slot yourself into a group? Are the blogs you link to in a similar vein as yours?

MeFites do awesome things - why am I sitting here reading MeFi?

I'm having a mid-life crisis and it's all Metafilter's fault! This is especially upsetting as I'm only 31 and this means I'll be dead by 62. Honestly, though, the more I read about what others here are creating and persuing, the more I find myself wondering what the hell I'm doing with my life. Perhaps this is good, in that maybe this will motivate me to get off my ass and contribute something to the world. I'm just wondering, am I the only one who fells like this reading the 'filter? Is this actually a mid-life crisis or am I just going crazy?

Cliques in MeFi

I've been reading everyone's MeTa post's about "What's wrong with MeFi," and thinking on it had for awhile. I've decided that it's not right vs. left, old-timer vs. newbie, or even dumb wacky-news items or pancakes.
Basically, as the community has grown larger, everyone's broken off into little cliques. Now there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, birds of a feather and all; however, back in high school I used to love introducing mebers of the various cliques to eachother and(somtimes) watching the cultural exchange(for lack of a better term) that happened when they realized the other clique was cool, too. Unfortunately, most of the time the cliques just snarked at eachother.
In my early days at MeFi, the various subgroups resisted this temptation, but not lately. Hopefully we can turn back the clock.

moonlighting mefites

Everywhere I look on the Internet I find my fellow Metafilterians moonlighting somewhere. Just today I came across a very interesting web site called Cafoon/Erotica Rules, where the very latest contributions come from poster heroes such as owillis and feelinglistless.

Forget SportsFilter and Plastic.com(where the great holgate is in finest form). Come clean now! What are the Metafilterians' secret haunts? And are there any steadfast, exclusivist, MetaFilter-only loyalists left? [I, a minor traitor, confess to lurking very discretely on filepile, Kuro5hin, fark and a certain red cricket where Crazy Uncle Joepontificates - but that is all...]

anyways, i'm one of those filthy, filthy livejournal users, and listed in my interests is 'metafilter'. out of the thousands of people who use lj, i've found there's a total of 8 people that share such an interest. but... i'm not sure if they're actually active members. so my question is... is there anyone here that IS both an active user of both mefi and lj, or do they cancel each other out?

What's the jargon word for a doublepost thread that's obviously doomed, and which gets quickly taken over by a cheerful bunch of people with absolutely nothing to say, and no fear of MeTa reproach because the thread could disappear at any moment? I must say, posting in these threads, I've never felt so alive.

More live play-by-play threads

"State of Union play by play " post triggered a probably unoriginal thought - scheduling more events/times in advance for live play-by-play threads, something for everyone, eg Oscar or Grammy night, Super Bowl, other big bang televised events. Wouldn't it be a blast to rant and rave all together about this and that on TV? (this probably a double post, but since searching didnt bring it up, I will patiently await the first comment post alert)

Snark will be the end of MeFi

It's not the petty insults, it's the rank, disrespectful and pretentious sarcasm that's ruining discussions on MeFi. This thread is only the latest example. As discussions go, its useless. The topic, however, merits a reasoned dialogue. I could cite a few examples in which I've crossed the line. I feel comfortable that I've held my worst instincts in check most often; others have not.

It gets worse all the time. It's now customary among the hawkish set to lead off every comment with a sarcastic jibe, instead of an honest reaction. > >

I really hope that mathowie isn't bothered by me posting this here, but since he's talking about in on his site, I'm going to assume it's okay. Matt's dad has had a stroke, and is in hospital.
