User Callout
I just wanted to commend Carol Anne for being linkeriffic. Glad you spend so much time here.
When I click on a thread, I can't save the info to my computer
When I click on a thread, (PDA, or Secret Santa story) I cannot save the info to my computer, is this a problem with a my computer(or skill) or something with MeFi?
Boot the old, bring in the new
Apologies for being persistent re new membership. How about gracioulsy booting members off that have not posted a link after 1 (or 3 or 6) months to give eager new members a chance ? (of course, there may be no such animal)
Who owns complete Metafilter threads?
Lets assume some one out there believes a particular Mefi thread can potentially have value in other media (eg, TV script, syndicated column, book, etc) I undersatnd authors own their own posts (if I read Mefi correctly) but who legally owns the complete thread? Am I thinking about this correctly?
Search users function?
How useful would a "Search Users" function be? You could search for a particular username, or location, or whatever. There have been times where I wondered how many people were from a particular city (or at least owned up to it in their user profile). How difficult and/or useful would something like this be?
(BTW, Matt, the copyright at the bottom of MeTa still says 2000.)

How come new admissions are frozen but the number of members keeps creeping up?
How come new admissions are frozen but the number of members(12322 when last I checked)keeps creeping up? Asylum seekers? Sleight of hand on the part of undesirable aliens? I think we should be told...

Metafilter front page filter
OK, there were 40 front-page posts yesterday. Just for laffs, here's a MetaFilter front page filter. Change the number after the ? in the URL to change the highest numbered user whose posts you'll see. Old school!
(Here's the source.)
I'll make this filter private soon, 'cause I just wrote it to support this suggestion: I think something like this should be a MetaFilter preference. Anyone else?

Users growing: stats available?
Matt, I would like to thank you for hosting this fabulous forum. I have learned so much about the wonderful world of the web, most recently such things as E/N sites :) and cam girls and how some people react to them. :) And I have a question. I have been noticing the numbers of Metafilter members rising steadily on the front page (and kudos to you for hosting all 11,000+ of us). There was a rise in members (pun unintended!) right after you came back from vacation and another big bump following the horrible events of Sept. 11. Could you tell us how many people have joined since Sept. 11, since you came back from vacation, and say, since the beginning of this year? Do you have those statistics handy? I think it would be interesting to see how many of us have joined in what time periods, even from the beginning!
With traffic dying down, is it possible to re-open the front page to members?

Where did everybody go?
I'm wondering if a lot of the names I've come to know and love/hate have left entirely or are just hanging around silently shaking their heads or what....(more inside)
I'm getting hate mail from fellow MeFians
This may be a good reason for people to take down their e-mail addresses from their user descriptions. (more)
Thread/Comment and User Growth statistics, July 2001
Thread/Comment and User Growth statistics are up for July. This is the first month that threads and comments actually dropped slightly, largely because new user signups are still disabled. Also, we broke 10,000 user IDs yesterday. Congratulations, Ricci.
User Statistics
Perhaps a way, if not to tell *who* is currently logged in, at least a count of how many Mefites are in the house? I ask only because I'm on the other side of the Pacific from most of you (or the other side of the Eurasian landmass), and, well, etc.
Mefi member count discrepancy
Someting simple, actually (I hope). On the front page of MeFi, if you're not logged in, the member count is 9342. When you're logged in the member count is 9075.
Have we leveled off at 9075 users?
The number of users has been at 9075 for a few days now. Have we levelled off?
take a look at what the numbers say
Considering all the hub-bub we keep getting about vets VS oldies, signal-to-noise, volume posters, etc, I just finished wasting a huge volume of time crunching the may stats based on individual posters - all 310 of 'em. For whatever it's worth, take a look at what the numbers say about who's posting what and how successfully. info inside
Hatemail from MeFi.
I feel so darn tootin' speshul -- I just recieved my first MeFi hate mail, anonymous or otherwise! Do I get a prize?
Should I be commending perogi for at least signing the email? Or are hate mailers still cowards for not spewing publicly on MeFi or MeTa?

Multi-account MeFi abuser is back
If he hates MetaFilter so much, why does he keep this up?
Remove user number from username links?
Would it be useful to change the username links from:
posted by snowmelter
to:
posted by snowmelter?
I just think it's a bit unfortunate to see someone's rank being used to judge the usefulness of his or her argument.

would you like to know where all MeFi users are from?
Topic drift... would you like to know where all MeFi users are from? Discuss.
Clavdivs says cleaver things
clavdivs: "...My friend was right, people in this site are mostly snilveling ka-nits. I was mislead....say something stupid less harm...i will pounce and you WILL look stupid. Corrections are for editors -wanna job, you clean up my words, and i will say cleaver things for you, about you, and to you."

MeFi user demographics
Curious, Matt, if you or anyone has studied the distribution of membership: East-West; International; Age, Gender, and all that...
when will the number of registered users will surpass the number of threads
So, anyone want to venture a guess as to when the number of registered users will surpass the number of threads?
How about a bit more detail on users than 'nnnn members' ?
How about a bit more detail on users than 'nnnn members' ?
ie. user activity: the number/percentage of the members that viewed the site, posted a comment, posted a link in the last month.
Estimated number of non members viewing the site would be good context too. [I was reading MetaFilter daily for over a year before joining]
Request number 2 for a MetaTalk search comes from me.
And couldn't the thread category, when posting to MetaTalk, default to the topic you came from? [Most people would view the topic before starting a thread here]

Here comes number 4000
This afternoon or evening, the member with user number 4000 will join MetaFilter. Will they win anything? Should they win anything? Suggestions? (What about one free double post?)
New Blurbs in Profiles
I added a simple addition to user profiles, for a blurb about ourselves, and I hope everyone uses it. I threw together a question about usernames and getting started on the internet.
I find usernames (especially unusual ones) often have an odd story behind them, and people's first experiences with the internet are sometimes funny, sometimes interesting.
I spilled my guts, now you go spill yours.

Currently online?
There has been 1 link and 16 comments posted since your last visit
17 MetaFilter members currently online
Neat! What exactly does the "currently online" tracker track? (Uhhh, this is new, right? I'm not confused?)
Banning a User
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and I know there will be detractors, but I'm going to ban this Ed V... guy soon. I built this place, and it wasn't for trolls like this. My reasons are as follows.
He's mucking up the place. It's as if you were talking to people at a party and some guy barges in on the conversation, saying outlandish things just to get a rise out of people.
It's got nothing to do with his positions, it's that everything that comes out sounds like trolling bait for other people to argue with. I've seen it on countless numbers of online forums. The last place I remember seeing it was Slate's boards (called, "the fray" heh). It seems there was a small pack of very conservative posters that would tromp on any thread that mentioned abortion. Every response from them was pure trolling, and usually done in all caps. Every one of their posts would be followed by 5x as many posts refuting everything they had said, but then they'd follow up with more trolling. It rendered any sensible discussion meaningless, which is what I think was the inteneded purpose.
So that Ed guy is gone very soon, and I don't feel bad about doing it.

November Stats
I hope this doesn't come off as pompous or anything, I just wanted to show everyone the metafilter stats for November. A few things to note: the times are in GMT, so they're 8 hours behind the real time (there isn't a 9am lull in requests, that's actually a 1am lull, PST). I started keeping track of bytes transferred about half way through the month, so the data transfers are off. 330,000 page views is pretty wacky though. As usual, the search requests are mostly disturbing. I don't want to meet most of the people doing those searches.
2000 members and counting!
november 13, 2000, 4:10pm: 2005 members
I just want to say wow, and congratulations, matt.
so far, I must say (napster/nader/election mania notwithstanding) I think metafilter is scaling beautifully. well done.

Search feature to sort links/comments by username?
Is it possible to add a search feature that would allow someone to sort links/comments made by username?
MeFi post as callout
I think starting a new front-page thread just to call another user out is going too far, especially when said user explicitly asks to take it to e-mail.
User complaint
Yeah, there's a bug where that Steven Den Beste guy gets to post to the front page of Metafilter, multiple times per day, even. Any timeline on when we can expect this to be fixed?
Which is worse to complain about, people or things?
I am compelled to wonder:
If we tallied 1) posts where people are bitching about taking something to metatalk vs 2) posts where people are bitching about people bitching about taking something to metatalk (an extra half-point for pre-empting the first-level bitching), who would come out on top?
stop the madness.

Spike in Traffic?
Is it just me, or has MF traffic spiked recently? Matt, you have the logs, has something specific happened?
