Userphrases vs Usernames
I'd like to open a discussion on the seemingly growing trend of new users choosing a phrase as a username. My opinion of these username choices is _____. My suggestion to Matt is _____.

MeFi Locations
Where do MeFites live? I've been aware for a while of our denizens living in Chile and So. Korea, but recently have seen postings from Uganda and Japan as well. Is there any listing and/or breakdown of members' self-reported locations similar to the professions list?
I'm just wondering how many other Las Vegas MeFites are out there

Changing Screen Names
All I want to do is change my log in or screen name. I have searched the site, and see only that I should email Matt; and I have tried that, but he hasn't had the time, I guess, to respond.
I would rather not have to re-up to get a new name on here. Any suggestions?

Blocking Posting History?
This Mefi user is blocking their posting history. Should they be allowed to?
is anything happening with the members nearby feature?
As a follow-up to this post from last year, is anything happening with the members nearby feature being extended to cover people that don't have a zip code? If the latitude and longitude thing is too much work can we group people outside the US by country?
Which fictional character is this Mefite?

IRL, do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?
I was out at Jillian's in Boston yesterday, and I saw another MeFite there who I recognized from a previous MeFi meetup. Thing is, I didn't remember her real name, and I'm not sure that she'd remember mine. Should I have said hi, and if so, what would be the rules on having friends of MeFites meet each other? Do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?
RSS feeds for comments and tags? Maybe per user?
I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.

Pre-MeMail email etiquette question
Last week I posted a music question to AskMe. To be honest, I really, really wanted one particular user to answer (he/she did) because I know from their previous answers that they know a lot about recording/playing music. What I want to know, though, is whether it would have been considered bad etiquette to email this person directly, after hunting down their address via the home URL on their profile. Basically - an unsolicited email. If you received such an email from a fellow Mefite would you consider it spamming and/or somehow taking advantage of the "community"?
Where do I ask a question about MetaFilter and how it's used?
Do I ask this here (or has it been asked before) ??
I want to ask people just how they organize their MeFi/MeTa/AskMe screens/feeds/time - I'm not actually asking yet as I want to think about framing the question a bit more (so it might become wider surfing focussed or not), but should it go here or in AskMe?
(but people might answer anyway so it could be a moot point I guess)

Could I suggest that e-mail addresses are hidden...?
[My Little Pony] There seems to be a little concern now that registrations are open again, that for the bargain price of five dollars a spammer could get access to a large number of e-mail addresses. Could I suggest that e-mail addresses are hidden and a posting form put in it's place so we can remain easily contactable?
pages after the first show the wrong range of comments
When you show all comments by a user on Ask Metafilter, the pages after the first show the wrong range of comments. For instance, this page says it's showing comments 101-150, but it's really showing comments 1-150. It works fine on the blue.

The MetaFilter community played a nice, bright part in my day today
The MetaFilter community played a nice, bright part in my day today. First I woke up to find an email from another member who offered to send me a car stereo that had been sitting around in his closet for a while and would solve my iPod/car stereo problem. Best answer, indeed! During the day I scheduled a meeting with a little writing group I met via one of our own at a meetup. I'm definitely looking forward to that. Then I got pictures in my email from our own multi-talented DaShiv, of an art show I wanted to see last Friday but didn't make it to. The SF group rumbled all day about another meetup date soon, possibly when #1 is in town. I can't wait for that! Then to cap it all off, tonight I came home to find my roommate had a guest over. She recognized me and it turned out we'd been introduced at the MeFi/MoFi meetup in Berkeley. Small world!
Nothing earth shattering here, but good stuff all around. I didn't even really think twice about this stuff until just now when some said "Whatever community was once to be found here is long dead, unless you are perhaps looking for a community based on vitriol and snark.". Perhaps gd779 is kidding, or thinking of certain glory days of rapping online with old cronies now gone, and perhaps those days are over for those folks. But for me, anyway, here, now, the community is a goodly part of actual life, not just an "online" community, and certainly more than a cauldron of blind vitriol.

Would you like to help out u.n. owen?
You all remember how u.n. owen was set to audition for Jeopardy a couple months back? Recall how a string of bad luck kept her from doing so?
Seems things are still bad for her. When I saw this post in AskMeFi I contacted her just to check in and see how things were going. She's in a bit of a bind and I hope it doesn't embarrass her, but I thought there might be a few MeFites with a little extra pocket cash. Anyone feeling altruistic? [Details inside]

Discussion of y2karl's posting style (Feb. 2005)
Discussion of y2karl's small quote posting style in this thread got me thinking. I wonder what a pie chart or Venn diagram showing a breakdown of his contributions to MeFi into quotes, small quotes, alt-text quotes, his own words, etc. would look like.
I'm rescinding my offer to contribute to the Metafilter scholarship
I'm rescinding my offer to contribute to the Metafilter scholarship. I don't like the direction in which the site is going, and I won't be participating any longer. I would email Matt directly, but I made the offer in open forum, so I feel it's only fair to withdraw it here as well. I promise not to let the door hit me in the ass on the way out.
I think Matt should require an e-mail address to be posted.
It's really frustrating that so many Mefi people don't have e-mail addresses posted on their member page. In fact, it's really inexcusable given the ability to obtain free secondary and terciary e-mail addresses.
While no one can be forced to read their e-mail (or have the Mefi address mails forwarded to a primary one, I think Matt should require an e-mail address to be posted.

Connection Timeout members
Upon refreshing the home page, I noticed that MeFi has "Connection Timeout members". Searching the archives makes it seem like I may be unique in seeing this minor bug.
Small bug
Small bug: on the "all of a user's comments to MeFi" page (search_comments.cfm), if one has commented more than once in the same thread, the article appears once per comment, each with one "jump to the comment in this thread" link. I'm pretty sure this is new behavior. Ask.Me and Metatalk responses are still grouped together.

Ad Hominem logical fallacy: Attacking a person instead of their argument. Or, in this case, attacking them because of a perfectly valid comment.
AskMe today regarding changing the stylesheet on user profiles
I swear that there was an AskMe today regarding changing the stylesheet on user profiles. I can't remember who posted the question, but they linked to a few profiles that they liked. Now I can't find the question. Was it deleted or am I experiencing hallucinations?
Old threads link usernames to posts, not users
Bug: old threads have the poster username linking to the thread with the same number as their usernumber. Example (working). Example (nonworking). Only in the post; the username links in comments are fine.
MetaTalk for the logged in only?
This is probably an annoying pony to add, but is there any way we can get a flag added to MetaTalk posts so that they'll only be visible to a user who is logged in?
Does anyone want my account?
I never use this name/account, so I was wondering if anyone was interested in taking it over...

The effects of noobs on MetaFilter.
Not in defense of noobs. Because of noobs (myself included), the sky is falling and trends clearly show that metafilter is getting rapidly out of control!! Seriously though, this analysis shows that the "average age" of a metafilter poster has dropped by almost 200 days, I am in whichever camp wants to extend the incubation period for noobs like us...
Can we close signups now?
Can we close the door now? I'm genuinely happy to have some new blood, but here's the problem. Pretty much everyone who's been reading the site with their noses against the glass has been let in. Hereafter, we're going to get a bunch of folks who happen to be wandering by, and know nothing of how things are done around here. (I don't know if that's the case with notmtwain, I'm only using his/her post as an example because it glares so.) We can always open it up again later, but can we have a moratorium on new users? Just for now? Please?
Add something about other online communites to the profile page.
It would be nice if the question Are there any other community weblogs where you regularly participate? could be added to the standard welcome questionnaire ("What's the deal with your nickname? When did you first start using the Internet?" etc.) [More inside.]

$5, same as in town: perks for signing up
Are these new logins, having paid, getting to see the new ad-free MeFi?
Does the $5 fee come with an uptime guarantee?
Lastly, will Mathowie pay me $5 to rescind my login? Really lastly, what is the returns policy for those who have paid their $5?

Hell hath frozenth overth. New user signups are back on, for a one-time five buck cover.
Mefi userbase: more Chstian-right post GOP-favoring election?
Is it just me, or has the recent GOP win emboldened the christian right here at mefi? More inside folks...
It's another idea for rating threads/users!
It's another idea for rating threads/users!
Dig this. On Everything2, they have the concept of cools. If you're very good, you can get a cool, which you can then assign to a post.
Rather than rating all threads, users, etc. Maybe everyone could get 1 gold star to spend every month (week, year, lifetime). And gold-starred posts could get a special billing?

I think I may have found the perfect metaphor for the Mefi network experience
I think I may have found the perfect metaphor for the Mefi network experience: it's like travelling, with high spirits and pleasant anticipation, to visit an out-of-town friend for the weekend - someone you've always liked and with whom you have a great deal in common, but once you get there, they are, like, rushing to put a coaster under your glass, and looking at you nervously as lower yourself into what must obviously be the wrong chair. And they're all like,"Ooh. Could you please not walk on that carpet? It just gets dirty so easily." and "Oh, no! Don't use that soap - it's really just decorative; here's the soap we use." and "Oh. Thanks for taking care of the dishes, but we don't put our glassware in the dishwasher." And when they come into the guest room to say good night, they tell you what time breakfast will be on the table, and then close the window you just opened to alleviate some of the stifling heat. "Insects, you know. We get a lot of 'em out here." And the next morning you have your bags repacked and sitting out on the front porch before dawn, ready for the first possible opportunity to get the hell out of there, and they are all like "Oh, no! You're not leaving so soon are you? We were having so much fun!" [SI more DE]
Was this user banned?
has 111 been banned ?
How old are you?
so who's the oldest mefite here? the youngest?
Community-building posts just for the fun of it.
Does anyone else think that we need to have a little more fun together on a regular basis? Opportunities to be creative, silly, funny, loony, just for the hell of it, can really disperse tension, and might help us vent negative energy. Certain FPPs come along with a game everyone can play in the comments. People love those, but they're rare. I thought this was a pretty enjoyable spontaneous outpouring of randy energy, but, again, rare. Other sites have Photoshop contests, or other games/challenges. Those seem a bit puerile for us. Getting drunk at meetups is fine, but not practical for all of us. Suggestions? Is this a totally lame line of thought?

Erased My Profile
OK, I'm a dumbhead. I overwrote all the stuff in my profile page by accident. Neither the Wayback Machine nor Google have a cache of it. Is there any way to get it back?
I'm curious to know if anyone has heard from Keyser Soze since his latest incident.
I'm curious to know if anyone has heard from Keyser Soze since his latest incident. He hasn't posted since that date and there is no email address in his profile, otherwise I would have contacted him directly.
How do you find your MeFi time?
I can usually manage enough spare time to read and comment on a few threads a few times per week.
It occurred to me (while reading this MetaTalk thread) that other members must spend a much larger portion of their time here. Just out of curiosity are these folks unemployed or retired or are they spending a big chunk of their work-day here?
I'd also like to add a broader question: how many threads do other people tend to follow during whatever period they spend on MetaFilter?

Be Nice to the N00bs.
I'd like to remind everyone that we have some new users, and we really ought to encourage them as much as possible. While I agree entirely with the Q-man's sentiment, name-calling is counterproductive to the site, especially when it's a user's first FPP.
This isn't so much a call-out on quonsar, but a reminder that discouraging the new users is detrimental to the health of the site.
