User Census
Hi everyone, longtime lurker, first time poster. During my days in the wilderness poking my nose in here and reading religiously, I've always wondered if there had ever been a "metapoll" conducted of the membership. If there has, please excuse my ignorance (I couldn't find any mention of it). If not, I think it would be the greatest thing ever! Politics, favourite music, movie, country of origin, languages spoken. I'd love to know more about the gang in a non privacy-violating way...Not that I'd know how to go about doing it. Any suggestions?
Abandoned Usernames
How many of the 17,173 MeFi users actually use the site? Assuming the answer is not 100%, is it possible to determine if/when a user profile has been abandoned? And then offer those abandoned profiles to new users?
Salon's feature on Perverted Justices quotes Metafilter comments
Salon's feature on the porn chat-room vigilante site Perverted Justice includes the lazy journalist's best friend: non-attributed man on the street quotes from MetaFilter.
is it possible to start a listing of Canadian MeFi members' postal codes?
Following up on Frasermoo's MeTa post from the fourth ("How international are we?"), is it possible to start a listing of Canadian MeFi members' postal codes? [more inside]
User Statistics
I've noticed a lot of threads asking how many "real" members there are. Would it be difficult to add a counter to the front page that says something like: "There are currently x# users logged in"?
I want to delete my account
in most communities, you can leave when you're ready to move on.
User Callout
Dear 111, I wanted to email this to you but you listed no email address. I thought you were rude in the "brights" thread and wanted to let you know. Your position was unhelpful, off-topic, and served to intentionally deflect attention from the topic at hand.
The origin of geourl and finding MeFi members near you
I really like geourl and wanted to know which metafilter members lived near me, so I programmed it today. If you're logged in, and viewing a member's page that has a zip code, it'll do a lookup for all the other members within a 1/2 degree of longitude/latitude which is about 25 miles. Scroll down on my user page to see everyone near me.
Generational issues
Old farts; hippies; soixante-huitards; baby boomers - there are a few of us on MetaFilter who are over 40, aren't there? To what extent is a lot of internal conflict here attributable to simple generational differences that are commonplace - though no less violent and, I should add, inevitable and ultimately unimportant - in our everyday lives?
When will signups reopen?
MeFi/MeTa not taking new members - Any one got any idea how long for and what new gadgets we're expecting?
Was this account hijacked?
I'm having trouble reconciling this MetaTalk post with this user page and oh, this first comment and this later comment.
I'm thinking not the same person...
Hijacked account? somebody borrow mom's password?

MeFi census?
The success of the Political Compass thread a few posts back got me to thinking about an interesting notion: Might it be time for a MeFi census?
Ages on Profiles?
Slithy_Tove makes a remarkable point. I know one can easily lie about it. But how about an age entry on our profile page?
What are some great profile pages?
vacapinta's extraordinary user page sadly no longer seems to be updated - any other user page treats I'm missing out on?

MeFi user survey about MeTa topics?
How about a MetaFilter user survey about some of the ideas that have been bandied about in MetaTalk lately: recommending or rating posts, enforced posting delays, giving better posters higher posting frequency, etc.
Is it really true that older MetaFilterians are leaving in droves?
Reality Check Time: Is it really true that older MetaFilterians are leaving in droves? Apart from Evanizer [Is there anything we can to do get him back? Like compiling our favourite Evanizer moments?], my own perception is that they're not. At least one valued member (y6y6y6) has returned. Although it's increasingly repeated, here and elsewhere (and in danger of becoming a blotter-meme for every random drop of dissatisfaction leaked by users everywhere), how many older members have actually upped and gone since the recent influx of newbies, as the proto-meme pretends? And, if some have indeed left, does anyone know in which green pastures they now roam?

Welcome New Member banner?
Now that membership has opened again, how about greeting new members on the front page just after they've joined with something like, 'Metafilter welcomes [insert link to username and profile'. It's always good to get a hug when you arrive at a party.

Is it time to reconsider a one-post-per-week limit?
A lot of days it seems like newer members make an equal number of posts compared to all other users combined. - jonah

Frankly, there are too many things being posted now that we have all these new members ... - mathowie

New user signups are back on. 20 people a day are going to be allowed in, starting at noon each day. Only one signup per person, per day as well. Report any probs with it here.
Helping Newbies
As we have seen the buzz, new members will be coming in the future. Sprinkled in a few MeTa threads have been ideas, such as a FAQs and mentoring, to help new members learn the ropes and Mefi history. I have an idea to primarily help new members, but it could eventually benefit everyone.

Just how international are we?
Just how international are we?
It seems to me all the other well-known and popular American and European community weblogs and websites are far more parochial and North America-centred than MetaFilter. Not so with us. This makes, I think, all the difference. We have (off the top of my head and as far as I know) members from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Holland, india, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, The Philippines, Portugal, Scotland, Wales, Spain...and who knows what other countries?
So just how widely cast is the MetaFilter users' web?[Lurkers: Please break your vow of silence, just this once, if you possibly can!] Me, I suspect it spans the whole beautiful Planet...

User Stats
Is it technically possible, without too much bandwidth "wastage" I hope, to have a list of all the MeFites loggen in at any given moment? I remember there was an "X number of people currently logged in" feature a while ago If Matt decides to bring it back, is it possible to actually have the names of those logged in?
Could it be the first known sockpuppet? (June 2002)
I'm going to draw attention to this thread
At the risk (feh, who am I kidding?) of pouring salt in the proverbial wound, I'm going to draw attention to this thread. These two users were apparently engaged in some buffoonery, and perhaps the community was a little harsh, but their reactions really made me mad. Do I, or we, or MeFi in general, really need these guys maliciously baiting other users?
I don't know about you, but I'm curious
I don't know about you, but I'm curious. The membercount has been hovering at 14000 for the last week (?) or so, and just this evening went to 14001. Strange that the profile for user 14001 says "member since: March 15, 2002." Is there an interesting story here, or do I just need another hobby?
What happened on on December 21, 2001 that so many people joined?
Emails in Profiles
I think it's fantastic that our email addresses are now shielded from non-members, but that still means that 13,000 people are free to send anonymous flames to any member--or to sign them up for spam. How about this: Instead of the profile page displaying the email address, it shows an email form. One would have to be logged in to use it, the sender's username would show up in the email, and the recipient's address would remain hidden.
Page of all user weblogs?
hey, remember when matt when on vacation and he posted a list of all the sites of all the users?
does that page still exist?

How do we feel about opening new user sign-ups again?
Since Matt is getting a new server, he mentioned turning new sign-ups back on. How do we feel about this?
Fake biographies of MeFi users?
Insomnyuk said: "Someone should try to write a biography about a person they've never met, using Google."
Cool idea. How about doing it with Metafilter? Anybody want to volunteer to do somebody else? Might be fun to see how close it's possible to get, just based on profile page & posts in here and out front.

announcement: non-logged in users can no longer see contact info.
I made a slight change to the user pages. Logged in users see everything as it was before, but non-logged in users don't see any contact information except for websites URLs. I had long worried about the spam thwarting measures I have employed not being good enough, and I've also been hearing about non-members hassling members for memberships, posting, etc. So with the new change, non-members won't be able to harvest addresses, or send you an email (unless you've got it listed on your homepage URL somewhere), and they won't know your AIM/ICQ or location.
MeFi Anniversaries
I just noticed this! As of a few days ago, I've officially been in MetaFilter for two whole years! Well, except for a couple self-exiles where I left for weeks at a time due to offline crap or my just being a type B personality. How many other regulars are there who have been around at least as long? Speak up! When's your 2 year anniversary? Maybe we can throw a party for ya!
I don't want to post as my spouse
Hi! I'm MiguelCardoso's wife. My name is Maria João. I use the same computer as my husband does and have just registered under the name Schweppes Girl; using a well-known roundabout way. My username shows up fine on MetaFilter but, when I came to MetaTalk to comment, I find my username is automatically - and annoyingly - changed to MiguelCardoso.
Although I agree with what he says most of the time, I'd like, as do Catch/Holloway and the Acheson couple, to make comments of my own. Why is this? Or should I just order Miguel( ;) to take dictation?
I should add that I don't really mind; but I read MetaFilter and MetaTalk regularly and feel that women are severely under-represented. Does this mean I can be myself on MetaFilter(Schweppes Girl shows up as my login)but must bow to my husband on the perhaps more important MetaTalk? I guess it's just a bug. Am I right? Could it be fixed?

MeFi Demographics: Let's have a census!
"The best mirror is an old friend." -Peter Nivio Zarlenga.
With all the questions about who make up us, is it time that we organized some sort of demographic survey of Whom Constitute Mefi?

The return of a member and what happens next
at the emailed advice of a fellow mefier, i need to say something to all of you. no, this isn't a stunt for attention, or yet another thread to stir it with a stick...he tells me that my entry back into mefi has been rude, and he questioned why i did it the way I did. when I told him, he said i should tell the rest of you . more inside...
how many people actively participate in MetaTalk?
All this recent navel gazing has me wondering--is there any way to see how many people actively participate in MetaTalk? An informal count of the front page posts just now puts it at about a 1/3 who may not even know there's all this discourse going on behind the scenes (based purely on if they have posted any comments or links, they may be lurking). No ponies needed, mathowie! Just curious if any of the MeFi Coder Brigade has come up with anything to generate that sort of info. Thanks!
What's the gender breakdown on MeFi?
The large penis thread got me thinking -- along with going bowling with nine guys during MeFiSea -- what's the gender breakdown on MeFi, for those that have a stated gender?
This is the greatest meta ever
Case study: A post which declares something "the greatest ever," regardless of the intentions of the poster, is bound to wind up with a discussion not of the linked piece, but of the poster, his motivations, beliefs, and interests. In this way it can be understood as a MetaSelfPost, a post whose essential link is the poster's MeFi profile.
Auto-Logout
Would it be possible to add an auto-logout option? I browse MeFi from school, and I often forget to logout when I'm finished. Perhaps an option on the Customization page to make your cookie invalid after 6 hours?

Sharing accounts
Now that it's becoming a trend (#1, #2, #3), does anyone else think publicly sharing accounts to circumvent site registration is a bad idea?
There are some young teenagers here.
Twice in the last couple days, posters have identified themselves as much younger than I expected to find here. One said he/she was 13, another was in the "10 to 14 group." I'm not surprised, exactly, but maybe a little uncomfortable. I don't want to underrate a 14-year-old's ability to handle "adult" discourse, but I'm wondering whether there is the potential for some problems (speaking very generally) here.
