Attention first-time posters

Attention first-time posters: hpsell recently made a hideous front-page post that violated just about every possible rule. Inevitably, he was greeted with a barrage of negative responses: [bad bad bad], "I'm not going to make fun of you because I strongly suspect that you're retarded," and the like. Did he whine, counterattack, or curl up into a ball and hide? No, he said "i didnt mean to ruffle any feathers... ill try to do better with the grammar." [more inside]

Broken RSS on MeFi

The MetaFilter front page RSS feed seems to have become deformed. It has something to do with "Soup & Old Clothes?"

No one complains about newsfilter when people die

About today's earthquake/tidal wave post : today I read the New York Times site before Metafilter, but I dismissed the possibility of posting about it because of the recent snarking against linking to current news articles in front page posts.

Then I clicked on my Mefi tab to discover somebody had posted about it, and nobody's posted any "NewsFilter" gripes yet. Is it that the 0ldB33 Snarkers Committee really means "...to news articles we don't like (and you have to read our minds)", or is there a policy of ranking the human costs of natural disasters somewhere above doggie dildos after all?

As for that thread's content, I was little dismayed about the comments where people's big concern was for one dried-up (and never very good) Sci-Fi author (the movie "2001" was Kubrick's doing, y'all), but I withheld my remarks about that failure of etiquette and (as I see it) morals from the Blue -- as, as of this typing, so has everybody else.

But then of course I'm still a "n00b".... Are concerns like those I've expressed here today okay, or should I first submit my MetaTalk thread ideas to some MetaCognoscenti as well?

post policing is the new troll

A thread about some irresponsible thing Bill O'Reilly said is followed with some pile on comments and a few insights. Then, ten comments and forty minutes later, this: "Jeebus, how does this qualify as a FPP?" It seems that on the new MetaFilter, post policing is the new troll.

You don't change a quote, duh

When you quote a comment from another user, you don't change the words that the other user wrote (unless you use clear edit marks like brackets and elipses to show you made a change). You would think this is mind-numbingly clear, and yet...

Annual repetition. This thread has begun a discussion on the MeFi acceptability of pages which change on an annual basis. Are annual repostings of this nature acceptable? [MI]

Another 30 seconds with bunnies

Matt, it would be great if you could whip up a little script that would automatically post to the front page every time a new "in 30 seconds with bunnies" movie is posted. It would save us users a lot of time and effort.

The effects of noobs on MetaFilter.

Not in defense of noobs. Because of noobs (myself included), the sky is falling and trends clearly show that metafilter is getting rapidly out of control!! Seriously though, this analysis shows that the "average age" of a metafilter poster has dropped by almost 200 days, I am in whichever camp wants to extend the incubation period for noobs like us...

Get it right the first time

Just because there's no good way to get a thread shilling a new piece of free software noticed once it drops off the top of the front page is no reason to make a further thread noting the addition of a uninventive feature that was missed in the original post.

Nor does that fact that KevinSkomsvold saved it by turning it into a discussion about the merits of RSS mitigate my point. IE: What is the best way to do it?

Crafting Good Posts Part XXMCIV: labelling

Crafting Good Posts Part XXMCIV: labelling. Things to note when making a post: [QuickTime] = "this link has quicktime movie content," [NSFW] = "you may want to view this discretely," [NYT] = "this link requires a New York Times registration..."

What else do you wanna know up front? Let's go over it for our neoFites.

the consensus is: MetaFilter is not a soapbox

I am new. There is a lot of MetaTalk about politics.

Apparently, "The quickest way to get a label you'll never be able to shake here is to engage in political threads."

For a long time, I couldn't figure out why people freaked out so much about mentions of politics, but I've been reading this thread, and I'm almost three-quarters through, finally, and it looks like the consensus is: MetaFilter is not a soapbox, and your primary subject should be links, not opinions.

That's cool with me, I'm just curious if I've got it properly nailed down.

what IS the "best of the web?"

An honest question: how would you define "The best of the web" in late 2004 looking forward to 2005? Obviously we live in a political world, but MetaFilter is a longer train of thought, I think. How can we balance current events with interesting and wonderful stuff? It's largely up to the noobs, I think. Matt has taken a huge leap of faith here and he is God but there must be a way to convert our indigenous zealots too. My fingers are crossed for the next few weeks.

Stop being jerks, especially outside of politics threads

Consistency in standards, and the lack thereof. Since the election, MeFi has gotten a lot calmer, and a lot more readable. Much of these is surely do to the deletion of highly partisan comments and threads, but it seems like some people aren't getting the message. Snarky FPPs like this provoke obnoxious replies like part 3 of this.

Is there a viable way to confine this crap to the political threads?

Links to products: Cool? Shill? Both?

How does the community feel about links to products for sale, especially during the X-mas holiday shopping season? There seem to have been a few links which were pointing our products in their own right, without any broader point or purpose. Cool? Shill? Both?

Censored!!

OK Matt : I took your deletion of my previous two posts on this subject, the 2004 election controversy ( and probably several by other folks ) as an indication that either 1) you oppose posts on the election controversy or 2) you want quality posts. Since I don't like to think of you as a site manager inclined towards censorship, I took the deletion of those posts as an indication that they weren't of sufficient quality. So, I addressed #2 : I thought that was a high quality post - well substantiated, and which presented an angle not yet discussed or noted elsewhere on the net. If you are opposed to discussion of the 2004 election, why not state that in your posting guidelines ? I feel that would be more helpful. Otherwise, new users may be confused for those unspecified posting categories which you are inclined to delete.

Let's not be SA

So from molatar to the animal dildos to a couple other sites that have been getting posted, mefi is getting something of a PoE flavor. I realize that's only a couple examples, I've just sort of had a growing impression of this sort of thing over the past couple weeks.

I don't really have an opinion on this, but it seems like the sort of thing people might want to discuss. Is "posting links to funny people so you can laugh at them" a thing Metafilter wants to be doing? If so, might I suggest stealing PoE's prime directive: "never, ever contact the people so linked."

Let's... not be SA. In any way.

MeFi interferring with real life?

How many of you (if any) have had issues with MeFi interferring with real life? I use a pseudonym because way back in the dark ages of BBS's, I regularly indulged in flamewars and I ended up getting prankcalls at all hours and such. Now, I try not to get sucked into flamewars, but I have a feeling I'm still kind of a dick online, so I hang on to a pseudonym. How about you?

How not to respond in a thread.

How not to respond in a thread. I don't like callouts, and I'm not calling anyone out. I was inspired by the good discussions in the green and I believe this thread highlights how Metafilter can be improved. In it so far, we have a throwaway irrelevant "I'm an atheist, this does not apply to me" comment, we have a non sequitur comment, an "I agree" without any backup, and a purely reaction provoking comment of whether God has a penis and can take dumps (I do understand the point being made). Basically, we can do better. I'm far from perfect and probably have a lot of throwaway comments to my name -- but could we all try a little harder to think before we comment?

Another 4 years of BushFilter

It seems at the moment, that the US President will not change and will last another four years. I'm going to admit that I considered it a small bonus that if there was a victory for the contender, there was a glimmer of hope that the culture of MeFi might have shifted away from politics. Do you think that would have happened? We have another four years ahead of us...is it time to finally bury the dead horse and just admit, yes, the Blue is (and perhaps has always been) a community political weblog now? There's always AskMeFi I say.

Bad Bush thread.

Bush is Hitler. Well, I'm glad that's settled.

The post includes scintillating links to the front page of foxnews.com and to a NY Times editorial. The comments include "you never should have been born", "prayer breakfasts take us closer to forced reeducation camps for gays", (this comment met with lots of approval) "you're an idiot" and "Bush is Hitler"(the phrase "a normal Christian guy on a power trip" is a reference to an earlier comment by skallas that Hitler was just a normal Christian guy on a power trip). There’s nothing redeeming here. Will you delete this please, Matt?

Newsfilter callout

The Final Nail. I haven't been reading as much lately---I'm am hoping that the election will be over soon so the excuses are gone for shitty posts. But, there it is.

A double post. It is a Newsfilter post, that isn't even news since it has been talked about for over a decade. It is clearly does not meet the stated standard. It is a classic troll: toss a turd that you *know* will incite much argument, for no apparent reason.. It is a single-link to a newspaper. It is a blatant amount of negative campaigning even while we try to encourage voting with a new link at the top of the page.

For the love of god, it is a self-Godwinizing post!

Matt posted the very next post, 30 minutes later, so there is no chance he didn't see the post.

Yet... it remains there on the blue.

It is the piece de resitance of the the shithole Matt has willingly allowed MeFi to become. I would say amazing if it wasn't so sad....

A repost this may be, but it's highly worthy and should stay on the front page, because the chap has made more 'critters' since I last saw the site, and I very much appreciate being reminded of it, and for flip's sake, it was last posted in 2002.

Sheesh. Forgetting the fact that this is a crap FPP, do we have to have this stupid argument again? I get really tired of reading the uninformed, bigoted opinions of anti-religion types with chips on their shoulders. You are free to not believe in God; I am not bothered by your not-believing. But you not-believing is not evidence of intellectual or moral superiority. It's just a choice you made, a choice I can understand and respect. How about some reciprocation already?
