Most Answers or Comments?
I am curious about which posts on the blue have gotten the most comments (not counting things such as U.S. politics megathreads), or which questions on Ask have gotten the most answers. How feasible is that to find out? It would be cool if those were set off, as another way to see what has had a lot of engagement.
[RSS PSA] Reminder to update your MetaFilter RSS feeds
Last month, an apparent error in Feedburner caused several of MeFi's legacy RSS feeds to not update for up to a week (at least in my popular feed reader, Feedly). The problem has been fixed -- for now. But it's an important reminder that the Feedburner platform is increasingly unreliable -- if it were ever shut down by Google, the thousands of readers who rely on those feeds to keep up with the site may lose contact without even realizing it. The good news is that the site has a new set of self-hosted feeds that should remain active no matter what Google does. So, if you read the site using an RSS reader, please take a moment to update your reader to the new feeds -- and check the related posts on MetaFilter and Ask MetaFilter for a list of posts you might have missed during the outage.

Did I mis-remember or does this Mefi post exist? [holiday gift list]
I remember at least two MeFI posts about an annual gift/list and/or catalogue that was full of ridiculously expensive and very niche holiday gifts and the author of the link to the article(s) was just delightfully sassy and salty about the entire list and the associated prices. [more inside]
MeFi Business/Legal Update Follow-Up
Hi folks -- here's a thread to talk about constructive next steps after this thread from two weeks ago. [more inside]
Fundraising Idea: AskMe Update Bounties
An idea for fundraising... What are the AskMe posts you most wanted to see updates on that did not get them? What would you be willing to donate to MetaFilter to get that update? Would you donate $5 to see if they ate the thing? $5 to find out if they went with a product rec from the Ask and whether it worked? $10 to see if they quit that job? $20 to see if they DTMF? Let's bribe our way into some answers. [more inside]
What have you done this decade that you're proud of?
I was reading through old favorites tonight and found this post and it's mooshy-happy.
I still haven't hit the daily limit for favorites. Is there one?

After the Fire – Metafilter Should Consider Replacing Itself
Once Metafilter has stabilized its finances enough to keep the lights on for at least months, instead of weeks, it will be time to give more thought to the longer term. That longer term should include a “spin-off” to increase the user base. [more inside]
MeFi Community Mission Statement
There's been some good discussion lately about being a decent human being on the site and a spate of good posts, and it's got me thinking about whether we could (or should) come up with a kind of mission statement as a community. [more inside]
OLED Nintendo Switch Metafilter Post or did I dream it?

What's in your profile?
MeFites are one of the most consistently interesting groups in which I am allowed to hang out. Some MeFites write or have written books. Hook us up, wouldja? And, in general, I like to check out profiles and am always happy to find links to blogs, updated or not, music, articles, stories, whatever stuff ends up there. Please consider populating your profile.
p.s. There's no fact-checking. [more inside]

MeFi Posts: $20 SAIT
We're all pitching in for Fundraising Month. Here is my contribution: ever wanted to see a post on a topic, but didn't want to write it yourself for whatever reason? Let me do it for you. Pledge a donation of $20 to MetaFilter and I'll make a MeFi post on a topic of your choosing. [more inside]
Covid Shopping Mall
During the Winter Solstice holiday season, there's a shopping mall. There are MeFites and MeFi-affiliateds who make masks. Perhaps we could support them? There are mask questions on Ask.Me, so there's a market. [more inside]
What happened to the MeFi Deleted sites?
Seems they haven’t been updated in a year or so. Searched the archives but couldn’t find any announcement.
A post about the passage of time?
I'm trying to find a post that I am 99% certain was made on the blue within the last 5 years. It linked to an interactive site that was trying to communicate how as we get older we perceive time passing faster because we have more context / memories compared with when we were younger. [more inside]

(## new) on sidebar threads (feature request)?

Metatalktail Hour: MeFi Made Me Do It
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! After reading 8 billion AskMe recs over several years I finally gave in and bought a Tom Bihn bag that arrived this morning, so this week what I want to know is: What has MetaFilter convinced you to do? Dared you to try? Forced you to attempt? SHARE.
Stoner podcast: our fearless founder
Uh, I stumbled across this podcast on Stoner: Creative people talk about their experiences with marijuana (and whatever else comes up.) today, titled, Episode 19: Matt Haughey, founder of Metafilter, editorial at Slack.
IRL post achiving pre-event
This IRL post concerns an event with a long lead time. It's been closed/archived long before the event. Should we rethink archiving posts long before the event?

Alexa, play Mefi* music
While bemoaning the fact that there's not an Amazon playlist or station that scratches my itch for eclectic music, it dawned on me that Mefi Music hits that particular sweet spot for me. Which led me to wonder about the feasibility of integrating Alexa with Mefi music. It seems it's been done for iPhone using the RSS feed, so I'm assuming doing something for Alexa is not totally out of the question. I'm curious as to what people think of the idea in general, and also any thoughts on technical implementation. [more inside]

Moderators' Day 2016 GET HYPE
Back in 2007 your humble narrator suggested, near the end of a rather challenging day at the comment factory, that we remember and honor June 13th as Moderators' Day henceforth-ish. Please join me in thanking all of our mods - past and present - for the hard and often thankless job they do every day to make MetaFilter one of the best places on the Internet. Thank you cortex, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, Eyebrows McGee, and vacapinta. Welcome and thank you to our new coder frimble, and special thanks to our moderators emeriti, jessamyn, mathowie, and pb. [more inside]

I saw that five MeFi threads had been deleted in the past day for various reasons. I'm not here to question any of them; my curiosity is rather more vanilla: Does anyone know the record for most thread deletions in a 24-hour period?

How do *you* pronounce 'MeFi'?
Hi MeFites. After many years of overthinking a plate of beans, I made a thing! I'm pleased to share my PhD dissertation about MetaFilter with you all. A simple question of how we pronounce our own nickname has unfolded into many years of research. This time spent would not have been as enriching or meaningful to me and to the field of sociolinguistics without the support and enthusiasm of my fellow MeFites. I say I made a thing, but really, you made this. Thank you. [more inside]

General call to scriptmakers!
The new MeFi redesign seems fairly stable (like, pb's not going to do a massive rollback tomorrow or anything), and I'm sure there are a lot of people using various scripts which don't work any more. I've thought about asking individual script writers about updates, but I don't know which scripts have been abandoned, which are active, etc., plus I know that other people are using all kinds other scripts, so here's a general call to script users: If you're using a script and it no longer works, post it here! And a general call to script writers: If you think "Aw, I'm sure nobody cares about my ole script anymore", give the thread a look! If you see people posting that your script isn't working with the redesign, that means your script is still loved! Consider giving it an update, if you have the time!
How would you clone Metafilter? (kinda)
If you were naive, hubristic optimistic enough to want to set up a metafilter like site, but with a specific focus, how would you go about doing that?
I don't mean Mefi as a whole with the wonderful subsites, just the Metafilter.com part?
If there off the shelf free (or cheap) software that could do the job, whilst also be scalable or is it a question of "Stable, Secure, Cheap pick two" ? [more inside]

"Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"
Mefite Paul-Olivier Dehaye’s three-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) at Coursera, "Teaching Goes Massive: New Skills Required" 'reportedly launched on June 23 without controversy. The course targeted people in higher education who felt “threatened,” “lost” or “unprepared technology-wise,” -- a MOOC for MOOC skeptics, in other words.' And then the mindfuck began. Inside Higher Ed notes that in trying to figure out what is going on, someone uncovered a handful of comments he made on MeFi related to the project.

Deck ads on The Blue
In the ongoing effort to decrease our reliance on Google's Adsense and stabilize ad income, we'll be soon showing ads for The Deck (same as we currently do on the front pages of all the sites) on MetaFilter discussion thread pages, for both logged in, and logged out users on desktops (mobile will continue to show Adsense ads). It will look something like this screenshot. [more inside]
