Communism thread NOT a total train wreck; news at 11

Could have been a total train wreck. Wasn't. But in an almost http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/32975#667562">bizarro twist, the thread brought out all kinds of insights into the problems of not only communism but general ideologies systems of political power. We did good.

Is there any way we can help to ensure MeFi uptime?

Is there any way we unfortunate non-Californians can help to ensure that MetaFilter becomes a 24-hour operation once more? [More inside.]

Mycroft searches for MeFi and MeTa

I will withhold the obscenities your mental capacity and nature evokes, and simply say: how stupid, how depraved you are.
I've seen fairly impressive spin, but this is a work of art. It takes a special strain of immorality to lie that well.

New User Waiting Period Policy

I had a pretty interesting link for a fpp but I found out the hard way that I have to wait a week (5 days? 7 days?) before i get to to post on the big blue. Isn't is safe to assume that the new members aren't just people that wandered in to mefi and joined, but rather lurkers who've been dying to post for quite a while?

Also, I was able to post a question in askme as well as this thread, so I'm thinkin maybe we need some policy revision

Newsfilter as FPPs

Predictions: I just noticed the news, "White House to Let Rice Testify in Public" on AP. How long until this becomes an FPP. Doesn't it seem lately that every piece of news is getting posted? Where does one draw the line between news that should be an FPP and news that shouldn't

MeFi and MeTa: booze-fueled commentary?

More than any other community weblog, MetaFilter and MetaTalk are associated with drunkenness and even alcoholism. This is an honest question: do most members here drink more than others/they ought to/than what's good for them? Is it OK to post while drunk, unless you really foul up? Is it considered funny or something? Why are there (comparatively) few other drugs extolled here? In sum, is MeFi quickly becoming MeFried?

When a FPP doesn't start with a link I get confused. It looks like a continuation of the previous FPP, sometimes. And I can't tell what the featured post should be. Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed this with greater frequency lately.

The Left shall rise again?

This is probably pointless, so here goes nothing:

"Instead of South vs North, this time it will be Right vs Left.

Sounds good to me. I doubt the world will shed too many tears if these narrow-minded, short-sighted, self-serving fools start getting special deliveries in their mailboxes. What's that? You mean you didn't order the bouquet of plastique and nails?"

This is repugnant. I agree with Civil_Disobedient's politics more often than not, but this is beyond the pale.

Pleas explain timeout durations

Banned from MeFi? Are there any hard and fast rules? Why does lazy-ville get banned for weeks, others only a week, and others forever? If I ever happen to step on someone's toes while on a bender or something, I just want to know what the results might be. Also, is there any page for information regarding who's been banned in the past?

FPP not for settling old grudges

So when did the Metafilter front page become a place to settle old grudges? Really, this is just a bit childish. Your links should speak for themselves; editorializing and playground callouts help neither you nor anyone else.

It used to be frowned upon to post links from other link agregators/filters. Has it changed?

When I used to read MeFi regularly, it was generally accepted that you didn't post anything from "the usual suspects" such as memepool, boing boing, b3ta, etc. because they themselves are weblogs about interesting, offbeat links and most readers read them as well as MeFi. Seeing as this "LSD art" story has been the top item on memepool for a week, I guess this policy has changed. (This is really not meant to sound rude or snide, apologies if it's taken that way)

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi?

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi? Is it because it's new, or is it something else? Don't get me wrong, I like a measure of snark & biting wit. Is it really necessary to comment on things you don't like?

Michael Jackson belongs in jail

I have mixed feelings about hoopyfrood's Michael Jackson belongs in jail post. On the one hand, I agree with the general "don't editorialize" philosophy and its corollary "save it for a comment in the thread." On the other, this isn't exactly the New York Times and a poster's take on their subject is arguably an integral part of the post. "Letting the link speak for itself", when it involves a news item, is all very well - but perhaps keeping one's opinion out of the front page text is also an exercise in obfuscation and even dishonesty. Has current policy on editorializing changed? ( I speak as a frequent editorializer, I should add. Even though I agree "pedophile of pop", with its dubious inverted commas, and all-capitals IN JAIL!, as well as the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty except Michael Jackson, are way too extreme a way of going about it.)

diversity of opinion here on PinkoFilter

"Why can't homosexuals take responsibility for their role in the propagation of HIV infections? It was their culture and practices that facilitated HIV infection and tipped the balance to epidemic. Even before this male homosexuals known for their association with transmission of disease".

"Queens are pathetic in old age as their protestations about the faults of others fail to hide their wrinkles"

Jesus you people* are hateful, and smug too.

Advice on re-posting MeFi to blog?

Advice on re-posting MeFi to blog?

I often repost mefi stuff on my blog, often meaning Several times a week, sometimes multiple times a Day. I have an html template I use but I do keep changing the format a little. I'd be glad for some advice on how to do it right, or acceptably. You can check what I mean at http://radio.weblogs.com/0123486/ or for short http://rootcellar.info

I'll try to be checking back here, but there is the email link on the page.

OldNewsFilter

WaybackmachineFilter.

This story is NewsFilter, but not new NewsFilter (which is not so much a problem for me as it is for others) it's OLD news which by definition is not news. Not only that, but the new news of this old story (which was covered in many a place) is that the patent was considered invalid:

"A panel set up to look at the Patent Office has concluded that the current system is not working very well. Given that the USPTO managed to conclude in a breathtakingly fast 12 months that a patent for how to swing on a rope swing was invalid [no, I'm not making this up...], I don't see what the big problem is. Meanwhile, Amazon announced their intention to seek a patent on the printed word, and possibly on stone carvings." from Linuxworld.

Although the poster admits it's old news, this raises the question of why post it at all. It's been widely covered.
