Give it up.

I am so goddamn tired of being rickrolled in the comments. I think somebody spilled some 4chan on my metafilter.

Submissive

You know, as the guy who has trouble pointing out that you just cut in line in front of him, I gotta say wtf davy? Is it that hard to imagine that there are people who actually are insufficiently assertive—problematically so—and that this may cause trouble with partners who don't feel they're 'manly' enough? The world doesn't view everyone the same way so it's a bit too much to ask that everyone refuse to project anything besides hesitant soppiness.

Ask the Moral Compass

A recent AskMeFi question: Should I have this affair?. Some responses: Is there any personal honor left in this world? Have you no sense of decency? Your tone is one of weakness before you fuck up his life with your own selfish interests Question 1: Why are some people in this community judgemental? Question 2: Do people practice what they preach? Has anyone ever given advice that does not reflect the way that they themselves live their life?

OMG CHEATING!

Just post the links, please.

A personal request: If you think the formatting or content of your post needs defending (newsfilter and single-link youtube posts seem to be the prime offenders here), make your justifications in the first reply to the thread instead of pointing it out in the FPP itself.

If you ever want to email more than one MeFi user...

The recent Wendell kurfuffle brought to mind a very simple rule of email that is quite easy to remember and it is amazing (and annoying) that so few people actually use it. So I share it here in the hopes that anyone emailing more than one MeFi user will use this technique, in the future:
If you ever want to email more than one MeFi user*: send the email to yourself and put the list of people you are sending to in the Bcc field. Any moron recipient who hits "Reply to All" will send their reply to an audience of ONE (the original sender) and (additionally) no recipient can see the other recipients' email addresses.
This is simple, basic stuff. *Obviously this applies to any email you send to more than one recipient, not just MeFi users.

Anything goes on MetaTalk?

I was a bit confused by Jessamyn's post. Are insults really kosher in MetaTalk?

Something's rotten with bitrot.

b1tr0t needs a time-out. Telling someone who was seeking psychological counseling but didn't want to tell their parents to use adultfriendfinder.com instead was ... well, I'd like to think the green has just slightly higher standards.

Is this really necessary?

I'm confused on the etiquette rules regarding when it's okay to push a thread off into lunacy. I was hoping that the pirates thread could be interesting (although the OP was a bit lacking), but it instantly turned into a useless flamefest. Is it too late to delete all the pirate songs and idiocy? Can we maybe agree on a brief moratorium to let threads develop before we turn them into Thomas Pynchon novels?

At least nobody has posted about gun control yet

Remember to stick to the subject and issues raised by the post, not people that commented on it

This US politics thread gets pretty painful to read. My complaint isn't that original, but please, please, resist the urge to make it about other members of this site.

Too much hate, too much judgment

Why are people being so judgmental in this AskMe question? Just because there is a celebrity connection? Other people like myself who have legitimate stories to share are being turned off by the sheer abrasiveness and lack of empathy displayed inside.

Metafilter Self-Exam

As I stopped in here trying to catch up on threads, it was hard not to notice that LandedGentry's original post about Kurt Vonnegut's death had about 600 entries. (Will the more anal among us please count the periods?) davidmsc threw in his dime early on, and it was both counter to the general opinion and given in a very flippant manner. That SINGLE comment generated nearly three hundred other comments on the brown. Now I ask you all. Does this make any sense for the long term best interests of metafilter?

Hi, I'm From MetaFilter, And I'm Here To Help

I find myself fascinated by unhindered's "contributions". Which is to say that I find them annoying as hell, pseudoscientific at best, and skirting the boundaries of acceptable behavior on MeFi.

How to directly answer a question based on flawed assumptions?

"I think it's pretty clear that I'm not asking for your opinion on the idea's viability." Sorry, this question (and response from the asker) is crap.

Not our Lane

This is not something we should do. Regardless of our belief system, asking the group how to break the law is not the intended purpose of AskMe.

Frist Pots!

Heywood Mogroot's "first-fpp" tag finally gets used in another maiden post. Is tagging your first FPP as such a good idea? Should NeoFites be recommended to do so? Should we all go back and backtag our front page deflowerings?

Good ask metafilter thread that doesn't answer the question? Yes, they exist.

This (Medical Marijuana ask.mefi thread) is a good example of an ask metafilter thread where people don't answer the specific question of the poster, but still remain civil and helpful. Yay. So there's an existence proof that people can be helpful while not answering the question asked (and not fall all over themselves to be jerks).

Taking a dim view of a certain user

Why does MetaFilter revolve around Dios? Isn't this a community of circa 50,000? It feels like everyday there is another Dios soap opera. I dread clicking on post comments anymore because chances are it will be more about him rather than the post.

AskMe Proxies?

Did anyone else get an email yesterday from "a new member" saying you had a "friendly profile" and asking you to post a question for him since he'd "just joined" and couldn't yet post an askme? Monochromaticgirl and I both did and thought it was odd--especially since we don't have very friendly profiles.

Maybe we're just jerks, but we thought it was odd.

Commercial Link in FPP?

I'm putting together a FPP about a certain inimitable cartoonist. I've found a place that has a lot of said cartoonist's strips available to view online. Great! But I'm concerned about linking to it because it's a commercial site. Pros: It's the most extensive collection of this artist's work online as far as I can tell. Cons: They're selling something. I'd like to include the page in my FPP but I'm not sure if it would be appropriate.
