Proclaiming that a thread is doomed is poor form.

meta-opinions about the future of a thread are pointless, and are usually an attempt to lead the thread to premature death. Don't try to pre-judge the outcome of any particular conversation. Either the thread will or will not self-destruct, and may take a direction different from the one envisaged by any of its contributors. Godwin's law has many variants; is there a need for a metafiltrian distillation of it? Has it already been done?

having a "point" is a step towards chaos

Actually, posts with "points" are often the ones in most danger of inciting flamefests and being less than appropriate.

Should this post be yanked before or after penis-enlargement-pills?

So this thread isn't exactly an advertisement, but it does link to a site whose actual purpose seems to be to sell some sort of penis-enlargement-pill.

I'm not saying that the post should get yanked, but I am wondering whether content whose purpose is to advertise a product should really be the subject of a front page post.

Enthusiam is great, but this is just one lame post.

If you're going to pee all over a thread, considering taking it to MeTa first. Okay, I'll bite. As VulcanMike points out, this really isn't WhiteStripesFilter. Enthusiam is great, but this is just one lame post.

RetroFilter. double?

RetroFilter! Since "Eric Conveys an Emotion" was first posted over three years ago, both the contents of the link and the Metafilter community that discussed it have changed. Now that Metafilter has surpassed 25,000 threads, perhaps we could use a forum dedicated to the dredging up of old-school links from Metafilter's past? Alternatively, should we encourage "selective doubleposting" to Metafilter itself?

Trying to find an old MeFi thread on benevolent lender

I've been trying unsuccessfully to find an old MeFi thread about a guy who provides financial assistance to needy requestors facing large, one-time unexpected expenses. I'm sorry to ask in a forum such as this, but I was hoping for help finding the thread...

MF hanging Safari

Has anyone noticed a problem with MF and Safari >=0.67? These are the builds with tabs; 0.73, the first public release, went into open beta today. I often find that the MF home page will hang Safari until it's done (spinning cursor, can't scroll, can't leave the page early, no interaction at all.) This doesn't seem to happen with the lofi page (or anywhere else).

Have we returned to a civil MetaFilter?

Reasonable and reasoned talk about the war? a global warming thread where people correct themselves and say "climate change"? Is Mefi returning to civility? Which is to say, normality???

Googlewashing recursively

MetaFilter: Such a powerful force, it has "Googlewashed" the term "Googlewash".

debka verboten

i seem to recall mathowie expressly forbidding postroad from ever posting a debka link again. since postroad continually flouts even basic metafilter guidelines and seems to regard this forum as his personal colostomy bag, i think he needs a time out.

Metafilter is like totally Iraqfilter and stuff

Hey, have you noticed that Metafilter is like totally Iraqfilter and stuff? Of course you haven't. But this guy has. Over and over and over and over and over and over again! Maybe it's time to put Metafilter=Iraqfilter on the sideglob, so as to save people the time of typing it in every post?

The very worst kind of IraqFilter thread

This is an example of the very worst kind of IraqFilter thread. Grabbing the first news story on a subject, a Fark-style minimal headline and people getting out the popcorn for a surely ensuing flamewar.

Can we please not have anymore crap like this on MeFi? There are many other places to get information like this.

Link changed; cool/not cool?

Deleting a thread is one thing, but is it right to change a link on an (obviously high-profile and emotional subject) FPP in someone else's name, even if you mention that in the thread? Personally, if it were my post: delete it, but don't change the link under my name.

"the war has started !"

so its almost time for thousands of "the war has started !" posts. No doubt hundreds of us have carefully collected links to such unique gems as CNN, patiently waiting for the bombs to fall before hitting post. Comments regarding horrific pictures and heroic stories have been typed and proofread. Opinions formed, pre-conceived notions strong...we are ready.

Best blogs poll over at Forbes.

Perfidious sideblog-collapsers, please take note: Forbes Magazine is holding a Best Luxury Media Blogs Under $5 Poll and MetaFilter is currently ahead, despite ferocious competition from the despicable opposition, i.e. the honourable Romenesko and bleedin' Gawker, no less. Can we win? Should we? Do we want to? [Do please check sideblog for the official communiqué.]

MeFi Detectives go Pro

I have an idea for a new addition to the MeFi family of products... MoJo!

MetaonlineJournalism - A subsection of MetaFilter (like MetaTalk) where stories or rumors that need further investigation, research, or verification are actively worked on by webloggers, ideally working together to determine the truth of the matter.

This, I think, is increasingly important, since MeFi posts fade out a lot quicker than they used to, due to posting frequency. MetaOnlineJournalism posts might be around long enough to determine the truth of the matter, and would be presented in an environment that would ideally be far more about collaborative reporting, and far less about flaming.

I want my MoJo!

Looking for a winamp plugin that gives recommendations

Sorry no link. In a discussion a couple of months ago there was mention of a winamp plugin that would recommend music based on the tracks that you were listening to. I can't find the thread that mentioned this or anything on google. Does anyone remember this? Can anyone post a link?

textbook example of a bad op-ed piece

Isn't this FPP a textbook example of a bad op-ed piece -- a link guaranteed to generate a lot of heat but shed no light? The liberals will cheer, the conservatives will discount it as liberal propaganda, nobody will convince anyone of anything, and lots of people will call each other names.

Racist, inflammatory, trolling newsfilter post

This thread, despite generating a huge response, is

A.) Newsfilter
B.) Racist, inflammatory, and designed as nothing more than a troll. I realize that MaddD enjoys posts that cause controversy, as evidenced by his topic post history, but suggesting that grieving parents should be shackled to a floor because of their immigration status seems a little much.

Bomb the fuck away.

Is this acceptable? I tried to levy what I thought was a reasonable, if salty, criticism against this member for a previous comment, and I get called some colourful names. I thought the majority of the comments in the thread were a civil and rational blend of discussion, agreement and disagreement, so it made me a bit sad, though not really surprised, to see such a response, and to see it supported by another member.

Congratulations on being civil.

Congratulations to all who participated in the recent thread on evangelical Christians and why people dislike them. The level of constructive dialogue on all sides of the issue was truly miraculous ...hehe. Why did this thread succeed when so many other religious threads quickly degrade into vicious flamewars?

yuckkkkkkkkkkkkk

23324 - The Grand Cabaret : apparently deleted because "It's just you. Really." Are we saying that it was deleted because everyone disagreed with the poster (they didn't) or because it was likely to offend people (which many other threads risk).

Personally, my brain can't cope when The Sun can run a sensible article about bigger women while MetaFilter responds with "yuckkkkkkkkkkkkk".

Interesting gimmick, but not sustainable

I understand the point of the Enduring Freedom casualty count thread and admittedly admire its style. But I'm not sure trivia questions are appropriate as Metafilter posts, if only because it necessitates moderating one's own thread, which we are generally discouraged from doing here.

What if you get someone else to post your otherwise-self-link?

Aladfar makes an interesting point:

And here's the thing about self links: This was an interesting project that, were it linked by someone other than the author, would be absolutely fine on MeFi. Would it be better to ask someone else to link for you in an effort to circumvent the "rules"?

How do we feel about logrolling?

ethically questionable mapping link; i am sorry

I recently posted a link, and in it I happened to slip a 1x1 px graphic that is used by this site to create a map of internet users. Seemed harmless enough, but in retrospect I regret having done it. It was an action of questionable ethics, and I should have avoided it. Please nix my post and accept my apologies.

Print-friendly links when possible

blah blah woof woof--this is my nit to pick:

What is so hard about the concept of user friendly easier to read links? Printer friendly, where available, should be the default.
I assumed this was a given but perhaps if it were added to the explicit posting canon? It's a no brainer, folks.

50% of comments on MetaFilter are by people who first joined in 2002. In my Mefi wanderings, I got the feeling that there were not many low-digit users posting on MetaFilter anymore. Everyone seemed to be a 14xxx! I decided to seek the truth..

DAYS without metafilter; you guys?

This is the first time since the New Year that metafilter.com has actually resolved for me. At first I thought it was something to do with where I'm connecting, but neither the site that hosts my email (energis2) or demon or my ISP could resolve it either. When I finally get here I find tonnes of postings - so what happened? Did anyone else experience it?
