Where do deleted comments go?
Mommy, where do deleted comments go after they're deleted?

Why does mousing over a user's comment show username instead of user number?
In Metatalk and Ask Metafilter, when previewing a comment, mousing over a username produces their /username.mefi/username, instead of their user number. Why? [more inside]

Can we move the byline to the top?
Suggestion for a small format change: how about putting the byline on top of the comment in discussion threads? This would allow us to efficiently skip comments from users we don't want to hear from without resorting to user killfiles, and without wasting precious seconds of I'm-surfing-at-work-and-I-really-shouldn't-be-doing-this time to realize that this is a comment from that guy. Having the byline at the top would save a bit of scrolling and skimming, since you'd know what you're getting into right from the start. Also, some MeFites are "must-reads" for me and I'd like to make sure I don't blow past them.

Flagging on "Recent Comments"
Any chance we could get the "flag post" link on the my recent comments page? If it's easy that is, not really a big deal. I just spend a lot of time reading comments on there these days instead of the actual threads.
How should we format MeDumps?
Database mavens: what would be the best format for weekly database dumps of MeFi posts and comments (a followup to this comment).
"My Comments" Shoutout
Thanks for "My Comments". This is a great thing for MeFi.
Comments for Projects
Dear Santa,
I already know that I'm getting the Schwinn "Stingray" 5 speed, ala 1977, and I already have one of my front teeth;
what I really, really need is "comments" for Mefi Projects.
I know it's been discussed, but I think it might be important. Frankly, I've seen a few things posted that could use some further insight. I haven't been inclined to send things to the blue for further discussion, it should happen their on the (white)?

Why does this user's single MeTa post not match the post in the thread?
A request for the abillity to edit posts after hitting "post."

Comment preservation from doubleposted threads?
I was cool having my thread deleted, because it was a double...but it seemed like more people had commented in that one - and now those comments are lost. Can they be moved?
Better still, would it not be wiser to have read in the post that people wanted to keep open, and followed those wishes?

How do I review my past comments?
How do I review my past comments? It was easy enough with the old layout. Now, when I click the 'My comments' link I can find out which threads I commented in, but I can't find any link to the comment itself. What am I missing?
one long line
I'm on an imac (os9) and whenever I open the comments section from the front page all I get is a long single line of text in the middle of the page. I tried monkeying with the cookies and it seemed to help, but I'm not sure which cookie controls the text for comments page. And the machine gives me all kinds of grief when I refuse cookies.

When a user has made more than one comment in a thread, there are multiple "jump to the comment in this thread" links you can use to see them all. The weird thing is that they are storted top-to-bottom newest-to-oldest. Can you reverese sort these links, so that clicking the first link takes you to the first comment, and clicking the last link takes you to the last comment? This seems that it would more closely match the structure of the thread it's linking to.

How long are AskMe questions open?
AskMe questions still open for comments months after they were posted:
I thought that they were locked for archival purposes after 30 days? If this has changed, I didn't see where, and if this hasn't, it's a bug. I was perusing threads on Bipolar Disorder, and found this one from May, 2005: Is bipolar mis/overdiagnosed?. I was able to post a comment to the thread today, November 6th, 2005.
So, whatup?

No Comments: please comment
It's possible that MetaFilter has reached the tipping point with comments. There hasn't been a 0 comments for 6 months now (although I have come perilously close). [more inside]
How to link to a comment
I've noticed that some people have a way to link not just to another MeFi page, but to call up a specific comment within the page, which will then appear at the top of the window. I've been unable to discover how this is done. Can anyone help?

is there any way to force a refresh of the (# new) posts on the main page?
OK, probably dumb question, but is there any way to force a refresh of the (# new) posts on the main page? I know it's time delimited somehow, but beyond that I'm clueless. And is there a place around here I can find that kind of information? Thanks in advance, oh, expert-types.
Oh, and on preview, the links for 'About', 'Etc.' and 'Customize' don't work on the MeTa preview page.

Nested Commenting?

A gmail account for anonymous askme followups
I created a gmail account for anonymous askme followups. The username is anon.metafilter and the password is metafilter. Anymore can post there. Just log in at gmail.google.com and send email from that account TO that account (anon.metafilter@gmail.com).
Since gmail allows tags, you can tag your messages. You can also reply to them (or other users can reply to them) and gmail will automatically keep all the replies together.
Why hasn't someone already done this? Is it a bad idea? (No one will be forced to use it). If it's a bad idea, why is it a bad idea? Of course, it could (perhaps will) get utterly chaotic with people deleting each others posts, etc.
Lets see what happens.

Searching Comments
Is it possible to update the search function so that you can search not only posts but the comments? Didn't it used to do that? Google doesn't seem to drill down to the comments (except in fairly new threads) and neither does the MetaFilter search function which can make it very difficult to track down an old comment or links that appeared only in the comments.

No need to "sign" your posts or comments.
No need to "sign" your posts or comments. Just below each post and comment, we can see your name. By clicking your name, readers can find any info you want to share (and as a community we encourage email addresses being listed so we can help you out with stuff via email rather than call you out in the thread or on MeTa). Just thought I'd give a heads up for some of the newer folks, as this young fellow mentioned it in his comment.
Can we please keep our flames restricted to this site?
Can we please keep our flames restricted to this site? A certain someone felt that the proper response to a disagreement here would be to post on my personal site that I should, "Stop posting to Metafilter, you dumb piece of shit." I don't think that is good etiquette.
Metafilter is not for pyramid scheme
It should be pretty obvious that stuff like this should not fly in the blue. Using this site as a quarry for pyramid schemes is inappropriate and action should be taken accordingly.
Could we have comments on the flag page?
This post about readings for a wedding has great responses, and links to other threads with great responses (disclaimer: I responded to one of them.) I flagged the link as Other, expecting to be able to comment, but sadly, there is no comment capability. Please administrator, consider granting this pony, "comments on the flag page," if it is not too large and cumbersome.

Deleted AskMe comment?
Anyone else having their comments deleted in AskMe threads? My comment in this thread was deleted as well as my answer in another recent thread. What gives? Am I just not that helpful?
View all comments/posts by this user
View all comments/posts by this user. Some time in the past six months (possibly very recently), the "View all comments/posts" interface has changed. Instead of being an enormous page, referencing every post made (sometimes into the thousands), the big list is now split up into batches of 50. [This is good] - it's a no-brainer way of reducing server load. That said, could there be a way of viewing every post on one page?

Poems in comments
Bendy makes a good point here. Even though it's easy to do, is it really fair to copy whole poems in threads? We stop people linking to other infringing files, yet the copying of poetry seems to get a free pass. [vaguely related comment inside]
Comment Requirements before Asking a Question
Could we please not allow someone to start an Ask MeFi thread before they have contributed to the site by posting comments somewhere? It is really not too much to ask. I know this could be abused by someone posting periods or "What so and so said", etc. I wonder if there is an elegant solution.
RSS feeds for comments and tags? Maybe per user?
I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.
Have we become too big to have a meaningful conversation anymore
489 comments, 207 comments, 139 comments, 129 comments, and on, and on. . . . Have we become too big to have a meaningful conversation anymore? Who can read and process 489 comments and then make a meaningful contribution? Are we becoming just like Slashdot and Fark, where only the heartiest of souls have the energy to follow the multi-hundred comment threads?
I can't see any comments when I click on them
thebabelfish's post works fine and there are supposed to be eight comments but I can't see any when I click on them.
Is there a way we can delete our own comments?
Is there a way we can delete our own comments? I understand that this could lead to confusing threads if people commented on a subsequently-removed comment, so if it needs to be limited to instances where the commenter left the last comment on a thread, that could work.
pages after the first show the wrong range of comments
When you show all comments by a user on Ask Metafilter, the pages after the first show the wrong range of comments. For instance, this page says it's showing comments 101-150, but it's really showing comments 1-150. It works fine on the blue.
Total Comments in AskMe and MeTa
When looking at a MetaFilter post, the line under the description looks like this:
posted by too_many_notes at 4:56 AM EST (13 comments total) ( feature_request ) [!]
However, in both MetaTalk and AskMetaFilter the "(13 comments total)" is missing. I find this information useful in the thread. Could the green and gray be more like the blue?

"Please read the link" callout
Metafilter fascism: Please click on the link at least once *before* filling up the thread with stupid comments. In this case, the poster (matteo) merely quotes pieces of a work of fiction before delmoi and TargetPractice jump in with knees in full-jerk mode.
