Metafilter Remixed

Metafilter: Remixed -- a collaborative filter for MeFi. Several people have suggested in the past some sort of "[this is good]" button people could use to vote for excellent posts; I know Matt's busy, so I went ahead and made one. Let me know if you find any problems with it.

My MeTa post is disappeared

Hi....I posted a URL the other day that was similar to metafilter, and so I thought MeFi was hacked for a minute there. When I realized the typo, I was relieved! I wondered if other people had found similar sites. But the post isn't there. I'm just wondering if that was a server glitch or just a lame post that was pulled. No worries, just curious for my own edification.

are there any plans to apply user preferences to MetaTalk?

We've got a new stylesheet, and one on the way for MeTa. So, are there any plans to apply user preferences to MetaTalk?

MeFi user survey about MeTa topics?

How about a MetaFilter user survey about some of the ideas that have been bandied about in MetaTalk lately: recommending or rating posts, enforced posting delays, giving better posters higher posting frequency, etc.

Is a Single Product Link Okay?

So a single product link (that's been linked before) is okay now? Or is it only because its "benbrown"? Curious.

Wall Street Journal Copyright

This is about the fifth or sixth thread since July to link to an e-mailed article from the Wall Street Journal Online. I only bring this up because it violates the terms of WSJ.com's subscriber agreement, and could cause copyright problems both for the individual users linking to them and for the 'Filter.

Customized Formatting in MeTa

My font 'n' size customization displays just fine on MeFi, but doesn't seem to take effect here in MetaTalk. I'd like to have the customization on both pages. Is there anything I can do, or is that just the way it's gon' be? I appreciate any suggestions. (Win 2000, IE 5.)

Broken URLs on Metafilter

I don't know if its just in IE or what, but several posts, the Gnod and plasticmonkey.com post are the most recent examples, point to http://www.metafilter.com/www.gnod.net (for example). I looked at the source, and this only happens on the posts that don't specify http. Is this an IE only thing, or does that always happen?

Spelling Errors on Front Page Look Bad

The front page represents us to the world. If we're going to take the trouble to post to it, can we doublecheck our spelling?

Can't log in from the MeTa front page.

Clicking the metatalk link on the front page gave me the metatalk banner and the message below. I was finally able to log in to metatalk via the "category list" button in the banner. No doubt this is Godzilla-related.

MeTa "notify this user" pony

This is actually a MetaTalk feature request. When creating a thread about a specific post or user (e.g., 1, , 3) courtesy dictates that the singled-out member be notified. But I don't know how often that happens. How about an optional field, when creating a new MetaTalk thread, reading "Notify these users". The thread creator could then enter one or more usernames and/or usenumbers, separated by commas. When the thread is created, the specified users (assuming their email address are available) would receive an automated email reading something to the effect of "You have been asked to participate in MetaTalk thread xxxxx."

MeTa threads user link functionality inconsistent in view, preview

Don't know if this is intentional or not, but i just noticed this:
When previewing my comments to metaTalk threads, mouse-rollovers on a previous posters name shows their username in the IE status bar; however, mouse-rollover in the same thread when the comments box is empty displays user numbers instead. Is this a useful feature, or a glitch?

MeTa seems to only post the last 5 entries

Ok, I was looking for any old threads on customizing MeTa, but only found something related (here). I am curious if it is possible to actually customize the number of posts on MeTa. I have Mefi for four days, but MeTa seems to only post the last 5 entries. Is there some way around this? I was looking but could not find it.

Airing dirty linen in public

Given that MeTa is mostly used for private discussions about what goes on in MeFi, should there be links to it on the front page of MeFi for all to see? Would it be more appropriate for it to be discreetly linked from somewhere else or, to take it to the extreme, only available to logged-in users?

Airing dirty linen in public is not usually considered the "done thing" and hiding it from public scrutiny may allow more open and honest discussions.

MetaTalk Archives

Maybe with the temporary increase of bug reports, deleting all but the last 5 metatalk threads on this page might be a little severe?

Two Small Questions

Two itsy-bitsy questions and one trivial, infinitesimal footnote:

1)On MetaTalk's front page it says "There have been no links and no comments posted since your last visit". Since posts here aren't required to have links wouldn't it be better to say posts or, following the wording on the posting box, threads?

2)Why, when you go back to revise your new post, does the category selected always jump back to bugs? (Some posts mistakenly attributed to bugs are impossible to find through the category archives).

Footnote: Does anyone else feel slightly disappointed when they check in on MeTa and there haven't been any new posts for what seems like ages? Is this ethically deplorable in any way? ;)

Problem opening MeTa links in a new window in IE6.

IE6, running on Win98SE. I have "open links in a new window" selected in my profile customization, but they open in the same window anyway.

two requests

1. How about a standard notice when a comment is deleted from a thread? Replacing each deleted comment with "[comment deleted]" might make threads like this more understandable.
2) MeTa doesn't notice that I've set MeFi to open external links in a new window. External links don't always open from comment preview pages, either, which causes a tiny moment of angst when I double-check links before posting. Am I missing something?

I can't see a preview of my comments in Metatalk, and the login screen isn't showing.

I can't see a preview of my comments in Metatalk using N4.79, and the login screen isn't showing. It worked just fine before the MeFi server outage (*pouts*). It does work correctly in MeFi, tho.

Bug in new MeTa post calculation?

Is there still a bug in the way MetaTalk calculates the number of new posts? Just now, I came in and got this: "There have been 3 links and 88 comments posted since your last visit." Three new links, sure, but there's only 74 new comments. Now, it's almost always (95% of the time) off by 1 or 2, but never off by 14.

Alternately, does the counter count new posts to threads that have long-since fallen off the front MeTa page? (And if so, is there any way we could once again get pointers to them?)

MetaFilter Letters

Perhaps I'm seen as a soft touch or something but people keep emailing me with requests for posting links, comments or just general attitudes. Mostly they're honest reactions to discussions here. Or interesting suggestions.

There certainly seems to be a lot of occasional readers who feel strongly about the issues discussed here. Could there be the equivalent of a Letters category on MetaTalk, for readers who aren't members to react to the threads that exercise them? At least until registrations are open again? As a fan of letters sections in newspapers and magazines, my opinion is that it would make MetaFilter even livelier.

how many people actively participate in MetaTalk?

All this recent navel gazing has me wondering--is there any way to see how many people actively participate in MetaTalk? An informal count of the front page posts just now puts it at about a 1/3 who may not even know there's all this discourse going on behind the scenes (based purely on if they have posted any comments or links, they may be lurking). No ponies needed, mathowie! Just curious if any of the MeFi Coder Brigade has come up with anything to generate that sort of info. Thanks!

Apology for Actions (Jonmc, JakeExtreme): DreamFilter

Two-Part Post. One, I'd like to pre-emptively apologize for me and JakeExtreme's excessive silliness is yesterday's Al Qaeada thread. Nobody's said anything and I suppose no harm was done, but reading the posts this morning, I feel kinda stupid. Jake is gonna be in SLC on Guard duty for the olympics for a month, so it was kind of a farewell party. But we hijacked a good thread. So, sorry.
Two, last night I was staring at a blurry blue and white computer screen, dying to type, but my hands wouldn't move, I struggled then...I woke up. I actually dreamed I was reading Metafilter! Has this happened to anyone else? And what does it all mean?

Active MeFi Members

How many of the 13179 metafilter members actively participate (post and read) on a regular basis? Is that number the result of a SELECT MAX(user_identity) type SQL statement or is it calculated somehow based on readership and usage?

How many of these accounts are test accounts? How many are inactive? How many were created and then never used or rarely used to post over the previous 2 or 3 years? How many are not Neale Talbot?

I'd love to see some histograms.
