A "Post with Comment" feature?

A "Post with Comment" feature, which enables you to post a link *and* the first comment in a thread at the same time.

When is something "worth" posting?

I am wary of posting things from the new york times. I guess since many of the things in the times are discussion-worthy, it has to have some personal significance or other spin to be worth a link. also, it needs to be from the last week, even if it hasn't been posted before. that's my impression right now. any comments?

also what about posting this ted rall cartoon? it isn't the type of thing that would garner dozens of comments, i don't think. so i guess i can think about it logically and decide whether it's worth posting. at the same time, i would like to spark talk about ted rall's stuff. my personal website isn't really set up for that sort of thing and doesn't get enough visitors to get an actual discussion going. so what do i do?

So many comments

200 posts in 8 hours (150 in the first 3)? My, how time flies when you're having fun.

Is this the future of MeFi? An explosion of comments so overwhelming conversation is useless?

Sometimes I stash a topic href in my bookmarks for a few days

Sometimes I stash a topic href in my bookmarks for a few days, so I don't forget about it as it rolls further and further off the front page. It Would Be Neat if topic pages declared how many new messages they contained, preempting a bit of thought as to whether it's worth scrolling down and finding my place again.

Request: a way to reset 'new' comments.

I totally depend on the new-since-your-last-visit feature to determine which threads to read, but sometimes I'll load up Metafilter and then something comes up and I don't have a chance to read those 200 new comments.

I would love a tiny little button somewhere on the homepage to the effect of "Forget I was here," so that I could come back in another hour or two and see all 300 or new comments, not just the new ones since my aborted visit.

weirdness

Wierdness. I'm logged in and all, but comments are always staying "new." I've tried logging in, then out, then back in again, trying refreshing the home page, closing broswer, nothing. My cookie settings are all on "accept." I'll read a discussion, go back to the home page, and all the topics still stay the same number of "new" comments. Anyone else having this problem? I'm using IE 5.0, Win98.

Recent comments: how recent are they?

A question on the Recent Comments feature: how far back in time does it traverse?

I can't post comments using the new prevent-double-post-code

Boy, I hate to gripe, but using Opera 3.6, *blush* I can't post comments using the new prevent-double-post-code. It always previews, I'm guessing it's coz both the preview and post buttons have the name 'post.'

Grabbing Recent Comments

Thanks to SQL whiz Eric, there is now a feature to grab the most recent comments, on 20 threads, sorted by the most recent comments. This will allow things to "bubble up" again when someone comments on an old thread. I think it's a useful, good feature, but could be abused later on, but for now it's better than nothing. It's available for both members and non-members, if you find any bugs, let me know here. It requires javascript to work.

Stephen Den Beste's 1000th comment

Stephen Den Beste's next comment will be his 1000th. Congrats, although Matt is still kicking all asses in terms of thread postings.

They're fluoridating our water and embedding sound files in our pages!!!

They're fluoridating our water and embedding sound files in our pages!!!

First of all, it's fucking hilarious. Let's get that out of the way right now. And it's perfect for a "light" thread like this. I don't know the exact technical mumbo-jumbo that got it in there or who put it there (was that you, Matt?), but rock the house.

But. I didn't think it was possible to do such trickery on MeFi. If it was Matt's doing, then there's no real problem. However, could any user do this? Say, if there was a thread ragging on Dubya (Here? On this page? Heaven forbid!), could someone embed a sound file of W mangling English? Is it possible for some really CLEVER guy to embed that JPG with W. side by side with chimpanzees? (Because I need to see it AGAIN, because I certainly haven't gotten it through email about five billion times!)*

Just curious.

* You see, George W. Bush has been pillored in the media because he is supposedly not intelligent! Therefore, comparing him with a chimpanzee is quite humorous, especially when they happen to have similar facial expressions! Get it? Get it? GET IT?!?!?

I'm sorry I called out a user who self-linked

http://www.metafilter.com/comments.mefi/5157

I ended up getting some slack on my comment toward Noah Grey for his self-linking within the referred mefi thread. I apologize if I stepped out of bounds in calling Noah on his self-linking. mathowie, I think you do need to make guidelines in self-linking (as well as members policing metafilter) a bit more clear. I had previously thought that self-linking is a offense all around while I guess it was just limited to the main page logging.

Again, apologies.

New Comments Only

I tread warily here, but... Matt, you've been working on customisation and filtering, have you considered a preference that would display only new items? I've looked at the current Prefs page and don't see it, nor do I think it's come up in these threads discussing the filtering feature set (obvious apologies if I'm walking back over old, tired ground...).

A simple boolean should be enough to get started with this:

[ ] Show me only thread that have new comments

I'm assuming that you either consider a new thread to automatically be a new comment as well in the back end, or that you can relatively easily do so. Since the db already "knows" what we've read, you'd be screening us from any threads that have had no activity. The benefit would be to allow setting the "show number of days" up higher to track discussions you are interested in, without having to wade through the many, many threads that have their day or two in the MeFi sun and then go the way of all things.

I'd love if there was some way to preview a comment before posting it.

I'd love if there was some way to preview a comment before posting it. My spelling stinks, and the text area is too small for me to review my post properly.

commenting ponies

Three comments (besides the fact that I love Metafilter):

- Don't count your own replies as new comments
- The new comment count is mysterious. Is that 10 new since the last time I visited the site, clicked on a link (in other words if I stopped reading and came back later), last time I read that particular post, I dunno. I always think I'm missing replies because I read slow. (Multitasking, of courese)
- Preview button for comments too!

Keep up the good work all!

how about having the word "new" link to an anchor

After each post, where it says "x comments (x new)," how about having the word "new" link to an anchor of the first new comment on that link's comments page?

Comment permalinks!

New Feature: You can now target comments on MetaFilter by using the permalinks. So, say, if you wanted to say "Winer is crazy sometimes!" on your own site or in a metafilter comment, you can now link directly to that.

Can we has previews?

I am but simple caveman blogger. Your modern HTMl ways are far too complex for me. Back in my pleistocene days, before I was frozen, we had a preview button for comments on blog links so that we could see our text and mark up before it was committed to stone. Might we have the same?
