Underappreciated comments 2020
Looks like it's been a couple of years since the last time anyone did this, and I miss it... Let's show some love for the hidden-gem comments that made you laugh, cry, or cheer this year, which you immediately recognized as genius, but somehow slipped under everyone else's radar. [more inside]
Allow "push back" comments to stand
In light of the deletion of a Metafilter comment that pushed back against a racist comment in the Frank Ocean thread, I am requesting that the community discuss the benefits of allowing "push back" comments to stand - especially when those comments are insightful, enlightening and challenge other Mefites to be better members of the community. [more inside]
Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.
I'd always thought MeFi site searches were pretty much comprehensive, but last night I came across several search terms that were clearly missing content. Has anyone else noticed this behavior in the past, or could this be a new bug? [more inside]
Looking for an image linked in a comment on the blue
Several years ago someone posted a link on the blue of a table that took prolife arguments and explained how to was or wasn't consistent with simply punishing women for daring to have sex. It covered abortion, birth control, and the hpv vaccine. [more inside]
A Lovely Way to Start the Day
Y'know what's so cool about this place? When a comment of yours gets its very first Favorite...ten years after you made the comment.
That's all. Carry on.
Longest time from comment to first like
I just noticed today that this comment that I left on an Ask MeFi post on 1/10/2010 got it's first like on 2/23/2019. That's over 9 years from comment to its first like.
Surely that isn't the record.
50,000
I'd like to thank Fig for bestowing upon me my 50,000th Favorited.
That's all.
Happy weekend!
Pony - link to active threads no longer on the first page
As a frequent reader and occasional commentator on the Brexit threads, it's always seemed odd to me that we have a sidebar dedicated to US politics threads - and who would be masochistic enough to want to read the megathread from three iterations ago?? - but we don't have this functionality for other similar, comment-heavy threads that run on beyond their time on the front page. Could we change the US politics sidebar to instead reflect all threads with a longer lifespan? [more inside]
MeFi/AskMe Website Engagement Metrics
Is there available data that shows when Metafilter and Ask Metafilter experience the highest volume of website engagement? Such as on what days and times of day are most users "on" MeFi and AskMe? [more inside]
Revisiting Pastabagel's Comment on the News of Sears Bankruptcy
In light of the announcement of Sears' possible bankruptcy I thought it would be interesting to revisit Pastabagel's comment on what might have been had Sears not made a few key mistakes.
What's the Deal with Comments "Metafilter: [succinct comment]
Every so often in a thread, somebody will post a comment consisting of
Metafilter: [clip from a previous comment]
that is sort of summing up a Metafilter sort of attitude. They're usually amusing. However, I can discern no pattern. Different members do it. Are these archived anywhere? Is there a rhyme or reason to them? Can anyone do them?
Extended new comment Show Pony
Currently for a limited period of time if a new comment(s) are posted to a thread you have open one gets a notification "Foo new comments, show". My understanding is this feature is time limited because it loads the server by regularly checking for new comments since the last displayed (hence the reason one sometimes sees the notice "0 new comments, show"). After the limited time period one gets the message "No recent updates. Reload to check for new comments".
Here's the pony request: Would it be possible to have a link in the last statement that manually runs the new comment check code and then displays an appropriate message if new comments are found? [more inside]
Stop the Violence
I've noticed an uptick in the number of comments I see that express the desire to see violence done to someone, whether from face-punches or guillotines. I know that the general MeFite psyche is bruised and battered after an exhausting 16 months since the election, but these types of comments leave me feeling like the only place I know on the internet with sane discourse is losing its way. I'd like to remind people that though their violent fantasies may feel justified, they are still troubling for others to read.
Taking Care of a Fruit Tree: Moderation on Metafilter
Bingo and I are Human-Computer Interaction researchers in Bath, UK and Vienna, AT, who are looking at moderation on web forums and how it shapes discussions. Over the past several months, with permission from the site staff, we have been examining moderator comments on MetaFilter in order to answer several questions. [more inside]
Rejoice! It's the Underappreciated Comments of 2017!
Although many of us are understandably eager to put this year behind us, we cannot do so without observing the time-honored tradition of toasting the comments that made us laugh, cry, or cheer in 2017, but for whatever reason, didn't receive the acclaim that they deserved. [more inside]
Eponyappropriate Timing
I made this post about trees/plants in video games and lazycomputerkids made this wonderful comment. And then Joyce Kilmer Rest Area, Imaginary Jersey Turnpike responded and it was like the comment gods had lined up. Searching for other examples of these types of perfectly lined up comments on the Meta.
Is a month too short a time to leave posts open for comment?
This post was made July 27. It's now August 28. It's already closed for comments. I missed responding to someone and now I cannot respond in thread but only by MeMail. [more inside]
"Humor is just another defense against the universe." - Mel Brooks
I've seen a couple people recently mention that some of their own favorite comments are languishing at the bottom of the political megathreads, unappreciated. So I figured, let's show off here! Post your own personal favorite comments that you're proud of and don't think were sufficiently appreciated!
You know who needs hugs? Underappreciated comments from 2016!
The underdogs. The under-appreciated. The under-noticed comments from last year, the ones that you enjoyed and favorited and wish to share with other MeFites. Now is the time. This is the place. Bring to the Grey your favorite comments of 2016! [more inside]

I have questions about the rate of increase in commenting over this year's U.S. presidential election period. [more inside]
avoiding mystery links
Can we, as a community, make an effort to describe or quote our links when we comment? [more inside]
Examples of MetaFilter used as a platform for creative writing?
Are there any good examples of Mefites using MetaFilter threads as a space for creative writing? One example might be scarabic's infamous how to dispose of a body comment. I don't mean hoax posts, which aren't intended as "fiction".
Pony Request: Edited Flag
I am still seeing quite a few comments which are significantly edited for content using the edit feature. Things like tripling the length of the comment by adding two full sentences to it. Not minor edits where one or two words are changed, much less simply typos. The "Other" flag seems a little too generic but that's what I end up using when I flag them. A "Edited for Content" flag would be appreciated if possible? [more inside]
Most Underappreciated Comments of 2015
It is time once again for the annual presentation of sitewide comments which we enjoyed reading but which we feel perhaps did not receive the adulation they deserved. [more inside]
Most/Least Active Tab?
We have a tab to sort Popular Posts, based on favorites. I would find use in a Most & Least Active tab (each side of that for different reasons), based on number of comments.
Mentioned in comments, Dutch comedian who parodies language class
I've been searching on MetaFilter and just can't find it: there was a comment a few years ago that linked to the YouTube channel of a Dutch comedian who parodies I think ESL class aimed at Dutch immigrants. So it's this weird but highly amusing hybrid of Dutch and English with plenty of caustic puns (in Dutch). Anyone recall who or what I am talking about?
"Mom," I said. "He has legs."
I think we're due for another "this comment made me choke on my own spit" meta thread! [more inside]
Anonymous responses
A couple of times on the blue recently, I have wanted to respond anonymously to an FPP, but the trouble involved in asking a mod to do so in my stead seemed off-putting to me. [more inside]
Podcast Posts: Now Open Forever
Our recent discussion of thread closing got us thinking: why do Podcast threads close on the same schedule as other MetaTalk threads? We changed that today. Podcast threads in MetaTalk are now open to comments forever. Here's a handy list of those threads.
Moderating GamerGate Threads
It would be helpful to have a statement from our moderators about how they're handling moderation in the GamerGate threads, before certain myths take hold. [more inside]

Please help me improve my comment
I waded into the discussion with a comment that I thought was asking for some help understanding the argument of the article under discussion. Can it be improved, or should I not have posted at all? [more inside]
deleting derails & off-topic comments
I was under the impression that derailing & off-topic comments (especially at the beginning of a thread) were going to be automatically deleted more often now that mod staffing is decreased. Do we have a community consensus backing up that standard? [more inside]
Cold tea, please
Hello everyone, I am looking for a specific comment on AskMe about brewing cold tea. [more inside]
Comments pagination pony
May we please revisit the issue of comments pagination for the mobile site? [more inside]
Data set of links to comments made in other posts?
Is there a data set of links to comments from other threads, ranked by the number of times the comment is linked to? Or, could one be created? [more inside]
pony request: linking to comments
I was wondering what MeFites and the mod team think about changing the front pages so that the "[#] comments" link goes to the start of comments in the post, and not to the start of the post body. [more inside]
That's really small of you!
I was recently called out by another user for the style I use when quoting others. The criticism was that, by wrapping the other person's comments in <small> tags, I was engaging in a deliberate effort to diminish the importance of what they said. Is this a legitimate criticism? [more inside]
Comments
I think it is detrimental to discussion on MetaFilter for people to bring trolling or offensive or just stupid comments from other sites into this one, so that people here can be duly outraged that somebody is wrong on the internet. [more inside]
Meta Comment Deletion What Fors?
Starting this "me too" thread for anyone having their comments quixotically deleted from the main metafilter thread. [more inside]
Deleting comments
I'm mostly unaware of the intricacies of the Metafilter community, but I have just had another comment deleted. It wasn't an inflammatory comment, there was no snarkiness or attacking anyone. I was expressing an opinion that female bullying has increased and we need to take this into account when raising girls, and I commented on the direction of feminism too. I'm surprised that it was deleted. [more inside]
Allow turning off favourites for specific posts
Although favourites are certainly a nice feature for a lot of things, I worry that there's a tendency for them to water down more nuanced discussions. As a way to preempt this, perhaps people who make posts could have the option to disallow favouriting of comments on that post? [more inside]
What happened to quality comment/ discussion threads?
I don't know if perhaps I've reached a point in my life where I'm becoming something of a Grinch or grumpy old man but I've noticed to much dismay that the quality of discussion in many fpps has plummeted, leaving me hesitant to read through what was previously my favorite part of metafilter. [more inside]
Android, Firefox, and Metafilter commenting
More and more I find myself visiting Metafilter on my Android tablet. I am using Firefox 25.0.1 on a Nexus 7 with Android 4.3. Recently, commenting has become almost impossible - namely, any kind of HTML tags get very screwed up. Typically, I'll copy a comment I want to reply to, surround that with em tags and then reply. Lately, in the process of posting, Android or Firefox or Metafilter decides to empty the closing em tag (leaving two carats) and append a set of empty carats and a closing em tag to my whole post. Trying to clean it up leads to all kinds of problems - the cursor jumps around and deletes things on its own. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it Android, Firefox, Metafilter, or some combination of all three? Any help would be appreciated.
Method commenting?
Assuming an AskMe poster does not explicitly request that advice or information be delivered in a specific way (e.g. "I need some tough love right now", "explain this to me like I'm five"), what prompts you to respond to an AskMe in a particular way? [more inside]
"The Web forum MetaFilter, for instance, which is known for a positive commenting flavor, depends on a 24/7 team of moderators. “People come to us all the time and say, ‘Here’s a problem with people behaving badly, we want a tech solution,’ ” says Paul Bausch, a MetaFilter developer. “We tell them that human problems require human judgment.” MetaFilter's own pb quoted in a New York Times Magazine piece on the evolution of online commentary.
When do I make my comments and posts?
I was thinking about this last night: has anyone made a tool that aggregates and visualizes when comments are made by a given user? I think it would really cool to look at an interactive time series graph, to see over a given time period if I am posting more between 10 PM and 11 PM vs 10 AM and 11 AM between MM/DD/YYYY and MM/DD/YYYY. Perhaps it would be weird to look at other people's profiles like that, but it would sure be fun to look at my own profile in that view.
What do you call this particular type of post?
Is there a term or phrase for posts where most of the comments are creatively continuing the theme of the thread? I first thought about this after my Pico Horror post, and I also thought of the recent Book Titles with One Letter Missing post. The former is a case of the comments being little stories, while the latter is wordplay, like Spoonerisms and Tom Swifties. And of course there are joke threads, which are somewhere between the wordplay and story telling. What would you call these? [more inside]
Pony Request: This Link Has Been Posted Before - Comments Version
When you post a FPP to the Blue, your links are automatically run through some sort of search function to see if they have been posted before. This might be, if not too site-intensive, a useful thing for comments as well, so that people don't find themselves posting the same links, with different flavor text. [more inside]
