Favorites Pony Request
Pony, pony, pony. Everyone wants a Pony. Here's the one I'd really like: The introduction of the [!] is nice. But I am way more interested in seeing the best, most interesting comments than I care about bad ones getting taken out behind the woodshed. If there has to be a [!] could there also be a [!!!]? In my pony dreams this spits out to a page like the del.icio.us popular list. Or something like that.
One word comments: annoying
Flagging
You can now flag posts or comments you find problematic, distasteful, illegal, off-topic, whatever. Just click on the little [!] links and record your reasons. [more inside]
If you have to update, please do it in one comment
I really wish ericb would post all of his findings in one message, instead of dribbling them out over several. Apparently he's got amberglow doing it, too. What's the point?
Why was my comment in this thread deleted?
Why was my comment in this thread deleted? My comment was "How much do you make?" and I was serious. Is that somehow not appropriate? Does jessamyn or Matt get to decide what might be an appropriate conversation starter?
Why does the recent comment page list them in reverse order?
Bug: the recent comments page is grouped again, but it looks like comments for the Blue are in reverse-post order. AskMe are in the correct order.
Small bug
Small bug: on the "all of a user's comments to MeFi" page (search_comments.cfm), if one has commented more than once in the same thread, the article appears once per comment, each with one "jump to the comment in this thread" link. I'm pretty sure this is new behavior. Ask.Me and Metatalk responses are still grouped together.
Is there etiquette on commenting in your own posts?
Is there etiquette on commenting in your own posts (FPPs?)? I'm exercising restraint - don't want to end up on Noobs Gone Wild. Looser in the green than the blue?
Pony: pagination, and preview for the actual comment
Last alluded to here: None of the redesign entries (unless I missed something) addressed the "comments by user" page, which is probably the clunkiest and least usable feature on the site. Long comment histories take forever to load (and tax the server); and you can't actually see any of the comments without clicking on each individual link. I think pagination, plus an ability to preview the actual comment, would be a great help.
Can you delete follow-up comments when the original comment is deleted?
When you're pruning the site and deleting comments, do you mind deleting followups that only make sense with the original comment?
Where did my comment go?
Disappearing comment in this thread: I posted a perfectly normal comment after 40 Watt's first comment, and I know that I did indeed remember to hit "post" because, well, I actually saw the comment posted on the screen. But just now, going back to the thread, my comment is gone. Are gremlins afoot? Because certainly my "hey, thanks for the reminder, I'm going to get this for my nephew" couldn't be considered worthy of deletion...?
Public arguments make for a poor discussion.
Having a public argument among a few people limits the ability of everyone else to continue a discussion. If you need to have an intense back and forth, please consider moving your discussion to another forum. Please also consider limiting the number of comments you make in a thread so that others may have the chance to voice their opinions.
User Profile Semantics
Wording in user profiles seems to be off:
abiku has posted no links 8 comments to MetaFilter
and no threads and no comments to MetaTalk
I believe there should be an "and" in between "links" and "8" on the first line.

Come on, guys, I don't care if you don't like her posts, but why be such assholes about it?

a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes
Self-linking in comments has been tacitly condoned, but a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes. 1, 2. Perhaps it's time for a meta-nudge in the right direction? Just sayin'.
Just wanted to tell you something
Would have been cool to make my front page debut commenting about this post, but it appears my new user probation is currently in effect. I plan on taking a look in person as it is happening only 30 minutes from my TG Day location.

Why was my comment deleted?
Is there a reason why my really innocuous comment in this thread was deleted? I think I said something like, "Ahhh, the benefits of the scientific method...", or some-such nonsense...

I got spammish mail post-posting.
I posted a link. Shortly thereafter, I get creepy spam-mail asking me to post links to Joe Blow's slightly-related site. I ignore. Not long, though, until link appears in comments. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

Follow-up post corrections annoy some people
Followup post corrections in th reads. Theydrive me nuts. It takesawayfr om the point your tryingto make. People knowwhat your tryingtosay. It disrupts the flow of conversation. Mostpeople are not spelling/grammer nazis. It looks worse to correct it.
Breaking up comment pages
Can our comment pages be broken up into smaller pieces? (more inside, yo.)
High School smackdown
Ask MetaFilter is as useful as you make it. Please limit comments to answers or help in finding an answer.

Bug in Opera
The "my comments" "most recent comments" etc. box does not show up when this site is viewed with the opera browser. Or does it, and I just don't have mine set right? I struggled with it for a while, thinking I hadn't actually logged in. However, I was logged in. I could post comments. I accepted all cookies.
More Inside
It would be nice, if when making a post, we could also at the same time post the first comment, when we want to do a "more inside". Mostly because smartasses tend to come along and make the first comment before you can.
The AskMe archive pages never seem to show a new comment count for any thread
The AskMe archive pages never seem to show a new comment count for any thread. Is this a planned feature, something that will be changed when the new software rev is posted, or my imagination?
Please answer the actual question, not what you think should have been the question
AskMe policy proposal: "Please answer the actual question, not what you think should have been the question".
For instance here, crunchland seems to think the question is "what's a good approach to picking colors", whereas namespan is saying "fireworks used to have a feature, now it doesn't, what can I do". This happens all the time. People ask how to fix something on a computer running System A, and the answer is switch to System B. People ask about Anti-virus apps, and are told not to use them and just practice safe-computing. It's a small peeve, but the added noise is not appreciated, especially when you actually care about the answers.

I can't post a comment to Ask MetaFilter
I can't post a comment to Ask MetaFilter. When I hit preview it shows nothing under Comment Preview. I'm using Mozilla 1.3.1.

It would be nice to have a "Recent comments (on 20 threads)" viewing option in Ask Mefi.
When to Post
How important, with MeFi or Meta posts and comments, are extraneous factors like time, caffeine, midwork intervals or alcohol? Is there really a before and after coffee; a morning and late night inflection; according to how long you've been up and what you've ingested to get through the day? I think there is. Is the time-stamp your best counsellor and friend? Specially considering the wildly disparate time-zones? No names mentioned; just saying. In my humble opinion, the hour (and the perceived condition or, more generally, circumstances) says as much as the name. If not more.
I know you aren't reading that fast
I've noticed (myself included) that comments to a FPP are often posted within minutes, even though the links on the FPP would take a lot longer to read. This means the poster probably did not read the FPP links. One thought to have a comment moratorium period (coded) to encourage the reading of the FPP links before posting. There sometimes seems to be a /. "first post" mentality to get a comment in as quick as possible near the top of a thread.
Can we stop with the vagina comments?

Dumb comments or is it just me?
Am I the only one who is questioning the intellectual text of Tiamats comments as of late? Sure, i've said some very embarrassing and pointless things in the past, but cmon! This is almost to the point of pointless blather. I guess you could say that I don't know anymore.
Open comments in a New Window?
why isn't there an option to open comments on a new window? we have the option to open links to a new window, but i always end up having to right click comments.
Salon's feature on Perverted Justices quotes Metafilter comments
Salon's feature on the porn chat-room vigilante site Perverted Justice includes the lazy journalist's best friend: non-attributed man on the street quotes from MetaFilter.
Posted by x?
I like the idea that everyone’s comments are on an equal playing field on this site. It doesn’t elevate or exclude anyone. However, I would appreciate a way to screen a comment before I attempt to read it. So as a feature, is there a way to let the individual member decide whether they want the “posted by ‘X’” before or after the post itself?
baby weblogs like Crunchlandfilter, Miguelfilter, Foldfilter, and Sudamafilter
If each user's page of posted links had comment counts and an RSS feed, Metafilter would instantly turn into a community with hundreds of baby weblogs like Crunchlandfilter, Miguelfilter, Foldfilter, and Sudamafilter.
Comment goes beyond the pale of acceptable comments
"On the other hand, this girl just might wake up with a sore pussy the next day and not even worry about it..." Delmoi's post is offensive, disgusting, insulting, demeaning to women, really creepy, and IMHO, is simply beyond the pale of acceptable comments. I know you should be able to say what you want, but the thread just keeps getting worse and worse. And it's not just Delmoi who's being sickening. Shouldn't this thread be deleted? What's the policy on really offensive stuff?
At what point does posting to a thread become pointless?
At the risk of sounding like a newbie (and my user# is embarrassingly large), I have to ask: How long do people read the threads? I often read MeFi in lurk mode, and sometimes don't get around to visiting for a day or two, at which time I will find a thread I would like to comment in, but no one else has posted to for a couple of days. I don't mind missing out on a chance to post a smartass comment, but at times I might have something intelligent to add to the discussion. At what point does posting to a thread become pointless?
Fat jokes aren't necessary.

MetaTalk archives have stopped indicating new comments
MetaTalk archives (e.g., May) have stopped indicating new comments. This makes it hard to find recent comments in threads that have fallen off the main page.
copious vitriol
Proclaiming that a thread is doomed is poor form.
meta-opinions about the future of a thread are pointless, and are usually an attempt to lead the thread to premature death. Don't try to pre-judge the outcome of any particular conversation. Either the thread will or will not self-destruct, and may take a direction different from the one envisaged by any of its contributors. Godwin's law has many variants; is there a need for a metafiltrian distillation of it? Has it already been done?
Trackback on Recent Comments
can we see the trackback indicator on the Recent Comments version of the front page, too, please?
What to do with out of line comments
WAY outta line. Ideologically speaking, I'm far, far closer to y2karl than I am to the victim of this jibe, but it left an awful taste in my mouth.
This is the kind of thing that makes us all look shallow and vituperative. Outside of the importunement of a heartfelt email (already sent), what venue does the average MeFite have for redress when something like this crops up?
