"Silent" comments on Projects
The lack of comments makes Projects really boring.
posted by delmoi (from earlier)
There must be a good reason for "silent" comments for Projects, but what is it? [more inside]
Rethinking comment deletion
I'm seeing a lot of very eloquent responses to AskMe questions getting deleted. Some of them are very long, and while they could be thought of as containing some offending material, the whole comments are being deleted. I want to propose and discuss just removing the offensive parts -- editing out sentences or paragraphs, and not entire comments, so that the "good stuff" can remain. [more inside]
Why was my reply to post 78716 removed?
Why was my reply to post 78716 removed? All I did was complete the quotation used by the original poster. It was from the Young Ones TV program. I really am not a fan of censorship, and AksMefi is not where I expect to encounter it. [more inside]
What was the longest thread about, anyway?
Seeing this recent MeTa thread at 378 comments made me wonder what the longest pan-MetaFilter thread was. I came up with this from August 24, 2001 at a whopping 1729 comments (apparently some kind of record), but they're context-less (for me, at least) because the link to the "metafilter parody" that the post refers to is gone.
Can anyone slake my thirst for MetaFilter history and supply the parody that inspired such prolific commenting?

Hello, someone has answered your question.
So like reddit sends me an email when someone responds to my postings. Is it possible to engineer the system here in a similar fashion to email me when someone posts an answer to my Ask Metafilter question? I think it could make it a more valuable service. Literally a golden cow. Like Baal.
It's not that I have anything against Squid Voltaire...

There once was a cost-cutting lady...
WTF - cortex waits until 261 comments to delete the OJ/Target thread?! Do you know how long it takes to craft the perfect limerick for such a crap post?! This post was begging for rhymed snark, and only ColdChef managed in the time allotted. [more inside]
Just a small verification:
dextrose
It's not ok to be fat. Yet, if anyone gets anywhere near this medical, social, and genetic consensus, people go apeshit and like magic, the comment is deleted. It just doesn't seem right to me.
Bob's Your Uncle
Is calling a poster a cheap jerk appropriate for the green?
This guy is getting an awful lot of insulting and unhelpful responses, most calling him petty, a jerk, and cheap (based upon the supposed cost of his wedding and inferred wealth). Appropriate?
Me too!
Along the lines of the "favorite" button, I suggest adding a "me too" button to appear alongside comments. A list of the people who have clicked "me too" would appear after the comment.
Rationale: I get the impression that a lot of people use favorites not so much as bookmarks, but to endorse or "vote for" a comment. Particularly on AskMe, where the point is not so much to discuss a topic as it is to answer a question, it could be useful to indicate "I have nothing to add to soandso's great comment, but want to let it be known that I endorse this answer."
I suppose that a "me too" button also invites a "you've got to be kidding" button, but that's a lazy form of argumentation, and would be served just as well by clicking "me too" on a rebuttal comment or writing your own.
nobody noticed
Uh oh.
I didn't make this comment, but it claims I did. Database corruption?

How many is too many?
I'm a little confused about the etiquette concerning favorites. I've had a few people tell me I favorite far too many comments, but I don't really see the harm in it. Is this something I should be worried about? Is there a compelling reason to curtail my willy-nilly favoriting?
hi
mefi weirdness. I can't seem to comment on the blue. The site shows me as logged in, but every time I hit post on a comment (within the past 5 minutes. it's been fine till now) I get sent to a login screen. And if I login, and then try to post again, I go back to the login screen again. Opera 9.10 on OSX. Is this happening to anyone else? Posting on the gray is fine.
Disguising or couching AskMe "opinions" as comments
I noticed in this askme thread some comments that were against the guidelines, so I flagged and moved on. Jessamyn posted and both posters responded to their deleted comments here and here, couching their previous complaints into something resembling more of a proper AskMe answer, progosk perhaps more flagrantly.
Consider this a callout on the seemingly accepted practice of providing an AskMe derail, as long as you also provide a throwaway answer. Also consider it a callout to users to just swallow their objections and move on, rather than a complaint against moderators (I know we've discussed editing half a post in similar situations before and don't necessarily want to go there).
On preview of the thread again, the OP has been forced to respond, and progosk is still arguing their point.
yay it's the one millionth comment!
Fixed that for you.
Moderators edit comments?
big response
Just curious why yet another Ask Metafilter answer was immediately deleted with no email explanation. Thanks.
Deleted posts orphans my comments. :`(
So I noticed that comments I've made in a posts which are subsequently deleted don't show up in my profile's activity...
To see things the way I do, you have to strip out the context entirely.
AmberV's posts in this thread are a fascinating account of what it's like to hold a conversation as a person with Asperger's.
Highlighting the original questioner's comments in Ask Metafilter - good idea or bad?
Often in Ask Metafilter the original questioner chimes in with clarifications or extra information, but answerers don't necessarily read all previous comments before chipping in. Do people think it might be a good idea to highlight the original poster's comments in thread? (Obviously this only makes sense for Ask).
Moderation in moderating
What standards of consistency to moderators apply in redacting comments? Can anything give rise to standards?
I ask not so much to seek the retention of my own comments; the world wouldn't be worse off if all of them were deleted. But I am flabbergasted at the inconsistency in treatment -- e.g., the comments on this thread -- and amazed that there's no attempt to explain or even to identify the party responsible.
NOT MEFI-IST
"My comments" by thread por favor.
snark feature disabled
the snark feature is disabled for me - by that i mean the comments arent working.
Well, this is probably a bug...
Most responses to a post ... ?
I really started something yesterday, and it's got me curious - do we know what the greatest number of comments ever made on a MetaFilter topic is?
Comment length hard limit?
(Minor issue, but) is there a character limit on comments?
Comments as votes?
Is it fair to consider the number of comments an FPP receives as an indication of community interest in the post? If so, then it is a pity that eustacescrubb's great find (a real best of the web IMHO) gets only a handful of comments whilst yet another FPP about Ann Coulter frothing at the mouth generates so many.
Favorites Page
Favorited comments not appearing on Favorites page. Ambrosia favorited this comment of mine, but it does not appear on my Favorites page. (It does appear on her favorites page.) Not sure if it's affecting the total favorites count.
Request: click and limit to specific poster
My first-ever pony request: In a given thread, what about a link next to each member's individual comments, that is titled "see all comments by this member in this thread." So, say, I want to see all of mathowie's comments in a particular thread, I click on that link and it gives me a page with just mathowie's comments in that thread. I know you can see all of a member's comments by going to their user page, but it's kind of cumbersome to click back and forth and you can't view all the comments together. It would be nice to have them all thrown up on one page. It would help us evaluate the position or argument that the person is developing throughout the thread.

Am I the only one who sees wierd-crazy badness under this comment in the Peter Boyle RIP post in the blue?

Responding to my critics.
It seems people have a lot of virtiol for my comments. Since I missed those posts, I would like to take this opportunity to respond.

Is no problem. Is now thread with greatest number of comments. Needs metafilterhistory tag, please.
The one-and-a-half-millionth comment
The one-and-a-half-millionth comment was posted to the blue last week without notice. And for good reason: it's a throw-away tagline in a quickly-deleted thread. So let's all laud the 1,499,999th comment instead. It took us just fifteen months to get from one million to here.
My Comments page broken
My "My Comments" page is broken. "[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Cannot sort a row of size 8407, which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8094." I have a hunch on which thread is to blame.

Comment post preview acting weird

Is it OK to construct a FPP from links and comments within another FPP?
Your comment appears to be blank, go back and try again
I'm trying to comment on thread 55668. I can preview my comment, but not post it. Either I get "Your comment appears to be blank, go back and try again." or a Coldfusion error (inside).
inconsistency in ability for logged in or out users to see favorites for comments
On AskMetafilter, when people are logged out of the site, they can see when threads and comments have been favorited, and by whom. On MetaFilter and MetaTalk, they can only see when threads have been favorited, but not comments. This is kinda strange!
This question is great, but the answers are not
This is a fine example of a decent question and good responses made much less satisfying because they are interspersed with responses from assholes who are just posting to see their names.
"Your comment appears to be empty, please go back and try again."
"Your comment appears to be empty, please go back and try again."
Can we reorder comments by favoriteness?
So now we have a visual indicator of how popular a specific post is. Cool. Could we take this one step further?
