Posting links directly to download sites

Etiquette question. I posted this AM about a small software application. After posting it occurred to me that the link was directly to the download site version tracker and not to the software author site. I felt this may have been bad etiquette on my part and I followed up with a comment redirecting to the author site.

My question, Is it bad etiquette to post an interest link to a download site (such as version tracker)? Presumably because many Metafiler viewers will click through to the download site just to "look" or follow the link and thus adding unnecessary traffic to this site.

On a side note, it would be useful to edit a post after posting it , any plans to implement this functionality?

FPP not for settling old grudges

So when did the Metafilter front page become a place to settle old grudges? Really, this is just a bit childish. Your links should speak for themselves; editorializing and playground callouts help neither you nor anyone else.

Are two word questions enough details for askme

I appreciate that this has been raised before, but wouldn't it be good etiquette for questions on AskMetaFilter to at least contain a question? Surely two words is not enough?

Pink Tank Snafu

What's the appropriate response when someone loses their cool for no apparent reason? You guessed it, Postroad loses his grip in a post about a pink tank. I know the dude's got a history of derailing, trolling etc, which this community moderately tolerates. But this was a post about painting a tank freakin' pink. When is it time to say STFU?

French-fried cars callout

Getting quite fed-up of Postroad's racism. I take it it's not an acceptable form of speech to characterise a whole nation as violent as it's most anti-social elements?

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi?

Why can't we all be as considerate of each other on MeFi as we are over here on AskMeFi? Is it because it's new, or is it something else? Don't get me wrong, I like a measure of snark & biting wit. But everyone here is so damn nice (which is why it was a great holiday present to us, Matt) that I think I have entered George Costanza's opposite day. Will there be any spillover?

I know you aren't reading that fast

I've noticed (myself included) that comments to a FPP are often posted within minutes, even though the links on the FPP would take a lot longer to read. This means the poster probably did not read the FPP links. One thought to have a comment moratorium period (coded) to encourage the reading of the FPP links before posting. There sometimes seems to be a /. "first post" mentality to get a comment in as quick as possible near the top of a thread.

Is it really necessary to comment on things you don't like?

dazed_one: six (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6) of the last ten thread he/she has participated in contain this "here comes the (newsfilter) pain" message. Is it really necessary to go around to every thread you don't like and comment in it?

Michael Jackson belongs in jail

I have mixed feelings about hoopyfrood's Michael Jackson belongs in jail post. On the one hand, I agree with the general "don't editorialize" philosophy and its corollary "save it for a comment in the thread." On the other, this isn't exactly the New York Times and a poster's take on their subject is arguably an integral part of the post. "Letting the link speak for itself", when it involves a news item, is all very well - but perhaps keeping one's opinion out of the front page text is also an exercise in obfuscation and even dishonesty. Has current policy on editorializing changed? ( I speak as a frequent editorializer, I should add. Even though I agree "pedophile of pop", with its dubious inverted commas, and all-capitals IN JAIL!, as well as the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty except Michael Jackson, are way too extreme a way of going about it.)

diversity of opinion here on PinkoFilter

"Why can't homosexuals take responsibility for their role in the propagation of HIV infections? It was their culture and practices that facilitated HIV infection and tipped the balance to epidemic. Even before this male homosexuals known for their association with transmission of disease".

"Queens are pathetic in old age as their protestations about the faults of others fail to hide their wrinkles"

Jesus you people* are hateful, and smug too.

Too Much Meta-Criticism?

Hmmm. I think one or two levels (depending on how you think about it, that's how it is when dealing with meta-levels, see Princess Bride.) of metalevelness is enough. Critizing a stupid Metafilter FPP should be done in one MetaTalk post, not in an another FPP and Two Stupid MetaTalk posts.

Would MetaFilter be better off without an etiquette/policy section in the gray?

The Pollo Campero discussion is a nice example of members drowning out derailing attempts without resorting to MetaTalk (at least until I fucked it up by bringing it here). Would MetaFilter be better off without an etiquette/policy section in the gray?

this is racist, offensive, incredibly stupid

Ok, I'll be the first to say that this is racist, offensive, incredibly stupid, and I'm blown away that Miguel was the one to post it, especially considering what his reaction would be if the word "Jew" were substituted for "Arab". I don't think this post belongs on MeFi.

What do we do about all of you assholes?

We've all seen what can happen when MeFi devolves into pointless personality conflicts: the site gets hijacked to propogate something that 99.9% of the users don't care about. We've also all seen one member virtually drag another into such conflicts, making a two-way crapfest out of what was originally just one-sided goofiness...[more inside]

Etiquette: Linking to fragile sites

GeoCities
is, of course, notorious for falling to pieces if more than three people click on one of its sites (though anastasiav's secondary links more than make up for her first). It's happened to everyone, so I wonder whether more experienced posters have untold ways of guessing what sort of traffic a posted website will bear? Are there any ways to avoid the "MetaFiltered" meltdown? Are there any steps posters can take to preempt the predictable outcome, besides including the (unsatisfactory) Google cache? Can the content be saved in another way, in order to answer users' queries?

In short, what is the best policy for fragile links, assuming they're worth posting anyway?

Can we criticize?

It's great that Matt is just one of the guys when it comes to posting but, with respect, this post of his seems way below average. It's a short news item, from a big media source, which will already be known to those who follow the news. The post, though, is not the point. My question is "To what extent are we allowed - or able - to criticize his posts as if he were just another user?" Is it ungracious, ungrateful or downright rude, for instance? Fwiw, my opinion is that special treatment and undue deference are just as annoying and even insulting.

Keep it here, kids, part 2

Bad form, stonerose. You may not have agreed with the FPP, but it certainly wasn't made in bad faith. So there's no excuse for linking to the poster's blog just to get in a personal dig.

Posting the phone and fax number of an organization for protest seems fair game. Posting the home address of that organization's director, not so much.

False anchors give wrong impression

A minor nit, but it's misleading to use a false anchor tag in a link, because people will wrongly assume it's legitimate. The Christian Science Monitor did not declare neoconservatives to be their enemies.

agenda-filter

This is so lame. I've gotten used to flames on MeFi; its part of what passes for discourse anymore. But this entire post was a predominace of flaming meta-poo. I understand the calls of Agenda-filter, but if people are going to post stuff like "It seems I must speak in language you understand . Go fuck yourself you ill-bred shit." then I think its time we up the ante. If you're going to Meta-bitch, then take it MetaTalk. More importantly, if you're going to Metaflame, do it with half an ounce of couth and style. That appears to be where MetaFilter is headed, so please keep up. (slightly more inside)

Imminent demise of Metafilter predicted, 7/3/03

As a long-time MetaFilter reader (but mostly a lurker), it saddens me to see that the quality of FPPs has fallen dramatically in the last few months. This is less in reference to repeated posts, and more just really lame, boring, very poorly written (or not written) and poorly styled FPPs. And what's worse, the problem also seems to be rapidly accelerating in recent weeks, IMHO. I have friends that have basically stopped reading Mefi due to quality drop. While I do realize that recent MetaTalk posts have suggested features to help fix FPP-quality issues, meanwhile the problem goes unchecked. Is there anything we can do to help save Mefi from a death of total lameness? Or should those of us who are concerned just start looking for a good Mefi alternative? (Any suggestions?) Do other people out there agree that quality has declined and poses a serious threat to the relevance of Mefi, or it is just my friends and I?

Please, I'm begging you, use descriptive titles for your posts.
