Multiple sockpuppets for one user

Can I repeat my unanswered AskMe question?

A point of AskMe etiquette? I recently posted a question and got no useful response, and I suspect it's because I put the question badly. At this point, it's off the first page. Is it OK to repost the question in a more potentially useful way or should I just give up?

Maybe they didn't hear you the first time it was deleted

What do you do when you post condescending noise in an Axme and it gets deleted? Post it again in essentially the same form, of course. But wait! Don't forget to act indignant for maximum effect. [mi]

Abanadoned questions on AskMe

Abanadoned questions on AskMe:
I think one of the purposes of AskMe is to provide an archive of solutions. Too often, even though the questions are answered by the community, the asker doesn't bother to report back, or forgets about the question. [more inside]

One user's great post is another user's meh....

I really don't care to see a FPP about what you vaguely remember your friend told you today. The Wikipedia links don't help, thanks.

Personal Vendetta Filter

Personal Vendetta Filter: dhoyt links to a comment amberglow made yesterday on Metachat. In doing so, dhoyt continues to insist on taking shots at members on his shit list in threads where they have made no comment whatsoever. This penchant for personal attacks is getting sick. All too often, he uses this place as a sort of personal emotional toxic waste dump where he can vent some jealousy, spite and malice at whoever is on his shit list du jour. This particular time his little chickenshit cheapshot was just a little too obsessive-compulsive over-the-top.

SWF linking etiquette

A question of netiquette: (I know, I know, horrible word)

Re: this - isn't it rude to link directly to a any .swf when its creator has obviously created a page in which s/he intends for said work to be experienced?
posted by MaxVonCretin on Nov 4, 2005 - 17 comments

what warrants a rude response like this?

Newbie etiquette question: I thought this was a pretty cool post about a topic on which I was I poorly informed [Cyprus, Varosha]. For future reference, what about a post like that warrants a response like this? Is there a backstory? Why so personal?

Is that +1 geeky or -1 geeky?

People leave comments such as "+1 funny" or "-1 section". Given that this ranking system doesn't exist on MeFi, is it a wank, showing how l33t they are, and familiar with geeky norms at other sites like /. and k5? Or is it an acceptable shorthand for "I like this" or "I think this is dumb"?

What's the deal with the title of this post? It doesn't look like it has anything to do with the thread. Is it an odd attempt at self-promotion of some sort?

Way to be an adult, man.

Pretend you are a new user. After an excellent first post, you slip up and post some discredited bunkum. A predictable (and pretty funny) pile-on ensues. How do you respond? With class and grace.

I cannot believe I have been forced to finally start a MeTa post but the continued dios-baiting in this thread (and with any luck elsewhere) really needs to end.

One word post aren't informative.

One. Word. FPPs. (ok, so the last is more than one word) I don't know about you, but sometimes I'm stuck on a slow connection. Dial-up slow. I have to carefully select which links I click, and I don't want to waste my time on links that don't interest me. I screen my choices based on the info provided by the FPP itself, and link location is only mildly helpful (except for newsfilter). Can't we please get a consensus for making the FPPs informative enough to judge interest? (other uninformative posts today alone...)

Steven Spielberg thread next to be led into I/P debate

Cleardawn seems dedicated to posting long discourses about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in any post that mentions Jews or a Jewish person, even in passing, and has succeeded in derailing a number of recent threads. Here and here and here., and probably elsewhere as well. The user obviously thinks that they are fighting the good fight, but this is clearly getting to be a bit much, and they don't seem to listen. Help?

Yet another newsfilter post

Yet another newsfilter post featuring a topic that's being covered all over the US media but that's OK, because it concerns a bad thing involving a Republican. And if it were the same topic but involved a high profile Democrat? Then it'd be shouted down with comments about how it's a bad post.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't date scarabic (especially since he thinks that as a man he's "wired to kill" and "rape everything in sight"), but I tend to keep that not very relevant info for myself. are we seriously supposed to share on AskMe our evaluation of other user's desirability as girlfriend/boyfriend? because if we indeed are, things could get pretty ugly pretty soon on AskMe

I'd like to make amends

Feature request: apologies for intemperate things said in the heat of the moment or drunkenness... or both. I wrote some shit to b_thinky last night that I regret. No email address was listed in his (or her) profile, otherwise I would have reached out that way. But I made a vow to robocop is bleeding a while back about just this kind of thing, and broke my promise, and I'd like to make amends.

How can my father promote his New Orleans towboat pilot relief effort?

My father is attempting to start a New Orleans relief effort among towboat pilots (he is one himself). He's posted a "call to action" on his site, and I'd like to get the word out. I haven't posted it on the front page because it seems dangerously close to a self-link (and is just one editorial, really). Any suggestions?

trolling

How does a member with a user number so low make a post like this and say with a straight face, " I would also wish to add that I really don't wish to be seen as one who is trolling, because I am not...I actually don't think it's that terrible a post. "

Was I a jerk in this thread?

I wouldn't have thought this needed any discussion, but after a few emails and a lecture from my father, I'll open it up. In this thread I left some info for others, and upon receiving a "I don't think it's accurate" message, corrected them rather snidely. (The lead-in comments are the two immediately prior.)

The question is:
Given the offense (not checking facts before posting), did I come down too tough? Is this an effective way to get people to start thinking before posting, or is this just going to be seen as obnoxious and arrogant?

Why has this question in Ask Metafilter gone so smoothly?

I posted a smartass answer in this thread.

I admit it was a rude, snarky answer and shortly after posting it I wished it was deleted. Without my request, it was--to my relief.

Over the course of the evening, however, I found it unusual that what would in any other Metafilter setting would be a hugely inflammatory post (SUV, taxes, as subjects), yet after several hours no one had contributed (despite the topic matter and a user base in the tens of thousands).

So: Have Mefites become exceptionally complacent, did the topic (against all expectations) generate no interest, or was there a culling of the thread?

It's hard to tell in text if a threat is serious, so don't do it.

It is ever so much a shame that one . . . can not be sure of getting away with offering $500 to see a specific user harmed. Because if I could, I would -- and I am dead bloody serious about this -- offer that much to see him hurt very badly.

This is just wrong.

Ask MetaFilter etiquette - timeframe of questions

SOMEBODY has been busy derailing threads

When will dios have the decency to go to the next thread, or to MetaTalk, rather than derailing a thread with attacks on the poster? Plenty of people like y2karl's posts, plenty don't; we all know that already. So what, exactly, other than forestalling any real discussion of the issues raised in the post, does dios think he adds by his knee-jerk and immediate (2nd comment in the post) carping and cavilling?
