Are Links Required?

Are front page postings forbidden without a link, no matter the postings content?

A community, until there is credit to be given

Many web-loggers include links to items found at Metafiler -- but in their [via ...] only feature 'Metafiler'. Wouldn't it be more correct to include Mefi and the profile name or website of the person who derived the post? Or are we all merely journalists and researchers contributing to a greater whole?

Apologies for posting the double, but I am going to do it anyway.

Sorry if this is a double post but the search timed out -- why do some members applogise in their front page comment for possible double posting because the search timed out, especially before they've actually got to the point of the actual post in the first place? (more)

I popped in to say this is stupid.

Is it really necessary to comment on threads you think are "stupid"? Surely it's better to "take it to Meta" if it bothers you that much or just ignore it.

Politeness and double posts.

This thread contains at least two (that I could find) examples of how to point out a double post in a polite and casual manner. But lately, this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I'm wondering why some threads prompt some fairlystrong language in MeTa and outcry in the threads, and others are allowed to continue.

Is it uncool not to have my name or e-mail on my profile?

How uncool is it to not post your name or e-mail? I did a googe search, found a pic of a lady with the same name but she is not me. So I changed my profile.

Any further and you'd need a shovel.

Well, this thread has pretty much hit rock bottom.

New spice, same as old spice

British widow thread. (a) Just a news story. (b) Should have been in the previous thread.

But what ought to happen when you find new information on an old topic and the original thread is now a little stale?

Is it out of line to post two links in one day?

Considering my rookie state-of-being. Let me ask this, is it out of line to post two links in one day?

"Discuss..." is annoying and useless.

Free will's a bitch.

Is this maybe not the best hornet's nest to stir up again? It got pretty ugly last time, and this is just a different salvo in that same MeFi street fight...

Is it getting nastier and more bloodthirsty here? (Apres 911)

This might be a bad thread, or it might not. Apologies if so. I really can't tell, so I'll just get it off my chest. Now that the bombs are dropping, and violence is in the air again, does it seem to anyone else that the tenor has also gone a little nasty and bloodthirsty on MeFi? (more)

A "take it to MetaTalk" button

A "take it to MetaTalk" and/or "take it to Email" buttonb below the Comment box? In the heat of the moment it would help to be reminded these options existed.

Inappropriate name-calling in comments

"If you don't see what's so crass about that, you're a simple-minded fuckwit and I sincerely hope that your stupidity one day gets you killed."

More evidence of MetaFilter's demise.

Multiple posting.

Today, a user posted SEVEN identical posts on the front page (here's one). It doesn't appear to be spam. I guess the user doesn't understand how to post threads (You may have to wait a while after hitting the Post button). If I were Matt, this is the kind of idiocy that would make my job suck.

West of the web - TV on the FPP

This is absurd. A WTC / TV discussion on the front page? Worst thread ever.
posted by norm on Oct 4, 2001 - 32 comments

Too much WTC.

If you don't contribute front-page links, you probably haven't seen the post a link page where Matt pleads with users to show some restraint with WTC links. Should he put it in a bigger font?

Should a poster 'moderate' his post?

I just saw something I haven't seen in such a concentrated form before, so let me ask this question: Should a poster 'moderate' his post? Play talk-show host so to speak..?

9-11 abbreviations disrespectful

There is something disquieting and deeply disrespectful about the way some well-intentioned but impatient members have chosen to abbreviate the September 11 massacres. After 0.81 there has just appeared a 911 designation. Is a geeky insider-code-thing acceptable in these circumstances?
Is it even understandable to non-savvy members? To non-Americans, for instance "911" is a Porsche or an emergency phone number or the 9th of November.
Also there seems to be something inconsiderate about saying "WTC" when so many others died in Washington and Pennsylvania.
I am at a loss for suggestions. It would be too jinxy to say History will probably record the attacks as the September Attacks(there already is a "Black September"...) - because September is not yet ended.
Any ideas, meanwhile?
I often need to refer to these events here at MeFi and would welcome a short, but respectul abbreviation.
Thank you.

Personal attacks received by email instead of in-thread. Weird?

Can someone tell me if it is standard procedure to receive personal attacks from Metafilter users in my e-mail box because I posted a comment that they didn't like? Wouldn't it be better to post their opinion of my comment in the normal Metafilter thread? Specifically I am referring to a comment I made on this thread.

recycling your thoughts post after post?

"My ideals are strewn throughout this site like shards of glass from a broken vase." (fooljay). What's policy for recycling your thoughts between threads? Consider them said, and run down your Big Idea Battery? Artfully paraphrase them to disguise lazy ctrl-C/V work? What wouldn't be acceptable (easiest form of the question to answer, I suppose).

Some new users are acting in weird/not-quite-okay ways.

The link/comment ratio for some new users is all over the place, as are a lot of other behaviors such as overly-lengthy front page posts (not to mention basic respect and tolerance for people's views)

Constructive (or not?) Criticism on Metatalk

Constructive (or not?) Criticism on Metatalk
MeTalk is the place where we gripe about what we think is wrong with certain posts. So what happens when you're a little too straightforward about your opinion? Hurt feelings and accusations of flaming. Was I over the line with my comments? What can we do to ensure that posters don't take offense to criticism doled out in MeTalk? [more inside]

"That's OK Summer, I meant it in a "bugger the bloody Welsh" way anyway. :)"

Thread Hijacking

Thread hijacking

Should the wandering and fission of the topics in MeFi conversation be seen as an abuse of the openness of the forum, or should it be welcome as the natural state of a healthy and creative exchange? My first reaction is to resist attemps by others to limit the scope of the conversation, but I can see reasons to keep it focused, too, especially given the short lifetime of any thread. I want to know what the rest of you think.

cheerleading/jeerleading: new info or be quiet

Cheerleading posts. (Or their opposites: let's call them jeerleading.) We're seeing more of them. They don't add to threads: and if you're the one being praised, it's a bit embarrassing.

Can we just take it for granted that some people will agree, others disagree, and that if you want to support an argument, you should either provide some useful background or suggest other lines of discussion?

Notify when you MeTa, kids

So I mentioned this here, but I'll ask here as well:

How about a way to remind people when they create a MetaTalk thread that they should invite/inform interested parties? I don't know how you'd do it -- maybe a popup the first time someone hits the site after the thread has been created (like the joke popup the other day).

Obits: if you don't care, stay out

Raining on other people's parades. I've seen this before, eulogizing, and I don't know if it's been discussed here, but people have a bad habit of being contrary and blase simply for the sake of it.

So in this thread, which admittedly I am very upset about, seeing as how I used "font size=7" to proclaim my sorrow, why are people coming in to a thread that is about mourning of a sort and talking about how much they don't care? You didn't read pamie.com? Wonderful! Why the hell are you talking about it, then? You didn't like it? Super! Does that mean your opinions are appropriate?

Are people so in love with the "sound of their own voice" that they just have to blab, regardless of the thread? I'd like to know, really.

Does MetaFilter need to be a nurturing environment?

"Of course not, dayvin, but thanks for ruining the excitement of posting my first link."

Link content aside, does this happen too often? Does MetaFilter need to be a nurturing environment? Could we maybe have "rookie" stripes that let the jaded know to cut the newbies some slack?

I am too good for this, and I am telling you that now.

Of all the cheap rhetorical tactics employed here, I think my favorite is "you people are sick and this conversation is beneath me, so I'm not participating except to note this fact" (#1, #2, #3, #4).
