Complaining that all pants are made for fat people is offensive

Could we please blame fat people for everything that doesn't go our way more often? It's awesome and not at all bitchy.

Callout for Great Post

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed grouse's post yesterday on London Underground maps. It was informative, well-written, well put together, and - well - just generally full of goodness. Thank you, grouse!

I think that NickDouglas wants me to get my own blog.
As something of a noob, I'm curious as to what the consensus is on what makes a "get your own goddamn blog and quit bothering us" post. I've done a little back reading on MeTa and finding a consensus is difficult. Help me not do it again. Thanks.

Attack on poster history is unwarranted

A number of recent contentious discussions have quickly devolving into attacks on the past history of the individuals under discussion or justifications that break down to “They do it too!”. Would it help improve the tone of discussions to ask posters to consider the direct relevance of their comments on the topic under discussion, rather than firing off ‘unrelated’ repsonses that read like cheap shots or weak justifications? What's wrong with my "rich and happy" AskMe post?

Someone complained about my "rich and happy" question. I can only assume others feel the same.
Give it to me straight - what's wrong with it? Rip it apart. I can take it. What doesn't kill me makes makes me a better MeFite.

"Please read the link" callout

Metafilter fascism: Please click on the link at least once *before* filling up the thread with stupid comments. In this case, the poster (matteo) merely quotes pieces of a work of fiction before delmoi and TargetPractice jump in with knees in full-jerk mode.

Mefi-a culpa

Calling myself out. Kind of unusual, I know. But I looked back at some of my recent comments and I realized that I've been a butthead and a troll lately. If anyone wants to take exception with my bad behavior, feel free to do so here. And in the effort to make things better- has anyone else fallen into such a rut? Any ideas about how to get out?

A single link to Amazon's front page? Really?

Yes, we all await the new Hitchhiker's Guide movie with equal parts fear and excitement. But an FPP linking to Amazon's home page to show the trailer for a new movie is bad form.

Acceptable to repost comments as FPPs?

Two things:

1) When is turning a comment into a FPP okay? The poster acknowledges it as such in the FPP itself and the old thread is still open for new comments. Shouldn't the new links be added to the old thread?

2) Also, pepsi blue.

This is pretty egregious trolling.

The reality is that they stand around thinking they are playing a video game until somebody gets hurt. This is pretty egregious trolling.

These aren't really good posts.

Natalie dee now has her very own dog. It's too bad she had to " stone-cold quit my job".

Does This combined with This really belong on the front page?

What _is_ the best way to address this stuff without seeming like a jerk?

Selflinking crossposting snafu

The spectre of self-linking once again rears its ugly head. Allow me to present Exhibit A - "The clueless reviews the Mac Mini", submitted on MacSlash by StormBear. If it may please the court, here also is Exhibit B - "The clueless reviews the Mac Mini", submitted in the blue by user #3411, alias StormBear. Ladies and gentlemen, the prosecution rests.

Why was this post deleted?

So, was fivefreshfish's post deliberately deleted as a double to taumenson's, or are whole threads disappearing too?

Too Much MetAskMe

MetaTalk is a discussion area for topics specific to MetaFilter itself

However, it seems like half (or more) of the MetaTalk posts lately are actually specific to AskMetafilter. (more inside)

Self-Link Callout

I know someone has posted a self-link as a FPP and hasn't identified it as such (he has also done it in comments). I think it is because he wants to keep his anonymity. I don't want to out him, but at the same time I think it isn't right to post a link to a site that is your own (esp. without disclosure). Should I just email him to let him know I know? Should I email Matt directly about it? Thoughts on how best to handle?

Callout of Responses to Miss Lynnster's First Ever Post

This is my first MeTa thread calling someone out, but this just seems out of line. A new member posts a good link that is not news/politics/religion, and someone has to find something to whine about. Good job sticking up for yourself, though, miss lynnster!

Unnecessary callout

Biffa wrote to me "Lots of people don't read NYT or slashdot and neither of these have a relationship with MeFi such that links can be regarded as exclusive. Perhaps you should focus more on finding some good links for yourself rather than trying to Metapolice with what appears to be your first contribution of any kind as a member. And take it to MeTa if you have any further problem with it." [http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/37810]

I've been reading metafilter for three years and I feel qualified to make my comment. I re-checked this page before I posted: http://mssv.net/wiki.cgi?WhatIsABadPost

If that page is incorrect, then perhaps someone should change what is stated before handing out conflicting advice. I figured Slashdot and the lead article of the NYTs (and this isn't life and death news) weren't FP material. But perhaps I'm wrong.

Get it right the first time

Just because there's no good way to get a thread shilling a new piece of free software noticed once it drops off the top of the front page is no reason to make a further thread noting the addition of a uninventive feature that was missed in the original post.

Nor does that fact that KevinSkomsvold saved it by turning it into a discussion about the merits of RSS mitigate my point. IE: What is the best way to do it?

Can we close signups now?

Can we close the door now? I'm genuinely happy to have some new blood, but here's the problem. Pretty much everyone who's been reading the site with their noses against the glass has been let in. Hereafter, we're going to get a bunch of folks who happen to be wandering by, and know nothing of how things are done around here. (I don't know if that's the case with notmtwain, I'm only using his/her post as an example because it glares so.) We can always open it up again later, but can we have a moratorium on new users? Just for now? Please?

Stop being jerks, especially outside of politics threads

Consistency in standards, and the lack thereof. Since the election, MeFi has gotten a lot calmer, and a lot more readable. Much of these is surely do to the deletion of highly partisan comments and threads, but it seems like some people aren't getting the message. Snarky FPPs like this provoke obnoxious replies like part 3 of this.

Is there a viable way to confine this crap to the political threads?

Let me just say for the record that it's noon, eastern standard time, and as far as I can tell none of the new ElectionFilter threads have devolved into the mess of baseless accusations and screaming threats I was afraid I'd see today. Thanks to everyone for keeping cool heads on this so far, and whatever happens I hope we can keep it this way. I know we're all tired of it.
