Sort by recent comments

I've not been here long, but already I want a pony. It's been addressed tangentially before: sort by recent comments." Add this to AskMefi - by monju_bosatsu and we desperately need a "My AskMe"but my specific desired feature is to have the ability to know if an AskMeFi question of mine (or MetaTalk question) has been commented on further since I last checked/logged on, even if it is on my 'user' page, rather than on the main pages. I couldn't find such a beast, so if it is there, please let me know.

I agree bookmarking the specific threads would get the job done, but what's the point of asking for a new pony if the donor could just say - "You already have a perfectly functioning bicycle" Thanks.

Searching and Flagging

PonyFilter - search Threads&Comments in the blue? Seeing what posts have been flagged as? Or has these been asked about already? (metatalk search sez no...)

MeFi Affiliate IDs?

This thread gave me an idea. Could we set it up so links going to amazon or iTunes contain a MeFi affiliate id, so when visitors buy songs or books, some money could go to a MeFi general fund for hosting or sending mathowie on vacation or whatever?

My AskMe?

Matt, we desperately need a "My AskMe" sort of deal. Things are scrolling so damn fast that it's nearly impossible to keep track of the good stuff.

How to get comment to show up immediately after posting

After I submit a comment, it sends me back to the page with all the comments, but it's the old version of that page, without my new comment. If I force a reload, mine will show up, though it used to show immediately. Is there some new caching or something?

Standardizing timezone names

"EST" = "Eastern Standard Time"; "EDT" = "Eastern Daylight saving Time"; "ET" = "Eastern Time" (no standard/daylight specified -- usually obvious which it is). It's to be expected that people will make these mistakes in FPPs and comments, but could you tweak the code so it doesn't say "EST" when it really doesn't mean "EST"? Rather than trying to come up with some code algorithm, or trying to remember to make the DST change every six months, just call it ET / CT / PT / etc and be done with it. A pet peeve of mine ...

Can We Have Automatic URL Generation?

Anonymous Posting Returns

Anon posting is back on for Ask Metafilter, including all the extended areas and categories and tags and whatnot. I think I tested everything out and it worked, but let me know if you find any bugs, as I'm sure I forgot one.

Editting feature request.

After making this post I saw that I had somehow deleted half of it (probably when fixing a tag on preview). Is there some way to implement an edit function of one's fpp? Maybe have a five minute grace period?

Request for NSFW/gross image self-policing

Is there anyway to not post NSFW images, or gross images, maybe like blood splurting from the chest of George W. Bush, etc?

Best answer undo

I inadvertently marked a best answer on my Askme thread. I would really like to be able to undo that. Possible?

RSS feeds for comments and tags? Maybe per user?

I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.

Fast Front Page

I know it's been mentioned before, but I'd like to make a humble request for an extension of the length of the front page of AskMe. Questions just fly off the page, often in less than 24 hours, rendering the site less useful. An even better change would be to allow users the ability to choose the number of days displayed on the AskMe front page, just like on the MeFi front page.
Sorry if this is a redundant request. I bring it up because AskMe questions are vanishing from the front page ever more rapidly.

Can I Remove My Double?

Would it be possible to auto delete a post if the original author flags it as a double post? I double posted, I flagged it, but it is still there, perhaps I should be able to remove it?

Plaintext AskMe and MeTa

There's also a plain-text theme for metafilter, with a white background.

I've always wanted to ask this question, how do I get the nifty white background in Metatalk and Ask Metafilter? The white background theme seems only to work on the main page. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Add link to contact??

Wouldn't it be neat if you could link to a specific comment or post when you were adding someone as a contact. Perhaps the post/comment was a moment of infatuation or a particularly representative post. This would allow us to track and share exactly why we get that warm fuzzy feeling (or itchy, burn-y feeling) when we see certain usernames. What do you think?

Is there a way we can delete our own comments?

Is there a way we can delete our own comments? I understand that this could lead to confusing threads if people commented on a subsequently-removed comment, so if it needs to be limited to instances where the commenter left the last comment on a thread, that could work.

Can we have a 'via' field on the posting page?

Minor feature request: a via field on the blue's posting page. As part of the redesign, I'd love to see an optional field for including a "via" link. Two reasons: (1) it would encourage posters to acknowledge the source of the link, if applicable; and (2) it would allow some interesting statistics to be generated from the aggregation of via data.

Total Comments in AskMe and MeTa

When looking at a MetaFilter post, the line under the description looks like this:
posted by too_many_notes at 4:56 AM EST (13 comments total) ( feature_request ) [!]

However, in both MetaTalk and AskMetaFilter the "(13 comments total)" is missing. I find this information useful in the thread. Could the green and gray be more like the blue?

getting and highlighting great conversations

Ahem, ok a two for one.
Would a "great conversation" flag be something desirable? I tried to flag a conversation by flagging the fpp post, but frankly the post was... so so, the conversation that followed was terrific though, so I just chose "other" in the flag list.

And can people envision a method to encourage well crafted posts instead of the rush-to-post-before-someone-beats-me- to-it?
I know once comments start deleting a poor/bad post becomes hard despite there possible being a much superior (double) post. the only things I can think of seems like a lot of work for dear leader.

Tracking AskMe Posts That Have Left Frontpage

With the rate that ask mefi threads scroll off the main green page, how about a mechanism that allows for the easy retrieval and spotting of updates the threads that have scrolled off -- one that doesn't require searching through the archives. When someone updates a thread that is no longer on the front page, it shows up as an entry on an UPDATE page, the link to which would appear on the top of the main green page and never scrolls off... MeFi as MMORPG!

This is my greatest stolen modified idea today. Metafilter hitpoints! We all get 5000 to start. Once you level up via unattacked thread posting, you can cast healing spells on your favorite, but inexplicably hated MeFi pals, or do double damage with Fireballs. Anybody who reaches zero has their account closed, unless someone ells resurrects you by sacrificing 3/4 of their remaining points.

Favorites Pony Request

Pony, pony, pony. Everyone wants a Pony. Here's the one I'd really like: The introduction of the [!] is nice. But I am way more interested in seeing the best, most interesting comments than I care about bad ones getting taken out behind the woodshed. If there has to be a [!] could there also be a [!!!]? In my pony dreams this spits out to a page like the del.icio.us popular list. Or something like that.

Minature Horse Request: When you add a contact and when you flag a comment for review, a new browser window pops up to continue on to the next step. Is there any way that this could be changed so that it continues in the same window? I know this is minor, but it's driving me batty.

Post Rating System?

Anyone get the feeling that the overall appeal of Metafilter threads has sharply degenerated in the past few months? I used to think $5 for posting priveleges was a bargain. Now I think it's about right. So much trivia. So little time. Maybe there should be some rating system for threads like Slashdot has for its posts?

HTML Formatting Request

My first pony request: in addition to the HTML shortcut buttons that currently exist below the preview field—bold, italic, href—it would also be useful to have buttons for 'blockquote' and 'small' since those tags often get used for quoting news sources. Failing that, what other buttons would be useful?

Changing Tags

I've started tagging my AskMeFi posts and realized that in some instances, the resulting answer(s) would serve as valuable tags. Not knowing what the answers are going to be when asking a question, I hope we'll eventually be able to change/add tags once a live question has been answered.

Titles in AskMe

Maybe this was covered and I missed it, but why do individual AskMe threads not have unique titles? When I bookmark a Metafilter thread, it has a unique title but when I bookmark an AskMe thread, I have to change the title.

Pony: pagination, and preview for the actual comment

Last alluded to here: None of the redesign entries (unless I missed something) addressed the "comments by user" page, which is probably the clunkiest and least usable feature on the site. Long comment histories take forever to load (and tax the server); and you can't actually see any of the comments without clicking on each individual link. I think pagination, plus an ability to preview the actual comment, would be a great help.

RSS for Sidebar?

Now that the sideblog is back in action, would it be possible to get an RSS feed for it? If this would involve a lot of work, just put it somewhere on the list of Ponies, but I'm wondering if, since the sidebar is powered by Blogger, there might not already be some sort of automatically generated feed that I just need to point my reader at.

RSS 2.0

How about a proper RSS 2.0 feed? The existing .91 feed doesn't provided authors or even datestamops. Also, the existing ATOM feed doesn't validate properly and doesn't work in the two RSS readers I use (NetNewsWire and Thunderbird).

Userpages closed to indexing?

Revisiting this.

Metafilter is the biggest site that I can edit a page (my user page) on. I'd like to have "I am the [my name] that went to so and so school, and so and so high-school and did so-and-so" so that if someone googled my name looking for me, they could find that. However, userpages are marked NOINDEX for robots, for to stop villians from using google to harvest stuff, I assume. Given that it would be trivial to write a script to go through all the user pages and snarf anything, and given that these are The Internets, is there a reasonable expectation that an email address or other information you put on a publicly viewable page will *not* be harvested? Doesn't everyone have a spam-catcher address for this purpose?
